Always good to see G&G again! *sits down and hatches elaborate conspiracy theories on their parents*
This is as good a time as any to mention my theory on the fate of Elves in the Fiondil-verse.
This has several parts to it, or at least the logic behind it does. The Reborn Elves, despite lingering... well, Reborness- anyway, in some ways they end up much more emotionally adjusted than the Once-Born; they manage to retain their second-childhood innocence in a way that no one does the first time around. I remember, at some points in EI, thinking that the other Elves could use a Reborn-attitude-makeover. Like, "It's a pity more of them don't go through the process". And then I remember that, duh, that's because they would have had to die first. And they're not supposed to do that.
Then there was a part in EI where the Valar were examining various people's DNA during a sort of Reborn slumber party; there were weird genetic discrepancies, and someone (Ulmo? I'll have to go back and check) suggested that this might be the natural next stage of Elf evolution. Which raises the question of when this evolution is supposed to happen, because again, Elves ain't supposed to die while the world's still standing.
Putting those two together, I'm thinking that whatever happens After The End is going to include a process something like what dead Elves go through. Some sort of judgement-therapy, followed by brand-new squeaky-clean innocence.
I have no idea if this is anything near what the author intended, or even if Fiondil's muse has brought up the topic in the first place; I could be wildly off-base. But it seems a reasonable conclusion to me. A reason for those scaredy-Elves to have some estel that it won't end in a big nothing (I mean, if they somehow had access to the text of Elf Interrupted; obviously the general population has no idea of the private conversations of some Valar several Ages ago).
Have a good weekend! I'm learning to cook, so maybe I'll send up a pan of garlic-lemon salmon to the weekly Cliff House party.
Yours, Sasha
Author's reply
Hi Sasha. Interesting enough, one of my betas and I are having a similar discussion about the reason(s) behind the lost of estel among the younger generations of Elves in Aman and what might be done about it to offset it and that, of course, ties in with their ultimate fate and how they view it. Tolkien's only nod to evolution is that, according to him, in the third age of the Elves' existence, the ellyn (male Elves) are capable of growing a beard, yet the only one who is shown doing so is Círdan, though I also have Ingwë bearded. And there is the idea of the Elves eventually fading and that this is supposed to be a natural progression, though the idea of them being bodiless is apparently repugnant to the Elves themselves.
At any rate, I hope to explore this theme a bit more in Elf Academy 4. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. It's much appreciated.

It's as if the Elves in Valinor, the younger generations at least are in mourning for them selves. Why bother, the Dagor Dagorath is coming so why bother to live, really live that is. They need a very firm, swift kick in the butt. Maybe if the older generations started adding to their families again, things would change. Just a thought. It is so sad to see their society stagnating the way is has. The Valier need to start inspiring a few Ellith to want Elflings!
So the brothers Ap-Howel have met Namo/Nate and learned a few truths about them selves and their family. I wonder what their parents reaction will be to the history book. I do like their Mam's reaction to the end of the world is, can you hold off for a while, I just want to read the HEA!
Nice and cool this morning, it is only 70% at 7.38 a.m.!
Huggs,
Lynda
Author's reply
That sounds about right, Lynda, as far as the younger generation of Elves in Valinor are concerned. And it's a situation that does need to be addressed if they hope to succeed in the Dagor Dagorath. It may be foretold that they will prevail against Morgoth, but nothing is absolutely assured.
And the ap Howel brothers met Námo years earlier in Fairbanks, but this is the first time they've met him as Nate. We'll be meeting their parents later in the story when they come for the wedding and you can judge for yourself what kind of people they are.
Thanks for reviewing. Stay cool. Hugs back.

I'm glad to get a glimpse of what's going on in Fairbanks now.
Namo's little talk with the brothers was quite enlightening. So, the idea of children does not inspire the younger Elves of Valinor at all. Not good. Not good at all, and I can see why the Valar are worried.
I'm also wondering about the selective editing of the ap Hywel's family history--who chose those specific details to leave out and why? I hope that we at least find out a little bit about it.
Author's reply
Hi Dreamflower. We'll stick with Fairbanks for another chapter before heading back to Wiseman.
The situation in Valinor isn't good at all but there are forces at work to counter what has happened. The Elves of Valinor need to regain estel if they hope to succeed in the coming war. Right now they are defeated before they've even begun.
As for the selective editing of family history, who can truly say who altered the details or even why. It happened, but luckily, the ap Hywels now have the chance to learn the true story and that's all that matters.
Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

t is obviously weird for Gwyn and Gareth to have other Elves than themselves and their parents around. It seems that they are adapting, though, and maybe there will even be a bit of Romance for one or both of them?
Interesting how bits have fallen out of what history has been told to Gwyn and Gareth (ahd their parents, too, I guess.)
I guess a wedding invitation will be a good reason for Gwyn and Garet's parents to come and meet some other Elves, and I'm certainly looking forwards to your descriptions of it.

