The City of Stone  by Elvenesse

The Hidden City

In the city of light the white walls gleam
Across the streets: a reminder of home.
Yet there I had freedom, here I can dream
Of wide open spaces and be alone

In my dreaming – for it seems that others
Are now content in this prison of light.
I am a child of kings, yet my brothers
Seek to protect me from the dark of night.

Why so? We are the people of the stars,
And I am not frightened by the dark.
I will not be confined, though evil mars
The earth. For here all is cold and stark.

I now leave to visit my father’s kin,
Confine me not, for evil shall not win.

I Turn Away

Hate and love: forever entwined
As we danced that eternal dance.
If you could see within my mind
Oh if you would but only glance.

When I think of you I fear you,
The terrible look in your eyes.
When I think of you I hate you
For you have never heard my cries.

When I think of you I love you
With every memory and kiss.
When I think of you I want you
For every moment that was bliss.

I turn away and still I look,
And yet no more: I close this book.
