That was a fun feast. Finrod didn't forget how to act kingly after the first surprise. I found it interesting that Alex was fearing to lose himself again when assuming another persona. It is understandable considering his past, but it also shows that he is still grappling with everything that has happened. Now to get back to Wiseman and set up their own SCA group.
Author's reply
It was a fun feast, wasn't it, obsidianj? Once he got over his initial surprise, Finrod rose to the occasion in all his kingly splendor, even if he was wearing blue jeans and a hand-me-down houppelande. *grin*
Alex certainly has issues, but I think eventually he'll see that creating a persona for 'fun' is not the same as creating one for 'work', so to speak. So, I think eventually he'll join up, if only because Derek and Zach and his other friends that he's made in Wiseman have.
We'll see how things go when they all get back to Wiseman.
Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

So a feast, and it was nice to see everyone relaxing for a change. A lot of them really needed that.
Love the cloved lemon most of all. Here we still have a drink called 'bishop's wine' which is drank on New years eve and one of the ingredients is a clover lemon. I actually think it's pretty close to german gluhwein and the tradition around it too, but having never tasted it myself, cab't say for sure.
My dad once messed up preparing it: instead of cleansing the lemon, he peeled it, to great the outrage of his mother (the kind that could give Finrod's mother-in-law a run for her money, to give you an idea). So he used the cloves to 'dress up' the lemon to put the peels back in place again. So cloved lemons always crack me up!
“Sorry, my lord, I gave up older men along with my dolls,”
Oops, Glorfindel! *snickers*
Poor Daeron (I've really come to like this guy over the course of EA). It's not easy when Finrod goes al kingly and Glorfindel goes along with him.
Now back to Wiseman again, and things have been too quiet lately, so something is just bound to happen again...
Author's reply
They really did need it, FV_Whisper, especially Glorfindel and possibly Vorondur.
I've had gluwein, though I don't remember there being a cloved lemon in it. At any rate, it is a fun tradition, though I'm not sure if it's done all that much these days of abstinence and all, especially when there are children running about asking why mommy is kissing someone who isn't daddy. LOL!
Ah, you're the first to comment on Anastasia's quip about dolls and older men. Thank you. I thought that was so funny the way she managed to put him in his place so sweetly.
And Daeron is only half in earnest here. He knows his own worth, but he was never on elven lord, just Elu Thingol's chief minstrel, so even according him the title 'Lord' is more a courtesy than a reality. Still, I'm sure he gets tired of being (slightly) ignored.
And yes, back to Wiseman we go and we'll see what happens when they finally get back.
Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Busy week, finally have some time to review!
- “I prefer ‘out-of-body-experience’ myself,” Glorfindel said with a scowl. “It sounds much more dignified than ‘slipped your leash’. You make it sound as if I’m one of Ingwë’s hounds being naughty.” -
*snickers* Yes, I can see Glorfindel preferring that!
I love it how the SCA set up their meeting with the Elves in style. Most of the Elves seem not really convinced about it yet, but I think they'll turn around in time when they see what a group the SCA can do for their cause.
Alex seems to be spring back into agent mode again when first seeing the swords, but he comes around nicely later on.
Had to laugh about the comment about all Elves doing from Wales.
But Gwyn and Gareth are really turning out to be somewhat of a mystery. What catches me most is how they claim to have some Vanyarin ancestry. That's not the most common to expect among the Elves who remained after all. As intriguing is the part about a heritage they could never claim. There's a lot more to those two and their parents that meets the eye for sure.
Author's reply
Hi FV_Whisper. I'm glad you enjoyed the SCA set up. I'm sure the Elves will come around once they get used to the idea. Alex will always be 'Artemus', as Ron pointed out to him back in EA2, but purged of the darkness, so he will always be cognizant of weapons and their uses no matter what, but I think he managed to put 'Artemus' aside long enough to enjoy himself.
Gwyn and Gareth are somewhat a mystery even to their fellow Elves, since they know so little of their own heritage, but we'll learn more as the story progresses.
Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

I love the idea of the group doing this. Too bad they didn't have time to do it all. Including the children.
Now as for the cloved lemon what an idea! I am sure the reason they did not approach the elves is due to their two elves. They might know it would be a bad thing for the elves and that they take even kissing to a higher level of priorities. Or it could be as the story said. They were too shy ;) LOL
Author's reply
Hi Laer. I think those who were there did a good job of at least showing the Elves the possibilities and that's basically what Dan and Roy were aiming for. Once they get their own group going and perhaps attending events in Fairbanks, they'll get the whole shebang, but for now, this is a good intro.
I suspect it was a shyness, more than anything, that kept the cloved lemon away, since it was Gwyn who warn them about to watch out for it, so he must have assumed that they were fair game. Well, they've seen it in action, so they can institute it in their own events. *grin*
Thanks for reviewing. It's greatly appreciated.

