Ooooh! Your Ferumbras is so much worse than mine. Mine is only a selfish fool, yours is a selfish *******! He really did deserve to get punched!
And Ferumbras really should know better than to be so discourteous to the Head of another Family!
My suspicions about Degger are getting stronger...
Author's reply
Hullo! I thought you'd be at ELF this weekend! For me, it's either Scotland or Elf...well, you know my choice. :-)
LOL--yeah...that he is! I have more planned for his skinny little backside in the next chapter. Well, in chapter 6, I should say.
Knowing you, lol--if we were playing the "Hot&Cold" game, I'd speculate that you're flame-lickin'-hot right now. ;-) After all, I'm sure that the question I asked you a LONG time ago has been resurfacing. ;-) I still can't give you the credit you so well deserve because although you and I might know where this is heading, others don't, and it may ruin the plot for them. Like Paladin, I'm bursting at the seams to tell, though!
Thank you for reading!

Ooh the plot definitely thickens. I like the way that high quality silver looks inferior to mithril.
Author's reply
Hehehe, I would think that mithril is much better. Nothing less than the best for the Tooks. ;-)
Yes, and the plot will thicken a bit more shortly. :-)

Change is in the air? - Yes and for more than just Degger I suspect. I am glad that Pal stands up for himself.

Yes, there is a lot of change due in this tale, and we shall soon see. :-)

Whoa! That was certainly intense. Ferumbras sure has his nerve. I'm living for the moment when someone does take him down a peg or two. And I'm starting to suspect who just might end up being the one who does it.
Now I'm getting really curious about this life-changing thing Paladin learned. I think I know some of it but not the details. I'm going to e-mail you and speculate, even though I dought you'll let any hints slip.
I begged you to update, and I'm really glad you did, but now I want MORE! I don't know if I can wait almost two more weeks to find out what happens next.
Oh, and I loved Pippin and the way he waited on Degger to finish the test. That was so sweet and understanding of him.
Thanks for updating.
GT.
Author's reply
Oh, I do think Addie is correct in his assessment. :-) And we shall soon see.
As for your pm guess...lol, you can keep beating those ideas with an ugly stick! None of those ugly ideas about Ferumbras is it at all, though I did toy with something that I'll tell you later after the tale is finished. Paladin really isn't so sure yet about anything. He only suspects, but is curious and wants to get to the bottom of the matter. Sorry, can't give away any more. (*evil, wicked laughter*)
LOL, I know it isn't nice to keep people dangling on a string for long, so some things will trickle out in the next chapter. ;-) I hope to post it before the weekend.
I thought Pippin's deed was a sweet touch, too--just like he is. :-)
Thank you for reading!

The jeweller is asking about the watch and Degger can't be his real name? I sense a mystery!
Silly Pippin. An example of doing anything to get attention? Good think Paladin is wise and kind. He did a pretty good job of explaining - but I don't know how much Pippin registered. Not an easy transition, this. Not for anyone.
Author's reply
It is true; I am trying my best to write at least an *interesting* mystery, lol. I'm not giving away anything that I haven't already said; keep your eye on the watch...and a few other things. ;-)
Pippin is still several months away from fourteen--not that he will suddenly get out of bed on his fourteenth birthday and think like an adult, but he's still somewhat of a child, and reasons as such. Even the most intelligent person will at times act upon emotions, and Pippin is used to having his father's undivided attention. He will eventually adjust. :-)

Once again you've created a great chapter. Poor Paladin. He is so being taken advantage of. He's going to have a lot of work to do to staighten out the mess Ferumbras has made of things.
You do such a great job with the parent-child relationship. I think Pippin may now understand just a little what his father is going through. And, no, I don't buy his story that he ate all those sweets just because his dad wasn't there to stop him. Nice try young Took. The guilt trip is the oldest ploy in the book.
Now I'm anxious to find out what Degger's real name is. My guess is that once they learn that, they'll find out a lot more about his history.
Thanks.
GT.
Author's reply
Yes, that darned Ferumbras! Oh, but more is coming on his wee storyline. ;-)
What a lovely compliment! Thank you. :-) I won't empty my Samsonite luggage here, but lets just say that I live vicariously through these two characters. All children are masters at manipulation, and Pippin is no exception...in fact, he excels in it. LOL, not really, but he knows his way around adults and his peers.
Oh...his real name is coming up. And it's not a "made up" name, either. Well, *Degger* is, but the name *his* name is based on, isn't made up. I got it from a list of boy's names of a Germanic origin. You'll see later in the story. ;-)
Thanks for reading! Have fun in New York!

"Tis a hard lesson for our lad to bear, not having as much of his Father's time. *sigh* But Paladin will try his best, I'm sure :)
Well done! Well done!
Author's reply
It is hard...on both. Pippin does need his father right now Paladin is having to divide himself between his work and his family, and *he* is finding out that this isn't easy, either. Paladin's challenge will be in having to figure out how to harness Pippin's excess energy...which is how I think Frodo got to be a "regular warren" while living in Buckland.
In the chapters to come, all of this will play into the plot a little bit. :-)

I come home from work and find another lovely chapter! Excellent! I had to grin at Degger trying to decide what to admit to when Paladin asked about Pippin. It can't be easy having a friend that is always into something! I do hope Degger does well on his exams. ALso looking forward to more answers about a certain watch!
Author's reply
LOL, no it isn't easy! I think it was hard for the young fella. No doubt he was feeling a wee bit torn by his loyalty to Pippin and also to Paladin. Hmmm...that certain watch...keep watching it! :-D

Hmm...I'm beginning to have a hunch of sorts about Degger. But I won't say anything. If I'm wrong, I won't be embarrassed, and if I'm right, I don't want to give away a spoiler. LOL!
I liked Paladin's conversation with Pippin. Poor Pip. He really does miss all the time he's had with his father before. But it is time he began to understand.
And I am so curious as to what *Paladin* is up to!
Author's reply
ROTFL! I would wager that your Plot Antennae are probably very close--given your history of guesses in other tales. ;-) We shall see. :-)
Yeah, poor Pip! He does miss having his papa at beck and call. He's on the verge of leaving childhood behind, yet in some ways he still is a child.

