Celeth · 22 April 2013 · Chapter 3: A Daring Plan
I laughed myself silly over this story, especially over the conversation of Bilbo as Orome with Thranduil. Poor Thranduil, and all the elves. But it serves them right for imprisoning the hungry dwarves I think. And I loved the way Bilbo comes across here, so very down-to-earth (thanks also for the side stories - loved them too). I wonder how Bilbo is going to explain everything to Lord Orome when he gets to Aman with Frodo. I bet the Valar were all rolling with laughter on the floors of Ilmarin, holding their splitting sides!!! Thanks for the story. I really loved it.
Author's reply
Hello Celeth, I've said this on the other review I left, but I'll put it here too in case you've not read that reply yet: I'm sorry I haven't replied earlier. I'm not getting notifications from SoA when I have a new review, so unless it's for a recent story I've posted (which I'll check on once or twice for a day or two afterwards), I completely miss reviews for older fics onsite. Back to 'Hobbit Stew', now. I'm thrilled to bits you liked this so much! It was my first (and remains my only) 'Hobbit' fic, to date, so it was a bit of a gamble. Being more familiar with the Famous Four (hobbits), I wasn't sure I was going to manage to pull off Bilbo very well, because there was no hobbit back-up in his case. He was a hobbit alone with 13 dwarves (and they weren't even in this fic, other than as references)! Thankfully, it worked out better than I thought it would. Bilbo has a depth of character I never really saw before, he's more complex than I gave him credit for, and so 'Hobbit Stew' was an apology to him, of sorts, for my underestimation of his adventure. It was also an excuse to pit Baggins' inventiveness against elvish wisdom and see which came out the better. I think it's safe to say: Baggins - 1, Elves - 0. *grins* What a great thought, imagining the Valar have a good old belly laugh at this incident. Hope they did, actually, because if they don't have a sense of humour, Bilbo's stuffed ... Thanks for R & R-ing, M ;)
Larner · 10 September 2011 · Chapter 3: A Daring Plan
Aha! A perfect, Hobbitish sort of resolution, and may the Hobbit truly enjoy his dearly bought meal! And may Thranduil, Legolas, and company manage to get that white stag they are after! And at least the Necromancer did manage to be vanquished for a bit in the wake of this visit! Heh! A truly delightful tale, and well done! (And the Entish is perfect!)
Author's reply
Hello Larner, yeah the Necromancer was vanquished - and within the hundred year time limit stated in the prophecy, too. Perhaps Bilbo's little deception was fated after all ... Thanks for R & R-ing, M ;)
BeeGee · 23 August 2011 · Chapter 3: A Daring Plan
You have captured Bilbo's character very well here! This was so funny, I had to LOL in a few places. Thranduil, Legolas, and the rest came across very true to canon. I was half afraid Bilbo was going to blow that horn, but he had a better plan. I've seen pics online on several Hobbit blogs of the dwarves and Bilbo. I've seen Martin Freeman in "Sherlock" and to me he looks like Bilbo even without makeup. I mean that in a good way. I hope you will continue to write more hobbit fics!
Author's reply
Hello BeeGee, firstly, let me apologise for the shocking delay in responding to your review - I did mena to much earlier, but then real life took over & I completely forgot. *grovels* I am delighted that you enjoyed the characterisations so much. This is my first 'Hobbit' fic, and the characters were not all too familiar too e, but it's a relief to know I didn't spoil them for you or my other readers! You needn't have worried about Bilbo blowing the horn; as talkative as he can be, even his mouth isn't that big! I've seen the dwarven stills online too. Smme of them are surprisingly attractive, and there are several types of dwarf therein ... I'm not entirely sure how I feel about that yet. Throw in the OC elf maiden and, well, I'll have to reserve judgement until the films are released. Gloin is the spitting image of Gimli though, which is brilliant. And yes, Martin Freeman does look good as Bilbo. Actually, he reminds me a lot of Billy Boyd's Pippin. Must be the Tookish blood they share ... Thanks for R & R-ing, Kara's Aunty ;)
Antane · 20 August 2011 · Chapter 3: A Daring Plan
My dear cousin! What a wonderful ending to this tale, love it, love it, love it - all of it. Would have LOL in parts but had to restrain myself since I reading this at the library. Too cute! (And le hannon for the kitty pics too, how fitting Sam and Rosie were so close). Prayed that would have time to do another chapter of the crossover so you could do you-know-what. :) *hugs* Namarie, God bless, Your ever hopeful bloom and berry :)
Author's reply
Hello m'dear! how lovely that you read the final chapter (given the huge gap between that and the last one). I'm relieved and glad that you enjoyed it. I'm working on the next xhapter of my crossover, so once that's done, I'll get another of you-know-what up for you ... *grin* Thanks for R & R-ing, Tooky bloom! Cousin McMo.
