Yes, it was a long chapter. There is so much in the Ring-war it is going to be difficult to know what to put in.
And you are right - Umar never gives up!

This was an interesting chapter!
I doubt Denethor really does know what is going to happen to Boromir. If only he listened, it could've helped, but Gondor's society is patriarchal... The actions that Faramir does in this chapter definitely are a great way to understand his character.
There's something inside me that makes me doubt Boromir is going to listen to all Eomer said.
Can't wait for the next update!
Author's reply
To be honest, I have always wondered why Boromir went out alone into orc infested country? It seems strange to put the Steward's heir into so much danger. But there - we shall never know quite why.

Well Lady Bluejay I had to laugh at the beginning of this chapter,Tinusel reminds of my mother with the way she talks, I really felt bad for Lothiriel when Denethor sent her away but maybe she would be safer far away from him, and I liked seeing the two children taken care of so well, will be waiting faithfully for the next chapter Deb

I had to add a bit of humour, glad you liked it. As to whether Lothiriel is safer? Time will tell on that one. Thanks for reviewing.LBJ

That was a hard chapter to read, but I'm glad I did, it made me see more of the reality of life for Eomer. I am glad the children were safe. Such a harch life for them. I'm glad Lothiriel made a friend and is not so alone. Will wait for more, Deb

I have been remiss in telling you how much I am enjoying this - I'm sorry.
This chapter demanded to be read at breakneck speed - and well worth it! A couple of problems likely to pop up in the next few as a result, I fear, but I'm sure it will be an "interesting" journey.
Thank you - looking forward to more :)

I admit I do like reviews - I like to know readers are enjoying as it gives me encouragement to write - so thank you. Hope you continue to enjoy the rest, but some problems do no surface for years! LBJ

This is a powerful chapter, especially the ending,Eomer is certainly in for with Grima, Lothirial seems also to be in kind of a bad situation with Denethor, once again I can't tell you enough how much I love your stories Thankyou Deb P.S. Sorry it took me so long to review but when I first read it I was way to tired to do it justice, so I had to read it again.

Yes, I think Eomer realtionship with Grima has gone from bad to worse. But Lothiriel is just in a bad situation and would really like to hide from life. Thanks for reviewing - glad you are enjoying. LBJ

Lothiriel is very lucky - Umar must be spitting nails, but I doubt he'll be giving up any time soon. Poor horse. Not to mention the men-at-arms, of course, but they don't really have the furry factor. I hope Sergon survives to fight the slimeball off again another day.
While Eomer should avoid - er - physical intimacy with Bergit. It does rather detract from his moral stand of true friendship and loyalty.

I had to think hard about killing off the horse!

A very exciting bit of action over the last two chapters! Loved the confrontation with Umar in the previous chapter and Lothiriel's determination to fight in this one. And the scene with the ribbons was a funny bit of needed relief.

I can't wait for more of this! I really don't like that you had to leave this chapter off with a cliffhanger because what was happenning to Lothiriel was getting very interesting. The wedding of Meren and Erchi was very sweet. It's nice to have something happy occur in all these dark, serious events that have occurred so far in the story.
How old is Lothiriel in this chapter? Eomer?
Author's reply
Hi Alquawende,
Lothiriel is about sixteen or seventeen and Eomer twenty-four, in this chapter. I often mention it in the narrative, but forgot in this one, I think.
The chapter got so long I had to stop it somewhere and it seemed a good spot. And you are right about the happy events - I will slip in a few amongst the angst!

Augh! That was a good cliifhanger That creep! Well I guess I just have to wait, but this chapter got me so wound up I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, I am so glad the horse was loyal to her in the end, and I hope Amroth will make it there on time. I think the affair with Eomer is sad and hope her husband never will find out, as if isn't enough that he is crippled to know that would certainly be painful, anyway Great chapter!, it is always worth the wait. A creep indeed! And the horse came good - foiling his plans. Eomer's affair is sad - but not all could have been perfect in his life - or others like Edwick -at that time. Thanks for reviewing. LBJ.

I thought I had better let you know that I am still reading this and enjoying it immensely. At one stage I had to go back and read it again to get all your OCs and their relationships sorted out in my brain. I particularly enjoyed Lothiriel's sojourn with Seron. I thought for a bit that he had to be T.H. White's Merlin dropped out of another universe. He seemed so much more confident about what would happen than what had happened and Merlin, of course, was living backwards so that was his characteristic too. Anyway I think I identified him more accurately later.
Another similarity, that I see in these early chapters, with The Sword in the Stone is the education/personal development of your two young protagonists. They both have natural skills and strengths which with initial youthful enthusiasm they expect to be all that is going to be necessary but through their experiences they are learning that their natural talents are not enough. They have to cope with situations where a learned response is more appropriate than a natural one and by now they are both actively seeking to develop a proper balance between these two poles.
In this chapter I was delighted to meet Duinhir's wife and I wonder whether this tale will cross over with the lovely story you wrote about the River Lord's homecoming after the Ring War. I do hope so.
Well this week's typo to challenge the spell check is a particularly fine one. (At least I think it's a typo. Grins.) When you write "with the coming of spring to the Riddermark the treat of raids increased tenfold" I think perhaps you may have intended "threat". I am not sure you should correct this one. I have been giggling about it for days.
Pryderi.
Author's reply
Thanks for your lovely review. I did not intentionally model Seron on Merlin - but it is a book I love so maybe I did it subconsciously.
The tale will cross - in part two - with my Duinhir story - 'The Return'. I wrote it for that reason and will direct readers to it later on.

I started this last evening and I couldn't stop reading it! It was very intense. I hadn't read any of it before so it was all new to me, which is wonderful. Poor Lothiriel with losing her 'innocence' that way and having to be afraid all of the time now. It's so tough for her over those four years and then she meets, I think, Mithrandir, is my guess. Her poor family during that week and how they suffered.
Eomer's struggles are not a lot of fun either, though in a totally different way. I do hope that his feels for Bergit will subside because that's not a good situation!
Well done story and I look forward to the next chapter.

Good for Eomer. A good use of a mirror. Now Edwick is getting over the sorry-for-himself stage, he should be OK - since is is brave and heroic and loving.
And 'Seron' has plans for Lothiriel ... Somehow the vision of him meticulously arranging the little things, so that the big things have to flow along a path of his making is very, very Mithrandir.

Eomer is already showing his leadership qualities and I am sure Edwick will come to terms with his injury.

And Bergit needs a friend - so it's a good thing Eomer's there. He might not be able to foresee a need to be there so far ahead he needs to check what year it is, but he'll certainly be able to help to some extent.

Poor Bergit! I would sink under all that work and the recent events. Eomer is so gallant to her and it makes me wish all men were like him. I'm glad though that her husband has gotten rid of his pride to make baskets. Reminds me of another story here at SoA.
I like that Lothiriel won't be a spoiled princess. She'll learn what it's like to work and she won't be naive about the world which'll make her wiser hopefully.

Hi Alquawende,
I wondered if someone would ask me that. Fireball is the horse Eomer had before Firefoot. He inherited from his father. Dont forget the Ring-wars took place when Eomer was 28 - seven years hence from this scene.Eomer will meet Firefoot soon.
