Frodo had hoped that Gandalf would take him along, into the West, but that invitation never came. Despair grew in him, and at last he crept away from Bag End in the middle of the night, intent on finding a place where he could end the pain and his life at one blow, without grieving Sam, or Merry, or anyone who loved him. Caution: suicidal depression
