Wow i had all those chapters to read!what a excellent fic this is it's keeping me glued to the computer, loved the chase and battle with the orcs and the bears and Thorongil coming to the rescue.Radagast iv'e always been interested in him as you don't hear much about him in many fics but you have bought him to life for us readers cheers.I also liked Elrond and Glorfindel's reactions to Estel's dilerium i thought Elrond was going to drop dead on the spot and Glofindel's temper wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of him LOL.Please keep writing this wonderful piece thanks Fawlen.

Author's reply

Thank you, Fawlwen. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the story. The story is in fact finished, but the last few chapters are still being beta-read, so I am putting the chapters out in dribs and drabs until they are all corrected. However, I hope to have the entire story posted by early next week. I'm glad you like "my" Radagast. I've always thought him to be an interesting character and was sorry Tolkien didn't write more about him and his role as an ithron/istar. Glad you're enjoying him.

EllyBaggins · 9 August 2006 · Chapter 6: Moon Over Rhosgobel

another great chapter! i especially liked glorfindel and elrond in this; their friendship is usually not portrayed that well, but you write them almost like some people write aragorn and legolas, which i love! And estel's reaction to finding out what he said to his adar was brilliant, it strongly demonstrates the love that is really between them. oh, an Gwaihir sending a message to elrond about taking better care of estel? Loved it! I'm wondering if the story of the twins nearly getting estel killed is actually somewhere in these archives, because it sounds like it would be a really good read!

Author's reply

Glad you are enjoying the story and that you think that I've portrayed the friendship between Elrond and Glorfindel well. I don't know if there is such a story in the archives about the twins almost getting Estel killed, the idea just came to me as the last time Estel ever heard Glorfindel call anyone a son of a balrog. Yet, it does sound like it might be a real good read, doesn't it?

I have one word for this stoy so far: Extraordinary. I am enjoying this immensely. I await your next chapter with bated breath.

Author's reply

Extraordinary! Wow! High praise, indeed. I'm glad you are enjoying this story so much. I certainly had fun writing it. And don't worry, I won't keep you waiting long (I wouldn't want you to turn blue) *grin*.

EllyBaggins · 8 August 2006 · Chapter 5: Bad Ithil Rising

wow...i am really enjoying this story! the characterisations are wonderful and i am loving the aragorn angst! i regret that i can't say much more right now as i am in a rush but i can't wait to read on!

Author's reply

Thanks EllyBaggins. I'm glad you are having a great time with this. I look forward to more in-depth comments from you later.

grumpy · 8 August 2006 · Chapter 2: Misty Mountain High

Oh, poor Estel, you fell off a cliff. They really should keep you away from cliff. Butt how are you suppose to know it is there, if you can not see if.

Elflingimp · 8 August 2006 · Chapter 5: Bad Ithil Rising

EEk!!! The descriptions made me sick, but how could you leave Estel dying? More cruel cliffies! I actually enjoyed it(I know you warned us but those warnings always seem to invite me to look to see exactly what it is) I will be waiting on the edge of my seat(with my laptop) waiting for more)

Author's reply

The descriptions made ME sick and I was writing them. This was a difficult chapter to write on several levels and it was emotionally draining. Yet, it needed to be written. And don't worry, you won't have long to wait.

Calenlass Greenleaf · 8 August 2006 · Chapter 5: Bad Ithil Rising

Ouch. Poor Estel and Elrond. Tempers are running high...I wonder what will happen next.

Author's reply

Yes, things are looking nasty but like they say, it ain't over till the fat hobbit sings.... or something like that.

eliza61 · 8 August 2006 · Chapter 5: Bad Ithil Rising

This story is great!! Talk about suspense, I love it. I truly enjoy your Glorifindel and Elrond. They behave as I always thought close friends would behave, fights and all. Now what in the name of Arda is wrong with Estel!!

Author's reply

I'm glad you are enjoying the story, suspense and all. And I'm glad you enjoy my portrayal of Glorfindel and Elrond and that I have their behavior towards one another down. Friends fight, even close friends, and these two have had millennia to practice. As for what's wrong with Estel, well....

Anonymous · 7 August 2006 · Chapter 4: Orcs Get In Your Eyes

Wow. I'm impressed. Things happen so fast in your story, but I'm glad they do. Never a dull moment, LOL So that's where Estel got his name "Thorongil". I find it interesting, the way you were able to work that into the story. What language is the name anyway? Sindarin or Westron? (I could never figure it out.) I really enjoy the fast updates. :-)

Author's reply

Well, fast-paced stories are what made old-time serials so popular and I try to have something happen every other chapter to keep the reader interested. Thorongil is Sindarin meaning "Star of the Eagle" or "Eagle-star" depending on how you want to read it. Glad you're enjoying the story. There's more to come.

