One more thought. Gentle Hobbit is a great name for you. You certainly have a gentle heart.

This was amazing and very touching. I am always blown away by the gift for story telling that Ringers have. I am so greatful for the MEFAwards. If it were not for them, I would have missed out on many, many wonderful tales. Thank you for writing this. I can't begin to tell you how much I loved it.
Larner · 20 November 2006 · Chapter 1
I managed to miss this one before, but it is well, well worth the reading. Definitely our Pippin and our Frodo, each afraid of failing, and yet accepting their own limitations at the moment. And I love the promise of the spring to come Pippin was able to give Frodo in his pain and to spite the fear that he wouldn't see the season actually come.

very moving and it seemed as if I was hearing Tolkien speaking through you. It was if reading one of his chapters.
Author's reply
Thank you, GirlofRing. I'm glad that the story touched you.

You can always get me with Frodo H/C - I am such a sucker for it I'll even read bad H/C - though I will never find that from you! LOL! Thank you for this!

"I am such a sucker for it I'll even read bad H/C -" Whew! I was getting worried there for a minute. And then your reassurance came! *grin* I'm glad you liked it.

Like everyone else in the 2006Frodofic Challenge on LiveJournal, I was blown away by this fic. The first thing that struck me was the terseness of your third-person voice, almost reporting the action. Then the night wears on and Frodo speaks to Aragorn, we see the depths of his bravery and willingness to endure, as well as his care of the other hobbits, so unused to violence. The comfort for the hurt is wonderfully written; the 'voice' relaxes and allows us to move more closely into the story. The end scene is lovely, reminding us why we love hobbits so. Congratulations on a brilliantly thought-out, well-reasoned, and emotionally involving story.

Thank you! What lovely words of praise. It does seem that this story has struck a chord with quite a few people, and I just feel thrilled that it has done so. Thank you again.

Wow! Excellent job, GentleHobbit! You managed to sustain characterization despite the build up of tension and ensuing horror that were both vivid and realistic - some feat. This is NOT the kind of story I'd normally read but I couldn't not do so, once I opened it. You were right to put up the warning, not because of gratuitous gore but because of the convincing and heart-rending situation you depicted so well. Was gripping my hands together tightly as I read. I hate to say thank you for hurting Frodo like that (actually it could have happened even while he was wearing the vest, in canon)but... it did after all enhance the characters. Frodo was awesome, just as I would imagined. So, thank you for writing and sharing this!
Author's reply
Thank you very much for your thoughtful review. I wondered for a while about that warning, but when I read Story of Arda's statement that the website was meant to be read by teenagers, I thought that it would be best. And... I found it a bit intense myself! I'm not sure that this scenario would have happened if Frodo had been wearing the vest. Tolkien described one arrow actually bouncing off him because of the vest, and even the cave troll's spear didn't impale him even if it did drive some of the rings through the undercoat into his skin. But either way, you are "welcome" for Frodo's being hurt! And again, thank you for your kind review.

Wonderful! Realistic angst and just enough comfort at the end.
Author's reply
I'm glad you liked it! Poor Frodo -- he is the whipping boy of Middle-earth, I think.
Andrea · 12 May 2006 · Chapter 1
That's my Frodo! Very courageous, but always denying it and more concerned for the well-being of others than his own. Some time ago, after reading one of her stories, I told Lily that in *that* story Pippin was the right person in the right place at the right time. She replied, that with Pippin that is *always* the case. Well, I think, she's right ;-)
Author's reply
Not everyone can be the stoic, "brave" warrior. Many have strengths that are not the traditional kind. Or perhaps they are, but are overlooked. Pippin has those strengths.
Antane · 12 May 2006 · Chapter 1
Hannon le for this! I love the TLC Frodo gets from his Pip. I think I would be the same way and run away. When my oldest nephew was only about 5 or 6 his father had to take out a sliver from his hand and there was so much pain in that room, so much crying and begging not to have more pain, that I just had to leave. I stood it as long as I could and then left so I understand what Pippin felt. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
Author's reply
It's pretty nasty stuff, I know. I almost prefer to have the pain myself than to watch someone else go through it! I'm glad that you liked the TLC. This story was rather heavy on the 'h', so I'm glad the 'c' worked!

Oh, this is my favorite kind of story. Thank you so much for writing and sharing it with us. I am so excited to finally meet you!!! But, I must warn you, I tend to be a bit...exuberant, which can be a bit overwhelming for most. When I meet you I will be so excited I may come off a bit nutsy. It's funny because I have a phobia of people. I truly dislike humans, preferring the company of my dog. This does not transend to my hobbit family, however. I do worry needlessly about silly things. I am already worried that I will be too tired to take in every single moment of our gathering. And that it will be too short a time to be together, and that I will be very depressed at our parting. Silly things, that will only try to take away from the joy of our reunion. I won't let them. Once we are together I will be living for the moment until we part. Love to you and I can only say one word in parting...SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

I really think this story is one of your best, GH, and that's saying a lot. This is the courageous, perceptive Frodo I love so much, surrounded by his supportive Fellowship. You've really captured the characters wonderfully here. Everyone does their best, most particularly Pippin, who discovers that whatever one can give -- even if it's just the smallest loving gesture -- can be enough.

Thank you, Janet! Your lovely review has left me "purring pleased" as my Mum would say. Writing this story has turned out to be such a rewarding experience and I'm so glad that I decided to take on the Spring Challenge.
