So wonderful to see these snippets of Legolas's past (and Thranduil). I've always liked "The Elven King" and it is good to see him portrayed with respect.

MikoNoNyte · 2 February 2015 · Chapter 83: New News

As much as I like Olorin (Gandalf), I am finding I really like your Fionwe. He's got just the right amount of sass. :) It's refreshing to see Legolas chose a different life path than the expected Rangers. Too often in Fanfic a writer puts the characters into the same old mold. Boring! This looks to be a good choice for a quick-witted, intelligent Eldar. And: TRIPLETS!!!!!

Laer · 2 February 2015 · Chapter 114: Waiting for Results

Well here is hoping the "elf lover" gets in. They don't need any more hate and discontent. Gwyn and Gareth parents are back with their kind :) Yeah!

Laer · 2 February 2015 · Chapter 113: Election Day

Would that not be a great thing to have been able to not only see but say? ("I have voted for everyone of the presidents. How about you?") I truly would like to know someone who can say that for no other reason than the other history you could learn from them. Yep you got me. I am a history geek. ;)

My heart twisted quite a bit while reading certain lines in this chapter. Concepts in Fiondil's writing often seemed to mirror real-life situations. That seems more true today than ever. I'm glad Peterson got the drubbing at the polls that he deserved, though certainly it was going to go badly for the Elves no matter what, given the mob mentality that plays out here. Hopefully the new mayor is not going to pull his punches in getting this mess sorted out. I'm pretty sure he'd be in the right to declare martial law once he's sworn in, what with masses of people marching around with guns, but hopefully the lesson has stuck this time and there won't be any more of that nonsense. Eonwë's artistry was very "cute" indeed! The dove was a sweet touch. It was so dramatic with Daeron being shot, and with the kings being there - this is probably exactly what Glorfindel was worried about. I loved Finrod Singing. That's always magical to see. I goggled a bit at Findalaurë just lifting the statue and moving it. I'm always surprised when they demonstrate just how strong they are! Thank you very much to whoever posted the obituary. I'd been hoping to find one. It touched my heart that whoever composed it specifically included that he wrote the Elf Academy series. I will certainly look into donating to those causes listed. I've been thinking about life and adventures this weekend, and since I had a day off, I took a trip to a place I'd never been before. I know Fiondil enjoyed the mountains, and I'd never been to one, so I drove a few hours and watched the sunset from a (admittedly small) mountain in a state park. It was freezing cold and absolutely beautiful. He inspired me a lot in life and did so one more time. My thoughts remain with you all. <3 -Kevana

I am glad that Peterson did not win, but that mob mentality was freaky. Seriously, attack whether win or lose, with weapons that wouldn't work against 'demons' in the first place?! Yay for Eonwe and Namo preventing a blood bath. They should set the statue next to Edhellond's entrance or in the middle of the public square as a reminder to everyone of what almost happened. Thank you for continuing this work, and I'll be at the wake in thought.

Well, in the immortal words of Samwise, "That was an eye opener, and no mistake!" What a chapter... I was really hoping for some demonstration of repentance from at least a few of those who had come with foul intent, but they seem to be quite hardened. To me, that's the saddest thing. The Valar and Elves have been quite in the open, and the multiple demonstrations of virtue and power in this short time... Truly, there are none so blind as those who will not see. I love the idea of a Cliff House wake for Fiondil - I'm on my way with chili and buns. The shock/disbelief is giving way to sadness; I'm already feeling a bit down about no Monday morning chapter; didn't realize how much I looked forward to those postings until they are no more. It was truly a day-brightener for so long. Selfish, I know, but there you are. And thanks ever so much to whomever was kind enough to post this chapter today!

obsidianj · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

The election went the way the elves would like, but that doesn't mean everything is well. A mob like this is dangerous no matter what their original motive is. They are not susceptible to any kind of logic or common sense. Even hard facts would not sway them. They made up their minds and that's that. They say they go against demons and then bring guns? They should know as the "bible readers" they pretend to be that guns will not work. I have the feeling someone else is goading them on. Melting the weapons into a figure of Eonwe is "cute", at least it is more decorative than a heap of molten metal. I will join you at the cliff house for a wake for Fiondil and will bring some wine and cake.