Nilmandra · 7 August 2006 · Chapter 3: Haven't Got Time for the Naeg

I feel bad laughing at what is a rather serious moment, but I am so enjoying seeing references to my stories woven in here that I am like a gleeful little kid on Christmas morning. As for poor Estel, I think you are taking the sum of everything that could happen or could go wrong, and including it! Getting sick from the rain, falling off the cliff, I am looking forward to goblins, as they are sure to make an appearance. :D

Author's reply

I am afraid I was shameless in pilfering from other writers, including you, but it was a way of saluting other writers whom I admire and also bringing this story into the wider "Middle-earth universe" that other writers have created. I remembered the "lost" scene mentioned but not actually described in your story and decided to "fill in the gaps", so to speak. Glad you are enjoying "seeing yourself" in this story.

lwarren · 7 August 2006 · Chapter 3: Haven't Got Time for the Naeg

*hums a little Carly Simon* Whew! I was very concerned about the injuries that Aragorn might suffer from his fall. Luckily that tree was there to slow him down some! I loved the way Aragorn was encouraged to apologize to Mithfaron for not listening! Once again, the use of the herbs was so interesting, and I AM taking notes! "And will someone turn off this thrice-bedamned rain!" I LOVE IT! Glorfindel and his direct line to the One in charge of the weather! I'll just bet everyone was standing there with their mouths hanging open! And it's nice to see that Elrond was not always the in-control, informed elf he has become at present. (Gee, that was a rather convoluted statement.) Glorfindel is so good with Aragorn, the way he is encouraging him and trying to build his confidence, especially in light of all the bad luck lately! The little exchange at the very end between Elrond and Glorfindel is priceless - very funny! At least they are in the foothills and safe for the time being (of course 'safe' is a relative term in a story like this...) Great chapter, Fiondil! *trots off singing a medley of John, Carly, and Cass and Co.* linda :-)

Author's reply

Those of you who have been reading Nilmandra's "History" stories might recognize the inspiration for the "lost" scene that Glorfindel describes. Elrond's reference to Elrohir's foot, of course, is from her "Glorfindel's Folly". I found as I was writing this story that I was obliquely referring to the tales written by others whom I've read and enjoyed on SOA.I had a lot of fun writing this and Alassiel said she was falling out of her chair when she got to this scene, especially hearing Glorfindel swear.

lwarren · 7 August 2006 · Chapter 2: Misty Mountain High

I'm seeing a pattern with these titles... :-) They've had me humming a little tune as I read the chapter! And what a great chapter it is! Poor Aragorn - never ever been sick, but picks up a nasty cold from being exposed to some really icky weather! Luckily, he has his own doctor along with him, and a pretty good nurse, too. I am thoroughly enjoying the use of the herbs here, along with their elvish names. That is so cool! And the Quenya lullabye Glorfindel sings is wonderful. Of course, then you had to let the poor mortal fall off a cliff! Aragorn is really having a no good, very bad day! He falls off the cliff, and you leave us hanging on one! Very good, Fiondil, very good indeed! LOL linda

Author's reply

Glad you're enjoying this Linda. The hardest part of writing this was coming up with song titles, at least, after the first one. I really had to dig into my repetoire for some of them. Trying to find appropriate herbs that were easily translated into Sindarin was also hard, but fun, as well. Keep reading, Aragorn hasn't reached Mirkwood yet!

lwarren · 7 August 2006 · Chapter 1: Rainy Days and Orithiliath

I really am enjoying this story, starting with the 'squabbling friends' relationship that Elrond and Glorfindel seem to share! Loved the discussion about when they should have left and whose fault it was ! LOL Also, I like your portrayal of Aragorn - I got to thinking about the fact that as one of the Dunadain, even at 25 he would be fairly young. An adult - but a very young adult. He really wouldn't be a seasoned, mature warrior until much later in his life, would he? That makes the fact that he is looking for a good, close friend very moving to me. He wants a 'brother of the heart', not a mentor or a casual companion. I am so looking forward to this trip and hope Aragorn finds his gwador...and Glorfindel finds his umbrella! LOL linda (Good for us that you finally got Internet in China...now we get to read your great stories!) :-)

Author's reply

Thanks Linda, I really appreaciate your comments. I had fun writing the interaction between Elrond and Glorfindel in this scene, which was the first scene I saw but had no idea where it was going until Estel showed up. Yes, Aragorn is an adult, but I remember so was I at 25, but I wouldn't say I was really mature, and certainly I still looked to my parents and other "real" adults for guidance even though I was on my own and living my own life. I imagine it would've been much the same with Aragorn, especially with his relationship with the elves. And it's good for me that I finally got internet in China, too...now I can read Everyone eles's great stories! I was suffering from SOA withdrawal. Not a pretty picture.

