"Mamma..."

In an instant, she is awake, sitting up with a start, listening out
into the darkness...

For a moment, there is nothing but her own breaths, and the soft
snoring of her still sleeping husband, lying on the other side of the
bed... but then... just as she had known, there it is... the soft,
irregular sound of tiny hobbit feet, staggering toward their
bedroom...

"Mamma..."

"Oh, sweetie..." Throwing the covers aside, she hastily rises from
the bed, hurrying toward the little creature who is now huddling in
the doorway. Kneeling in front of him, she carefully embraces him,
rubbing his tiny back.

Feeling her arms folding around him, her tiny son breaks down into
fretful sobs, burying his face in her nightgown, clinging fiercely to
her.

"There now... my poor boy... there now... What's the matter? What's wrong?"

"Mamma..." His voice is hardly more than a quiet whimper. "I feel
s-sick, mamma... I f-feel so sick..."

"Aww, pumpkin... shhh... don't you worry now, mamma's here..."

Carefully easing him up from the floor, cradling him in her arms, she
rises, heading back toward the bed, rocking him slowly back and
forth, still talking softly. Grabbing the washbasin from the little
locker under her bedside table, she places it within reach on the bed.

"M-mamma... I don't w-wanna be sick, mamma..."

"Shhh.... there now..."

Seeing the fear in her son's eyes, her heart aching with pity, she
holds him closer, strokes away his curls and places a kiss on his
forehead... yes, he is definitely a bit too warm to the touch... and
yet, she can feel him shivering...

Gathering up the top blanket, she gingerly wraps it around her little
charge, rubbing his back in a soothing motion, still rocking him
slowly, encouraging him to lean against her chest... his little
fingers wrapping themselves around her free hand as he snuggles up
against her, his warm breath dampening the rim of her nightshirt at
her throat.

And slowly, gradually, the sobs subside, his breaths becoming longer
and deeper, and she can feel his grip loosen up around her hand as he
finally sinks into a deep sleep.

And she will not even move until the morning comes.
