· Chapter 13: Out on the Cobbled Streets
This is where I started reading this tale, and now I've returned to it. It kept me from doing anything else - like homework, ironing, cooking, controlling school work - but reading, reading, reading.
Thank you so much. (I've already reviewed the newest chapter in your LJ). I can hardly wait for more!
Author's reply
Cuthalion dear, thank you so much for all your comments! I have this image of you sitting down, reading a chapter ... getting into the story ... oh no! ....ahh! Poor Frodo! Poor Merry! Oh, poor Pippin ... and by your last review, you are sweating, bug-eyed and gripping your computer screen with white-knuckled hands. (Which is my normal state when reading angsty fanfiction). I am sorry that "Shadows" is keeping you from RL, but it will always be there, won't it? Enjoy - and thank you again for your generous words.

Pippin's situation is getting increasingly worse, as it seems. And he won't be able to pretend being nine-fingered for long, I fear! Now I really start to worry...

· Chapter 11: Out of a House of Flame
Oh dear - poor lad.
Pippin grit his teeth, determined not to hinder the orc carrying him like a sack of grain over its shoulder. Each stride forward was a stride away from Frodo. Tears of grief and terror merged in his eyes and ran down his upside-face, lodging in his hair like little pricks of ice. For Frodo, he thought as his face bumped against the creature’s stinking back. For Frodo.
Which - of course - reminds me of that heartbreaking moment in ROTK when Aragorn said the same thing. What a great tale this is.
Author's reply
Which is exactly what I was shooting for... that scene in RotK brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. Thank you for mentioning it! (hugs!)

No time to tell you why this is simply great - everwhelming - awesome - thrilling--- Chose whatever you want, it is all true.

· Chapter 9: Down Devious Paths
Good gracious. Sam, carried around while he's not allowed to walk (and I don't dare to think about what Aragorn will have to say to this clever misinterpretation of his order!), Pippin, hauled away by orcs in search of bloody revenge, and a wounded Frodo, lying in a burning house.
*wipes the sweat from her brow*
And if you spy any misspellings in one of my reviews, blame it on your tale. That enormous thrill makes me clumsy. *grins*)

He swallowed hard. “Here I am.”
And her I sit, swallowing hard, too, and trying not to cry. What a brave Knight of Gondor - the smallest perhaps, but his courage makes him a true giant. And what has happened with Frodo's broken ribs? One of them has pirced the lung, hasn't it? *is deeply worried*
What an awesome storyteller you are.

· Chapter 6: Amongst the Scattered Stones
Oh oh. But what I like most of this thrilling chapter - aside from Aragorn's royal rage - is the fact that you don't keep Frodo completely helpless, even in his anguish, pain, fear and weakness. There are too many stories out there where Frodo is nothing like a limp bundle, constantly unconscious, having been unconscious for days or faiting soon. Here we have a fighter. Thank you so much for this!

“I do mean it … and I don’t. I know you didn’t force him to do it, and only someone as strong and pure and loving as Frodo could have succeeded.” His shoulders sagged a little more. “I know you didn’t want him to go through that, but someone had to do it, and Frodo was the best choice. But a part of me won’t ever forgive you for making this happen to him.”
Yes. Oh yes. And how good I understand this quiet rage, and how very well it fits with the image I have of Merry. Strong, stubborn, loving, with a fiery heart. Absolutely marvelous - not only this, but the whole chapter. *bows before thee*

Oops.
Poor Pippin. After all he had done, to have his ruse detected!
But--but maybe it's a good thing in a way--if it's really Frodo they need, then they won't be wanting to leave so quickly. But--then they also will be wanting to torture Pippin all the sooner.
Merry's rescuers were a surprise to me! I truly thought it would be Legolas and Gimli, but then when he thought the "two voices were as one" it dawned on me who it might be. I love Elladan and Elrohir's saving Merry. And Merry's reactions were perfect--he's so fierce! I adore fierce Merry!
Best of all, they have a live bad guy for Aragorn to question. Like to see him *try* lying to the King!
And poor Frodo. I haven't forgotten him either...
Author's reply
Good for you, Dreamflower, picking up on that hint before 'the reveal' as they say in the movie business. Coming from a background of 'frontier justice' (growing up in pioneer Alaska), I think the best way of getting information from this villian is to lock him in a room with Merry. He'd be screaming out information in thirty seconds. Of course, I suppose Aragorn will be civilized about it...

“We must find him,” Gandalf said tensely. “He will not last long in his condition. And there are other dangers out there than exposure. He could fall down a flight of stairs, or off a balustrade, or what if the rumours we heard are true—“

Anyway, thank goodness the twins showed up when they did and I love that the man is afraid of Merry just as much as the elves. And now Pippin is found out as not being Frodo. I fear what they'll do to him now, knowing that he tricked them. It would be too good to hope that they'll let him go.

