· Chapter 34: The Situation at Edhellond
Finrod is cruel. To tell the young elves to put Monopoly away, without giving them time to check who had won...! And that after playing it for 18 hours! I wouldn't be surprised if the Three Amigos and Nell rebelled one day.
It is quite telling that some elves rather sit in trees in the middle of a blizzard than enjoy a warm fire inside Edhellond. It must have been emotionally hard time for everyone. I feel sorry for Ernest, it is hard when something is so very far from what was expected.
I was quite surprised to hear that Glorfindel has ruled some mortal realm. How is that possible, everyone must have realized that he is not human in the same way as others?
And just what did Celeborn do in Valinor to get that sort of reaction from some elves?
Author's reply
Hi someone. I don't think Finrod really understands the significance of Monopoly. *grin* And I think it telling that the Three Amigos and Nell put it away without a single protest.
The whole situation has been hard on everyone emotionally, especially for certain Elves.
As for Glorfindel, there were times in history where the existence of Elves and Dwarves and what-have-you would have been accepted as fact. I suspect that Glorfindel rescued the people of a certain valley somewhere from invaders or whatever and ended up ruling them for a time before handing the rule over to a mortal and moving on. I don't know the entire story, but perhaps someday I will.
And everyone underestimates Celeborn, and I suspect that's doubly true of the Amanian Elves. He married Galadriel after all. That should tell people something right there. *grin*
Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

It seems that nothing can change Glorfindel, not even an experience like that. *grin* That is one stubborn elf, going after the twins the second he is awake... or at least trying to. I really liked Glorfindel's reaction to seeing himself (not handsome and looking like something an orc has dragged in).
I'm curious about the "Being of Light". Olórin or someone else?
I also think that this may be the first time Glorfindel has been bested by a five feet tall woman.
Author's reply
Glorfindel is... Glorfindel. LOL!
I've left it ambiguous as to who the Being of Light might be, but I suspect it's an aspect of Atar, because I think He's the only one Who would have been able to deal with Glorfindel, especially in the spiritual state. The fact that Glorfindel doesn't recognize the Being should not be surprising, since he has never seen Atar or even any of the Valar or Maiar in their true spiritual forms.
And I think you're right about this being the first time Glorfindel has been bested by a five-foot tall mortal woman. I think that rather than her choking him surprised him more than anything. LOL!
Thanks for reviewing, someone. I appreciate it.

It's highly interesting to read how you solve out the webs you've put them all into. Do you plan it all beforehand, and know how it'll end?
On a side note, the reactions of the Valinorean elves to Celeborn's name hint there's a story behind it... Would you ever write it?
Thank you for writing and sharing.
Ninquetari
Author's reply
Hi Ninquetari. Sometimes I have things planned out and other times I just let the characters go their own way. I always know how a story begins and how it will end. My job is to get to the end and the route that is taken is often quite surprising.
As for writing about Celeborn in Valinor and why the Valinórean Elves blanched at his name... I can't say that will ever happen, but you never know.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. It's much appreciated.

Hello Fiondil!
So dear Glorfindel is finally awake!! I'm so happy for him!! Though I know the recovery will be long and a little painful, more so if he is overdoing it. But ohh well, was kind of expecting him to act like that... I would have been deatly worried if he acted complacent. Though I hope Finrod can divise some games or entertainments to keep Glorfindel content and resting in a bed.
I lked that neither the Valar or the Maiar were willing to take any chances on his recovery, deciding to better be there all the time. Also I'm wondering how does Namo feel to have people praying to him hoping to avoid death?
Glorfindel is right in that the twins will listen only to him and no one else, he must be the one to go pick them up!! I wouldn't like being the twins when he does catch up to them, beacuse they will not only have to deal with an angry and dissapointed Glorfindel, but also with an angry Ron for taking his daughter, an angry Finrod for leaving and therefore having his brother go pick them up even though he's quite hurt and an angry Kyle for disobeying his orders. Although if and when they return, will they take up residence again in Edehellond or will they now move to an apartment or hotel for the moment? To have some distance from the Valinorean Elves I mean...
From the last chapter, it felt somehow forced and as an order to have Helena apologize to Glorfindel, I just don't feel she is sorry of what she said... I'm quite disapointed by Finrod's reaction to Helena's comment, I was expecting him to be furious and while you do mention that he was, he kind of lost that anger when he heard what she said, that Glorfindel was just a Lord of a House that no longer exists. In essence he did nothing, just reminded her that Glorfi is his brother and as far as he is concerned that is the highest tittle. So any claim to authority Glorfindel may have comes from that title? I hope you have Glorfi being horribly dissapointed in that horrible elleth and having him look into other fish in the sea or at the very least have him reafirm his bachelorhood.
Great chapter as always!
Monalex
Author's reply
Hi Monalex. Finrod is furious, but he is dealing with an elleth rather than with an ellon and his responses to her are going to be different. She knows how angry and disappointed he is in her simply by him addressing her as "Daughter", which is not actually a term of endearment so much as a warning that he is speaking to her as a parent to a child or, in his case more specifically, as a king to a subject. Whether Helyanwë truly understands what she has done and what she needs to do to make things right again is another question and we will see how Glorfindel handles this eventually. Right now, he's too intent on haring off to Fairbanks after the Twins to worry about anything or anyone else.
Thanks for your comments. They are much appreciated.