bookworm · 18 August 2011 · Chapter 3: A Daring Plan
And then one day, Bilbo arrives on the shores of Aman, and one Lord Orome is there to have Words with him XD Am so glad you finished it, and really enjoyed the last section!
Author's reply
Hello bookworm, oh, the thought of Oromë waiting on the shores of Aman to confront an unsuspecting Bilbo made me laugh myself silly. I think there's a sequel in there somewhere ... I'm really glad you enjoyed the final chapter of Hobbit Stew, Honestly, I thought I was never going to get it finished because of this stupid writer's block, but I had a good day yesterday, so, thank Eru for that! And thank you for R & R-ing, Kara's Aunty ;)
shirebound · 17 August 2011 · Chapter 3: A Daring Plan
O most clever and ingenius hobbit! A dinner was never so daringly earned as this one. What a delightful tale.
Author's reply
Hello shirebound, Bilbo is a terribly clever hobbit, isn't he? Not sure if I would've dared impersonate a Vala, though I suppose that would have depended on how hungry I was in the same situation ... Btw, have you seen the new photographs for the young Bilbo and all the dwarves on tuckborough.net? One or two of those dwarves are ... well, dishy ... Am now having some rather impure thoughts about Thorin and Kili, which somehow feels wrong. Methinks I must be a bonafide pervy dwarf fancier ... It's also astonishing how much the actor they've found to play Gloin (Peter Hambleton) looks like his screen son Gimli when in his dwarf make-up! Thanks for R & R-ing, M ;)
Antane · 10 June 2010 · Chapter 2: Horn o' plenty
Finally getting to this, my dear cousin and apologies for it taking so long. Won't say much here because I will be nominating it and you can't repeat your praise there that is here so... If I recall correctly on the books on the movie said Legolas was near to 3000 at the time of the War of the Ring. Namarie, God bless, your bloom and berry :)
Author's reply
Hello, m'dear! 3,000, eh? Where did you find that? *peers across the pond eagerly* I couldn't find any indication of his age anywhere :( Oh, well. Too late to change it now, given I've made him 1,000, and it's now an intrinsic part of the story *sniffle* I was just about to rush off an e-mail to you to let you know that Dreamflower's already nominated 'Hobbit Stew' (bless her) and I didn't want you to lose your nomination - but I checked my MEFA account and see I am already too late. So sorry, m'dear. But I thank you most heartily. You are better to me than I deserve, methinks. Thank you for R & R-ing, my little Took bloom, Cousin Mac :o)
Andrea · 7 June 2010 · Chapter 2: Horn o' plenty
Oh, no! The *horn* was Valaróma? LOL!!! Poor Bilbo. Apparently he did not know Murphy's Law ;-) Otherwise he would not have chosen the horn as his hiding place. At least there is one positive aspect of Bilbo's situation: No matter what happens next, there is definitely NO respectable hobbit around to witness it!
