· Chapter 1: Pippin's Poor Poetry
It is a rainy dreary ugly nasty no-good night
With not a flake of snow in sight (this is SE Texas, ya know!)
When I found this gem of a funny story
Which made me laugh....um....uncontrollably (and that doesn't rhyme either!)
Chigger, and Coriel - how hilarious!!!! I sat and giggled my way through this, starting with Pippin's pose and the argument about the overuse of "compose" and whether or not "authored" was a word! HA!!
Then that awful poem! I can remember in my Lit classes having to pick those poems to pieces...dissect them word by bloody word...and explain the imagery, the author's feelings/purpose, the figures of speech, ad nauseum. Ughhhh!
Loved it, loved Gimli's 3 words and Legolas' 1000! How appropriate! :-)
And LOVED the catch at the end - Ralph W. Emerson indeed! HAHAHAHAHA *snort*
Well done, and thanks for some much needed giggles on a yucky night! :-)))))

Heehee! :) Gosh, it's been well over half a year since I've gotten a review. I'd almost forgotten my password to get in! :P
Hey, be happy! :) I'd rather be stuck in Texas on a rainy dreary ugly nasty no-good night without snow than up here in Virginia with the exact same weather. We've only had one day of snow this year.
Anyway, I'm glad we were able to perk the night up a bit. :) (And thankfully, all I had to do with this poem for school was read it. No questions, worksheets, tests . . . nothin'.) :)
God Bless; and thanks for the review!

A poem and a surprise! Nicely done. I actually thought Pippin's poem was good, although I did not recognize the poet. The squabbling over the use of "authored" was amusing also. Best regards - Chathol-linn

That's hilarious! Who would have thought that Pippin's poetry would end up in literature books while Legolas's would not? LOL
Author's reply
I think I'd rather read Legolas'. ;)
Thanks a lot! :)

Too funny! I love your last little tag about RWE. Another bit of the puzzle falls into place.
Hey, I just read a story that I think you and Coriel would like. It's titled One Year in Mirkwood, by daw the minstrel. Have you read much of her work? I just now discovered her and I am working my way through her chronicles of Legolas and the Mirkwood Realm. This particular story doesn't look like it has been read much, but I thought it was terrific.
If you read it and leave a review . . . tell daw I said hi . . .
Thanks for the funny fic!
Author's reply
Thank you! This is what comes of "great literature" when you give it to a high school student. :)
We'll try to go check daw's story out, but time hasn't been very free around here lately. :) I don't think I've ever read anything of hers, but Coriel has. So I'll look at it.
Thanks again!

Oh, great scot! This is absolutely hysterical; I'll never look at Emerson the same way again! I can understand everyone's confusion about it not rhyming, although Merry was a bit mean to Pip. Ah, well, this rocked. Keep it up!
Author's reply
As much as Merry loves his cousin, I don't imagine anyone was much in the mood for his poetry; and Sam and Frodo just don't seem as likely to be rude as Merry. :) Don't get me wrong, though, Merry's my favorite of the four.
I've hated reading Emerson ever since grade school. >_<

So Pippin is not a poet?
And no doubt his friends already know it.
for they told him the same
that his poetry was lame
so Pip told them to take it and, um, SHOW it.
Okay -- as a foremost authority on bad poetry, having written enough of it in my time, I had to laugh repeatedly at the commentary that the poem did not rhyme. Such laughter took the form of a rhyming couplet. thanks a lot, Chigger!
Author's reply
I must admit that I got an attack of the giggles when I read YOUR poem. It's much better than Pippin's anyway. I'm still slogging through the poetry section of my literature book and the rest of the peoms aren't much better. Some people may like it, but I can't stand Poe's The Raven and I've read it more times that I would have liked. Too weird for me. I prefer Longfellow's Paul Revere's Ride. I have a lot of that one memorized. At least it ryhmes! Thanks for the review.

LOL! I love the description of the "poet's pose". I actually rather like the poem, even though I tend to prefer poems that rhyme. The language is beautiful. ^_^
Author's reply
Well, I'm sure Emerson will be glad to know that someone liked it. :) Thanks for the review!

Laughed my self silly. I particularly loved that it took Legolas at least three dozen or more words to say what Gimli accomplished in three, i.e., "it doesn't rhyme"! Funny. Is it possible to write anything with Pippin in it that is not endearing?
Author's reply
Thank you for the feedback. Yes, Elves are usually more eloquent than dwarves, but I must admit that Coriel helped me with that part. And I would agree that Pippin is usually the funniest and most endearing of the four hobbits, but Merry is my favorite. :)

hahahahaha
I *knew* it had to be a real poem. How do people manage to write such? I admit to having a taste for poetry that has a definite rhyme and rhythm to it. Thanks for the author's note.
Author's reply
I really can't tell you how people manage to, not only write, but sell that kind of "poetry." I like poems that rhyme and flow nicely, but that did neither. I just hated it and knew I had to make fun of it somehow. Sorry Pippin! Thanks for the review.

lol, poor, Pippin. At least he, uh, got the others in a good mood. That was cute, though. I liked how everyone kept saying the same thing! Thank you for your time!
Author's reply
The reason everyone kept saying the same thing, is because that's what I kept saying as I read it. I found that "poem" to be absolutely awful, don't you agree? Thanks for the feedback.

That was very entertaining. I often wonder what they talked about to pass the time. This is as good a guess as any. I like the way Pippin struck a pose to recite his poem. Very funny!
Author's reply
You know Pippin, he's comical about everything, and I always thought the "poet's pose" was rather comical looking. Coriel had to help me in worming my story into what Tolkien had written, and I think she did a darn good job, too. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hehehe!!! The Hobbits aren't the only ones with hysterics!!!! Hehehe!!! *ahem* Anyway... Very well written!
Author's reply
I'm glad to hear you liked it. I wrote it when Coriel was having a bad day, and I think it cheered her up, too. Thanks a lot!
