“That’s Loren for you,” Elrohir stated with a grin. “So now we don’t have to worry about him..."
Famous last words...
Ah, more Fortunates about to be introduced to the famous hot chocolate!
I do feel sorry for the Fairbanks Elves, every time an instance of name-dropping happens. Still, add to that the possibility of meeting a childhood hero! (And wouldn't Finrod cringe to hear some of the stories that have been told about him... Especially what was said about Glorfindel's stories -- that he told stories that actually happened to someone, but not necessarily to Finrod, did I read that right?)
frightening the children
*sigh* (for so many reasons...)
Glorfiddle! What fun! (I would really love for someone to call him that to his face, all unwitting. I'm sure he's classy enough to take it.)
“Gareth,” Gwyn growled at his brother, not looking up.
O those embarrassing younger siblings! (I am one, actually.)
About the dreams. Did he conduct the interview in the dream (and the Valar knew how the Mortal would answer)? Did the dream give him the questions to ask in a real-life interview? I wasn't quite clear on that.
(raising my hand for some cherry crisp with vanilla ice cream)
Author's reply
Hi Lindelea. You did indeed read it right that Glorfindel told stories of events that actually happened but not necessarily to either Glorfindel or Finrod. He merely put himself and his gwador in the roles of the heroes to amuse small elflings.
As for the dream, it is merely a vehicle for the Valar to aid Gwyn in knowing whether a person was right for the group or not. If Gwyn, in consulting with Gareth, was contemplating on asking someone to join Gwaith-en-Angbor the Valar, or more specifically, Irmo would set it up so that there was a shared dream between Gwyn and the perspective fighter. In that way, the answers the person gave would be his own. Gwyn would merely make note as to whether the answer was an 'A' answer or a 'B' answer to the questions. I suspect that the other person would have no memory of the dream (how many of us really remember all our dreams?) but Gwyn would wake up knowing whether to ask the person to join the group or not.
Thanks for asking because I'm sure others have the same question. I hope this clears it up. And thanks for commenting. It's much appreciated.

*grin* MY persona was from Shrewsbury. (Influence by Brother Cadfael, of course!)
This is really getting more and more intriguing, and my, oh, my--the Valar have been very busy little bees up in Alaska, haven't they?
I enjoyed seeing the mortal reactions to the various revelations of Elladan and Elrohir's adventures, but even more the "young" Elves' reactions to learning about Glorfindel and Finrod.
You know, you've made Mondays and Fridays my favorite mornings of the week!
Author's reply
I loved the Brother Cadfael series, both the book and the movies.
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter, Dreamflower, and that you are finding the story to be more and more intriguing. And while I personally think Mondays should be outlawed, I'm glad I am able to make them a little brighter for you. *grin* Thanks for leaving a review. It's much appreciated.

Dreams are an interesting way to recruit people. Pity, though, that the twins apparently can't join as they have not passed that test and have no time for full-time membership.
I think that it would be good for the people of Wiseman to learn about the other boot camps. It might go a long way to remove stress and let them know they're not the only place in the world run over with elves.
Poor Finrod, he most likely has no idea what stories has been told about him to countless elfings over the years!
Author's reply
Hi someone. I think the Twins and Elves in general would automatically be allowed to join Gwaith-en-Angbor. The dream recruitment is for Mortals only. And you're right that it would help the people of Wiseman to know that there may be other boot camps and that they're not alone in preparing for the coming war.
I can just imagine Finrod's horror when he learns what tales have been told of him to entertain demanding elflings. LOL!
Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it very much.

Another good summary chapter. You pack plenty of information into few paragraphs. Seems like everyone can learn to work together. I hope attitudes have improved in Wiseman before Gwyn and Gareth meet Finrod. I do like the idea of various camps being set up for training. Hope you have a great weekend.
Author's reply
Hi UTfrog. There is a lot of information that the Twins and Serindë as well as readers unfamiliar with how the SCA is organized needed. We'll be seeing how things stand in Wiseman fairly soon and eventually we'll see Gareth, at least, meeting with the Elves of Wiseman and how he is treated by them. Gwyn will show up later. Anyway, it seems logical that the Valar would have many different camps in remote places around the world where Elves who never Sailed would train the Mortals sent to them. We may never learn of them directly, but we may hear of them eventually. Thanks for reviewing and have a great weekend yourself.