Love the warrior-horse!
Aragorn told us where there is shouting and swearing, there is usually a hobbit.
*snork*
Chilling orcs... poor Pippin. (Did you ever read "A Took By Any Other Name", per chance, or are we merely on the same frequency? Tenderising their meat, indeed...)
and now his ruse is discovered. They have no use for him now! (or do they?)
Author's reply
*snork* yourself - I think we share the same sort of humor, Lindelea. Heaven help us. Or perhaps our poor readers...
I haven't yet read "A Took By Any Other Name," yet but it is on my list. I have made a solemn vow not to start the next long-form story (torturing the hobbits and the Fellowship on Caradhras) until I catch up on my fanfiction. I've found I can write or beta or read, enjoy, and review, but doing two of these activities at once is beyond me. Is that the sign of limited intellectual abilities or simply intense focus?

OH Budgielover! You really are killing me here! I'm so glad to see Frodo again. His parts are my favorites. And poor Sam! Oh I wish I could just hug him and tell him everything will be alright because I'm assuming *pointed stare at you* that everything will be alright. Ahem.
And don't worry about Real Life getting in the way. I've left my dear readers on a mean cliff as well. My confounded computer went dead on me. I could have chucked it out of a very, very, very high widnow. I've lost all fanfictoin and my novel. But I suppose the Lord has a plan for everything, so...maybe...I don't know. It's alright now. I guess.
I just read your bio...I love roses too! I want to plant some climbing roses on this brick gateway that is in my yard. :) In the spring, of course. It will be experimental, and I desperately wish Sam were here to help me! He's such a good gardener, adn everything I plant...well...dies. ANyway, I'll go now, and stop leaving you these long reviews. Oh and the story is so wonderful, that only Elven words could describe it. So, hannon le, mell nin! Namarie! God Bless!
Yours,
Frodo Baggins
Author's reply
Frodo Baggins my dear, your review of Chpt. 13 of "Shadows" quite overwhelmed me with its generousity. You are so kind, especially when under such pressure. I can't imagine losing a whole novel, and your fanfiction. I guess you can rebuild much of that from the archives (I bought a 100GB external hard drive because I couldn't imagine losing my collection of fanfiction - I treasure it more than any book on my bookshelves) but it must have been wrenching. I'm glad this story lightens your spirits, and please - do not 'stop leaving these long reviews!' I value your encouragment so much!

Ok, I hope you don't think this is too weird or anything, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Elrond shook his head. “Compression wraps are unwise for broken ribs unless absolutely necessary for pain. Such wraps can impede proper circulation and keep one from taking deep breaths, which might increase of risk of lung infections. There is a type of wrap I will apply when we arrive at the inn, but not on a cold, dirty street. Master Frodo is having enough difficulty breathing; we must not add to it.”
Finally, someone who writes it properly!!!!! I have read lots of fanfic in which characters are subjected to broken ribs and are then bandaged up. In the modern day era, this is a huge No-No for the reasons you wrote above. Bandaging the ribs compresses the muscles and doesn't allow for the lungs to expand properly, thus leading to collapse of the alveolar (air sacs) and eventually pneumonia. I know this sounds totally silly and pathetic, but you have made my day, Budgie by writing this one detail true to life when so many others don't. And you had Elrond explain it so very well to Sam too!
I am highly interested to see how you go about relieving Frodo's hemo-pneumothorax, most especially using Middle-earth "technology" and the skills of one Elven healer. If you need any help/tips on the treatment or healing of Frodo's lung, feel free to drop me an email. I see this stuff all the time at the hospital where I work.
One little nitpick though: although the reasoning for having Frodo cough is quite sound, it is better advice given to him after his damaged lung is treated, coupled along with deep breathing exercises to help re-expand the lung. With an internal injury such as you've given poor Frodo, it's extremely difficult to breathe and almost impossible to cough due to all of the air pressure being exerted onto the one good lung. Every time Frodo breathes in, some of that air is being driven through the puncture in his bad lung and out into his chest cavity, where it (and the blood) eventually compresses the good lung until it too is no longer usable. Every time he beathes in, he is in fact squashing his good lung too with this particular type of injury until that pressure is released. I hope they get that inn soon, before it's too late!
Boy, you're putting all the hobbits through their paces (grins evilly)
I'm loving every bit of this tale, Budgie, and I can't wait for the next chapter. :D

Author's reply
Elemmírë, this is my formal thanks for your review, and for your incredibly generous offer in providing me medically correct information for Chapter 15. You will see much of your information used (with slight fudging ... this is Middle-earth, after all) and I will certainly credit you when the chapter is published. I appreciate you going to so much effort to explain the 'whats' and the 'why's' - as I said in that e-mail, it is an example of the support and encouragement and sharing of knowledge in our LotRs community. While I still have to -er- fix (read 'wiggle out of') my gaffe on Frodo's coughing, I am immeasurably more confident about writing the chapter.
Thank You!

Katie, I swear, you must have the best dad in the world. Certainly the most understanding. Don't apologize for the review, either in timing or content - you have your own unique method of expressing yourself and I value it. You manage to do something many time-honored writers cannot - establish a visual picture through dialogue. Shirebound is a master at this, as is Aratlithiel. Before I wander too far off the subject ... thank you!

Hello, Aranel (that is the loveliest name). I fear that cliffhangers are sort of my trademark - I can barely write a long-form story without them. It comes from a deep-seated sadistic streak, I think...;) Anyway, I am so glad you are enjoying the story!