Fiondil, something randomly popped into my head - is Amroth a fan of the name Alexander because he'd like to name one of the kids after Alex? (Though that was originally just a code name, now it seems like it's going to be his official chosen name anyway.) Maybe no connection but had to ask!
Thanks!

At least Earnur seems sincere in accepting Vorondur's apology. I'm not so sure about Vardamir. His apology seems not in the right frame of mind. It sounds as if he is just going through the motions without meaning it. Hopefully, he will come to his senses.
Loved the Monopoly marathon. It evokes fond memories of games that went on for days.
Finrod is in a dangerous mood. He needs some way to let off steam. This run sounds like a good idea.
The youngster are caught in the middle. No wonder they try to hide, they don't want to take sides and don't know what to do.
I could rattle Helyanwe. I think she still has no idea, what was so offensive about her words. She sees the results and realizes that Finrod is angry, but the reason is out of her experience. She has a lot to learn.
Author's reply
Vardamir needs more time, I think to process what's been happening. Some people just take longer than others to get a clue.
Finrod is indeed in a dangerous mood, doubly so for being who he is. In many ways, he's more dangerous than Glorfindel can ever be. And Helyanwë does have a lot to learn, about Glorfdinel and about living in the mortal world.

So who's the being of light? Glorfindel's met, over the course of "Elf Interrupted", all the Valar, Eru, and the Flame Imperishable, but he doesn't seem to recognize his visitor.
Then again, he had trouble recognizing himself, too; I suppose he's not at the top of his mental game at the moment.
Author's reply
Hello Sasha. You're the first one to even ask about the being of light. I've purposely left it ambiguous so readers can draw their own conclusions. I think it may be Atar, or it could be Manwë in his true form (having established in "Elf, Interrupted" that Glorfindel is or was Manwë's apprentice). That Glorfindel doesn't recognize his visitor isn't surprising, since he has never seen Eru or the Valar in their true states and wouldn't necessarily recognize their aurae for what they are. And, as you point out, he's not at the top of his mental game at the moment, and that, too, could be a factor.
Anyway, thanks for leaving a comment. I very much appreciate it.

Yea!! My hero's back!!!!!....and there he goes.
So I guess Glorfindel is going to see the hospital in Fairbanks now. He is putting himself in danger medically and I don't think even an Elf can recover *that* quickly from what he's been through.
So people who've had NDAs often don't recognize themselves. Interesting!!!
I always love Namo. The only other Death that seems as Good in popular modern books (and yeah, I think of this as a book) is Terry Pratchett's, though *very* different personality.
Looking forward to Fairbanks on Friday.

That was not unsettling at all for Glorfindel to wake up and cite an out of body experience as reasoning for needing to go to Fairbanks. LOL
It is amusing watching folks reason with him almost like bribing a two year old. "I am not tired!" Followed by the stomping of a foot and an immediate loss of consciousness.
I hope the medical personnel can hold onto him beyond noon of the next day. He is far weaker than he realizes...

Hi Ellie. Now, not unsettling at all, at all. LOL!
With Glorfindel, you almost have to bribe him into doing something when he's hell bent on doing just the opposite. And hopefully they'll be able to keep him in bed long enough for him to actually begin to heal. He's as weak as a kitten, though he refuses to acknowledge it.

