Shadowed Light

Like spirits they pass, Through tall silent grass, As they glide through the shadows of night, And though filled with grief, Without rest, without sleep, They glow with ethereal light. Like ghosts they walk by, And the tears that they cry Are bitterly strewn on the ground, And bidding farewell To the vale and the dell, They are silent and make not a sound.
Oh, great Elvendom! How far you had come, And now into darkness you fall, With the tears you have wept And the oaths you have kept And the ruins of splendorous halls. Wise were the bright Elves, And legends now tell Of the evils that they have tamed And through all the years And all of the tears Their light has dimmed and waned.
And now in the night, I see the soft light Of the Elves as they ride nigh And pale are their cloaks, And the sorrow that stokes The fire in their eyes. To the sea they will go, Whither then, I don’t know, Though it’s said there’s a beautiful place That will bring back the gladness, Will banish the sadness That has so darkened their grace.
Sad is my heart To watch them depart To a world not open to me And watch them I will, And I do watch them still, For one day only tales they will be. Dark is a land Where no Elven folk stand, Where memory is all that is left. And dark shall it be When over the sea Is the only place that they are kept.