Hi Sunny. Thanks for the links. I'll have to look at them over the weekend.
Yes, it has to be weird for Gwyn and Gareth to suddenly have other Elves around, weird and perhaps even a bit uncomfortable. This was a great Friday chapter. We got a smiling Nano, more information on our new brothers, good news from Amroth and more insight into Alex. I really enjoyed all of it. Before Nate showed up, I was thinking Gwin and Garath's families might be Feanoran. I am not sure now, but as Nate said the story was altered for a reason. Sending the book to their parents is a great idea.
Hope you have a fabulous weekend. I am on my way to my annual weekend, off-planet. I am going to ShoreLeave where Richard Dean Anderson is speaking and Leonard Nimoy is supposed to Skype.

Hi UTfrog. I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. The ap Hywel brothers are a mix of Vanyarin, Sindarin and Noldorin bloodlines and they are not related to the Fëanoreans. We'll learn a bit more about them and their parents later in the story.

well here is hoping Alex's nasty temper don't doom him.. Loved the “Because, as Sigmund would say, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Now, good night.” comment. Finlay is turning into an asset. Glad he found the window. kind of ... ;)

Alex is just feeling incredibly frustrated at the moment. Once he calms down, hopefully he'll see that the Elves are really on his side. Finlay is indeed turning into an unexpected by welcomed asset to the Elves and I'm sure Alex appreciates having another agent around. And Vorondur is right about his comment, though perhaps not necessarily in this particular case, but I think he said what he did to calm Alex down and not have him worry so much about things.

"I decided that not having Tolkien write or publish any of his legendarium was the simplest way to go and in this universe, he died in WWI along with his other 2 friends."
Not so simple.
I've been thinking about options authors use when writing modern-day LoTR fics- almost invariably either that Tolkien never wrote LoTR, or that he knew elves/had access to the real Red Book- and it's true that "Tolkien never wrote anything" sidesteps a lot of complications. But Lord of the Rings had such a massive impact on fantasy as we know it- on there *being* a fantasy genre as we know it *(and probably beyond fantasy, in subtler ways)- that pop culture would probably be unrecognizable without JRRT, or an equivalent of him. When I read stories that take place in a LoTR-less universe that otherwise looks exactly like our own, I assume there was a wildly-popular 40's-era writer named Tom Jolkien or something, who wrote a definitive fantasy trilogy called "Some Elves and Dwarves and Long-Lost Heirs And Stuff Go On A Magic Quest". ;)
TL;DR: my headcanon is that your universe still had something similar to the Tolkien phenomena. I hope you don't mind.
Author's reply
Hi Sasha. What you say may be true, that LOTR had a massive impact on present-day fantasy as we know it, but that is not to say that fantasy was not being written prior to LOTR's publication. George MacDonald, David Lindsay, E.R. Eddison were all publishing adult fantasies at a time when Tolkien was still working on his "Gnomish" language. So, feel free to think that something similar to the Tolkien phenomena exists in the Elf Academy universe, but I doubt it does. Fantasy exists, but not necessarily Tolkien-style fantasy. For me that's a cheat. The history of Middle-earth was lost with the ice age and there was no Red Book that survived it. And that's simple enough for me. *grin*

It appears that people are taking turn being offended about the possibility of being manipulated or too protected by someone else, which of course is wasting both time and emotional investment. Time to let the egos go and get together for a change.
Love how Finlay got into the building, and I still wish to know who it is who is directing Farrell. For some reason I imagine him to be similar to FBI Agent Fornel from NCIS, but with a twisted streak.
Author's reply
Hi Larner. Yes, it does seem that way, doesn't it? Letting go of egos is not easy but it certainly needs to be done if any of them hope to survive. Finlay is pretty cool. I've enjoyed writing him. Finlay makes me laugh.
I thought perhaps there'd be a bomb under the car -- they have thought of that possibility, and not merely tracers, haven't they?
The analysis of the concert was still more interesting. I didn't know the story about the pyre -- not completely familiar with the plot of Wagner's operas. Wagner makes me cringe, actually. I can't listen to him with any seriousness. Apologies to any Wagner fans who read this. The only time I really could appreciate Wagner, IRL, was that Buggs Bunny/Elmer Fudd cartoon. Kill the wabbit! Kill the wabbit! I think Buggs was supposed to be Brunhilda?
Going back to my virtual lasagna now. Yum.