Oh--and I'll bring ths Shepherd's Pie and Roast Chicken! As well as a selection of hot chocolate varieties.

Soledad · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

After this election, life in Wiseman will never be again what it used to be, even with the Elves having been present for over two years. Battle lines have been drawn in more than just one level - I'm not sure I'd like to live in a place like this, not anymore. But again, I'm getting old and increasingly fond of my peace and quiet. Off to the Cliff House with freshly baked apple pie to celebrate the life and legacy of the one who has brought us so much joy and delight with his writings. And a big Thank you! to those who continue with said legacy in his absence.

Larner · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

Delightful! I imagine Fiondil is even now complimenting Lord Namo on the comforts of his own accommodations. Love the statue--not a plowshare as much as an archangel's prayer in tangible form.

Sunny · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

*stomps into the Cliff House, burdened with a full backpack and a couple of shopping bags filled to overflowing with bottles of whiskey, wine, soft drinks, snacks, cookies, candies and other eatibles and drinkables, puts the bottles on a side board and starts to fill up available platters with munchies and boxes of kleenex* I've been crying off and on since I got the news, and I'm sure a lot of the rest of you are in the same state. I also think that Fiondil is one person who deserves a proper wake, where we all can drown our sorrows (or just bawl them out) while we all celebrate the life and creativity of our beloved Fiondil. *fills glass with whiskey and raises it in a toast* I also think Eönwë has gotten much better at melting down weapons. Previously, he had only melted them into a lump of slab, but this thime he has created art! (What's the chance of getting a copy for the Cliff House, I wonder?

Any mob, particularly a political mob, is dangerous, after being whipped up by their leader they are leaderless, going blindly to do what they consider is just. I am glad Eonwe and his Warrior Maia were there to protect Glorfindel and his friends, as someone has already mentioned it would have been a blood bath. I hope Dave and the D.A. throw the book at them and make it stick! I hope Dearon recovers quickly, though I think Ron will need a bigger couch at this rate! As for the statue, I have always liked the image of Fionwe in his Finn disguise, in hie jeans and plaid shirt and Eagles Wings, I think it should be set up in the town square to remind people of just how close they came to anarchy. Joins Rikki and Kaylee at the Cliff House with a large dish of lasagna, a big salad and a case of Angry Orchard Cider, lets send Fiondil off in style! Huggs, Lynda

I am so glad people are reviewing this chapter as I enjoy seeing what other people have to say as much as I enjoyed reading Fiondel's writing. And a huge thank you to the admins who are continuing to release this story. I spent the time from reading the last chapter until this one thinking about how Fiondel would have decided the election. I finally decided that Peterson would not win and the elves would not retreat and leave behind the other mortals that had been supporting them. The fact that a mob was coming to attack the elves whether Peterson won or not was sad in fact though it truly repeats what we see in our own world. Having Eonwe and Namo show up prevented a rather large blood bath as I am sure no one would have stepped back from the confrontation and thought about the consequences first. All of the participants from the mob may not change after meeting the Lord of Death, but I am certain that they will gain a hardy respect for the things they have witnessed tonight. That they could also be in trouble for attempted murder may help to keep them in line. Hopefully Darren will recover in time though I think the event will affect him as much as Glorfindel's attack affected him. And yes, that statue was cute! Though you are gone from the circles of this world Fiondel, I hope that you can see the love and respect that you have left behind and how many people you have affected with your writing and sharing your knowledge of Tolkien. I am off to the Cliff House and hope others will be there so we can have a rousing wake in your honor. Hold a spot for me Kaylee and I will bring food and drinks for all.

KathyG · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

[rolls eyes] Don't those people realize that guns are useless against a real demon? If the Elves had been demons, no amount of shooting would have done any good. The weapons that work against the devil and his angels are not the world's weapons but spiritual weapons, and they are described in the Book of Ephesians. Someone needs to refer these people to Ephesians 6:10-18 and 2 Corinthians 10:3-5!