Holy Lightsabers, it's The Tart With The Cart, The Dish With The Fish.....there are a few more nicknames for Molly.
The Best Irish Stew and brown bread i ever ate was in Kilkenny. Darn good local ale too. Now I want to go back to Ireland.
A very enjoyable chapter (well, they all are) Can't wait to see what happens next. And how the Valinoreans eventually react to more local elves...hah! They might be outnumbered before long. Because seriously, someone needs to remind some of them they are not in Valinor anymore. And respect is earned, not gifted.
Author's reply
I'm sure there are *many* nicknames for Molly. LOL! I've never been to Ireland though that's on my list of places to visit before I die. Whether I'll ever get there is another thing.
I'm glad you found the chapter enjoyable. We'll be staying with the Twins and Serindë for a bit longer before we go back to Wiseman to see what Glorfindel et al are up to. And you're right that respect, unlike love, is earned and not a given.

She shoots! she scores! oh wait it bounced back out cause she didn't think he was an elf after she was so sure he was....dang it. But I am glad I was not able to guess for sure what Gwyn's race was. :)
Go Serinde! Glad she stood up for herself and told them to count her in on it also. Loved Elrohir's quip about "Elrohir of Imaladris is a good SCA name?" We poor mortals are constantly being freaked out with Maia popping in and out. Kind of wonder what is going to happen when someone has a heart attack... ;)
Gareth sounds like someone Nel and the Amigos will enjoy being around. Young, yet knowledgeable with the new world. ;)
Author's reply
Hi Laer. Always go with your first, instinctive guess, or at least that's what they used to tell us about taking multiple-guess exams. LOL!
Anyway, Serindë isn't the wallflower or wife-to-be-ornament people think she is. And if anyone were to have a heart attack with Maiar popping in and out, I'm sure said Maiar would be more than capable of performing CPR. *grin*
And I have no doubt that Nell and the Amigos would enjoy meeting both Gareth and Gwyn and we will see that happening later.

Well that did not turn out as I expected.
Yes, I'm still perusing while writing up Elf Academy review. Bad me!
Honestly, I thought, with the way the 'Maiar' had taken over Elladan, that it was an Umaiar. After all, no matter the circumstances, it was possession and THAT is taking away free will. I don't recall any maiar saying, 'hey, let me take you over for a bit' and Dan saying 'yes' in your typescript. And while the maia may have *said* he had permission, I personally would flog his backside if he tried that with me. Just my take on it. :)
Like everyone else, I'm laughing over the Star Wars lines; and for the record, it was Burt Ward who portrayed Robin, while Adam West was Batman. Yup, 60 year old geek here. LOL
The interplay between the elves is very cautious; both sides I think. And part of me just wonders what the hapless mortals are making of all this. *laughs*
Author's reply
Hi MikoNoNyte. Well, Elladan did give his permission, however implicit, and no lasting harm came to him. It's a thin line, and it's not something the Valar would countenance lightly. I suspect Manwë even consulted Eru on the matter first.
Thanks for the clearing up as to who played who. I remember watching the show but I'm lousy with names. *grin*
You're right that there is caution on both sides and I'm sure the Mortals were hanging onto every word and enjoying the show. *grin*

Interesting that you should pick the name of Molly Malone's for a restaurant. There is in fact one in Wellington, New Zealand which serves the most delicious Irish stew I have ever eaten. Nothing in the states comes close. Which I could get their recipe.

Hi Tari. Never been to New Zealand, but I would love to go there someday. I chose "Molly Malone" as being as Irish as you can get when I decided to have them all meet in an Irish pub but didn't want them to be traveling all the way across the city of Fairbanks to the Big I. I love the way elves talk about the past as if it were yesterday. I do wish the twins had given a little more info about themselves to the brothers, but their wariness is to be expected I suppose given all they have endured and the way the full bloods treated them in Wiseman. I like these new brothers. They are so cool. One of my all-time favorite lines is that exclamation mixing Star Wars and Batman. I laugh out loud every time I read it. This is such an amazing and enjoyable chapter. It is one of my favorites. Keep up the amazing work!
Author's reply
Hi Ellie. I think you're right about the Twins being wary, not only because of the way they've been treated by other full-blooded Elves, but also because, as Roy keeps reminding Sarah, they're at war and one has to be careful in times of war. Still, I think they like what they see in Gwyn and Gareth and these two, having had no contact with other Elves, other than their parents, probably don't care what the Twins' heritage is; they finally get to meet others of their kind.
I think the Batman/Star Wars line will be a favorite with everyone for some time to come. *grin*

