Fimbrethil · 20 August 2025 · Chapter 13: Letter Twelve - An End and a Beginning

Aha. Writing to Éowyn now? As for the rest, a statue of Boromir?! Good. ….cries inside about the rest of the story.

Fimbrethil · 20 August 2025 · Chapter 12: Letter Eleven - Alone

What of the Lady of Rohan, Faramir? Or is this when the Warden fetches you the first time? Lo! I almost forgot about Merry! Those two will be a great comfort to you. The Stewardship has NOT failed, Faramir. You have held the office until the King Returned, and you will still do it after.

Fimbrethil · 20 August 2025 · Chapter 11: Letter Ten

Wow. Great writing! It is good that Faramir knows about Boromir, though Pippin wasn’t even there for some of it. He still doesn’t know about his father, though maybe he guessed he is dead. Almost time for Éowyn! Meanwhile, have you any letters from Boromir? Say on his travels, or now in Valinor, or the Halls of Mandos? Perhaps he writes them while watching events unfold: the Return of Mithrandir, Éomer, The burial of Théodred/Helm’s Deep, the drowning of Isengard…or perhaps he skips all that and only watches Frodo on his quest.

Fimbrethil · 20 August 2025 · Chapter 10: Letter Nine - Part Two

Poor Pippin. Will he say it? I see he has learned…patience? But not til the troll and the Scouring of the Shire will he learn something else. May Damrod, Mablung, and the other soldiers and people be remembered forever! Did Damrod really die? Still interesting/funny Faramir thinks Aragorn is going to battle the Nameless One, and bringing Imrahil, the King of Rohan, and Beregond, not to mention Merry, Legolas, Gimli, and Mithrandir.

Fimbrethil · 20 August 2025 · Chapter 9: Letter Nine - Part One

Oh! Wew! Heehee. Faramir doesn’t know Denethor is dead. But Pippin does. Three cheers for not revealing that, Master Halfling! Three cheers and more for all involved in the retreat! Also rather funny Faramir thinks they will go all the way to Barad-dûr. i wonder what happens next in the story! As for his current life, Éowyn will enter it soon, I do believe!

Fimbrethil · 20 August 2025 · Chapter 8: Letter Eight

I thought I’d lost you at that time, the night was black; the river was freezing. I barely made it to the other side, but you were in your heavy armor. At last, after what seemed hours, I found you, laughing at the look on my face. You are impossible. I almost think you remained hidden to tease me. Almost. [Heehee it’s the Rusty Armor Joke! I think the first time my sister and I watched the films, after reading the film guide, oh, it was because the caption of the picture was like “Boromir and Faramir after the Escape from Osgiliath”. But I compared Boromir in his full metal armor, to Faramir in what looks more like a leather jerkin. And besides the fact of how did Boromir swim in it, how did it not get rusty? And Faramir isn’t wearing metal, so his armor couldn’t rust. (I guess I didn’t consider that water can wear at leather). But then since their armor is different, someone said maybe Denethor gave Boromir new armor, but he didn’t give any to Faramir. So maybe Boromir receives new armor any tine he needs it, but Faramir has to sew his own…or something. Related to that is maybe the armor Boromir is wearing isn’t rusty because he took it off and left it in Osgiliath, and afterwards donned new armor. But how would he have time to do that? Same thing with Faramir.] [[The other thing about that picture is that I think it is one of the only ones where they are both in a happy time and you can see them, their armor, and their hair, straight on. i.e. When someone thinks of a picture of them they usually think of that one.]] Ah, Boromir, even at this hour, as all hope would drain from me, I cannot lose hope. Our men make my heart swell with pride. No people seem greater to me at this moment than those assembled here with me. Not even the kings of old. I see the strain on their faces, the weariness in their limbs, yet I have only to walk by and their heads raise up and they nod and smile at me and I see their quality. I can feel their trust, Boromir, and I would not fail them. You did not tell me of this part of leadership, Brother, the crushing weight of responsibility, the untoward love for our men and the knowledge that they go to their deaths at my command. At least they know that I will join them. [Wow. Yes, they have quality too.] I guess I was too early with my cheers. (Though they deserved them then—well, Imrahil didn’t do anything). But now! Faramir gets to live 90-100 more years, (I think.) And he has reason to live: Aragorn, Éowyn, Restoration, Establishing the Kingship of the Reunited Kingdom…Pippin & Beregond (and Bergil)…

Fimbrethil · 19 August 2025 · Chapter 7: Letter Seven

Mayhap that is why mother was able to keep father at arms length from me, so that I would be free for my studies and my music. [The first quick glance I read that as magic and was surprised.) He deemed I paid more attention to Mithrandir’s opinion than to his. There is a hatred there, mayhap even a fear of Mithrandir or something associated with him. I do not know why or what the history is that has caused this. But that is naught compared to what I have learned. [That Denethor knew of the Ring, which, did he really, canonically?] [Hummm, I thought Faramir knew of Aragorn?] And Boromir, he is right, may the Valar forgive me. Father’s ways are for Gondor alone, but since speaking with the Ringbearer, I see more clearly now. This evil does not assail Gondor only, but all of Middle Earth. Mithrandir sees this and understands it. His excitement, or mayhap fear, as I detailed my meeting with Frodo, has convinced me that what I surmised is true – the fate of all Middle Earth rests on this one creature – this Halfling. [Ah yes.] The meeting did not go well, and, against his own judgment, he found himself riding east again, with a small band, riding towards Osgiliath, to harry the Enemy for just a little longer in hopes that Rohan would come. [Oh Faramir… I watched that scene actually maybe only once, last night, but I watched the Ride of the Rohirrim at least three times.] [Nevertheless, they are both technically sad, for different reasons].

