Garnet Took · 29 March 2007 · Chapter 19: Does One Say "Farewell" to a Ghost?

Pearl, this was a wonderful story. I have been following it with enthusiasm ever since you started it. I was just being very lazy by not logging in and reviewing. To be honest, I hate to see it end. I feel kind of like Other, I hate it that we won't see the ghosts again. At least Jebbin and Other have the consolation of knowing they'll meet again. I figured the power that Castbury and Grittison whelded had something to do with Saruman's voice. I love the characters you've created here. I would really like to know more about them and their later adventures, if they have any. Thanks for taking us on this grand adventure of rediscovery.

Author's reply

Thank you so much, Garnet :-) It means so much that you enjoyed my OCs! At this point, I don't know if they'll be back - but then I never expected to write about them again after the first story, so who knows. Thank you for reading and for reviewing when you have :-)

Daynawayna · 29 March 2007 · Chapter 19: Does One Say "Farewell" to a Ghost?

FINIS?!?!? :O Say it ain't so! OH my goodness Pearl, it can't be over! I'm not done having fun yet! We still have to see what happend to Grittison: did Chalcy ever release him? :D And and the Took and Thain! Was he addle-brained due to his secretary or just old age? A-A-And, and... Rollo! How is he going to 'stay the curse'? And.. and... ::cries, but in a good sort of way:: We must know... precious! LOL Hugs all around to author, readers, the Professor... EVERYONE!! That was WONDERFUL Pearl! Absolutely Fabulous! I'm so sorry to see it come to an end! I so look forward to that email alert that says A new chapter of Remembering Anew has been uploaded to StoriesofArda.com by Pearl Took. Oh, how I'm going to miss that. ::sad sigh:: But I am so glad I came along for the ride... and even gave directions that lead to new and exciting roads. ::wink:: Thank you so much for writing such an amazing story for us to share in. I hope to see Jeb and Oth again in the (near) future, because I KNOW you can't keep Brandybucks with Took blood out of trouble adventure for long! God Bless and thank you soooo much for giving us this Gem, Dayna

Author's reply

Well . . . there is an epilogue :-) I'm hoping to post it Friday or Saturday. There are still a few loose ends to tie up. I'm so very glad you enjoyed this, Daynawayna :-) Thank you for being an important nudger that sent me down this path. You are very welcome! Warm Hobbity Hugs, Pearl

Grey Wonderer · 28 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

Now that was a much better out come. This trial made up for the last one. Bravo! And now I wonder what will happen. I guess I'll just have to wait won't I? This has been a very magical story so far.

Author's reply

Thank you, GW :-) Yes, a real trial, not a farce. I'm posting to day so you won't be waiting long - though we aren't quite to the end, there's an epilogue after the new chapter. Thank you, I like magical :-)

Larner · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

I am proud of those present, that they failed to overwhelmingly condemn Longo. Very much a descendant of both Lotho and Ted, I fear. And love Delphinia and have compassion for Rollo. As for poor Jebiamac--poor, confused ghostling that he was. And I'm still proud of our four for standing by quietly, letting the living deal with the present. Why do we need such reawakenings in order to appreciate things rightly?

Author's reply

Hi Larner :-) I am too. Yes, he is. Thank you, I do too. LOL! Yes, it took him a bit to sort things out. They really understand about having to learn to do things for yourself. Because, we often aren't very bright. (that's why there's nothing new under the sun) An interesting response :-)

PIppinfan1988 · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

Well, at least the Master and I have agreed on one thing: that Longo Caskbury is CRACKED. Yes, Tollo *should* be placed in the same room as his father! The Shire/Buckland would never know he's missing. I hope that arse gets his due, if for nothing else, for beating his little daughter. Well, dear friend, as I've said all along, you have a lovely gift. Most of us readers had the Master pegged as a spineless, witless, good-for-nothing arse. I just came from BS so I can't use language *too* strong (at least until tomorrow morning when I get to work!). Now you have us all eating out of the palm of your hand - now viewing him as a hobbit who's recovered his wits and backbone (and some other male body parts). I see that as the talent of an excellent writer. :-) Brilliant story, brilliant author. :-) I'm looking forward the the next chapter! PF

Author's reply

Thank you so much dear Pippinfan :-) I'm glad the change in Macimas seemed right to you, I was hoping it would. "other male body parts" LOL LOL You are, as always, too kind. Thank you!

Daynawayna · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

:O this is me, speechless again! OK, except for a SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! And more WOW's! and AMAZING's! Good God Pearl, where does it come from?!?! this is sooooo awesome! I love that Jeb showed up! And the ever-haughty Longo... interesting that HE is really "old pompous" and not the Master. You've woven (is that a word?) a wonderful web here, my dear, and I can't wait to find out how it all plays out. I'm guessing that the Thain will be much more himself when he is met by his sister and the others when they go see about Tollo.... I wonder if the Mistress will speak within earshot of the man? :::giggles wickedly:: Gawd I love it!!!!!!!

