Ah... this is how they came into the Houses of Healing, isn't it? Makes a lot of sense now. This is a very nice twist. I hadn't expected such an ending to it at all. Take care, Nienor

Oh,no! And here I thought the boy finally had got things right and would untie them. Hm... Don't like the way this is going (well, I do of course since I love the story, but I would like to see the hobbits freed, especially since Ferdi is hurt)

Pearl Took · 20 March 2006 · Chapter 3

This is a wonderful tale, Lin, all your apologies and explanations aside. An interesting adventure for Farry and Ferdi with a happy ending. Well done indeed!!

Dreamflower · 20 March 2006 · Chapter 3

What a sweet ending! It's a good thing Uncle Cirion was familiar with the Ernil i Pherrianath and that as a former soldier he knew what needed to be done. Poor Turbor, still confused--as if just getting the gold meant his little captives were not Halflings. But of course, they would have been rewarded. Aragorn would have known at once that no *real* harm was *meant*. And I would love to see the scene, when you get around to it, dear, where Farry and Ferdi find themselves trying to explain it all. Poor Ferdi is *not* having a particularly relaxing trip, is he?

Bodkin · 20 March 2006 · Chapter 3

Well - Turbor was proved right! Cirion was wise to send Turbor and Corin with Farry and Ferdi - quite apart from the need to have them both there to help get the hobbits to the Houses of Healing. There was no way that, seeing them, Aragorn would blame them for their errors of judgment. And Cirion, too, did all that he could, considering his condition. Is this excerpts from Farry and Ferdi go to Gondor? If so, I can't wait for you to be ready to post the whole tale. Good stuff.

demeter d · 20 March 2006 · Chapter 3

Charming piece. I would indeed be interested to see the whole thing whenever you finish it. the slow-witted nephew's assertions remind me of Eomer's statement upon meeting Aragorn and his two companions, "legends rising out of the grass". It is a sad fact of modern life that very often only children and slow-witted people can see magic in everyday things.

Larner · 19 March 2006 · Chapter 3

I'm waiting to see the rest of the story now, of course, Lindelea. Love to your own leprechauns, and if you make it up our way you are always welcome here.

shirebound · 19 March 2006 · Chapter 3

What a lovely happy ending! It left me with a big grin on my face.

Pearl Took · 18 March 2006 · Chapter 2: Dawning Realisations

Very interesting, Lin! "‘Halflings!’ the boy said. ‘But I’ve heard of Halflings! Great warriors, they are, whose faces shine with goodness; and doers of great deeds.’ He peered from one hobbit to the other. ‘You don’t look a bit like Halflings.’" I love that! The "great warrior" hobbits hadn't really looked the part either, LOL :)

Bodkin · 18 March 2006 · Chapter 2: Dawning Realisations

Halflings as great warriors ... Well, they must seem bigger in imagination after all the tales told about them. And Ferdi might be in pain, but he's got all his wits about him. The child seems a lot sharper than his brother - and he's very defensive of him. But he's been filled with tales of the Little Folk. Little does he realise that good fortune might indeed come in the persons of these two. And bad fortune could follow, too.

Bodkin · 18 March 2006 · Chapter 1: A Sliver of Light

Their captor seems to think he's got a pair of leprechauns under his control - and wants their pot of gold. Ferdi sounds in a bad way. Tough as he is, and having survived so much, he might need the wits of Farry to help him here. I hope those who saw them fall aren't convinced they must be dead or they'll never get to them in time to be of help. You've got them in a pretty pickle!

Bodkin · 18 March 2006 · Chapter 0: Awakening

What a nerve-racking start! And very cunningly avoiding names!

Dreamflower · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 2: Dawning Realisations

I just *love* this! I've been looking forward to hearing of Farry and Ferdi's visit to the South, and now we get a little taste of it! I do hope that RL allows you some writing time again sometime soon--but if it doesn't,I'll be satisfied with the crumbs. I thought the device in the beginning, leaving the reader to wonder if it was Merry and Pippin or someone else, was extremely clever. And when I discovered that one of the cousins was Farry, I suddenly realized when the story was set! Poor Tooks, captured by those who have their heads full of legends about "little folk" with treasure. Not only that, but the only previous encounter in the family was years ago, with Gollum (clever, that! by the way.) so of course there isn't going to be much trust there. And just what does the lad think that halflings do look like? He clearly has not listened all that well to the tales of the Quest--to full up with tales of treasure, I dare say. And poor Ferdi. Hurt. Again. I'm really enjoying this!

FantasyFan · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 2: Dawning Realisations

I can hear Ferdi's thoughts - "Doer of great deeds? No, that's his Da, and if you don't let us go he'll set Troll's Bane in you when he finds out!" Seriously though, it's not too many years since those great deeds, and the stuff of legend already. But now you've got me worried about Pip-lad, and who's got him, not to mention the missing guardsman and one crochety old former steward who's supposed to be along. Will the hobbits be rescued, or will they manage to free themselves using just their wits?

