"Lasses can be very contrary, Bungo. They often say what they do not mean, and expect that we will somehow know what they do mean, if we 'really love' them. If we cannot read their minds, they take offense." *Grins* Old Gerontius is a wise hobbit! He knows his lasses very well. But poor Bungo had a hard time with his beloved. Not only that she was a lass, but also a Took ;-) However, as soon as little Bilbo is born all troubles are forgotten. He has a nice brand-new hobbit hole to grow up in, and 78 years later he will get a very special "birthday present" :-)
Author's reply
Yes, well being the father of twelve, he's had not only his own three daughters to deal with, but all those sons he had to see through adolescence as well. Not to mention a smial full of Took neices and nephews... And Bungo did have a hard time courting a Took lass-- but he was successful, thank goodness! Yes, he will.
Grey Wonderer · 9 August 2009 · Chapter 67: Aftermath of a Feast
I love the song. You always do so very well with working music into your stories. This is very tender.
Author's reply
Thank you! The song I based it on is really beautiful; I've always wanted to use it in a story, and now I finally had the chance.
GamgeeFest · 6 August 2009 · Chapter 67: Aftermath of a Feast
Poor Diamond! Good thing Aragorn was close at hand and knew what to do! And poor Pippin! He probably got no sleep at all last night. That is a lovely song! Very fitting for Pippin and his Diamond.
Author's reply
Yes, poor Pippin! I'm sure you are right about Pippin-- but now she's better, he'll get some rest! And I'm glad you liked the song! (Sorry to be so late replying. Somehow I missed seeing a couple of reviews.)
cathleen · 6 August 2009 · Chapter 67: Aftermath of a Feast
Thank you again for this delightful story, Dreamflower!!! *Hugs*
Author's reply
I'm so very glad you enjoyed it, dear, and I hope it made you feel better.
harrowcat · 5 August 2009 · Chapter 67: Aftermath of a Feast
Just as lovely a read the second time around Dreamflower. Is there a tune for the song available?
Author's reply
I've heard several versions of it, but my favorite is by Niamh Parsons. http://www.niamhparsons.com/fylde_track5.html The song has several names as well, and there's some dispute as to the meaning of it. (Some say the "pastheen fion" is a woman, some a young man, and some even say it was Bonnie Prince Charlie!) The one I listed is from a listing of old broadsheet lyrics. When I adapted it, I had to leave out the lovely Gaelic part of the refrain.
Virtuella · 4 August 2009 · Chapter 67: Aftermath of a Feast
Absolutely Awwwww-worthy! ;-)
Author's reply
*grin* Thank you.
Baggins Babe · 25 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Heat Waves and Hobbit Wishes
Only pippin could consider a royal bathing-room to be a great hobbit swimming pool. i love the idea of our hobbits all splashing about and enjoying themselves.
Author's reply
I love it too! It's fun to think about swimmiing in the summer heat! (We've been having high nineties, and last week even triple digits, this summer!)
harrowcat · 24 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Heat Waves and Hobbit Wishes
A cool bath in the heat is lovely. And a bath big enough to share
Author's reply
Yep! I can imagine that baths in the Citadel were perfectly huge!
Grey Wonderer · 23 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Heat Waves and Hobbit Wishes
A hobbit swimming pool! Good thinking, Pippin! This was cute.
Author's reply
Yep! I'm sure Pippin was inspired by the size of the baths; and just persuade the servants to put in cold water instead of hot! Voila!
Antane · 23 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Heat Waves and Hobbit Wishes
Sweet fun! Love seeing Faramir too and his reaction. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
Author's reply
Originally the scene with Faramir had more detail, which I had to sacrifice for word count. I'm glad you liked it!
Larner · 23 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Heat Waves and Hobbit Wishes
Ooh! Yes, perfect--and even Sam is appreciative! Heh! Yes!
Author's reply
Yes, some nice cool water to just sit in is most refreshing!
Virtuella · 22 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Heat Waves and Hobbit Wishes
"Is it unreasonable?" "No, but it is unusual." That bit of dialogue really amused me!
Andrea · 22 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Heat Waves and Hobbit Wishes
"Sing hey for the bath at close of day" :-) LOL! That was funny! Pippin always gets what he wants, even if it involves transforming a bathroom into a swimming pool. His request might have been unusual, but I found it rather "cool" ;-)
Antane · 9 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
Sorry to be so behind here but what a nice story, another of the many many loving, sweet memories Merry would have of his Frodo and Frodo would have of his Merry. And Happy Birthday! (even more sorry that it is so belated!) Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
Author's reply
Thank you! I do very much like making happy memories for the young cousins! (And thanks for the birthday wishes!)
Celeritas · 6 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
This was so cute!! I really loved the beginning wistfulness of Frodo's realizing that Merry is now old enough to begin understanding that not all is right at the Great Smials. And then you rounded it off with good old-fashioned hobbit fluff! Now that's a way to go about celebrating your birthday!
Author's reply
When it comes to his little cousin, Frodo is very perceptive. And even at a young age, my Merry is a protective little thing. He is puzzled at why Lalia makes the people he loves "sad and angry", but it raises his hackles to have them disturbed that way. Yet he's still a bit too young to figure out just how to deal with it. Frodo's solution of getting themselves away for a day was just right. And hobbitfluff is a great weakness of mine. I just love giving young hobbits happy times and good memories, that will sustain them later on.