Author's reply

Speechless again! Wow :-) My web is nearly finished so hopefully you won't have long to wait. "Good God Pearl, where does it come from?!?!" I'll answer that with a quote from Stephen King, about the members in his rock band: "We are all writers. We never ask each other where our ideas come from. We know we don't know." So glad you're loving it, Daynawayna!

PIppinfan1988 · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 17: Primary Sources

Yikes almighty!!! How the HECK did I miss this??? I was waiting with abated breath for *this* chapter and then missed it, lol. I've been out of it lately, so I do apologize. :-( Well I wasn't guessing ahead like Larner, but my wishes were with hers. I was hoping that Frodo would make an appearance at some point, and I'm glad he did at the trial. I *loved* the whole part of Frodo's snake-like reflexes with Longo, lol! And the idiot still had cheek in the "face" of death. And the anagrams were absolutely brilliant! Then again, I have come to expect that of you (and of Dreamflower). :-D Pearl, I was wrapped and spellbound the whole time I was reading this most excellent chapter. This is SUCH a marvellous story! I do have to get ready for BS right now, though I will come back to this after I return tonight. :-D Wow...this was great! PF

Author's reply

*blushing* You are, as usual, too kind, dear PippinFan. No apology needed, truly :-) I just figure ghosts should be able to move faster than we do, not being solid as it were :-) Yes, thank goodness that Dreamflower came up with that. The other name that I had was really awful. I'll be looking forward to your next response!!

Dreamflower · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

Well, this is an eye-opener, and no mistake, as Sam would have said. *grin* I do like the way Macimas has suddenly grown a backbone; clearly there was a bit more than just the secretary's personal charm and persuasion at work. I'm wondering how Lotho's descendants had maintained their power over the years. I have some very odd ideas... This has been so fun to get home to.

Author's reply

Again, I'm glad to give you a fun homecoming :-) I fear the suddenness of Macimas' change of heart is a bit of a stretch, but it's how it seemed to want to happen. Send me an email of your odd ideas ;-) Thank you for all your kind reviews and help, Dreamflower! :-)

Dreamflower · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 17: Primary Sources

Lovely to get home and find these posted! And new to me, as well! I'm so glad that it was *ALL* of our lads! Well, now the Cask-/Sack connection is finally out in the open. I'd been waiting for that revelation, of course, with bated breath, and the means of the revelation was absolutely rivetting! Well done, dear!

Author's reply

I'm happy I could provide a pleasant welcome home, Dreamflower :-) I'm so pleased that you found the revelation of your cleverness "rivetting". That really makes me feel so good :-) Thank you again for the great idea!!

Andrea · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

Dear Pearl, There I thought I had only missed one chapter, or two. But actually it were four ;-) Oh dear! How could that happen? I'm still fascinated with this story and satisfied by its progress! It began with Chalcedony's and her friends arrival at Brandy Hall. And like an avalanche their progress grew faster and stronger. When that unnamed ghost appeared, I thought "Frodo!". Don't ask me why, it was just a feeling. (And I have no proof for it!) But I would never have thought that the Caskburys and Grittisons are descendants of Lotho Sackville-Baggins! It's absolutely believable and makes perfect sense. Longo is definitely no better than his ancestor. No one should treat his daughter like that! But his son is different, and so I found Macimas' decision was right, and wise. For the first time in his life he is able to make his own decisions - and he's very good at it.

Author's reply

Hi Andrea! I'd missed you, I'm glad you're back :-) I'm so glad the ancestry of the Caskburys and Grittisons surprised you :-) I'm also very glad that, "It's absolutely believable and makes perfect sense." That is usually what I try for in my stories. Longo is horrid. Every bit as horrid as Lotho. I felt that since Rollo hadn't actually begun his time of "ruling" a Master of Buckland that the rot would not have gone as deep yet. That and I felt he loved his sister and the shock of that hit hard. I just didn't have the heart to let Macimas stay ruined.

Cuthalion · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

My dear, that was shocking... and most shocking of all was how that sad travesty of a father treated his children. What he spat at his daughter was far more disturbing than the appearance of a dozen ghosts. Cúthalion

Author's reply

Thank you, Cuthalion. I had begun to write this chapter and had no idea what would happen to make Longo lose his grip. Delphinia stepped out of the crowd and took care of him for me. It seems that eventually all the male descendants of Lotho and Ted took on their nastiest traits. I'm think it was as they started using the power they had obtained - power corrupts.

shirebound · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

Yay! This is such an impressive story, Pearl.