Oh, I LOVE this! You do know this would be a dream come true for most SCAdians!
And now I've got this ear-worm running through my head...
Oh, the bombs went up, and the crunch came down, in the middle of the Pennsic War.
It left us stranded in Cooper's field, ten thousand souls and more.
We had nothing with us but what we'd brought: our cars and our camping gear
And our arms and armor, tools and skills, that we'd worked on all that year.
Chorus:
So dress your ranks, lift your pikes,
Tight as the teeth of a comb.
Rattling, clanking, down the road,
The War is going home... (Leslie Fish is a genius.)
I'm going to have to see if I can find my old cassette of "Serious Steel"
I also love Serinde's delight that she's no longer the "baby"!
This. Is. So. Much. Fun.

Hi Dreamflower. Oh,yes. Definitely. LOL!
Leslie Fish is indeed a genius. I probably won't make it to Pennsic this year but I think I'll try for next year, though I wouldn't be able to stay for the whole two weeks. Back in the day when I first joined, it was held on a single weekend. Times do change.

Good morning, meldonya!
The semester is over and I have a week before classes start up again so I was able to get caught up on the chapters I've missed while struggling with Intermediate Accounting II and Accounting Information Systems classes. I just loved it when the Twins and Serindë were led to the SCA and found more Elves. The Holy Batman line was priceless (I freely admit that I'm still a fan of the Adam West/Burt Ward show from the 60s). I also can't wait to meet Gwyn and Gareth's parents. Their dad, Tristan, sounds like he would have gotten along great with my Dad and Grandpa.
I'm thoroughly enjoying this story and look forward to what happens next. I also agree that Alex and Derek would have a ball in the SCA. I've been a member since 1979, though I'm on hiatus from doing events until I get my degree this December. In fact, my pen name I use to review is my SCA name.
See you (virtually) on Friday morning! I can't wait to see what happens next.

Holy lightsabers, Batman. It’s Luke Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi
I know a lot of people have already highlighted this, so let me join the crowd. Laughed out loud when I read this, and remembered fondly the hokey television show with Burt Ward and (I forget who played Robin). ("Holy hand grenade, Batman, it's Monty Python!" -- no, not really, I just think of a friend saying that, the first time we watched M.P. and the Holy Grail.)
I kind of suspected Elves were involved, especially the head honcho and maybe more. I wonder how many other SCA chapters and other re-enactors are providing amusement ("children playing dress-up"!) for yet-unfound Elves...? (Not lost, though. Nate knows where they all are. (I almost said "where the bodies are buried", a nice little cliche that really fits him well, but not really applicable here.)
Author's reply
Hi Lindelea. I can't remember who played Robin either but it was always fun to see what he would say next in a given situation.
There may quite a few Elves running around in such groups as the SCA, providing amusement. You never know. And Námo indeed knows where all the bodies are buried (and even those that are not).

· Chapter 36: What the Twins and Serindë Get Up To
I meant to leave a comment here earlier and forgot! Oh well... placing my bet on Gwyn being an Elf is rather anticlimactic now, but I love the idea that the Twins could sense a Maia because of their heritage; then again, the Maiar following them aren't exactly subtle! And the possible excursion to Dul Guldur? Oh, those plot bunnies!
I found the discussion of Umaiar scent interesting, and think it would be along the lines of something that once was beautiful but is now corrupted. So perhaps a scent that begins as fresh or sweet, but ends cloying and sickly sweet, decayed. (I was actually thinking of a scent like burning marijuana - to me, it starts as a "green" scent, but seems to turn into a scent that you can taste, and triggers the gag reflex.)
Author's reply
Hi Lyana. I think you're right about the Umaiarin scenta being corrupted. While there are plenty of plants that naturally give off a stink of one kind or another, I think realistically, the scent of an Umaia would still be whatever the original scent was but now cloying and sickly sweet and we've all had that experience with fruit going bad. It's an interesting concept. And yes, the possible excursion of the Twins to Dol Guldur would make an interesting tale in and of itself. A very nice gap filler if anyone is so inclined. *grin* Thanks for your thoughts. They're much appreciated.