Larner · 6 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
Am so very glad they were able to have this pleasure together. And loved the oblique reference to the other tale in which Lalia herself managed to bring about a tragedy through the overuse of that tongue of hers. An excellent comeuppance offered her by Bilbo!
Author's reply
Yes. I felt that Bilbo would not have much tolerance for her sharp tongue, and he also knew where her own "skeletons" were buried-- and being head of the Bagginses and not under her thumb, he could remind her with impunity, knowing it would shut her up!
Kitty · 5 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
First of all, belated Happy Birthday! Hope you had a great day! This is a lovely gift to your readers! Nothing better than a bit of Hobbitfluff. Very sensible of Frodo to take Merry (and himself) as far away from Lalia as possible. And the two had a wonderful day, swimming and playing and enjoying themselves.
Author's reply
Well, I have a great weakness for hobbitfluff, both to read and to write it! I hope their day was very enjoyable-- I think that anytime it was just the two of them, they would have had a great time!
GamgeeFest · 4 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
What a lovely summer's day for Frodo and Merry! Merry needed to get away from that mean old Lalia, and Frodo knew just how to keep him calm and happy.
Author's reply
Yes, and it got Frodo the chance to get away from everything, too! And Frodo always knew just the way to make Merry happy-- and vice-versa!
Andrea · 2 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
A Golden Summer's Day, indeed! The perfect day for Merry and Frodo to enjoy each other's company and to forget about Lalia the Fat. It was also the perfect occasion for a Tip and Tulip Story. I like those very much, especially the fact that their auntie always knows what *really* happened ;-) Thank you very much, Dreamflower and happy (belated) birthday to you!
Author's reply
Well, that's just what Frodo hoped. And the day after, they can all head to Bag End, and put her behind them. I love writing "Tip and Tulip". They have a sort of formula that little children love: they always start out with the exact same words, and whatever their adventure, aunty always has the last word! ((((hugs)))) Thank you!
Tigger · 1 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
I love it when it's a story about Frodo and Merry during this time in their relationship. First time I've seen one about Merry's realization about just how nasty Lalia is though. Dead on the money though. This had a little bit of everything in it...Frodo and Merry having fun, Frodo trying to give Merry some comfort and time alone from everyone else, Frodo teaching Merry something, a Tip and Tulip story...Just...Sigh!!! :oD Thank you for the lovely story Sweetie and a very Happy Birthday to you!! (((HUGS))) BTW, did you know you share your birthday w/my country? Canada is also marking our Birthday today. It was 142 years ago Confederation happened and the Dominion of Canada became a country in our own right. So Happy Birthday to all of us!! :o)
Author's reply
I love those too. There can never be enough young!Frodo wee!Merry stories to suit me. Merry was an intelligent and sensitive child. He just had to pick up on how Lalia made the people around her feel. And yep, I wanted to put a bit of everything in it, as a kind of treat for my friends! Thank you for the b'day wishes! And I hope that your Canada Day was as lovely as I expect our Independence Day to be! So Happy Birthday to all of us!! :o) *grin*
shirebound · 1 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
You can just guess how much I adore this. Snuggling and tickling and eating and lovely story-telling and cousiny love. Thank you for this sweet gift to us, and Happy Birthday again!
Author's reply
Well, those are all the sorts of things that I love as well, dear! I'm glad you enjoyed your little gift! (((((((hugs))))))))
Virtuella · 1 July 2009 · Chapter 65: A Golden Summer's Day
A picnic, splashing in the pond, feeding the ducks, skipping stones and to round it all off, a good story - I tell you, my children would have loved this outing, too! And it's so cute that, being hobbits, they need two picnic hampers!
Author's reply
I had a very good time myself on this outing! And naturally they needed two hampers: one for elevenses and another for lunch! *grin*
Kitty · 10 June 2009 · Chapter 64: Keeping the Peace
Ah yes, I remember – even after the Quest, Pippin had very bad memories of being used as a model *grin* No wonder the poor lad wanted to flee to Bad End! Good of Paladin and Eglantine to put their feet down and put a stop to that.
Author's reply
Yep. He did want to get away from all those sisters! At least until his father gets home!
Kitty · 10 June 2009 · Chapter 63: Taking the Cake
Sweet idea of Freddy to have this cake for Frodo! Of course, we know it’s not only to distract him from the move, but sort of a farewell gift as well. Our Sam is a sensible lad, making sure his family has enough money while he is away – and not only for the time it would take to get to Rivendell and back. And I probably don’t need to mention that I agree with him – keep his sister as far away from Lotho as possible! Anyway, it was fun to watch Rosie and Sam, and to know that Rosie had guessed that there was more to the whole thing than met the eye. And of course, now I’m hungry ;-)
Author's reply
Yes, a distraction from the move, a farewell gift, and a diversion from the Conspiracy, all rolled into one delicious cake! Sam is very sensible, and this was something I wondered about when I wrote my original Conspiracy story, but did not address. This was a chance to make up for that. Rose is just as sharp and clever as her future husband! Want some cake? *grin*