Author's reply
Hello Andrea, How very true. Whether Bilbo ends up shoving himself head-first into that pot, the only honnit who'll ever know of his disgrace is himself (and it probably won't bother him too much, either!!) Don't think hobbit's have Murphy's Law (haha, loved that). But as of today, they very well might have Baggin's Law! Glad you enjoyed Bilbo's latest misadventure! Thanks for R & R-ing, M :)
dshael · 7 June 2010 · Chapter 2: Horn o' plenty
Oh, this is too funny. Can't wait for the next chapter! Poor Bilbo! ::giggling::
Author's reply
Hello dshael, glad you're having a good laugh. Poor Bilbo, indeed. It's looking ever more unlikely that he'll get his hands on (or lips round) that pot of stew ... Thanks for the lovely feedback, m'dear, M :)
Larner · 6 June 2010 · Chapter 2: Horn o' plenty
This is proving SO delightful! I am impressed!
Author's reply
Hello Larner, wow! I'm ecstatic that you like 'Hobbit Stew' so much. I really am!! I only hope you enjoy Bilbo's resolution to his problems (which are manifold) as much as you've enjoyed his misadventures so far :) Thanks very much for R & R-ing, M :o)
Dreamflower · 6 June 2010 · Chapter 2: Horn o' plenty
Oh, this is so much fun! I love Bilbo's desperate obsession with that pot of stew! And what a hiding place he'd found. I had a hunch as soon as he'd climbed up there that it would turn out to be an inconveniet spot! Dear me! What next? *peers hopefully*
Author's reply
Hello Dreamflower, *giggles in delight* Oh, I'm so glad you're enjoying Bilbo's misadventures! Poor little hobbit! Trust him to pick the only hiding place that would become the centre of attention shortly afterwards. So much for his stew ... Unless he comes up with a cunning plan to beat the odds (which are massive). Thank you SO much for the MEFA nomination for 'Hobbit Stew'! Not in my wildest dreams (and, trust me, they are very wild) did I think that Bilbo's Mirkwood gapfiller would earn such an accolade! Thanks for R & R-ing, M :)
shirebound · 6 June 2010 · Chapter 2: Horn o' plenty
how civilised could they be, if they kept their dining room so far away from the kitchen? LOL, a good question indeed! This is wonderfully hobbity. I look forward to the conclusion.
Author's reply
Hello shirebound, 'wonderfully hobbity', eh? *blush* Thanks very much! That's quite a compliment. I'm chuffed to bits that you're enjoying the Mirkwood madness so much! Thanks for R & R-ing, m'dear, M :)
Larner · 14 April 2010 · Chapter 1: Food, food everywhere (and not a drop to spare)
You have certainly caught the flavor of "The Hobbit," and done it superbly! An excellent story, well told!
Author's reply
Hello Larner, forgive the delayed reply; I was on some 'time off' for a week or two. But what a lovely review to come back to! High praise indeed from such an accomplished and excellent author as your good self. I'm thrilled 'Hobbit Stew' captured the mood of 'The Hobbit' for you - I hope the next chapter does just as well in your estimation (if poor hungry Bilbo ever figures out a way to snatch a morsel or two from a hundred sharp-eared elves). Thanks for R & R-ing, M :)
Antane · 8 April 2010 · Chapter 1: Food, food everywhere (and not a drop to spare)
Quite acceptable, my dear cousin! Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this. I just finished my third reading of The Hobbit yesterday. Poor Bilbo. So near and yet so far from food. Love all your asides. Namarie, God bless, your Tookish bloom and berry :)
Author's reply
Hello m'dear, sorry about the delayed response. I've been taking some time off writing to recharge my batteries (and find my muse). I also just recently finished reading The Hobbit. It's such a wonderful story - I don't think I ever really appreciated it before. But I do now! That's why Bilbo got his very own fic - all I have to do now is figure out how he's going to get his stew ... But, no fear: I'm sure Bilbo will be out-foxing those elegant elves before long. He'll have to, if he doesn't want to starve :) Thanks for R & R-ing, cousin! Mo McGamgee
Jay of Lasgalen · 7 April 2010 · Chapter 1: Food, food everywhere (and not a drop to spare)
This is great! I don't often read Hobbit fic, but as this is set in the Elvenking's halls, I decided to look ... I like poor Bilbo's musings and ramblings on leg of elf, and the torment of seeing and smelling all that food! I think you've got his character (and expressions) spot on - this could easily be an outtake from The Hobbit. Jay
Author's reply
Hello Jay, you know, I don't often read Hobbit fic myself, to be honest. But I came over all funny after reading the book recently & felt that the tale of Bilbo's fortnight in the Elvenking's Hallitself s needed a little background story. Hobbits and elves - they're just such an irresistible combination!! And I'm beyond flattered that you think the fic decent enough to be an outtake *beams wildly* !!! That's a heck of a compliment ;) Thanks for R & R-ing, M :)
elliska · 6 April 2010 · Chapter 1: Food, food everywhere (and not a drop to spare)
Bilbo is wonderful in this. Definitely captures the feel of The Hobbit. Loved it so far.
