Very clever Trotter, (and Dreamflower!)

Andrea · 8 March 2011 · Chapter 4: Strategy

*Grins with Trotter* The strategy worked out!

Author's reply

It did, didn't it? *grins back*

Antane · 4 March 2011 · Chapter 4: Strategy

That was sneaky! But can't blame him for wanting to be homeschooled. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Well, in my version of M-e, that's what hobbits do. They are always homeschooled, first by parents and older sibs, and later if necessary they are tutored by older cousins or uncles. But among Men, those who live in literate societies at any rate, there are schools.

Larner · 23 February 2011 · Chapter 3: A Brother's Heart

Glad to read this again. Yes, I find I really like seeing Hildifons's family and their reactions to his having gone missing. I do feel for their grief, and Isembold's sadness that his beloved brother wouldn't be there for his wedding.

Author's reply

So often we only get one side of the story when someone is gone-- I thought it only fair to get a brief glimpse of the home-folks Hildifons left behind.

Baggins Babe · 19 February 2011 · Chapter 2: Trotter's Triumph

Ah! I love competent capable hobbits! Trotter certainly dealt with those thieves - and tied them up so well. And he managed to retrieve those mushrooms! Hildifons has those Rangers wrapped round his little finger!

Author's reply

I'm very fond of capable competent hobbits. And I love it when a hobbit turns the table on the Big Folks. Of course he retrieved the mushrooms-- a hobbit always keeps his priorities straight! *grin* Not hard to do for a Took!

Baggins Babe · 19 February 2011 · Chapter 1: Friends in Need

Glad to see that Hildifons is helping to alter hobbits' views on the Rangers - and Archer only needed to smile to help in that regard. Those sausage-filled apples sound delicious!

Author's reply

Well, not only the smile, but also the way he helped! They are quite delicious! I usually serve them with a baked sweet potato and a green salad and some homemade rye bread.

Baggins Babe · 19 February 2011 · Chapter 3: A Brother's Heart

How on earth did I miss these? Life has been so chaotic and busy recently. How terrible for Hildifons' brothers to think he may have fallen into the bog - and yet that Tookish sense tells Isembold that his brother is out there somewhere. And he did get to meet his true love while he was searching! Off to read the rest and catch up!

Author's reply

I'm glad you found them now! I understand about RL; it has a nasty way of interfering with things like reading about hobbits, LOL! Yes, there's more than a little irony in the situation. Of course, in my story, Gerontius does eventually find out his son's fate many years later, but it's not common knowledge. And a "hearts and flowers" story just has to have a little bit of romance in it!

Andrea · 17 February 2011 · Chapter 3: A Brother's Heart

But every now and then a strangely un-hobbity thought came to him, that Hildifons was somewhere in the Outlands, out in the Wide World, alive and well. If that could be true of any of his brothers, it could be true of Hildifons. If he only had known how right he was! It must have been terrible for the two brothers and their father to live with the uncertainty that Hildifons might have found his death in the bog. On the other hand, if Isembold hadn't searched for his lost brother, he would never have met Miss Violet Puddifoot.

Author's reply

Yes it must have been awful. I don't think Hildifons ever truly realized how much he'd be missed and grieved for. And you are quite right! Aside from the notion that a "hearts and flowers" challenge should have a little romance in it, even if only in passing, I also wanted a bit of irony: that the tragedy of losing his brother led to his finding his true love.

Larner · 11 August 2010 · Chapter 2: Trotter's Triumph

Ah! How I truly love a capable Hobbit! And there's no question our Trotter is as capable as they come!

Author's reply

He is quite capable! And of course, I love showing hobbits showing up Men, LOL!

Antane · 10 August 2010 · Chapter 2: Trotter's Triumph

Two triumphs too! Now not only animals have to be wary of hobbits and stones but men also and even better finding those mushrooms... :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Yep. A hobbit with a stone is not to be trifled with!

Andrea · 9 August 2010 · Chapter 2: Trotter's Triumph

But Trotter had something else on his mind. He went over to where he had emptied the bags, and sighed with relief. His bounty was undisturbed. Hobbits! When it comes to mushrooms they forget everything else! I very much enjoyed how Trotter proved to be as good a ranger as the men. And what's even better, he used hobbit techniques to capture the ruffians. Very well done, Trotter :-) P.S.: I've never heard the expression "treed" before. Does it mean trapped on a tree?