Kevana, you're totally right how this is another perfect example how the story sometimes shows we're really dealing with Elves here, seeing how a Mortal having similar injuries would not be out of the woods, so to speak of for a longer time.
Still, having Finrod in mind who's been suffering from the after effects from getting shot for a very long time, I think Glorfindel might not have recovered enough yet for a nice little trip to Fairbanks, especially since that nice little trip is bound to turn into something more.
Now, I know it has been said before Finrod has been recovering slowly because his body has not experience any major injuries so far, while I think this has been quite te opposite for Glofindel through the ages. Ellon can't stay long enough out of trouble not to get more or less badly hurt once in a while.
But still, I think Glorfindel is wanting to do things more than a little too fast here, no matter what his condition is.
Author's reply
And it's so much fun writing about Elves and their powers and abilities, yet show them to be vulnerable and 'human' just like the rest of us. And you're right that Glorfindel isn't going to recover immediately from what happened to him, as we'll see along the way. He's pushing it and that's not a good thing. Last few chapters, we had a lot of Glorfindel without him being present, now we have a lot of Glorfindel with him actually being present. And how!
When reading Kyle had banned all the elves, I actually felt worried about that, so it's good to see "Nate" and Olórin aren't taking any chances with him.
- “I get it all the time, people praying when they feel Death is near, hoping to avoid it for themselves or others or, in rare cases, welcoming it. Sometimes I even listen.” -
Wow, Námo is really being Námo here, now isn't he? (I was looking for a word to describe him, then found out Námo was actually the one applying best to it lol)
- “At the moment, they are where they need to be,” Námo replied. “Manveru and Erunáro are keeping an eye on them.”
“So Fionwë told me,” Olórin said with a nod. “Twin troublemakers to look after twin troublemakers. Now there’s a recipe for mayhem if there ever was one.” -
Well, it's good to know at least some Maier are there to look after the twins, even though Olórin's descriptions sounds like a recipe for mayhem to me too. I really hope you're not planning on putting them through too much *snorts*
- “I’m not very handsome, am I? I thought I was more handsome than that.” -
*snorts* This isn't really the right moment for Glorfindel for being all too vain.
And then Glorfindel is awake, and o my! Nurse Callahan sure knows how to handle a situation. Why does Wiseman get all this over-competent medical staff? Must have something to do with the Valar luring them there.
Harris's knowledge of Sindarin is too funny. Too bad Glorfindel wasn't able to tell more about the attack.
Finrod seemed to know there was a chance Glorfindel might wake up out of healing sleep early? (those pesky Reborns all the time!) Why didn't he inform the other healers about that, or at least discus the option with him?
Seriously, whether he thinks the Twins need him or not, wether the Twins really need him or not, I really don't think it's a good idea for Glorfindel to go off to Fairbanks now in a rush. This is almost bound to go wrong..
6336, a wild ride ahead, I can see that too.
UTfrog, I'll drink most things as long as it's no alcohol and no coffee: sodas, fruit juice, water, flavored or not. So have a go at it.
Author's reply
Hi FV_Whisper. Like Derek says, Námo is a verb waiting to happen and we see it here.
Glorfindel is being is usual Reborn self but I don't think even Finrod anticipated him getting out of healing sleep as quickly as he did so he was unprepared to warn anyone. Not that a warning would do anyone any good.
Whether Glorfindel convinces everyone that they should let him leave for Fairbanks immediately remains to be seen. I'm sure Finrod will insist that he stay in the hospital at least for a little bit until they know for sure he won't suffer a relapse.
Anyway, while they are all dealing with Glorfindel in Wiseman, we'll be heading south to Fairbanks in the next chapter to see what's up with the Twins and Sarah.

That Glorfindel's able to sit up just a few days after nearly being killed/enduring major surgery is another of those "wait a minute" moments that you throw in your stories that helps bring home how tough the Elves are. Imagine recovering that quickly from something that awful!
And now he wants to go dashing off after the Twins and Sarah, well, as bad an idea as that might sound, he's usually been right about it before in your other stories.
Stubborn is for sticky door hinges, Glorfindel is in a class of his own, LOL!
So nice to see Dr. Harris again, I really like him for all that he's a minor character. And that nurse is a trip.
Two quotes that stood out in particular:

And:

Hi UTfrog. We'll see what is in store for the Twins and Sarah come the next chapter, so you won't have long to wait. I'm glad you liked Lord Námo's comment on prayers and my description of Glorfindel being wrapped in light. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

· Chapter 35: An Interlude with Glorfindel
When Glorfindel ended up in the hospital, I thought to myself that he was going to be an absolute joy when he woke up again, NOT!!! And I was right, wasn't I?
I rather liked Nurse Callahan - she doesn't mess around, and that is certainly necessary with this particular patient!

Hi Sunny. Glorfindel a joy? I think not. LOL! And Nurse Callahan surprised me when she did what she did. Gotta watch out for those army nurses. They don't fool around.
Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.