And a good time was had by all! :-D
Hm. So Alex is reluctant to join up, for fear of "losing himself". I do hope he will change his mind, but if he decides to make his "SCA alter ego" abit sketchy, that might be easy to understand. It wouldn't surprise me if it will be mainly the chance to play around with the sharp and pointy things that is the main attractant to the SCA or Alex anyway.
Heh. I've been taking up a new, really old kind of skill myself - I've bought a drop spindle (and roving, of course) and learned how to take my garment making one step closer to the sheep. Spinning the single on the drop spindle isn't hard, nor is plying it afterwards. Getting a thin and consistent thread is harder, though, and will take practice. :-)
A bit of wickedness for you, Fiondil, another take on Medieval feasting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNQ3EEYRnTc
(Horrible Histories is absolutely hilarious, and a potential huge time sink!)
Author's reply
Yes, a good time was had by all. I think eventually Alex will come around. Right now he's being cautious and he's still trying to regroup so he may not jump right in but I suspect that once he sees people fighting with the sharp, pointy things, he'll want to play. *grin* And there are a lot of people in the SCA with "sketchy" personae, not even concentrating on one particular time period but having fun being Roman one day and Tudor the next, so to speak, so maybe Alex will go that route.
I've seen any number of people spinning on a drop spindle in the SCA and elsewhere. Good luck with it. I'm sure once you get used to it, you'll do just fine.

Lovely! I always wanted to know more about the SCA but never took the time to investigate. Had I known that children could be involved I might have tried harder! We ended up interpreting the 1840s instead of the 1480s (or whatever medieval date -- sounds like a wide range!), as it turned out.
I had been wondering about training people in swordfighting for the great battle -- and in this chapter I think I begin to understand.
Author's reply
Hi Lindelea. When I first joined the SCA back in the 80s it was rare to have whole families with kids involved mainly because it seems most groups consisted of college students, but of course, those students get married and they have kids and naturally they include them in their fun. These days, it's very common to see entire families with little ones attending events and such. The SCA has become (rightly) a family affair.
I'm glad this chapter helped you to understand the logic of training people in swordfighting. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

What a wonderful event! As a one-time chatelaine, I can recall getting guests and newcomers outfitted in loaner garb, and finding enough "loaner gear" (plates and such) to go around. We always had too many "small" and "extra-large" items of garb and not nearly enough "mediums" and "large"! And oh, the ubiquitous T-tunics, LOL!
You captured the atmosphere of a small event so perfectly, especially how such unsuitable venues like school gymns or church or community halls can be utterly transformed by tablecloths and candles and dim lighting! It really is amazing how easily that can happen.
I'm eager to see what happens with Wiseman's soon-to-be canton, who joins from among the mortals and who doesn't. I do hope Alex chooses to do so, as it will be so much more fun for Derek if he does. I also look forward to seeing Gareth's visit to Wiseman.

What a delightfully fun feast for all! It was good to see folks who had been so uptight and tense go off their guard and relax and enjoy themselves for a change. I enjoy seeing everyone through Ron's clinical eyes. I believe the surprise was well-received by all and Finrod took it all in stride, even though he was out of his element thrown into such a situation as this.

Hi Ellie. It was nice to see everyone in a relaxed and enjoyable mood, especially given what some of them have had to endure lately and what may be waiting for them when the return to Wiseman. This was something they all needed in order to decompress a bit. A wonderful and long chapter this time. I loved the feast that was put together by the SCA group. The details that you provided in this instance were very interesting to a history buff such as myself. Eating without a fork can be difficult at first and it does need a dexterity to not drop the food on one's lap instead. I love gingerbread and lemon sauce which sounds like a good end to the meal. And I am still chuckling over the cloved lemon. What an ice breaker!
Derek is taking the lead here in deciding to join the SCA group when it gets organized in Wiseman, but I hope that Alex feels able to join at some point. I can see that he is still struggling with what happened to him in EA2 and pretending is probably not something he is going to feel comfortable with for a long time. But the social activities of the SCA would go far in integrating Alex's new persona and helping meet new friends and feeling more like he belonged. Hopefully Ron can get that across to Alex in one of their sessions.
All of the Wiseman elves seem to be on the same page for seeing how this would work. Even going so far as to let the mortals run the SCA and not try to control it for the Dagor Dagorath. In a way, the elves that are in Wiseman could set up the manufacturing of armor and weapons that could meet what is needed by the SCA members and even sell some items on the side to provide a adequate income. I don't think the Sindars and Silvans did much metal work, but if I remember the Noldor did work in metal.
Now for the looonnnnnggggg trip back to Wiseman and if you are true to your story I have a feeling that this is not going to be a quiet ride. There are still migrating animals, blizzards, and asundry events that can happen on the way home.
Have a great weekend!
Author's reply
Hi rikki. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter and all the little details. Cloved lemons are lots of fun and an innocent way to flirt with people.
I think eventually Alex will join the SCA because of Derek, but nothing is guaranteed so we'll just have to wait and see.
We know from the Silmarillion that the Sindar at least had knowledge of metal work and sword making, but I think only with the advent of the Noldor did they bother with it, especially with the war against Morgoth heating up.
And yes, it will be a looonnggg trip back to Wiseman for some. We'll see how that goes in the next chapter.
Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much. Have a great weekend yourself!

