· Chapter 1: This New King
Your summary, from the start, drew me in. I think I'll really enjoy these little stories. This first one was very insightful, too-- though I've always respected Denethor as a leader, I do think Aragorn would be more of a people's man. Lovely first chapter. Now I'll go off and read the rest. :D
Author's reply
Thanks you for your comments, and I'm glad you're enjoying the vignettes. They're certainly fun to write. I think you've given a perfect description of what I meant to accomplish by writing Denethor into this first vignette. My intention was not to disparage Denethor but to show that he and Aragorn likely interacted quite differently with the common man. I think Aragorn's background as a ranger and his time spent at places like the Prancing Pony would have made him more of a "people's man" too.

Great chapter, Glad to see that the boy has some good qualities. Glad also that the innkeeper and the king all have bits or Arda to look after.
Author's reply
Yes, I thought I'd go a little easy on Carandol this time! He can't be all bad.

Author's reply
Thank you so much. I'm glad you discovered the Tales of the Innkeeper and that you're enjoying them. I'm not sure when the next installment will appear, but I'm sure the innkeeper will be back. It's hard to keep him quiet! ;)

· Chapter 7: Looking After Arda
This is one very sharp innkeeper! And he's getting a very valuable insight into the mind and habits of the king - and I think the king is appreciating the exchange. But then, a monarch who warmed his feet at the fire in the Prancing Pony would value the down-to-earthness of a good innkeeper as he runs his own microcosm of a kingdom.
Author's reply
I agree--Elessar's experiences as a ranger make him more appreciative of the innkeeper than a monarch might otherwise be. I certainly think that Elessar's time with the innkeeper is proving valuable to both parties. Thank you for your comments!

How truly sweet! Yes, we each have our own little bit of Arda to keep care of, and Aragorn Elessar is a most wise king indeed.
Lovely!
Author's reply
Yes, I'd think I'd be content to allow Elessar to handle things! Glad you enjoyed.

Yes, I’m happy to let him go on lookin’ after his corner of Arda while I go on lookin’ after mine. ’Reckon that’s what we’re all here for.
It really is just that simple, isn't it? :D
Author's reply
LOL. Well, yes, I like to think so. :) It's when I think I need to run the Universe that I start getting myself into trouble. Fortunately, the innkeeper is wiser than I am. ;)

· Chapter 6: A Fine Balance
Oh my, I did get a laugh out of the king, taking on the table with the cushion. That young lad needs to be brought out of his bad manners. How about a time spent being a minder to young children.
Author's reply
Yes, Carandol could certainly use a lesson on good manners. But I promise that I've made him a bit more likeable in the next vignette (written, but not posted yet--soon, I hope). Glad you got a laugh out of Elessar's frustration (or rather, on how he chose to vent it). Thank you for your comments!

I would have loved to have seen Elessar beating the life out of that table w/the cushion! A most enjoyable read.
PS - Who wouldn't have a crush on Aragorn?
Author's reply
LOL--yep, Silima's crush on Aragorn keeps getting a lot of comments. Seems many readers can identify! Glad you enjoyed this one, and thank you for taking the time to respond.

Even Aragorn Elessar has his limits, but he is experienced and wise enough to appreciate them. Lovely! And nice to see another addition to this one--it has been a time!
Author's reply
Yep, even Elessar can be pushed too far, but as you said, he knows how to handle his anger. It *has* been awhile since I've posted one of these vignettes, but I'm working on the next one now, so it should be up in a week or so. Thanks for your comments.

Poor Aragorn, having to deal with a young pain in the behind. Maybe he should leave him at the inn for awhile, to do dishes and such. Show him how other live.
Author's reply
LOL! Yep, that's a good idea! Maybe young Carandol would straighten up.

Yes, I do like this Innkeeper very much!
Retreating to cool his anger a bit is certainly the sort of thing the Aragorn we know would do. He knows how and when to use anger, and how to temper it to serve his purposes. I'm finding myself curious about this "Carondol"--why is his adolescent smugness and sullenness so pronounced? And why is he finding it so hard to behave civilly?
Very nice! I look forward to more!
Author's reply
Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you like the innkeeper; he's certainly an entertaining fellow! Ah, Carandol . . . well, we know from Stars Among Us that his father was killed at the Pelennor Fields, so he's angry over that. And of course he's a teenager, so you have all the natural rebelliousness thrown in. But is there more going on? Honestly I have no idea yet! When I wrote Stars Among Us, I didn't anticipate bringing Carandol back (any more than I thought I'd mention Silima again), but here he is again. Perhaps he'll turn up in a future vignette, and we'll learn more about this angry young man.

· Chapter 5: Closer Than We Think
Hi, Allee. Just reread this over at AA and thought I'd review here. I love these simple stories of a man getting a good, down-to-earth look at a King worth knowing. You have caught this character spot on - a salt of the earth type of guy who is continually astonished by Aragorn. And Aragorn is great - you've caught his regal side as well as the humble, compassionate side (thrown in with some royal temper now and then!) The innkeeper is indeed a wise man to know that evil is always with us. (And Carandol had better watch out! LOL) This is a great series!
Linda
Author's reply
Thanks, Linda. The innkeeper is definitely a "salt of the earth" type, and I suppose that part of what he finds most amazing about Aragorn is the King's complexity. Aragorn certainly has many sides, and it's been fun exploring them through the eyes of the innkeeper. Glad you're enjoying these vignettes!

Gosh, these are so great. The Innkeeper reminds me of Sam, or the Gaffer -- someone who sees with a simple eye and heart, but a very wise one.
Author's reply
Thank you. Yep, you're right--the innkeeper is a bit like Sam: a simple, but wise, heart. I'm glad you're enjoying these!

These are lovely little vignettes! I love your Innkeeper's voice. He's clearly a man who keeps his eyes open and his wits about him, and he's not afraid to let go of pre-concieved notions! Wonderful character, and lovely seeing Aragorn through his eyes!
Author's reply
Thank you. I'm so glad you're enjoying these vignettes; they're a ball to write! You have quite a good take on the innkeeper. He certainly does keep his wits about him, and I've thoroughly enjoyed viewing Aragorn through his eyes.

· Chapter 1: This New King
Yes--the new King of Gondor's habit of smoking a pipe would indeed be likely to corrupt all of Gondor, wouldn't it? Love the innkeeper deciding this King is indeed far different from his predecessor.
Author's reply
I'm glad you agree that pipe-smoking was bound to come to Gondor when Elessar did. I wanted to stick to canon, but I just can't imagine that Aragorn wouldn't have brought certain habits with him, and those habits had to have influenced the public!

Guess it’s just as exhausting being a king as it is being an innkeeper. I reckon those satin sheets and big beds don’t do a man much good if he never gets to lie on them.
What a marvelous insight. :D
Author's reply
Thanks! Yes, the innkeeper is prone to moments of wonderful insight!