Author's reply

To answer your question first: yes, that's exactly what it means, usually used when dogs are hunting, and trap their prey up a tree-- most often in this country when hunting racoons or possums. I'm glad you enjoyed Trotter's obssession with the mushrooms! I had fun with that. And I also liked the idea that he was using hobbity means to his end!

walkerskye · 24 May 2010 · Chapter 1: Friends in Need

my grin about split my face to see another Trotter story! and a recipe to boot! That one I've gotta try, made my mouth water. I look forward to the rest of the tale as it grows. and more recipes, I hope....

Author's reply

Yes, I've always intended to show more of Trotter's adventures than what appeared in his journal, so it was fun to start this! I love recipe fics! I'm sure that as much as Trotter likes cooking, some more of them will be recipe fics! It's always good to hear from you!

Larner · 23 May 2010 · Chapter 1: Friends in Need

Excellent! Indeed these proved true friends to the old lady and her family. Glad Jon will recover relatively quickly, and that they now have help. And the apples sound yummy!

Author's reply

Yes, they are true friends-- I think once a hobbit has decided you are a friend, you'll be one ever after! Now that he's assured things won't fall apart while he's laid up, I think he will be able to get the rest he needs to recover. The apples are indeed yummy! They make an excellent entree-- the last time I made them, I used maple-flavored breakfast sausage to make the stuffing, and served them with homemade rye bread, vegetable soup, and salad made with lettuce straight from the garden.

Soledad · 21 May 2010 · Chapter 1: Friends in Need

Yay! Trotter is back! You know, I'll envy you for the rest of my life for having found such an excellent way to re-introduce him to the Ardaverse.

Author's reply

*grin* Thank you! Yes, he's back. I always intended to tell a few more tales about him. As I said when I wrote the first story, I'd always been fascinated by the idea of a "Ranger hobbit", so it was just a matter of finding a convenient person on the Family Tree! Hildifons filled the bill perfectly!

Antane · 21 May 2010 · Chapter 1: Friends in Need

A sweet story, glad at least a few people know now the Rangers are good people, and it was nice to see Trotter again. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

I always like to think there was a handful of people who were able to see past the gossip and suspicion to the true nature of the Rangers!

Andrea · 21 May 2010 · Chapter 1: Friends in Need

She turned a gimlet eye on Archer, who smiled at her. His smile quite transformed his dour face, and she responded in kind. Somehow this reminds me of Strider ;-) It seems that not only the common folk was wary of the rangers. It also worked the other way around. They always kept some distance to each other. It needed a ranger-HOBBIT to change things - and cook a fine meal :-)

Author's reply

Yes, I think that it did need a hobbit. Not merely a hobbit, but a Took with a full share of the Tookish charm and friendliness. Trotter would see no reason why his friend Mistress Polly and her family should not also be friends with his friends the Rangers, and his postitive attitude would be infectious! And of course Trotter would love to cook a fine meal whenever he'd get the chance!

Grey Wonderer · 21 May 2010 · Chapter 1: Friends in Need

I really enjoyed this. I started to read it over at the ShireKitchen site but decided to read here instead. I really needed to read something happy just now and this fit the bill. I like how the opinion of the Rangers that Miss Polly had was changed by their visit. I enjoyed the way Trotter and Archer set about helping Miss Polly with everything. Lovely story. Good to see Trotter again.

Author's reply

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and that it took you to a happy place! ((hugs)) I think that from time to time some of the folks they helped got a chance to see the "true" Rangers shine through. I'd always intended to come back to Trotter-- lots of things happened to him that didn't get into the original story!

eiluj · 20 May 2010 · Chapter 1: Friends in Need

Good to see more of Trotter -- and to see the Rangers get a bit of respect. And the recipe sounds yummy.

Author's reply

I'm glad you liked seeing Trotter again-- and where Trotter goes, he'll see that the Rangers get respect. The recipe is quite good; I've made it a few times. Sometimes I use homemade sausage made from fresh ground pork or turkey and fresh herbs, but the last time I made it using maple-flavored breakfast sausage. Yummy!