Author's reply
Hello elliska, thanks! I really enjoyed writing Bilbo. He's so very hobbity throughout his Grand Adventure, regardless of whether he's fighting spiders or eluding elves (or hungry dragons). I never really appreciated the depth of his character before, or how truly brave he was to leave the Shire and go on such a dangerous, fraught-filled journey with fourteen people he never really knew. Don't know if I could do that! Thanks for R & R-ing, Kara's Aunty :o)
Dreamflower · 5 April 2010 · Chapter 1: Food, food everywhere (and not a drop to spare)
*squee!* This is utterly lovely! Very, very Bilbo-ish, and very like The Hobbit in tone and style! I love all the little parenthetical interpolations about Shire-life, and also Bilbo's ruminations about the food! Also, this is an episode about which I have LONG desired to see fic! Thank you dear!
Author's reply
Hello Dreamflower, gosh, what a LOVELY review! And I'm really happy that it has distinguished itself in your mind as a definite 'The Hobbit' fic. I must admit that, until recently, I always found 'Lord of The Rings' the more absorbing of the two works; but I read 'The Hobbit' again last week and - maybe because it was the second time - but I found more to enjoy in it. The tone of the book appealed to me more than it did before, and I sympathised more with Bilbo this time round. I was finally able to see him as an important and multi-faceted character in his own right, as opposed to just Frodo's mad uncle who found the One Ring on a jaunt in the wild and stuck it in his pocket for the next sixty-odd years. Though a little sharp to the dwarves on occasion (although, truthfully, they sometimes deserve it), Bilbo has wit, charm and a depth of character that I never appreciated before. He is also much braver than I ever gave him credit for, and smart enough to out-trick not only Gollum, but a multitude of ravenous spiders, a kingdom of (rather cocky) elves AND an overconfident and thoroughly conceited dragon. So this wee fic is a sort of apology/homage to a character I underestimated very unkindly for several years, which is why I tried to capture all the elements I have only now discovered about him: his love of home, hearth, food, comfort and an easy life - and also the spark of Tookishness that sent him running into the greatest adventure of his life. I'm THRILLED you liked it so much! Ah, Bilbo. What a man! Er, hobbit!! (I tried to italiicse 'hobbit' there; bet you anything it didn't work ...) Thanks very much for R & R-ing, m'dear. Your lovely review really made my evening! M :) Author Reply: The italics worked. COOL, COOL, COOL!!!
shirebound · 5 April 2010 · Chapter 1: Food, food everywhere (and not a drop to spare)
Poor hungry Bilbo! But in a pinch, the Tookish side of him rises to the surface and he finds his courage and creativity. This is a good gap filler. Now Bilbo needs to find a stomach filler! :)
Author's reply
Hello shirebound, *grins* I loved your last line - very funny! I'm sure his Tookish side will rise to the challenge of procuring that stew (I just hope my imagination does too, or he's in real trouble). Thanks for R & R-ing. Actually, you're my first reviewer on my first Hobbit-centric fic, so extra thanks for that! :o) M :)