Poor Degger. Always feeling that people are thinking the worst of him because of his past.
I'm wondering what that letter said. I have a feeling it has something to do with Degger's graduation present.
Pippin really does overdo things a lot. I think I would have been tempted to say, "I told you so," if I were in Degger's place. I just hope Pippin feels up to taking his final exam. It would not be a good thing for him to be the only one not to graduate this time.
Looking forward to more.
GT.
Author's reply
Degger is rarity; his background comes from the *working-class*, he speaks as the working-class, although that will gradually change just a smidgen as the years pass by, given his *education*. Mr. Mat *does* like Degger, however, after much research while writing Riches to Rags, I had learned that orphaned children weren't exactly looked upon favourably by most folk "back then". Not everyone was like that, of course, but generally speaking they were. It was my fault for not elaborating more on that issue, and I will correct that, but Mat does like Degger *because* he is mannerly, soft spoken and gentle, *in spite of* him having no parents to guide him in that area of learning. At least, that is Mat's thinking. To compensate a bit for my error, I will tell you this: Keep Degger's manners in the back of your memory for now--that issue just may reappear much later as a minor part of the plot. ;-)
LOL, you and a few others are wondering about that letter! That will unfold in the next few chapters without the telling of contents. ;-)
Oh, that would be terrible if he didn't graduate after all the work he did the past nine months or so! LOL, he'd be furious! No, Pip will graduate, but we know that's a given with his level of intelligence. :-)
Thank you for reading and taking the time to leave a lovely review!

Author Reply: Ah--I think I missed your point, but you got a whole other answer in return, lol. So sorry--I'm guessing you're referring to Degger responding with "My dad didn't pinch it"? I don't think he feels that way too often, only when someone says something mean. In this case, he just misunderstood Tooter.
If I *still* missed your point, just pm me, or we can discuss it next time we talk on the phone. :-)
Have a great week!

So many questions about Degger's watch! I hope the next part is posted soon because I can't imagine what is going on with that watch. I like Mat very much by the way. Hope he turns up in this story again somewhere. I am also wondering if Degger will be forced to tell Paladin about that candy. My but I have lots of questions tonight, don't I? Love the story and can't wait for more!
Author's reply
Hullo!! :-) LOL, that watch does have a lot to do with the story, so keep an eye on it. ;-) I rather like Mat, too. I've used him in so many stories without so much as a slight description, so I gave him both looks and a personality in this tale. Glad you like him! He's the Thain's carriage driver, so we may yet see him again here...or in another story, too! "Lots of questions" is good, lol, and most will be answered soon. :-)

Shame about the watch - although it sounds as if the accident has contributed conveniently to some cunning plan.

*This* looks *immensely* promising, and I am going to follow it with great eagerness!
I loved the part about how cold it was when Degger sat on the shovel, LOL! And his "forcing" Pippin to eat the freshly baked biscuits. *chuckle*
Hmm...wonder what the Thain's been up to now? Your Ferumbras is even *more* devious than mine...
Author's reply
Why, thank you! LOL, I'm writing it just as eagerly. Like Riches/Rags, this tale has so many bits and pieces important to the plot that even *I'm* getting dizzy trying to keep up with them! The challenge of it all is keeping me on my toes. ;-)
LOL, I rather enjoyed inserting those bits, too!

Aaahhh. That ending was so sweet. I can so relate to Eglantine's feelings.
This looks like it's going to be an interesting story.
That beginning was funny. I was aftaid Degger had really been hurt until he made his comment about never having children.
Now you've got me curious about their gifts, and what's going to happen to Degger's watch. I also wonder what that meeting the lads witnessed the end of was about.
Update soon!

I know you can--the Wee One is getting closer with every year. :-( Never fear, though--no matter how old she gets, she'll always be your baby. :-)
*So far*, I don't see anyone getting injured...but then, I'm only on chapter 6 and the ball is just starting its roll.
Hehehe...one of the gifts is part of the plot, so I can't delve into them at this point.
The meeting was nothing too big, we shall see some of its purpose in a chapter or two.

I enjoyed the way Pippin avoided answering questions about exactly what he and Degger had been doing but even more, I enjoyed the fact that Paladin encouraged it. LOL
So very glad to be back in the Tooklands with your Hobbits! Looking forward to much more of this!
Author's reply
Yeah, Pippin is learning a lot about skirting the issues if he needs to. No need to get in trouble if one can avoid it. :-)
Paladin has got his hands tied up at the moment with learning his own job, so as long as his child is in one piece, no broken bones, nothing espensive broken in the process...he's willing to allow one or two things slip. We will probably see a little bit more in this area between those two.
