Larner · 13 May 2013 · Chapter 23: On the Giving of Wedding Gifts

I find I quite like young Rory--definitely the child the Rory I love to portray must have been. And Chop certainly is related to my version of Frodo! Now, how will they get him? Am growing increasingly curious!

Author's reply

*grin* I do love young Rory, who is quite rambunctious and precocious! You will soon find out...

shirebound · 13 May 2013 · Chapter 23: On the Giving of Wedding Gifts

Oh dear, Chop is in for... something! It was lovely of the bride-to-be to compliment Belladonna like that. It brings a craft-person such joy (as you know) when their hard work is appreciated, and even seen as unique special.

Author's reply

Well, it certainly rather won young Bilbo over--he would have been very upset if the bride had not appreciated his mother! Thankfully Chop will NOT be in for some things (like having his bed short-sheeted on his wedding night, LOL!) I think Bilbo and Siggy will come up with something clever!

Andrea · 12 May 2013 · Chapter 22: Afternoon at the Great Smials

A very nice afternoon so far. Maybe Chop will wish it back very soon - after the prank! For I'm quite sure that Bilbo and Siggy will come up with a grand one. Despite their indignation about Chop's mature behavior Bilbo's and Siggy's reactions to lasses show that they, too, are interested ;-)

Larner · 6 May 2013 · Chapter 22: Afternoon at the Great Smials

Hmm! Now that is a most interesting dilemma, to think on what needs to be a wonderful prank! I just hope it doesn't go too far. Loved seeing "Red Rover" being played!

Author's reply

You recognized the game, naturally! Years ago in a little ficlet I wrote, I had young hobbits playing "Breakthrough" (AKA Red Rover) because it just seemed like it would be a very hobbity sort of game! As for the prank, well, we shall see!

Lindelea · 6 May 2013 · Chapter 22: Afternoon at the Great Smials

p.s. *Now* I know why I haven't been reading in this story (looked at the chapter titles). I am still hoping sometime (maybe this summer?) to have time to go back and finish my Fell Winter story, and so it's better to avoid your Fell Winter chapters for the time being.

Author's reply

Yes! I hope you will finish it--I love that one! But you can keep on with this one going forward now, I hope!

Lindelea · 6 May 2013 · Chapter 22: Afternoon at the Great Smials

How lovely to see this pop up in my email. I must have missed a number of intervening chapters, however... I didn't have time to go back and catch up, but will hope I can manage to do that later. Such a hobbity and homely chapter! (The food, especially, sounds good. I just realized I haven't eaten since early this morning...) (There are two paragraphs repeated, at least the way my browser is showing the chapter, so you might want to take another look.) I love the nicknames! (And why do I have the feeling that a planned prank is somehow going to go wrong?)

Author's reply

Glad you enjoyed it! Food is important! I fixed the doubled paragraphs. That was a copy/paste error--I grabbed the same part twice, without realizing it. We'll see what happens with the prank...

shirebound · 6 May 2013 · Chapter 22: Afternoon at the Great Smials

"What's the matter with Chop? What's that lass done to him?" Oh dear, it's quite a shock when a playmate grows up right in front of your eyes. It's such a pleasure to see the hobbits feasting and laughing again. And it's such a pleasure to know that you're writing again. (You have two paragraphs that repeat, beginning with "Bilbo was pleased to see both his parents there".)

Author's reply

Exactly! Siggy and Bilbo are not quite ready to let go of the "old" Chop yet! I thought a chapter of fun and frolic would be good, and show how the Shire has recovered for the most part. (Thanks! Fixed now!)

Larner · 24 January 2013 · Chapter 21: You Are Cordially Invited

Ah, how I remember having to take the second bath after Big Bro when we were kids, before we finally got a larger hot water heater. At least there was no baby to be lost in the silt! Heh! Love the details of the trip, and the way that Belladonna makes Jack welcome as part of the family.

Author's reply

And of course, it was even more so back when the water had to be heated elsewhere and brought in with pails! Since this was the family's first "vacation" in a few years, I thought it deserved a few details. And of course, Belladonna would be sure to take good care of young Jackdaw!

Andrea · 23 January 2013 · Chapter 21: You Are Cordially Invited

Great, a trip to Great Smials! Like shirebound I think that this will do them all good. Bilbo enjoys the trip very much, it seems as does the Twofoot lad. Last but not least: There's plenty of FOOD again :-) What a relief, especially for a hobbit.

