What a lovely chapter. Aragorn has a fine son, indeed.

Larner · 4 June 2007 · Chapter 6: Chapter Six-In Which There Are Musicians

"It's a very ancient wisdom, but a clear and truthful thought that if you become a teacher by your students you'll be taught." And from Eldarion she begins to learn compassion and thoughtfullness fill him and his father.

harrowcat · 4 June 2007 · Chapter 6: Chapter Six-In Which There Are Musicians

The Proprietor is right. Eldarion is turning out to be a wonderful young man. Hope the finals etc went well.

Linda Hoyland · 4 June 2007 · Chapter 6: Chapter Six-In Which There Are Musicians

A very enjoyable chapter. I love the bond between Aragorn and his son and young Eldarion's thoughtfulness.I would like to know more of Seraphine's past.

Bodkin · 1 May 2007 · Chapter 5: Chapter Five: In Which the Prince Learns About Painting

It's the way Seraphine graciously permits Eldarion to accompany her as she is doing her own thing. How can he resist? And, along the way, he learns far more than her realises. (I'll bet his parents are enjoying the joke of that!) She admits she doesn't know things, too. And that she wants to discover more. A very untypical tutor!

Author's reply

I love the whole "she's not really teaching me because I'm having fun" aspect of their relationship. And yes, I do think that the royal parents are vastly amused by the whole thing. seraphine is turning out to be a very fun character to write. Thanks for reading! ~El

Linda Hoyland · 29 April 2007 · Chapter 5: Chapter Five: In Which the Prince Learns About Painting

Another very enjoyable chapter. It seems Aragorn and Arwen are overturning the worse traditions of the past which is good.I love Eldarion's thirst for knowledge that his new tutor is kindling. I guess you are inspired by Caravaggio in your desciption of the artist?

Author's reply

Thank you! I've been reading several biographies this semester, and the court initiation rights for royal newborns in some is just horrifying, so I felt like addressing it. And yes, it is Caravaggio. Great artist, Caravaggio. I'm glad you like it! ~El

harrowcat · 29 April 2007 · Chapter 5: Chapter Five: In Which the Prince Learns About Painting

Caravaggio by any chance? I was lucky enough to catch an exhibition of his work in London last year. Wonderful and so lifelike. I wanted to step forward and push a bowl of fruit back onto the table before it fell off!

Author's reply

Yes, Caravaggio! I think his art is so wonderful. You are so lucky to have been able to go to an exhibition! ~El

Larner · 28 April 2007 · Chapter 5: Chapter Five: In Which the Prince Learns About Painting

Caraviggio, I think. Love his John the Baptist. Again, the prince's mind and experience are being stretched. Lovely day.

Author's reply

Yes! I'm taking an Art history class, and we just studied the John the Baptist painting, and wow. I am totally in love, and once again something from our world slips into Tolkien's. :) ~El

Larner · 28 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

Ah, tricksy, tricksy, father and sonses here! And Eldarion and Miriel both learn a bit more about a different culture. Lovely details.

Bodkin · 15 April 2007 · Chapter 3: Chapter Three: In Which Eldarion Gains a Tutor

I think Seraphine might have found a friend, too! Two very-highly born ladies in an alien environment - it must act as a draw between Arwen and Seraphine. Plus they are both extremely intelligent and would find it irresisible to learn more about each other and their very different cultures. And the cunning plan proceeds!

Bodkin · 15 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

I'd be laughing silently, too! And Eldarion has roped his sister into this exciting learning process, as well. And proved he has a pretty good grasp of how to get people to do what you want. Clever boy. And he's even done homework! And sent it off to Sam Gamgee for his perusal! I love the range of topics they absorbed here. Completely painlessly.

Linda Hoyland · 14 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

Very enjoyable, this story is a real breath of fresh air, which I look forward to.

Author's reply

Thank you! ~El

Dreamflower · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

This was adorable. I loved Eldarion's sneaky handling of his little sister, and their fascination with the henna and the tales of Harad. And it was so cute the way Eldarions wrote to Sam! I'd love to "see" that letter, and Sam's reaction to it!

Author's reply

Our young prince is already well versed in reverse psychology. Uh-oh. :) Maybe we will see the letter, or one like it. Could be fun.

Telpethoron · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

Oh, Eldarion, if you only knew... I've had experience with henna tattoos (well before I got the real thing) and it was interesting to see the process by which henna is made. Great chapter!

Author's reply

He walked right into it, didn't he? Thanks! ~El

harrowcat · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

Learning you want to do is the best sort. Shame it takes some of us a lifetime to find out.