Dreamflower · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

A very intense chapter with a lot of twists and turns. Some of the things I found significant: the mob had clearly decided to attack whether their candidate won or lost; they brought weapons; they consisted of both men and women; and in spite of how well the Elves defended the mob was determined on violence. Only the intervention of the Maiar prevented a total bloodbath. These people weren't thinking straight (mobs seldom do) but I can't help but wonder if they are being influenced by the Other Side? The appearance of Eonwe was dramatic and that of Namo even more so, literally preventing murder. Although attempted murder is still not off the table, especially once Dave Michaelson gets hold of those names. And I do enjoy that even in such a serious situation, we get a chance to appreciate Fiondil's patented humor: "Cute!" I'm glad to see everyone still here, and still contributing. I'm sure it pleases Fiondil as he looks on from his own special vantage point.

Sarah · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

As others seem to have already pointed out, some sections of this chapter seemed a little too fitting, in light of recent events. I am glad that everyone got out okay, though I suspect our most recent arrivals may have found the whole experience of being fired upon...enlightening as to just who/what they are dealing with. I also wanted to take a moment to thank those who made and continue to make this work available to us, and to say that I have never before witnessed such an outpouring of love and support in a fanfiction community as I have here in the past few days as we all grieve this loss. As someone who did not know Fiondil as well as she might have liked, I feel that this speaks volumes for the sort of person he must have been. It also speaks to what a lovely, respectful and supportive group of folks that you all have here at SoA (not an easy thing to achieve in a fanfiction archive, it seems). I sincerely hope that you are all doing well. With love from the Mitten in my little corner of the world.

FV_Whisper · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

Again, I want to express my thanks for continuing posting this series. I think all of us would not have wanted to miss the chapter in the world! After a long build-up of silence before the storm, this was a very intense chapter. Sometimes, Námo can spare a life, and sometimes he will take one unexpectedly. I found this somehow incredibly fitting right now, it gave me goosebumps. This being said, I found Fiondil only rarely killed off his characters, unless this was either cannon or in cannon with his own work. I always delighted in the characters pulling through whatever he put them up agains. Kaylee, I too think the events of turning the weapons into a certain statue (and I always loved the subtle humor given to some of the Maiar) were inspired by a similar event long ago on Tol Eressea. And of course the Cliffhouse we had so much fun in, is in real the Cottage of Lost Play, how could we ever not recognize it. Take care and hugs everyone!

Kitty · 1 February 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

Fiondil, you may not be able to read them any more, but I will continue to review whenever I can, because your work deserves the recognition. I couldn't help but think that the Valar need to hurry up with the satellite connection to Valinor and beyond, so you can read the reviews even from beyond the circles of the world, even if you aren't allowed to answer. The stupidity of these Peterson supporters astounds me. First the attempt to blow up Edhellond, and now they come as an armed mob? And they do think they can get away with it, when too many in the town already know which party is against the Elves? Dave would be on their tracks instantly, wouldn't he? Yay for Eönwë and the Maiar turning up and protecting the Elves! That's a force these fanatics haven't reckoned with, no doubt. Eönwë found a rather creative way to deal with all the weapons. Making a statue of himself is a much better use for the metal and wood :) And now even Námo came! Somehow I think when these Mortals are going to pass on one day, he will have a serious talk with them, and they won't like it one bit. I was rather upset that Daeron was injured, and that seriously! These Mortals are lucky that Finrod and Námo were able to save him, or they'd have a murder on their consciences. I totally like the idea of Eönwë giving Dave their names, so they can be held responsible for what they did. It certainly was more the quick reaction of the Elves than any merit of the Mortals that there was only one Elf hit. Actually, I agree with Námo here. Leave the statue there and put her somewhere where everyone can see it. Not so much to keep Glorfindel in line, but to remind the Mortals that the Elves are under the protection of higher beings. Do these idiots even realise how ironic the whole thing is? They see the Elves as demons, but these demons are now defended by angels of light. Add to that Erunáro healing that man and Eönwë turning the weapons into a statue could easily count as a miracle of the sort the bible would approve of, right? Plus, the way they saved Daeron. If that doesn't show them the truth, I don't know what will, but admittedly, that type of people isn't very open to logic or common sense.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 31 January 2015 · Chapter 115: After the Election