Calenlass Greenleaf · 7 August 2006 · Chapter 3: Haven't Got Time for the Naeg

*Breathes a sigh of relief* So Estel's going to be all right. I didn't think you would injure him THAT badly :P That story about Elrond and Glorfindel was funny---especially the beam of light. *g*

Author's reply

Yeah, this was a fun scene to write, although I wasn't sure how to write it at first until I happened to glance up at a poster hanging in my living room that has the caption "What do you mean, we're lost?" When I saw that, I could hear Elrond saying it and all of a sudden I was in the scene and I just started writing it. I thought the beam of light was a nice touch, myself.

Elflingimp · 7 August 2006 · Chapter 3: Haven't Got Time for the Naeg

Very interesting chapter, its hard to believe old Elrond could make a mistake, I am also finding it very educational learning about all these herbs.

Author's reply

Hey, even Elrond had to have his nappies changed, so it stands to reason he grew into his wisdom just like the rest of us. Glad you're enjoying this story.

Elflingimp · 6 August 2006 · Chapter 2: Misty Mountain High

I am really liking this story,I knew there was gonna be some trouble,I can still feel Estel falling! What an evil cliffhanger! Please hurry up and post more Im sure he cant wait to get to the bottom!

Author's reply

Hi Elflingimp, glad you are liking this story so far. As the story is complete (the last few chapters are being beta-read as we speak) there won't be too much of a gap between chapters. In fact, I hope to post a new chapter every day (like an old-fashioned serial), so you won't have to fall for too long.

Calenlass Greenleaf · 6 August 2006 · Chapter 2: Misty Mountain High

A cold and some broken bones? By the time they reach Mirkwood, he's going to be half dead, so it seems. Only the second chapter, and there's already a cliffhanger--can't wait for the next one.

Author's reply

Or as my beta-reader put if when she read this chapter "á real cliff-faller!". Don't worry, I don't kill off my main characters too soon, no fun in that.

Noor · 6 August 2006 · Chapter 2: Misty Mountain High

A very promising start.....really enjoyable and you capture a young Aragon beautifully. I hope he survives his fall.........can't wait for the next chapter! Noor

Author's reply

Thanks Noor. I was afraid I might have made Aragorn seem too young, but it's been a loooong time since I was 25 so it's hard to remember what it was like being that age — an adult, but not quite adult enough, as I recall.

Nilmandra · 6 August 2006 · Chapter 1: Rainy Days and Orithiliath

I'm so glad you are able to continue writing and posting, Fiondil! I like this look at Imladris, with Elrond and Glorfindel being very real with each other, with the bits about jealousy, and the way Estel/Aragorn fits/doesn't fit all the places he goes. He has roles, but not necessarily his own place in the world. Elrond and Glorfindel are bound to be amusing. Looking forward to more.

Author's reply

I'm glad I am able to post as well. It took three weeks to get internet service here in China but finally I'm online again. Life is good. I tried to make the relationship between Elrond and Glorfindel very real; after all they've known each other for two ages, and whatever master-servant relationship they may have, they are also friends and can tease each other. The same with the other people in Imladris. And Estel/Aragorn is just young enough to feel a bit insecure about himself, I think. Stay tuned for more.

grumpy · 6 August 2006 · Chapter 1: Rainy Days and Orithiliath

Great start to your story, I love how Estel does not mind the rain, he is just happy to be going somewhere new. And he is still looking for someone to be his friend. Had to laugh about the 5 year old wanting his nana and ada to have a baby brother for him.

Author's reply

Glad you are enjoying the story so far. Yes, I had fun writing about 5-year-old Estel wondering where his own brother is; a typical response of younger siblings. I look forward to hearing your comments of later chapters.

fawlen · 6 August 2006 · Chapter 1: Rainy Days and Orithiliath

I'm loving this story!Estel coming of age is one of my favorite subjects as well as when he first encounters Legolas. Love the banter between Elrond and Glorfindel as well as the Estel teasing done by everyone. Please update soon, cheers Fawlen.

Author's reply

Thanks, Fawlen. I'm glad you are enjoying the story so far. I thought an Aragorn-coming-of-age story would be fun to write, and part of the fun is writing (and reading)the banter between the characters. You know they care about each other and yet can tweak each other without anyone taking offense, especially Elrond and Glorfindel who have been friends for an Age and a half (at least). I will be posting chapters on a regular basis, so stay tuned.