I liked this chapter. It sounds from your description the SCA would be a lot of fun, especially if you were a history buff and really into the dressing up and battling with swords and other anarchic weapons like staffs and such. I could see where it could get rather detailed. Traveling around to the different tournaments could be entertaining.
Alex looks like he is really getting into the fighting with the swords. At first he is more concerned with the live steel, but later it is like he can see the whole point of the one on one fighting with swords. Here's hoping he and Derek will be willing to join up when the Wiseman version starts up.
And LOL! on the elves all pointing to the west like pointing seals. Loved the directionally challenged warrior and how everyone reacted. Gwyn's inclusion of the bowing to the west is very elven.
I wanted to go back and read the last 5 or so chapters of this story to bring myself up to date on all the characters you have introduced here. I was trying to place Melisande and couldn't remember her at first. I was wondering why you mentioned her here at the end of this chapter. I am also looking forward to your explanation as to why Gwyn and Garath's parents don't talk about their past. Very mysterious in a way. It would be interesting if it turns out that they actually know some of the Wiseman elves.
Lots of questions still to be answered and well as looking to the trip back to Wiseman. Have a great week and I will be here bright and early on Friday.
Author's reply
Hi rikki. The SCA can be lots of fun and there's always something going on somewhere every weekend, so you could end up doing a lot of traveling. That is certainly true for the royals who basically spend their six months making a Royal Progress through the kingdom, going from one event to another.
Alex, of course, would be a natural. We'll have to see what he and Derek end up doing.
I couldn't resist the "which way is West" bit and acknowledging the Lords of the West would be very elven.
Minor characters that are only mentioned once or twice can be confusing as to who they are when the seem to show up again. As for Gwyn and Gareth's parents, we'll learn more about them eventually when they make their own appearance, though it will be some time (both within the story and for the reader) before that happens.
And the trip back to Wiseman and what follows from that should prove interesting. *grin*

This whole chapter was so much fun! I loved the Elves' reactions to all of this, especially the introduction to Gwyn and Gareth. That "heritage we can never claim" bit is intriguing, but I find their parents' take on bloodlines refreshing too. Can't help but wonder just what is lurking in their history, all the same.
Anastasia's quite the baroness. This group of folks is so interesting with all of their stories and different personalities. I'm surprised the Elves seem a little reluctant to jump onboard with the SCA, it looks like a perfect setup for what they're trying to do, but maybe Glorfindel and Finrod just need some time to think about it first. Looks like Alex, at least, is down for it!
*snort* Elves and their sense of direction. Better than a compass, huh?
I have been kept running from place to place lately, with the holiday and all. Hope you had a good Memorial Day and thanks to any veterans who might be reading this.

Hi Kevana. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. It was a lot of fun. We'll learn something about Gwyn and Gareth's parents later on and why they've been so reluctant to share their history with their sons.
Anastasia is indeed quite the baroness. I think Finrod and Glorfindel not only need time to process all this new information, but for Finrod, he hasn't quite grasped the concept of an international organization, and Glorfindel lived through the medieval period and it doesn't enthrall him, but I think they will see the benefits of the SCA soon enough and get on board.
And I just couldn't resist the whole "which way is west?" thing. I figured it the Elves knew anything, they always knew which way lay the West.