Author's reply

Yes, he's having a marvelous time! It's been a while since he's been anywhere except Bag End and Hobbiton. And Jack is only a little bit older than he is, so they can enjoy themselves! The Shire is once again a land of plenty. But those who endured that bad winter will never forget it.

shirebound · 23 January 2013 · Chapter 21: You Are Cordially Invited

What fun to experience hobbits playing their riddle game. This is such a needed outing for Bilbo, as well as his parents. What a lovely family.

Author's reply

*grin* It seems to me that to be so good at riddles, Bilbo must have played them a lot! Yes, it was about time the family got out of their hole for a while. The Fell Winter was so hard on them; but they'll have fun at Adalgrim's wedding!

Andrea · 7 December 2012 · Chapter 20: Deep Roots Are Not Reached By the Frost

I'm glad that spring has arrived at last and that Bilbo and his mother will be able to visit Great Smials. That's what hobbits like: to be together with family and have a good time. I hope, Bungo will get at least part of his former strength back so that he can come with them next time. Lalia is her name? Oh dear ...

Author's reply

Yes, her name is Lalia, and she's young yet...

Antane · 7 December 2012 · Chapter 20: Deep Roots Are Not Reached By the Frost

So glad things are looking up at last! :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

So am I!

Antane · 6 December 2012 · Chapter 19: When Winter Comes Without a Spring

It was bad enough that the old bookcases had to go but the thought of book themselves! :( Glad that the 'cavalry' came in time to stop that. What an interesting gap-filler you are presenting here! :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Yes. I made *myself* shudder when I wrote that part. But it could have come to that!

Antane · 6 December 2012 · Chapter 17: Beware the Wolf in Darkness Born, part 2

Sorry that I've gotten so far behind here. What an dramatic chapter! It could well have been this way. Cute about adventures making you late for supper and fool of a Took. :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Well, it had to be dramatic, considering the subject matter! Starving wolves in the Shire were a pretty dire situation! I think some of the sayings we see in LotR are old sayings around the Shire!

eiluj · 4 December 2012 · Chapter 20: Deep Roots Are Not Reached By the Frost

Well, things are looking better -- other than the prospect of seeing Lalia, though I suppose Siggy and Chop are a trade-off. And the veggies will be early!

Author's reply

Well, they don't really know Lalia yet (although we do), but Bilbo will be thrilled to see his cousins!

Larner · 4 December 2012 · Chapter 20: Deep Roots Are Not Reached By the Frost

No, they can't know yet just how that Lalia might turn out, of course. Am glad that Bilbo and his mother will be going to see the family, at least.

Author's reply

No, they don't know. But we do.

shirebound · 3 December 2012 · Chapter 20: Deep Roots Are Not Reached By the Frost

What a wonderful story. I'm so relieved that it's spring, and that the crops are coming in and the fish are biting and there's laughter and cheer once again in our beloved Shire.

Author's reply

Yes, the Shire at last is beginning to go back to normal! Of course there are a lot of things that will never be the same.

Larner · 28 November 2012 · Chapter 19: When Winter Comes Without a Spring

Hooray! Just perhaps there MIGHT be spring coming at last in spite of the near loss of hope! And I'm also glad the byre fell over when it did--it was a falling over that was blest, I suspect. And I find myself rejoicing they got their fish, too.

Author's reply

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I am only just now finding these reviews--my notifications are not showing up! You are right: spring's on the way. And the byre and the fish were indeed very much needed blessings!

Andrea · 26 November 2012 · Chapter 19: When Winter Comes Without a Spring

Perfect title once again! So many of Bilbo's older relatives died. That is really sad. But then farmer Button arrives and shows that hobbits look after each other, even if they belong to different classes! Hobbits are wonderful :-) Secondly, the ice fishing was also a splendid idea and it helped rise the spirits. But what really must have made Bilbo's day "were the first tiny blooms of snowdrops". Spring is coming!