Author's reply

Aw *embarrassed blushing* Thank you so much, shirebound! :-)

Bob's Your Uncle · 27 March 2007 · Chapter 18: Another Trial

I'm glad not all the Caskbury's are irredeemable - poor Delphinia and Rollo. The truth is well and truly out and the Caskbury/Grittison reign is at an end.

Author's reply

Hi, Bob's Your Uncle! I always feel if Tolkien could have Lobeila Sackville-Baggins repent of her ways, then I should also have mercy :-) Yes, they have seen the end of their rule. Thank you so much for reading and responding :-)

Larner · 25 March 2007 · Chapter 17: Primary Sources

I think perhaps I've been obsessing on Tolkien FAR too long--since 1963-64 at least, you realize. Oh, how wonderful to find I'm correct on all counts! And the anagram and synonym usage is wonderful! So, this is a long-standing plot to make Frodo lose what little honor he ever received within the Shire, and to make Pippin and Sam look ridiculous, although there wasn't much they could truly do to belittle Sam, for he always tried hiding his Light under a bushel, I fear. As for the prize--let me think on that, for I'm certain I'll think of a good one; only beware, as I've found several of what I thought were plotbunnies running about the place have actually been immature nuzguls, as I've said recently. Am so glad all FOUR of them at the end showed up at this trial, and that the nasty little conspiracy has been fully unmasked. And I still grieve that THE Redbook was lost, and that so many of Sam's descendants gave over their ancestor's hard-fought grace and honor to belittle what they held in their midst, leaving it unread for years.

Author's reply

You have me beaten on length of time as a Tolkien obsessive - I first read Tolkien (being LOTR) in 1966. Long-standing indeed, almost back to when Sam, Merry and Pippin were still in the Shire. The un-hobbitiness of their family backgrounds followed them. All four was all that seemed right, how could I leave anyone out? The Red Book being lost is Tolkien's fault - if he hadn't said that it had been lost I wouldn't have had to lose it. I've done some looking about and to be honest, I can't figure out what the difference is between plotbunnies and nuzguls. If you know, could you write me @ radicalmomssr@yahoo.com and explain it *embarrassed Pearl*. Thank you so much for your faithful reading and responding, Larner, and congratulations on figuring out my plot twists! :-)

Daynawayna · 25 March 2007 · Chapter 17: Primary Sources

WOW! WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! WAAAAY TOO COOL! OMG! Pearl this is amazing!! I love it! All 4 Travelers are there!?!? and the Letter! SHAZAM! I am so proud of what this has become... you are wonderful, and I can't wait to see how it all ends!

Author's reply

aw shucks *embarrassed blushing*. Thank you, Daynawayna, for nudging and for reading and responding so faithfully! :-) This has turned out to be quite the ride!

Grey Wonderer · 25 March 2007 · Chapter 17: Primary Sources

I love this: (The ghost of Meriadoc turned and gave them all a wink. Pippin continued happily on.) Even as a ghost, Pippin can't keep still! I also loved Merry's wink. The entire chapter was excellent. I was glad that all four ghosts got in on the action. Unlike Larner, I thought the first ghost was Merry. I have no Took sight at all in these matters.

Author's reply

Larner has been spooky with this story! I'm beginning to wonder if she's a long lost twin to me or something. LOL! I'm so glad you liked that part, GW :-) Those two *do* like having fun. Thank you so much for everything, GW!

Grey Wonderer · 25 March 2007 · Chapter 16: A Second Chance

I love the way Chalcedony is using her Tookish gifts to help sort all of this out. You have to watch the green-eyed Tooks. LOL Oh, what a cliff-hanger with a ghost appearing in the middle of the trial! Now I am very, very glad that I have another chapter to read! Off to do just that right now!

Author's reply

Hehehe, yes, you aren't left hanging for long :-) I'm glad you like Chalcedony! Thank you GW :-)

Bodkin · 24 March 2007 · Chapter 17: Primary Sources

And your sources can't get much more primary than someone - or several someones - who were actually there at the time. Descendants of Lotho Sackville-Baggins and Ted Sandyman's sister. Well, that explains a lot. Although she must have brainwashed the boys, since even natural nastyness wouldn't have been enough to pervert them without a constant diet of how much better the Shire would have been without the vile Travellers stealing power back from Daddy Lotho. Definitely a good thing that Marjy and Athelas managed to save those sources - and find the secret notes. And that Macimas was prepared to read them out to the whole assembly. I wonder how Longo will react to the revelations.

Author's reply

They are indeed as primary as I could find ;-) I'm not sure if Daisy brainwashed them or just told them a lot about the families they came from. Having a daddy who had pretty much taken over the Shire and an uncle who had been in good with him could stir a lot of anger when mixed with the reduced circumstances the boys end up raised in. That might all be another story . . . The powers that be took care of things well with what got found and what got kept. I don't think Longo takes it very well, hehehe Thanks so much, Bodkin :-)

Bodkin · 24 March 2007 · Chapter 16: A Second Chance

A female? Well - sexism in the Shire is still rife, then! Would be, I suppose, with the Secretaries involved. (Right collection of Sir Humphrey Applebys, they are.) Longo is shouting enough to be pretty desperate - and his scheme seemed to be falling apart even before the arrival of the ghost. Of Travellers Past. But I don't think he'll get away with anything now!

