Sage · 17 February 2026 · Chapter 18: Mustering the Eotheod

"It was dark. Cold stars of adamant glittered against the black satin night, casting ghost light on a haze of ground fog"... great description. The more I read this story the more I see the enormous parallels to the great battle in that future time of the LOTR where the Rohirrim came to the aid of Gondor and even down to a Chieftain of the Dunedain giving advice to the King of the Rohirrim.

Sage · 17 February 2026 · Chapter 17: Maneuvers

You start off each chapter with excellent descriptions; this time with the armament of the riders. And then you move into the cavalry tactics. I suspect you have done research into these things as the have the ring of truth!

Author's reply

Research is part Tolkien's own work, Roman and Persian tactics, Middle Ages and just created as a logical means of movement and communication with the resources they had at the time

Sage · 17 February 2026 · Chapter 16: Dezoch

I'm glad you provided the maps in the beginning. They will come in handy.

Sage · 17 February 2026 · Chapter 15: Orcs

I like the thuggish and brutal portrayal of the enemy.

Sage · 15 February 2026 · Chapter 13: Messages

Gandalf has now been firmly planted in the story. I wonder what he has up his magic sleeve for later?

Sage · 15 February 2026 · Chapter 10: Decisions

You continue to show Eorl to be a wise leader; letting all important parties a say and gaining consensus.

Sage · 15 February 2026 · Chapter 9: On the March

I like that you let us into his mind, see his doubts and review the rationale for his commitment.

And we also get a sense of how lonely decisions can be at the top, especially with so much at stake and so many lives hinging on his strategy.

Arnakhor! I didn't leave reviews on every chapter, which is what I usually do because the story was such a page-turner that I wanted to read it as quickly as possible. I really loved this story! You covered this portion of history so very well and really made it come alive. I am fascinated with the Rohirrim as much of my own writing will attest. There were a couple of times I was late for work because I wanted finish the chapter I was reading. LOL! The detail of the battle and troop movements and strategy was well done and showed a lot of hard work. thanks for this! :-) Mirkwoodmaiden

Thank you so much for your kind review! I did research battle strategies and tactics from the Romans through the early Middle Ages to help me grasp what was at stake. I did stick to the thin details on the whole thing provided in Tolkien's works, from the journey of Borondir, some details of the ride of Rohirrim down the Anduin and the brief description of the battle itself. So there was much to fill in and an opportunity to give the reader the perspective from all the players good and bad. So glad it was a page turner!

Sage · 31 January 2026 · Chapter 7: Gondor's Plea

I like that Eorl at his young age is wise enough to ask Aragost to be his adviser and I love this line which describes Aragost, "He could not in good conscience claim the lineage of the kings of men and turn his back on Gondor in hour of need."

Sage · 31 January 2026 · Chapter 6: Eorl

Good descriptions of Eorl and Aragost. And I never knew what happened to Elrond's wife; interesting.

Sage · 29 January 2026 · Chapter 5: To Framsburg

"It was a still clear night. The moon shone bright and hard. The first wisps of ground fog were collecting in the low folds of the land." You are always painting the surroundings in our minds.,

Sage · 29 January 2026 · Chapter 3: The Undeeps

Your visuals, description of the environment, is always so rich. I also like how you lay out the stakes.

Sage · 22 January 2026 · Chapter 1: The Watchful Peace Ends

"The two men came in out of the storm, brushing epaulets of snow from their shoulders." I love the imagery of this phrase. I like how this chapter foreshadows all that is to come... much has transpired over the centuries in this quiet pub in Bree.

Sage · 22 January 2026 · Chapter 0: Author's Note

An entire novel on the exploits of a Chieftain of the Dunedain as he intersects with the Rohirrim!? This is essentially a foreshadowing of the epic ending that occurred in the LOTR almost 500 years in the future.

Mirkwoodmaiden · 22 January 2026 · Chapter 1: The Watchful Peace Ends

Arnakhor! I am really liking this story. I love the storyline of how the Eotheod (sp?) were gifted with the land that became Rohan! Still reading but just wanted to drop a line to say "Wonderful." Mirkwoodmaiden

Oh, my! When I clicked on this title, I was expecting to see just one or two chapters (you can tell I did not look at the summary very carefully, but my eyes are tired, so I'm just skimming at this point). Quite unexpectedly, I can see quite a few chapters to look forward to reading this weekend! And is the story "in progress"? I guess I'll find out when I return to start reading in earnest. Anyhow, I just wanted to let you know I'm looking forward to reading further.