Hi Lindelea. Finlay is funny, isn't he? Wagner isn't for everyone, I grant you. I just happen to like his music and have been fortunate enough to have seen 2 of his operas live. And he's very mythic. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Mmm, Italian food. I miss tomatoes...

I want to learn how to lurk in corners. :P
It really is a bit scary to see how off the mark Alex has been lately, not only does Finlay grab him but he wasn't thinking about his cell or his car. Thank goodness for Finlay, that guy is proving just why the Valar wanted him involved. He's pretty cool, not to mention sharp. His words to Alex at the end are sort of harsh, but not too off the mark I think, and Alex seemed to take them better coming from him than I think he would take them coming from any of the Elves. Hopefully Alex will listen. "When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives." (Er, unless your last name is Stark.)
Pity they didn't have enough backup to go out and capture the would-be assassins. Now that's very odd and has me thinking it's not Farrell behind this at all, or else he's recruited - or been recruited by - a much larger force. They already said he prefers seeing his kills face to face, this is about as far from that as you can get.
Curious, too, as UTfrog mentioned that they all up and left. Maybe they knew the jig was up when Alex didn't come out? Hm.
Wondering if someone clued Finlay in on the Valar/Maiar thing or if he decided to ignore those comments as just one more thing about all of this that makes no sense, LOL.
Very impressive story developments, can't wait to see where things go on Friday! Unfortunately it seems I am just not meant to get to the coast or my kayaking tour, rain is in the forecast again for the weekend. Ah well, plenty of summer left to go.

PS: A little something cute to brighten up a Monday morning.

Hi Kevana. Alex has been a bit off and Finlay is a good one to set him straight. Being a former agent himself, Alex is more likely to accept criticism from him than from the Elves.
Actually, there were plenty of Elves to go do in the would-be assassins, but they were spared the trouble it would've caused to take them out.
I'm not sure if anyone's clued Finlay in on the Valar/Maiar thing. I think he's just not interested in pursuing the matter right now.

What in the world are they doing in those woods all this time? Waking trees? Building a tree fort? It must be fun, whatever it is. I guess you can try to take the Elf out of the woods, but...no, no you can't, they'll just go back in them.
It must be really tough to be in a position where you're used to having a lot of control and suddenly feel like your agency is taken away. This is a crash course in humility among other things. I'm glad Alex gets a little dose of reality from Daeron, though, he seems a little bit unhinged around the edges in this and recent chapters.
The dating discussion is really cute. *grin*
Aww, Glorfindel. Still trying to look out for everybody,
That seemed like a win-win - Finlay and Sakari get a night out, Alex and Felicity get their not-date, the Elves keep an eye out for trouble and maybe get to take a swing at Farrell - that was good planning, imo.
Sakari had to have gone along with this knowing the possible danger. She's pretty tough, doing that! Not to mention Felicity. I'm not sure I'd want to go out with a guy knowing somebody might have a sniper rifle trained on his head while we're enjoying our breadsticks. I suppose that might be attractive for some, though! :P I really like Sakari and Felicity so far, I'm glad you introduced them as characters.
Pffft, the musical selections! Even if that was just coincidence, it made me laugh. I loved your meta comparisons between the music and the Silm stuff, I can totally see it.
Wonderful chapter. On to the next one!
-Kevana
Author's reply
Hi Kevana. Yeah, I wonder a lot about that too. I'm with Alex on it: those dudes are definitely insane. LOL!
Alex has been going it alone for so long and being always in control of whatever situation he finds himself that he's having a hard time dealing with the Elves interfering (as he sees it).
Sakari and Felicity are both strong women, each in their own ways, and they are good foils for Finlay and Alex, respectively. I've been enjoying writing them both.
Wagner is very suggestive of great mythic motifs and his music fits in well with Tolkien's legendarium, I think.
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. Thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate it very much.