Author's reply

Yes, and an examination of the Baggins Family Tree shows that they really did. And I am sure that went for many other families who were not so well documented. Hobbits are wonderful :-) Yes, they are! The fishing helped put food on several tables, so it really did raise spirits--and you are right about the snowdrops.

shirebound · 26 November 2012 · Chapter 19: When Winter Comes Without a Spring

I'm as relieved as Bilbo to see a hint of Spring! This just warmed my heart... The Master o' the Hill has allus taken care of everybody else. 'T is the least we can do to return the favour.

Author's reply

Yes, hobbits do take care of their own.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 26 November 2012 · Chapter 19: When Winter Comes Without a Spring

Oh, oh, *oh...* *shivers* So much death :( *huggles up Bilbo-lad and stokes the fire for the Bagginses* I wish I could have been there to help. I don't know that I could do much, but if only I could have shared food and blankets with them. What an awful winter this has been for them, in contrast to the autumn here which has only just now "begun to bite". November is nearly over, and only now have the rain and chill begun to set in, here in the South Bay. It makes me think of those on the East Coast, and the heavy snowfalls that have swept in there while I've been warm and comfortable - maybe too comfortable. This makes me worry for not only the Shire, but my Eastern friends and their families, anyone and everyone touched by the torrents of rain and snow. I do hope all is clearing up there, and that as few lives as possible were lost. :( I've been extremely remiss in reviewing lately, and I'm sorry for that - this is one of those tales that grips me and is leaving me too breathless to review until I find a place to pause and let it come at me all at once, if that makes sense. Now that hope is once again on the horizon, this is one of those places. The bleakness is, hopefully, coming to a close and Spring is on the way. As for us here in the San Francisco Bay region, I do not know what winter will bring...though I don't expect much in the way of snow down in the Valley. I might be surprised - it *has* snowed here before, once or twice. But even if snow falls, I doubt it'll hang around as it has in the Shire. How is the weather by you, Dreamflower? I hope it's not inspiring the dreadful winter that has gripped the Shire by the throat...hope you and yours had a peaceful and joyful Thanksgiving and that you will all stay well through the remainder of the holiday season, and onward. Your friend, Kaylee

Author's reply

I am so sorry to be so late in replying to you! I only recently realized that I have not been getting notified for reviews for some time now! Overall, we had a relatively mild winter so far. We actually need some rain and snow, as our part of the country is in drought condition, but so far the rain and snow have either passed us by, or has been very mild. The Fell Winter was such a horrible event, one that like the Long Winter of a couple of generations earlier, received its place in Shire history! I hope y'all are still doing okay!

Larner · 16 November 2012 · Chapter 18: The Wood Was Burning Fast, and the Snow Still Fell

A terrible loss! Poor Bungo!

Author's reply

Yes, poor Bungo.

Andrea · 15 November 2012 · Chapter 18: The Wood Was Burning Fast, and the Snow Still Fell

Oh dear! That is a sad turn of events! I hope that Bilbo's father will recover from his shock. Or was it a stroke? Of one fact we can be certain, though: Even this winter will end one day! I hope that day will come soon.

Author's reply

It is sad. Bungo had a mild heart attack, but he will recover somewhat...

Andrea · 14 November 2012 · Chapter 17: Beware the Wolf in Darkness Born, part 2

Good old Gandalf! He's always there at the right time! Chop should not underestimate his own strength, though. I think that even without Gandalf the hobbits would have succeeded in driving the wolves out of the Shire. But some of them would have died! Adventures are nasty things that make you late for supper! That sounds familiar :-)

Author's reply

Oh my! I am finding a whole lot of reviews I didn't know about! I haven't been getting notifications lately, but I did not realize it went this far back! Yes, I think that they would have as well--but you are right, it would have cost hobbit lives! Which is why I sent Gandalf to the rescue! *grin* Well, Bilbo could have been quoting someone...

Larner · 30 October 2012 · Chapter 17: Beware the Wolf in Darkness Born, part 2

Hooray! What a defense the Hobbits put up! Alas for the wounded, but it could have been SO much worse without Adalgrim's family coming together, and without Gandalf's help! And love that line of Bilbo's possibly having come from Paladin's father.

Author's reply

Yes, without the Tooks, and especially without Gandalf, the Shire would have been in a terrible fix! I was writing that little bit at the end, and that bit of dialogue just seemed to fit right in there. I wonder if it might have originated with Uncle 'Gar, who would have had his own opinion on Adventures? It could have become a family saying.