Larner · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 2: Dawning Realisations

Too normal looking to be taken for Frodo, are they? Oh, how wonderful! I love it, Lindelea! He's heard of Halflings, so at least they do have a chance. The fact they're barefoot and have hairy feet at that does work to their favor, even if they aren't as fair as the Baggins cousin. Thanks for the giggles this morning--I NEEDED them!

shirebound · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 2: Dawning Realisations

Oh, I'm so glad the hobbits are getting a chance to explain themselves. And what an appropriate St. Pat's day fic!

FantasyFan · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 1: A Sliver of Light

Ah, it is from Ferdi and Farry go to Gondor! How tantalizing to hear that this is part of a good long tale. I'm grateful that you're giving us this sneak preview, and hopeful that someday RL will allow the full story to be told. Great fun to hear little bits of the Fellowship's story, woven through the memories of Ferdi and Farry: this is time for their own Adventures, now. I can't help but think both of them are going to come out of this with even more appreciation for what the hobbits before them had to go through. Poor Ferdi, he's really not going to become enamoured of Men this way. His dislocated arm reminds me that he's already had more than enough excitement in his life for the ordinary hobbit, but then he's not really ordinary either. I'm eager to see just how they manage to use their wits to escape from both the physical danger as well as educate yet another person who has quite the wrong ideas about 'little people'.

Author's reply

I do hope RL will allow writing again one of these days. Though it *is* much faster merely to brush the dust off a ripening draft, there are built-in limitations. Especially when the draft is unfinished. But at least this little out-take was complete, and could stand alone. Poor Ferdi, he really is a walking advertisement for a billboard in the Shire regarding Why Hobbits Ought to Stay at Home. (But we're certainly glad that they don't.) Thanks!

Anso the Hobbit · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 1: A Sliver of Light

Ah, just as I thought, lol! It's an echo of sorts of what Merry and Pippin went through and I am very excited about this tale! The situation isn't completely identical of course, but there is enough of likeness to make me remember Tolkien's own words as I read your chapter. :D

Author's reply

Yes, the story could have gone either way, either a rehashing of "The Uruk-hai" or a snippet from "Farry and Ferdi Go to Gondor". But the "Uruk-hai" story doesn't have such potential for parallels with Leprechauns, which was written into the "Gondor" story some months ago. And it *is* St. Patrick's day, after all.

Larner · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 1: A Sliver of Light

The Hobbits believed to be leprechauns! Now, that's quite an idea, of course. And the mouth in the pocket remark is indeed quite familiar.... Lovely, Lindelea.

Author's reply

Researching leprechauns has been great fun! In one account, I found that they are about three feet tall and very fond of wearing green and grey. They are supposed to be very clever with their fingers, and can vanish in a twinkling if you take your eyes off them. Oh, and they are very fond of smoking pipes. Hmmm. Sounds a little familiar.

FantasyFan · 16 March 2006 · Chapter 0: Awakening

This is a scary start! No hobbits should be afraid, bound and gagged, in the dark, waking from nightmare to nightmare! I'm not sure if I'm hoping that this is Pippin, with Merry beside him, or if I'm hoping it's not. Because if it is Pippin and Merry, well, they have the experience few other hobbits do of surviving and escaping very dire circumstances, so I have confidence in their skills and cunning, and some hope; however, I don't want my lovely hobbits to be in such dire circumstances in the first place. If it's some other hobbits, less hope and maybe less reason to love them already when I don't know their names (but then again, all hobbits are lovely, aren't they?) A sapping cliffhanger of an opening, Lindelea!

Author's reply

Definitely agree with you--all hobbits are lovely, and desperate situations just done fit. Will have to get them out of this rather quickly, I think.

Larner · 16 March 2006 · Chapter 0: Awakening

Now, what a way to awake, bringing to mind immediately the memory of Moria and Gandalf's fall with the Balrog. The idea Gandalf's fall to his apparent death was lit by the Balrog's fires is a horrifying one, btw. Now, who's abducted him, under what circumstances, and where's he being held?

Author's reply

Yes, the image haunted me too. The details of the abduction will come clear over the next couple chapters. (There aren't that many chapters in all, either, so there won't be long to wait.)

shirebound · 16 March 2006 · Chapter 0: Awakening

Goodness! Now if *that* isn't an intriguing beginning!

Author's reply

Hope it continues to please.

Anso the Hobbit · 16 March 2006 · Chapter 0: Awakening

Oh! And you stop there! This is too exciting. *paces impateiently wanting more* Sorry. This is a wonderful start and I do want more. :D Is it Pippin or perhaps Faramir? Where is he? What has happened?

Author's reply

You are a very perceptive reader! The prologue could be either, or both (one mirroring the other), but Chapter 1 makes it clear. (at least, I hope)