I'm beginning to like Finlay more and more--he slipped back to check on Alex, and watch his back. His sense of humor is a little on the snarky side, but it's interesting to see a mortal who knew Alex from "before" and is not an enemy. We get to see some parts now of Alex's backstory that perhaps he never even thought about himself. It's good to get someone else's perspective on his personality as it was. And it seems as though his Meriwether personality has not been completely engulfed by his Grant personality--in spite of his insistence on being "Alex Grant". It is probably an accurate observation, since Finlay was more of an acquaintance at the time than a friend.
Vorondur is right about the "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" part--but the significance seemingly is not for the characters, but for your readers. "Brunnhilde becomes Mortal afterwards, right? And she’s the one who deliberately rides her horse into Siegfried’s funeral pyre with that ring everyone was all hot after, thereby cleansing it of its curse." (BTW, I can never think of Wagner without hearing Anna Russell's voice in my head: "And she's still his aunt!")
Not only is there a correlation to Luthien, but also to Frodo. No coincidence, since JRRT was steeped in the Northern myths, and made use of them freely.
I know that in the Elf Academy universe, you made the artistic decision that Tolkien never wrote and published any of his work focused on Middle-earth. I believe that was a good decision, since such knowledge would unnecessarily complicate things and completely alter the plot.
But I do hope that at some point in time, Alex begins to learn of the significant efforts played by mortals such as his ancestor Aragorn. I think right now part of his irritation with things is the feeling that mortals are somehow lesser beings than the Elves who now surround him. He likes them as individuals, they are his friends, but as a group he tends to resent them.
He has yet to learn "the rest of the story".
Author's reply
Hi Dreamflower. Finlay is a stand-up kind of guy, the sort you want watching your back. Being about a decade older than Alex, he's a bit more mature and able to take things as they are more easily (unless its Elves and angels *grin*). And he's not impressed with Alex so he doesn't take his guff.
Vorondur is quite right, but any significance can be inferred from Wagner with respect to this story or Tolkien in general.
I decided that not having Tolkien write or publish any of his legendarium was the simplest way to go and in this universe, he died in WWI along with his other 2 friends.
You're right, though, that the Elves do need to sit down with Alex and tell him the "rest of the story", especially about his Dúnedain ancestry. They just need to find the time to do so. Maybe after the wedding when things calm down a bit.
Yeah, right. *grin*

Hm, well that explains way Glorfi was there and all the others, but just why did Ratty's Crowd pull out? Did some one have second thoughts or was this a dry run/recon mission, or was it even Ratty's Crowd? There have to be other players in this Game, just who are they?
I can understand Alex' anger, he can't seem to turn around with out tripping over an Elf, they seem to be every where he is. I know why they are doing it, but it has to be irksome! I kind of wish we could get Ratty sorted, then things would get back to normal, well as normal as things can be around Elves, don't forget we have a wedding to organize and a nervous Bride and Bridegroom to calm !

Wow, a lot happened here in this chapter on a different level than just the story with information we the readers have been aware of and lots of new details that we have not seen before. You moved the action up another notch here.
Stealth elves, unless you happened to bump into them you would not know they are there. I wonder if they would show up if under a heat scan. Then Ed shows up and proves even the elves can be surprised. I wonder if Alex was on his game if the elves would be working harder to keep up with him.
Significant information about Farrell in this chapter. He has help and it includes the agency where Ed and Alex worked. They have technology that can listen in on cell phones and can use tracers and other things that the elves might not have found. Alex, Ed and the elves are going to have to identify these agents or they will never know if one is standing beside them in some place or not.
Bold move on Farrell's part. He has proven that he can pin Alex down in a location the second time and that he can be gone before the elves can activate. The van next to Alex's car is important I think.
Now Alex needs to make some very important decisions and apologize to some people. Even though he has always been a lone wolf, as Ed points out, Alex is no longer a big fish in a small pond. If he is going to be part of this game to prepare for the coming war then he is going to have to make significant changes to his life style. Without overdoing it you have shown this evolution Alex is making from being alone after Amroth left to being dragged kicking and screaming into a big family. Love this chapter!

Hi rikki. Yes, quite a bit is happening in this chapter, and yes, even Elves can be surprised. Alex does need to make important decisions and do some apologizing. Finlay is very correct about his attitude and it's hard to realize that you're no longer king of the mountain. I think it'll take Alex a little time to come to that realization and deal with it.