So Gwyn is an Elf after all. So is Gareth. I have to so I noticed the later and had some thoughts about him, but there was too little given on him to note him down as an elf as well.
It looks like the fight has done the Twins some good!
Seriously, the Maiar Twins aren't that good at being subtle, now are they? And maybe should really try roadblocks next time.
“Uh, if you’re angels, where are your wings?” Ahh, love that comment.
“I’m driving this time, okay?” Because you can never be too sure with those Maiar around, right?
I was thinking earlier on how it would do Sarah some good not being the youngest anymore, and now some even younger elves show up, which is a good thing. But I think it would do everyone, even Gwyn and Gareth some good when Nimrodel and Amroth's babies are born, so they can be rightfully the youngest.
Seeing how long Gwyn and Gareth have been traveling westwards shows again just how long the Valar must have been planning everything concerning the Dagor Dagorath preparations in advance.
Tristan and Iseult. *snickers* Love their names.
Poor Gwyn and Gareth, a visit by Námo is worse enough already, but if you're even not used to it. No to mention most tales of Elven history might have changed and became less accurate over the years, like you already said in you reply, so I wonder what kind of an idea they had about Námo before he showed up.
And I have the idea there's a bit of a sibling rivalry going on between the brothers? Gareth seems to have a bit the idea everything is happening to his brother and not to him.
About the regular elves mentioned in the comments, I think it's neat we get to see some more of these, they must have made a good deal of the Elven population after all.
Kevana, you mentioned king Arthur, and I started re-reading Mists of Avalon some time ago, so my mindset is pretty arthurian atm and I wondered whether Gareth would have something to do with that last chapter. As for Merlin, I think Olórin would make a great choice. He already knows what it's like to be a wizard, right?
Author's reply
Hi FV_Whisper. When Amroth and Nimrodel's babies are born, they'll all be happy not to be the youngest anymore.
And Gwyn and Gareth being brothers, there's bound to be some sibling rivalry between them. It's only natural, but I suspect that when push comes to shove they watch each other's back.
It only stands to reason that the vast majority of Elves would be regular folk so naturally we are likely to encounter them, and really, most of the Wiseman Elves are regular folk, not heroes or royalty or anything important and that's as it should be.
Obviously, the ap Hywel parents were into the whole Arthurian/Welsh mythology thing with the names they adopted or gave their sons, but I doubt they had anything to do with the real Arthur.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to review. I appreciate it very much.

Oh, what a romp that was - a lovely way to start the week. :-) And more Elves - yippee! I'm hoping that when Glorfindel gets there, news of Valar appearances to other elves will help him feel that he's not quite so alone in this "prepare-for-Dagor-Dagorath" thing. Can't wait to see more of Gwyn and his family, and I just had to laugh at Serindë's delight at no longer being the youngest elf. There were so many good lines in this chapter; absolutely a delight to read!
I'd never hear of SCA before, but I had to look it up after reading this and found that there's quite an active group in my area. I might just have to check it out...

Holy Batman indeed! Loved the references to Star Wars and as someone else mentioned, Star Trek. And more elves, living openly in the mortal world. I had wondered in the reading the last chapter if they were. Now I am wondering where else Nate has found other elves and *commanded* them to start preparing for the Dagor Dagorath. The goth styled dude has to be aware of where every elf left in middle-earth resides so it stands to reason he is on a mission to make himself known to these elves.
Love Gwyn and Garath. It is going to be interesting when they meet Glorfindel and Finrod. I think Alex and Derrick would also be good members of the SCA there.
There is a lot of information to take in here. It will certainly make waiting until Friday a little easier.
Have a good week!
Author's reply
Hi rikki. The references were too good not to use. I imagine Námo is very aware where every Elf in Middle-earth is and is coordinating everything. He is, after all, a master strategist, or at least, he is in my universe (see "Wars of the Valar").
Glad you like Gwyn and Gareth. We'll be seeing more of them throughout the rest of this story, I promise. They are definitely not walk-ons. And you're right that Alex and Derek would fit right in with the SCA. We'll see how they react to the idea once they learn of it.