Poor Gwyn! If he had self-confidence issues before, they'd be duplicated after Finrod and Glorfindel's high-handed treatment. At least Glorfindel ought to know better. Elven arrogance really isn't a pleasant thing to watch.
I especially dislike the way they treat Alex and Derek, who aren't the children all Elves seem to think they are. Just because Elves tend to live for millennia, that isn't their doing, simply their nature. It doesn't entitle them to look down their noses either on Mortals or on younger Elves.
Sorry for the rant, but every time I start to believe that they've actually learned that particular lesson, they do their best to prove me wrong.
Author's reply
Hi Soledad. I'm not sure where you're coming from, at least with regards to this chapter. I didn't see much high-handedness in either FInrod or Glorfindel, just natural skepticism as to the worth of the SCA with regards to their mission in Wiseman, but I think the Twins were able to convince them how good an idea it is to have the SCA in Wiseman as a cover for training the troops. And I didn't see either one putting Alex and Derek down here. In fact, they were instrumental in finding the Twins and Serindë and that was acknowledged by the Elves in an earlier chapter. Maybe you're reading too much into it. Personally, I thought everyone was fairly well-behaved here. *grin* At any rate, thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

The "you're late" could not help but remind me of Legolas and Aragorn at Helm's Deep, just a little. Haha!
Bless the Twins, though, I'm sure that was such a relief to see their surrogate father up on his feet again, even if he was still shaky. They probably didn't know if they were going to see him alive again when they left, so I suspect this is not a small moment!
Derek continuously cracks me up, and when Alex gets in on it, there are no survivors. The Elves need to treat those two like Gandalf treated the hobbits - always have one of them around to keep them on their toes.
Hmm, so that migration might be a sign of Other Things Going On? Iiiiinteresting.
Always nice to see the return of the never-whining, nope-not-for-a-second Glorfindel, hehe.
As far as big cities go, I think Finrod would like D.C. - at least until he started meeting the politicians. But he might be all about the architecture and history and museums, etc. I love hanging out in cities but I like my trees and open space, too!
Also - Finrod telling Vorondor the kids might've just decided to skip the ceremony and get right to the wedding - I cracked up. I imagine that put THAT worry to rest, huh, Ron? Or maybe made it worse? LOL! I forgot about that particular part of your Sindarin backstory-writing from previous stories.
Great to see things moving along, wonderful chapter! On to the next one to read and review!

Hi Kevana. Hmph! I hadn't actually thought of that scene when I wrote this, though I did use it in my "Tâd Edhel a Firion" story about Aragorn's first trip to Mirkwood. *grin*
Alex and Derek make a good team, sort of the Pippin and Merry of the group. LOL!
Vorondur did need to be put in his place here and get some perspective on things. All his cool, collect, I'm-the-professional-shrink manner goes right out the window where his daughter is concerned, which just shows that he's no more perfect than the rest of them. And Finrod was the right person to tell him off too. I don't think he would have backed down if it had been Glorfindel or Daeron telling him off.

Well, well, well. I guess Finrod felt very much at home among this bunch of weirdoes - he ust needed to brush off the courtly graces he used every day at his ada's court. And the reactions of Derek and Alex were quite interesting, with Derek wondering if he had somehow fallen down Alice's rabbit hole, but Alex immediately noticing that a lot of people were carrying live steel. And later, he was watching the fighting very intently - with a professioal interest, you might say. It won't surprise me if he will turn out to be one of the founding members of the Wiseman chapter of the SCA.
Heh. I guess anybody who had lived through the real Middle Ages would probably not be interested in a group wanting to recreate that time - when they did not even have indoor plumbing! I haven't missed that it actually took Námo ordering it to get Gwyn and Gareth to join up. And I guess the whole of SCA would sort of have felt like the Leslac version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDe_0mthNBQ
Author's reply
Oh, I don't think these people are weirdoes or part of a cult or whatever, Sunny. Just ordinary people with an interesting hobby. *grin*
And naturally Finrod would feel at home, as we see how easily he falls back into prince-mode. We'll see if either Alex or Derek decide to join the fun. But you're right that those who lived through such times would not be interested in recreating them and Gwyn and Gareth did have to be ordered to join, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered. Even so, it took them a while to figure out just why they had joined and to take it more seriously than they were doing so at first.

Terrific chapter. I am a bit surprised that Finrod, etc did not immediately see the advantages of SCA in connection to their training. It seems an obvious fit and not unrelated to the tournament in Elf Interrupted I. I certainly enjoyed the reactions of mortals and elves to their mass meeting.
I also had a wonderful time catching up on three chapters. Thank you.

Hi UTfrog. I think Finrod, initially, just saw "children" playing dress-up. He might not have made the connection that this was not just a local group of Mortals playing games but an international organization and that very concept would not be something he would have, since it would not have been part of his worldview. Once he understood all the ramifications, I think he realized just what a treasure they had here as we will see in the next chapter. I'm glad you enjoyed catching up with these last few chapters. Well that went very well, see Glorfi not all surprises are bad!
I can understand the misgivings that Glorfi and Finrod have but when they think about it a bit more, I think they will see the advantages of having a SCA group in Wiseman, especially if it is started by those who have no obvious ties to the Elves. It will be one way of training others in sword fighting who are not students of the Academy.
