Andrea · 7 July 2010 · Chapter 22: A Logical Conclusion

It *is* logical! And it's understandable that a hobbit like Frodo comes to such a conclusion. But I can't believe it's true! So, what will Gandalf's answer be?

Author's reply

It's very understandable, and it *IS* a logical conclusion to come to after a study of the Third Age. If you knew nothing more about than the bare facts, it would certainly seem reasonale.

Lindelea · 7 July 2010 · Chapter 22: A Logical Conclusion

Awww. Poor Frodo. He sounds as if he needs a hug.

Author's reply

I am sure he could always use a hug!

Larner · 7 July 2010 · Chapter 22: A Logical Conclusion

Just the thought of predestination is proving such a bitter pill for Frodo to swallow, apparently! Now, to hear Gandalf's side of the story!

Author's reply

It's a bitter pill for a lot of people who don't really understand the concept. And I think, it would be difficult to understand for one who was raised in a society that did not espouse any religious beliefs.

Celeritas · 6 July 2010 · Chapter 21: Frodo Takes a Walk

Now I'm imagining a new As Seen on TV product: Instant Hobbit! Always available for quick fixes whenever your Music goes awry! And that makes me think of a theory within a different and obscurer fic that I've read that suggests that Gandalf, during the music, sang of the insignificant things and somehow that helped translate to hobbits and the Shire. Also--the idea that what makes LotR so singularly appealing is that it is the intersection of hobbits and these ancient myths, because the Silm was so bleak on its own and hobbits were really an afterthought--albeit a blessed one--in Tolkien's own mind! So you can see this has me thinking a lot tonight! And it looks as if Frodo will have more food for thought as well. :) Looking forward to your next installment of this.

Author's reply

LOL! Actually, I wouldn't mind having an Instant Hobbit for myself... Ooh! I'd love to read that one! If you remember where it is or who wrote it, let me know! I like that idea! I know. Dana and I often felt Turin would not have been nearly so angsty and emo if he'd had a hobbit for a friend. Frodo's been thinking a lot. He gets to explain himself soon.

Larner · 6 July 2010 · Chapter 21: Frodo Takes a Walk

Well, of COURSE they were included in the Great Music--but were a leitmotif of their own, a special glory of comfortable but shining notes that few noted at the time.... Silly lad! Love this!

Author's reply

Yes, they were! But really, it's not so much silliness on Frodo's part as a lack of certain knowledge. He does have logic on his side, so far as he knows... Gandalf will help to set him straight.

GamgeeFest · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 21: Frodo Takes a Walk

Frodo has always taken solace in his rambles, hasn't he? But when one lacks the answers he needs, even the peaceful woods of the Blessed Realm can only do so much. Glad that he and Gandalf are finally having this much needed discussion. This should be very interesting! *waits impatiently*

Author's reply

Yes-- a ramble can only help so much. But Gandalf is ready to talk.

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 21: Frodo Takes a Walk

At last, Frodo will get some of his questions answered. I wish Gandalf good luck with that. : )

Author's reply

Yes, he will get at least some of them answered, and hopefully be put on the right track to answer some of the others himself.

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 20: Gandalf Considers

I wouldn't want to try and answer all of Frodo's questions. Gandalf will have his hands full.

Author's reply

He will. But if anyone is in a position to *have* some of those answers, well, Gandalf is the first to come to mind!

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 19: Time Out

Gandalf to the rescue! Like always. : )

Author's reply

Indeed! *grin*

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 18: Memory

That would be a very troubling thought indeed, that your entire life and that of your people had only been for one purpose. It's not something that would be pleasant to consider even if that purpose had been so great a task.

Author's reply

No, it's never pleasant to think that you've been used, even if, as you said, it was to a great task.

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 17: Troubling Questions

Oops! It looks as if Frodo believes that all that was done for hobbits was done so he might one day destroy the Ring. I wonder if that was all there was to it, though...

Author's reply

Well, if you look at the history of the Third Age, coldly and logically, and just look at the actual events-- it is certainly a possibility that has to be thought of... But of course that can't be *all* there is to it, anymore than cold logical reason is all there is to life...

