Poor Elrond! I wish they didn't have to be parted like that.

Very nice, and sad. You feel the sadness Elrond feels and can tell the similarities to Elros and Elrond and Elrohir and Elladan... Nice job
Lilandriel · 25 January 2008 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
ah, but this is very sad! i don't recall reading this one before, but if i have please excuse my lapse in memory! i was worried at first that it was a younger set of twins, and then i realised that it was Elrond and Elros. :-( in truth, these two are among my favouritist of Tolkiens characters but (although, this could just be me not looking in the right places!) i can't find a great deal in cannon about them both together, their younger years as it were. i have always thought that Elrond would be there at the end; in all honesty where else could he be? the last of his kin is passing from the world, and won't be seen again until Arda is remade, and painful as it must be i'm sure he'd be guilty for the rest of his life if he wasn't there. do you have any fics of Elrond telling his sons about his brother, like he wished, and some of the mischief they got up to? i find it amazing the way that you manage to capture such a huge array of emotions; this one is particuarly sad and poignant (and yet, there at the end it made me smile), and some of your other stories are full of humor and laughter, and you always do it so well. awesome
Author's reply
I was being mean - you were meant to think it was Elladan and Elrohir at first! I don't think it's canon that Elrond was at Elros' side as he died - but as you say, Tolkien wrote so little about them. It allowed me to interpret what he didn't say! I haven't written anything about Elrond telling his sons about their uncle yet - I'll have to add it to the (long) list of stories I still want to write. Thank you so much for your kind words!!
Bodkin · 5 September 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
Ahh! Elros and Elrond had had time to grow apart - but their bonds were deep. And I suppose it would be some consolation to see his brother reunited - in a way - with his mother and father. And I'm glad you didn't kill off Elrohir. That would have been a very cruel thing to do!
Author's reply
It was bad enough knowing that Elrond and Elros chose different fates. It was sad to write this, even though it's canon (though I doubt Elrond was really there.) I couldn't do it to Elladan and Elrohir - I believe they both chose to be of elvenkind!! The misdirection was fun, though ;)
Larner · 1 September 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
Actually, Hughes in my ISP--the ISP from Mordor. It likes to cut me off just when I have a review finished, leaving me unable to post it. Once they have DSL or cable out my way I'll be switching over away from the satellite provide as quickly as I can. How long that will be I have no idea, however, as they were supposed to have it run to my area three years ago. They lied, obviously.
Author's reply
I'm lucky - although I live in a small village, we got cable a couple of years ago. I signed up immediately, and I'd never go back to dial up!
Selene Aduial · 30 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
You just had to go and make me cry had you? I have always felt that Elrond had to be there when Elros passed away and now you wrote it for me, thanks. I know you were trying to fool us readers, but I did not think you would ever write a story with Elladan and Elrohir choosing a different fate, so I knew it had to be Elrond and Elros.
Author's reply
I don't think it's canon, but I wanted Elrond to be with Elros when he died. I wanted to make people think it was Elladan and Elrohir, but knew I wouldn't fool everyone! I want the twins to chose the same fate, but did once write about them being parted: A Final Farewell
Kitty · 30 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
You tricked me, Jay. First I thought of Elrond and Elros, but as one called the other 'El', I feared it were Elladan and Elrohir. So I was somehow glad my initial guess was right. Anyway, it was very sad and left me crying, but it was beautiful, too. I don't know if Elrond truly was there, but I always thought he *should* have been. It is comforting to know they were together and able to say goodbye. And Elros' remark about Elrond having twins was something like foresight. The white bird was their mother Elwing, wasn't it? I only wonder who the other one was. And I loved the image of Elros as the new star besides their father.
Author's reply
This parting could only be Elrond and Elros, but I wanted people to think it was Elladan and Elrohir at first ;/ The first bird was Elwing, then she escorted Elros into the heavens so he could be a new star next to Earendil.
Agape4Gondor · 29 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
BEAUTIFUL - absolutely heart-rendingly beautiful. I loved this line... '...Tell them, El – tell them of us; of me.”
Author's reply
Thank you. I wanted Elros to know of his twin nephews in some way, and this foresight was perfect.
JastaElf · 29 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
Oh, that's lovely... sad, but lovely! The symbolism of the sea birds and the stars is so poignant! Just a lovely job! *stands and applauds*
Author's reply
Thanks, Jasta - I'm glad you got the symbolism here. I didn't want to have to spell it out!
Mirkwoodmaiden · 28 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
Jay! I love this! My only compliant is that I had a plot bunny about this only just starting to hop and you've captured this moment in the lives of Elrond and Elros so well that I don't think I wuld be able to better it! Alas! Having said that thought I did really love it. You captured the sorrow and doubt of Elrond so well and Elros' words of wisdom to his older brother were chosen! Elros becoming a star near his father was a lovely touch! MM
Author's reply
If you've got a similar plot bunny, then please write it! I love to see how very different story plans can be, even when they start from the same idea.
Silvertree · 28 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
omg... that was so sad! at first i thought it was elladan and elrohir, then i REALIZED IT WAS REALLY ELROND AND ELROS. it was really really good. broke my heart, but it was awesome!
Author's reply
Thank you! It's one of the times when I like to be tricksy and mean. Jay

That was very sad and deeply felt. The ending was beautiful. Loved the two stars at the end. wonder who the second bird was. Well done!
Author's reply
Thank you! The birds were Elwing, then Elros, as she escorted him to the heavens.

Whew, you scared me for a moment there Jay. I think I went into full blown valium inducing panic attack thinking it was Elladan and Elrohir. Very touching, sweet and sad story. Thanks for the treat. E
Author's reply
Sorry - but I wanted you to think that, even though Tolkien had already told us about Elrond and Elros. I'm glad you liked this.
daw the minstrel · 28 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
Lovely, Jay. I figured it was Elrond and Elros. How hard it must have been for Elrond to see Elros die. But like him, I believe the peoples of ME were reunited one day--or perhaps I should say will be. It's too painful to think otherwise.
Author's reply
I wanted a litle confusion between Elladan/Elrohir and Elrond/Elros. I knew I wouldn't fool everyone! I wanted Elrond to be there, even though it's probably not canon. Like you, I think Eru wanted his children to be united in the end.
Ces · 28 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
Sweet, yet sad. I have to admit at first I thought this story was about Elladan and Elrohir and was trying to figure out which one was dying. Then I saw Elros and knew! How sad for thost two brothers that they had to be parted but both were at peace with their decisions I think. Another wonderful story from you Jay! Ces
Author's reply
Sorry - I intended you to think it was Elladan & Elrohir at first! I think Elrond probably wasn't there when Elros died - but he should have been. I wanted them to reconcile their differences.
Larner · 28 August 2007 · Chapter 1: The Price Of Being Peredhil
I read this I think on HASA the other night, and don't think that Hughes allowed me to comment on it. This is a beautiful story, and the thought a star burns in the heavens for Elros alongside that of the father of Elros and Elrond is lovely, as is the thought that Elrond would make the journey to Numenor to bid farewell to his mortal brother. A good story.
Author's reply
I'm a Review Admin at HASA, so I'm not allowed to comment on anything there. I'm glad you liked this. I wanted Elrond to be with Elros at the end, even if a second star alongside Earendil isn't canon!
