Yes, they learned it from the very best--from Frodo himself! And excellent exercise, I know.
Author's reply
I know, too! I've been going through hand and wrist exercises for a year now, and every little bit (or sponge) helps.

Aha! So THAT'S how it was done, is it? No, Gandalf isn't prone to the Took spell, is he????
Author's reply
Of course not! Well, not that he'd admit...

Trust a slightly tipsy Pippin! Oh, dear, and Gimli was just sharpening his axe, was he? Shall we see how well it shaves Hobbit feet?
Author's reply
Sometimes it's more fun *not* writing a scene (such as 'what happens next...') than writing it! I'm sure Gimli will show admirable restraint. :D

Does he know what he's doing, sending that particular Hobbit child off to get cake? And that these two would get along so well from the start is only to be expected, I suppose.
Author's reply
I always felt, from the way Tolkien wrote, that Gandalf had a special fondness for and relationship with the Tooks. I can well imagine that he'd keep his eye on them.

The earlier ficlets were posted in 2004, but this new one was just added. That might be the reason you didn't see the others. Thank you for enjoying them!

"peered deeply into the child's eyes" and, no doubt into his soul. I always thought that Gandalf was as hard on Pippin all of the time as he was because he could see what Pip was capable of, and had a special spot for him. Delightful!
Author's reply
I agree with you. Gandalf truly wanted Pippin and Merry on the Quest, and he no doubt 'saw' great potential in both of them.

Another great piece! "This one's different",indeed! I need to find again where it was and who wrote it, but somewhere I saw a story where the reason both why Elrond was not going to let Pippin go with the fellowship, and the reason why he did were both the same. He and Gandalf both saw in Pippin a force of nature which caused things to happen around itself. A catalyst, the center of the tornado, if you will. I think all of us who read about him and love his stories agree that someone as unique as Pippin had to be different all along. thank you for a look at his beginning.
Author's reply
I think the story you're referring to is an older one of mine, "A Matter of Time". Thank you for remembering it!

These were a marvellous discovery, Shirebound. I don't know how I missed them.
I love the way Pip has everyone wrapped round his finger. I was giggling at the idea of him trying to swing from Asfaloth's tail and calling him 'nice horsie!' Bwahahahahahaha!!!!!!! *snork*
Thank you for another wonderful collection of hobbity tales. I'm a melted gooey puddle now!

“This one’s different,” Merry informed his cousin seriously.
LOL!!! Shirebound, this is wonderful! Thank you for sharing :)
Author's reply
Thank *you*! Pippin is just such fun to write, especially through the eyes of others.
I had to read this one again. It's my favourite of all your ficlets. LOL! This is really cute:
Frodo beamed at the two of them. “You’re my favorite cousins, again.” He began to slowly squeeze the sponge over the basin.
Sam pulled Pippin aside. “Mr. Pippin,” he whispered, “I thought Strider told us that Mr. Frodo only had to squeeze that thing five times.”
“Did he?” Pippin asked innocently. “Well even if he did, look how smug Frodo looks! He needs to think he’s gotten the best of us once in a while, you
know.”
“That’s pretty sneaky,” Sam said admiringly. “Who taught you how to do that?”
“Merry and I learned from the best, Sam,” Pippin murmured, gazing fondly at Frodo. “The very best.”
Awww! Off to read the next one!
God bless,
Galadriel
Author's reply
You sweetie. Thank you. I'm rather fond of this one, myself! Those cousins just bring out the fluff in me.
Haha! I don't know whose side to take! Of course Merry and Pip are doing the right thing in getting their cousin to exercise his hand, but then half the time I can't tell when Frodo is teasing or when he isn't. And I have to sympathise with dear, protective Sam, because I'd be the same way...only I'd add, "Mr. Pippin, Mordor? That is not funny!" :-) I love every one of these! Just what I needed after a very tiresome day! God bless,
Galadriel