They ARE Elves! Well-spotted, everyone who caught that. :)
I about died at the Batman and Star Wars reference. Yes, swords of light = lightsabers!! Ahaha, yesss. Gwyn, I like you, man. Keep it up. Apparently my Star Wars Fan Detecting Radar(tm) was one person off, it was him and not Dietrich (though maybe Dietrich too, LOL!) And, "Next Generation Elves"? Subtle Star Trek reference as well? Hearing the theme song in my head now. *grin* I love geeky Elves. I love them so very much. (Maybe I'm living in the wrong part of the state, Ellie, if there is a nerd diaspora living in the Triangle! I've been thinking about a move to Wilmington...hm.)
Suddenly this idea of Elves living in modern day just felt a lot more casual here, maybe it's because these guys and their parents aren't famous names like Glorfindel and Co. but just "regular" people who're really well integrated. Like, oh yeah, just people who happen to be Elves wandering around and hiding in plain sight. Gotta love it.
I keep wondering if it's ever going to come out that one of them was King Arthur and/or Merlin!
Wow, this chapter was amazing, we have action and Maiar and Star Wars jokes and new Elves and the Twins and Sarah finding a new purpose! And mentions of Mr. Death Himself as well, haha. Apparently he's been a busier beaver than the Wiseman folks suspect.
It is a great idea to have the Twins and Sarah in Fairbanks, for so many reasons. They get some breathing room, they branch out their operations a little, the other healers have to step up their games. But I can't help but wonder, then, why Glorfindel is so desperate to get to them, if they're meant to be there? I guess we will see!
Also - no, no I am pretty sure Vairë does not use a Singer sewing machine, though I am also sure she could whip up her hubby's outfits in far less time than the space of an afternoon. That was too funny!
Such wonderful plot developments all around. This is fabulous. It feels like things are starting to move fast now.

Hi Kevana. Geeky Elves! LOL! Wait until you meet their dad. Now he's geeky.
And you're right that neither Gwyn nor Gareth nor their parents are famous, but just "regular" Elves and let's face it: only a small percentage of Elves would be considered heroes. The vast majority would just be regular folk. Even the majority of the Wiseman Elves fit that category.
As for Glorfindel, he has no knowledge of what is happening and only knows that the Twins are running away. He's been there before and knows that when the Twins go off the radar it's not a good thing for anyone. He's going to be surprised, as they all will be, when he finally catches up with them.

Da’s been seriously into physics and quantum mechanics ever since he met Max Planck and ol’ Albert. Gareth and I have no clue what he’s talking about half the time.”
"Da’s nutso,” Gareth said categorically. “You’d think he was a bloomin’ Noldo the way he goes on about things. No offense.” Oh, I SO hope that the parents will visit Wiseman as well! And I'm sure they have quite an interesting story of their own, or perhaps something for a Wiseman-related short story? Also, loved the "Next Generation Elves" concept.

“Holy lightsabers, Batman. It’s Luke Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi.” I don't think anyone has greeted Maiar like that before!
It is really interesting that even though the brothers are less than a thousand years old, they still have this almost regal feel and Gwyn acts like he is holding court. I wouldn't be surprised if they had been working in some government centuries ago. But at least these young elves know their history, if they recognized names like Glorfindel and Elrond.

Gwyn is an elf? And here I had him all pegged for a maia... His story is interesting though and the mention of Molly Malone sent me into the annual binge of the sixties music several weeks early. Usually it starts around the Midsummer...
“Likes to wear black, lots of it.” *snicker* I know I have mentioned it before, but I love your Namo.
So the twins are in SCA now? That's a lot of hats to wear, if they are continuing working in the hospital, as well as with the Elf Academy. Great for Serinde to find a purpose of her own; I got the impression she was feeling a bit insecure for being the only elf who had never known neither Valinor nor Middle-Earth.
Now the question is whether they get around to calling home before Glorfindel comes looking for them, breathing fire and painkillers?

Hi Dire. Well, the Twins aren't in the SCA yet, and they probably won't be too involved with it since they're going to be busy studying to be surgeons soon, but they'll help get the ball rolling.
Serindë knows Middle-earth, since she's lived there all her life. Probably what you mean is that she never knew the earlier ages when Elves still lived here and that is certainly true. Her only contact with the elven culture has been through her parents. In fact, she and the ap Hywel brothers are in the same boat in that respect.
As for whether they get around to calling home before Glorfinel catches up with them, that remains to be seen. *grin*
Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

This chapter was completely worth the wait. Since you failed to give the beverage warning, I nearly spit coffee out my nose with the "Holy Batman/Star Wars" comment. I can certainly imagine Nate's visit truly shaking up the young elves. It also appears their parents did a good job educating them in history. Thanks for a great morning read.

Hi UTfrog. I'm glad you found the chapter worth waiting for. Sorry about not providing a beverage warning. Getting a visit from Nate would be upsetting for anyone. Thanks for leaving a review. It's always appreciated.