Author's reply

Yeah, it really is a shame. ~El

A. Meril · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

Eeeee, I'm enjoying this so much, El! Seraphine is so delightful and charming, and her interactions with the royal kids delightful. Love Eldarion sending the recipe to Sam: it's great to see the Fellowship is still close. :)

Author's reply

Good, I'm glad you like it! I think the Fellowship must be like having a lot of uncles spread out all over Arda, for the kids. And I'll bet that the rest of them have no problem with corrupting Aragorn's kids thoroughly. :)

Tigger · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

I keep meaning to leave a review to this, but keep forgetting to. Not this time. :oD This is such a delightful little story. Elda's original tutor reminds me of some of the teachers I had once upon a time. The ones that are structured and regimented make for the worst. They end up killing the desire to learn and make it a chore. Not something to be enjoyed. Something your Haradric Princess has not forgotten at all and I adore. Everyone should have a teacher like that. Loved how Elda got Miriel down to the Lady's House. Tricksy indeed. It runs in the family after all. ;o) Looking forward very much to the next chapter in this lovely story. :o)

Author's reply

Thank you! The best teachers I had during the mandatory school years were the ones who made their subject interesting. If you take all the fun out of learning, there is no point to it. I'm glad you like the story! ~El

shirebound · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 4: Chapter Four: In Which the Royal Children Learn Henna

There's something so lovely about the idea of Eldarion sending Sam recipes! This is just delightful, and I feel as if I'm 'seeing' a new culture in the same way the children are.

Author's reply

Yeah, I have a great line somewhere about hobbits that I need to incorporate. I like that the Fellowship stuck together.

harrowcat · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 3: Chapter Three: In Which Eldarion Gains a Tutor

I am really enjoying this Elendiari. Unfortunately RL is keeping me from reviewing at present.

Author's reply

No worries, I completely understand. :) Thanks for reading! ~El

Larner · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 3: Chapter Three: In Which Eldarion Gains a Tutor

Truly enlightened parents as well as teacher. A most proper handling of the affair, I must say.

Author's reply

Oh, good! I am really hoping that this all comes off as believable. ~El

Larner · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two-In Which Eldarion Makes Ink

Yes, a lovely lesson indeed, as well as a useful skill for anyone to know. One correction--his interest was piqued, not peaked. One of the more common homonym mistakes.

Author's reply

Oik, yeah, I type too fast for my own good. Thanks for pointing that out! ~El

Larner · 13 April 2007 · Chapter 1: Chapter One: In Which a Prince Meets a Princess

Oh, I love it! Diana Wynn Jones meets Tolkien! Lovely! And I agree with Aragorn and Arwen--Eldarion needs his imagination fed as well as his love of learning facts.

Author's reply

I love Diana Wynne Jones. Tolkien was one of her professors, and she makes a mention of LOTR in each of her books, so I thought it fitting to stick her in somewhere. I'm glad you like it! ~El

Telpethoron · 12 April 2007 · Chapter 3: Chapter Three: In Which Eldarion Gains a Tutor

I love what you've written of this story so far. Aragorn strikes me as the type of leader we could use today - one who is open to new ideas, rather than being too attached to the old way of doing things. He spent a great deal of time traveling around Middle Earth, and his son seems to have inherited some of that innate desire to learn. It speaks well of the ruler he'll become when it's time for Aragorn to step down from the throne. I wonder how long it will take Eldarion to realize he has an 'official' tutor - somehow I don't think they'll be able to fool him for long. Thanks for a great tale thus far - looking forward to reading more!

Author's reply

Aragorn strikes me as the type of leader we could use today - one who is open to new ideas, rather than being too attached to the old way of doing things. YES. I also imagine that the upper classes of Gondor are steeped in ancient tradition (and I think pre-Revolution Versailles when I think of Gondor), and that he has to be really open in order to get things done. I don't think Eldarion will be fooled for long, though I doubt he'll say anything. :) Thanks for reading! ~El

Dreamflower · 12 April 2007 · Chapter 3: Chapter Three: In Which Eldarion Gains a Tutor

Arwen's evaluation of Seraphine is quite astute. I like the plan they've made between them--a few months of "trial" before she becomes "official" will be good. Eldarion will be eager to have her teach officially by the time that comes about.

Author's reply

Yes, I think that keeping him in suspense about his future tutor will heighten his like of the princess's lessons, so that in the end he'll probably request her. ~El

Dreamflower · 12 April 2007 · Chapter 2: Chapter Two-In Which Eldarion Makes Ink

Needless to say, as a calligrapher, I loved the account of the ink making. I especially liked that Aragorn couldn't wait to try it out! LOL! Just like a proud Daddy! And I think that the princess is going to make a wonderful tutor!

Author's reply

I found the lesson on some college site, and I'm so glad I did. I hadn't realized that ink making was so easy!