Ai, Atarinya, I can only imagine just how much fun you were having when you wrote this chapter. I know you will never be able to respond to my review in person, but I hope somewhere in Mandos, Lord Námo is keeping you appraised of those of us who love you and your works. I am so glad Peterson is out, though I guess Locke winning doesn't guarantee smooth sailing by far. Thank Eru that Lord Námo and Eönwë were on watch, keeping track of doings amongst the Elves and Mortals. The burning of the weapons into a slag heap (or, in this case, a statue of a certain Herald, rather) calls to mind another attack all the way back on Tol Eressea. I'm sure that's what you were thinking of, even if you can never tell me so for certain. Until and unless Alassiel and Ellie can tell us from your family what's to happen, I'm assuming all we've got is your memorial at the Cliff House (which I suspect is really the Cottage of Lost Play in disguise, quite honestly.) I've hung the walls with Finrod and Glorfindel's sigils together, and Lord Námo's as well as the other Valar. There's a buffet table and I imagine between us we can make it into a feast you would be proud of, as we celebrate your life and your works together. I've petitioned Lord Námo and the other Valar for an eternal Flame to be set in the pleasance (garden) surrounding the Cliff House. Let's hope they will agree to that request. With eternal love and gratitude, your yeldë indonyo, Kaylee Arafinwiel

I too was shocked and saddened to hear of Fiondil's untimely death. Although I never talked to him, I looked forward to his faithful updates every week. It was comfortable to think that I could count on a steady stream of entertaining chapters, especially as the fandom has changed over the years. Fiondil wrote of the Valar in a way nobody else did, making them real, sympathetic characters. He also had a way of taking those Elven characters who were only names in the background and making them real, relate-able beings in our world. These are real gifts of creativity, offered freely to all of us. There are many others who spoke of how he interacted with them, reviewed their stories, helped them with language. To them, and to his family, if they read this, I offer my sympathies on their great loss, which is also a loss to all of us who will miss his contributions to a fandom we love. Thank you Fiondil, and may you rest in peace in the arms of the Father.

For the Family and friends of Fiondil, May Eru shelter you in His arms during this shadow time. I thank you for the gift of Fiondil's work and I thank the All-Father for his incredible wisdom that is expressed so beautifully in his writing. May Iluvatar be with you always.

I, too had a bad feeling when Fiondil failed to update Monday morning and I was relieved when the update notice finally came. But something felt odd. So, I checked the reviews first and I'm sad to hear the news. I didn't know Fiondil personally, but he was a constant in my life for the last years with his story updates that were the beginning of the weekend for me. He never failed to answer my reviews even years after I sent them if, for whatever reason, he missed them the first time around. His stories helped me cope with the constant changes in my life because they were a fixture I could rely on. His stories made me laugh and cry and because of his stories I was able to read the Silmarillion and finish it. My condolences go out to his family and close friends and I thank the group of people that will work to bring us the rest of his written work.

FV_Whisper · 31 January 2015 · Chapter 114: Waiting for Results

Reading so many of the heartwarming reviews, I was reminded of a sung my mother once shared with me (after we've had our share of losing loved ones), which suddenly seemed to fit so much in with the idea's of both love and afterlife Fiondil has shared in his stories. I wondered about translating it (the original tekst is in Dutch) and then, when I looked up the lyrics, the song was the first to appear in the search field. Another one of the the ongoing messages in Fiondil's writings has been that there is no such thing as coincidence, and I took this as a sign I just had to do this: So it will be Now dim the light and close your eyes Forget about the struggle Your life here has passed away too quickly But your love remains But where you will go Sun and moon will be equals The smallest flower Is like the tallest oak And all the kings and children Will be as equals Now let the final dream come forth And don't be afraid anymore After a lifetime Your night of peace has come Where you will go there is no hate nor pain The largest fire Will become just as small as a burning candle The way like the sunshine after the rain So it will be The way like the sunshine after the rain So it will be And where you will go friend and foe Will go together What was dust will turn to dust And there every storm will calm down again So it will be And where you will go I'll let my very heart and soul Go along with you Your task here on earth is finished They way you was in all your love So you will go Translating it, I found myself crying again. 'I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.' Corine