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 16: Secrecy

Adamanta takes very good care of her charges.

Author's reply

Yes, she does indeed. Of course, she's beginning to take a personal interest!

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 15: Encounter Among the Trees (part 2)

Tuk is as curious about the Elves as Bilbo always was. Nice connection.

Author's reply

Yes, he is curious! And JRRT did hint that the hobbits and Elves had some dealings at one time...

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 14: Encounter Among the Trees (part 1)

Making a bit of mischief, is she? LOL I like that she did things that way rather than just stepping into the open and speaking to all concerned.

Author's reply

Yes, she was a bit mischievous, wasn't she? She certainly contributed her share to the Tookish bloodline!

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 13: And So It Begins...

I always like it when she speaks of Tuk. You can feel the love in her words.

Author's reply

Thank you! I want it to be clear how dearly she loved him, and how he truly has her heart still, even now.

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 12: Home Cooking

Oh, my the recipe looks delicious! No wonder Frodo and Bilbo enjoyed it so much.

Author's reply

It most definitely *is* delicious! Very rich, as well!

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 11: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

Mushrooms! It would seem that Bilbo has told her the way to Frodo's heart already. LOL

Author's reply

I imagine mushrooms have been the way to countless numbers of hobbit-hearts over the ages...*grin*

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 10: A Walk in the Garden

Interesting. So she is planning on getting to know Frodo better and become close to him. I like that idea.

Author's reply

Well, he's her many-generations-removed-great-grandson, so she naturally takes a motherly interest in him!

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 9: Adamanta Calls Again

Looks like Bilbo will have to put off that baking for a bit. I wonder what Adamanta wants...

Author's reply

Not for too long, though, I hope! And of course, you've seen now what she wants.

Grey Wonderer · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 8: Where Mercy, Love and Pity Dwell

I lost track of this somehow but now I've found it again. I can see why Gandalf was impressed with the hobbits from the beginning. Very generous folks, hobbits. : )

Author's reply

Well, you've been away! I hope you had a great time! Yes, they are a generous and compassionate race! I hope to tell Gandalf's story in more detail one of these days...

Virtuella · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 21: Frodo Takes a Walk

Yes, I would imagine this is not the kind of question that can be answered by reading a book. Now I'm curious as to what Gandalf has to tell!

Author's reply

No, it's not one to be answered from a book. But if anyone can answer it for Frodo, Gandalf can.

Antane · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 21: Frodo Takes a Walk

I just love this story! I am at once chomping at the bit to hear more and the same time enjoying how drawn out it is. This is going to get very interesting. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Well, of course, it is drawn out by necessity, when every chapter is no more than 300 words! It will take me longer to come to the point, I think! 8-)

Andrea · 5 July 2010 · Chapter 21: Frodo Takes a Walk

Wow! What an interesting turn of events! I very much liked Gandalf's analysis of Frodo's character. What will he conclude, I wonder! On the other hand, I can understand what troubles Frodo. It's a very important question he ponders. And it's crucial to his healing, I think. So, what will be Gandalf's answer? I'm curious to find out more!

Author's reply

It's a very important question he ponders. Yes, it is, and it is quite bound up in Frodo's healing, and in his learning his and his people's place in the world.

GamgeeFest · 4 July 2010 · Chapter 20: Gandalf Considers

A lovely introspective moment as Gandalf contemplates what makes this particular Baggins tick. He does know his hobbits well.

Author's reply

Indeed he does! I love to show Gandalf thinking about hobbits!

Virtuella · 3 July 2010 · Chapter 20: Gandalf Considers

You've made me really, really impatient to hear those answers now!

Author's reply

LOL! I really did not have this chapter in order to be a cliffie of sorts-- I needed to have Gandalf bring some of this up, to set the parameters of the conversation, because of the 300 word limit. In some ways, I wish I was not constrained by that-- I could get on with the story much more easily if not for that pesky word limit! But I do enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to advance the story and fulfill the limit at the same time; every now and then, though, there's going to be a place where I have to pause to set things up-- not noticeable in a conventional chapter, but very much so when the chapters have to be so short.