Author's reply

Well, Tolkien did say things were mostly male oriented when it came to positions of authority in the Shire, siting Laura Baggins and Lalia Took as exceptions. I think exceptions would be made occasionally but I do think the males wielded the official power. It wasn't the twentieth century, and if you think of Middle-earth as a whole, a lack of women in power is a frequent complaint leveled at the Professor. No, Longo's goose is cooked. Thank you so much for raising an interesting point, Bodkin :-)

Cuthalion · 24 March 2007 · Chapter 17: Primary Sources

My goodness! I knew Frodo would be the first ghost to appear, I hoped I was right - and I was! And the secretaries were Lotho's offspring! My goodness again, this explains a lot. This explains in fact everything! *stares wide-eyed, babbling with excitement* OH WOW! I am speechless - at least nearly. Cúthalion

Author's reply

Cool, Cuthalion! You also figured on it being Frodo :-) I'm so glad you feel it explains everything, I had hoped it would. Thank you so much for all your kind words :-) I'm so glad it satisfied.

shirebound · 24 March 2007 · Chapter 17: Primary Sources

How intricate and brilliant, Pearl! This is quite a revelation. I'm so happy all four of the Travellers came to the "real" trial.

Author's reply

Thank you so much, dear shirebound! A brilliant :-) Thank you! They insisted, none of them wanted to miss it ;-)

Larner · 23 March 2007 · Chapter 16: A Second Chance

Oh, I hope it is Frodo himself! (I do love the idea of Frodo himself speaking to what he himself wrote, after all.) Although I won't be too disappointed if it were Merry the Magnificent, who would indeed properly speak before those gathered in Brandy Hall, who after all read the original Red Book as well as living what was written therein. Now, THIS is one witness Longo would desperately NOT wish to speak that day, and yet who has every right, as well as the full duty, to do so.

Author's reply

Hi Larner, You'll soon see who it is :-) I'm posting the next chapter today! Either way, you're right, this isn't making Longo very happy at all! Thank you :-)

Larner · 23 March 2007 · Chapter 15: The Winds of Change

Oh, I am proud of Macimas at the moment, able to see the contrast between his son's tone and his own, and finally realizing that the only voice Longo wished to see heard was his own--that he indeed heard only his own. It's plain the Caskburys are far too enamored of their own voices and their own wills. But it appears Eru and the Valar are seeing those voices stilled at last so the rest of the Shire might properly take its part in the chorus of the Song. Love Chalcy here.

Author's reply

Well said, Larner! I like to think that even when the Shire, as in the country occupied by towns and villages of hobbits, no longer exists (our time)that Eru and the Valar still watch over the hobbits. I like to think they are still with us even though they have to keep hidden :-) I'm glad you like Chalcedony. She has been one of those pleasant surprises in this story. I found myself wondering about Mac's mother, then I mentioned her a couple of times without even using a name. Next thing, I just had to fill out her character and give her a name. Thank you for your steady responses :-)

PIppinfan1988 · 23 March 2007 · Chapter 16: A Second Chance

My, my! This one was *filled* with cliffies, lol. Not really, but I'm waiting on pins and needles for either Athelas or Marjy to produce the item that will save the day. I say that, but I'm only guessing. Longo Caskbury actually had the audacity to try and poison the Master? That old boy needs a healthy slice of humble pie, and I think Chalcedony and the Traitors are just the hobbits to do it. :-) Now...which hobbit is appearing this time? ;-) Can't wait to see. :-) PF

Author's reply

Hehehe! I am a meany. Not really poison, just so he has to spend time somewhere other than the trial ;-) Longo will be getting his due, I promise. I won't make you wait too long to find out who materialized. Thank you so much, PippinFan, m'dear!

Cuthalion · 23 March 2007 · Chapter 16: A Second Chance

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the course things are taking now, and about Chalcedony's very "tookish" way to make sure that Longo behaves for the rest of the trial (that has finally become a real trial after the sad travesty of the forenoon...) And what did that villain give to the master? Stirred some castor oil under his luncheon? And finally you go and let one of the ghosts appear - and now I sit here with this cliffhanger, waiting anxiously to find out who it is. *deep sigh* What a marvelous tale. Brava! Cúthalion

Author's reply

Thank you, Cuthalion! Readers enjoying a story is what it's all about. I'm glad you have enjoyed this one. Macimas was given something of the sort, yes. Poor hobbit. But he's doing the best he can :-) You'll know soon!