Fimbrethil · 19 August 2025 · Chapter 6: Letter Six

I was curtly reminded that Denethor awaited me and even escape from the Nazgûl was no reason to be late for him [I would laugh, but.] It is easy to forget that Faramir thought Mithrandir was dead, and that was the first time he saw him sinse in White. For some reason it is easier to remember for the Rohirrim. 3 Cheers for Faramir, Mithrandir, and Shadowfax! 3 more cheers for his men, Imrahil, and Pippin!

Fimbrethil · 19 August 2025 · Chapter 5: Letter Five

There were reports of Haradrim using the ancient roads up north and your Rangers [I was under the impression that they were Faramir’s] and I met them and did what damage we could to their ranks. Fire courses through my veins as I think of them desecrating the very roads that Gondor built. You would do the same, dear brother. I know your heart. I had not meant to come so far north, but as I said, it seemed to be fated thus for that is where we met the Halflings. I left them in the care of two of our men and led the Rangers to battle. It went well, the trap worked. The men did more than they were trained for. You would have been proud. The men of Gondor, the Enemy may say, are weak or frail, but there is courage in this band and honor to be found. This evil does not seem to touch me. I feel nothing but dread of it and hatred, yes, for what it did to you, what it stole from me. The Halfling has told me some of what occurred and I believe, and it seems he believes, that you were not yourself. [I LOVE book Faramir! And if you or I want to imagine him with RAVEN movie hair, even better!] Yet, the courage in his heart is stronger than mine. He will die doing this and you would say it is folly, but I know why he has chosen this path. He is valiant, Boromir, and worthy of our love. I will let him go, even though Father will be furious. My very life lies in the balance, but there is something here greater than Gondor. He must be allowed to try to do this. I gleaned some knowledge during Mithrandir's visits, enough to know that this thing is evil. It corrupted Isildur and now it has corrupted you. Its power is unimaginable and I cannot wield it. Neither can our Father. It must be destroyed. Why this little one should have been chosen is a mystery to me. But as I look at him, I know he will do everything in his power to do it. I remember your motto 'Gondor will see it done.' To think that this little stranger has more ability to do it than you is beyond me. [“Something here greater than Gondor… I can see that. The last three things.] His companion told me before they left that I have shown my quality. I feel his respect for you, but also his fear of you. Boromir, how can I make them understand! You were the one who raised me after mother died. Father turned from me and I would have been an orphan if not for you! Do not they understand this – my quality comes from you! [Oh! I would have thought that quality came from Mithrandir, possibly Imrahil, and his other studies. Not to mention Denethor’s uncorrupted/untroubled nature.] And your pride was lifted up by our Father – and it was good – but it was also too much for one man. Would that I could have helped you see that Father was wrong. Gondor is not a man – not a Steward – but a glorious Entity unto itself. He made you believe you were the only one to save Her, and in your fear and desperation – and pride – you did the unthinkable. You broke your oath. But if not for you, for your love of me and your deep need to make me better than you, I too would have failed. I owe you everything – my love, my life – my honor. [Oh my. What a paragraph! Especially “Gondor is not a man…”] Brother - I await the coming of this Aragorn, whom the Halfling spoke of, and will do as I believe you would have done. I will take him as my liege lord and serve him well, in memory of you, dear Brother. I will pledge my fealty to this Aragorn, King of Gondor, for you, my beloved Brother. [I just realized that he did, indeed, have hint of him from Frodo/Sam. Also, that might be how it begins, but I think soon enough (possibly as early as when Aragorn saves him) Faramir will pledge his fealty and serve him, for his own self, and the welfare of his—their—people. ] You have certainly learned his thoughts, somehow.

Fimbrethil · 19 August 2025 · Chapter 4: Letter Four

Wow. Oof. I would copy all of that, especially the first half. Do not give up hope, Faramir. The King Will Return. Side Note: I thought he found one of the pieces of horn himself? Or was that only in the movie? Or maybe whoever found a part told him first before telling Denethor? That, I think, was in a story here. Your’s probably. ohh Faramir…maybe Denethor had to die, so Faramir could survive.?

Fimbrethil · 18 August 2025 · Chapter 3: Letter Three

Am I now alone to battle both the enemy and Father? [Ouch,] Also that guard who read it. One thing, the Timeline in Tolkien.net says Faramir didn’t see the boat until the 29th. Does this account for that time?

Fimbrethil · 18 August 2025 · Chapter 2: Letter Two

Oh Sons of Gondor! Alas for Boromir the Bold and Faramir the …Faithful!. Or Far sighted.

Periantari · 29 June 2023 · Chapter 10: Letter Nine - Part Two

What a heart wrenching piece and I love every angsty moment because it is so realistic that Faramir would continue to write and to hear his perspective how events happened is so on point

Soledad · 16 May 2008 · Chapter 99999: Author's Notes

Finally, after such a long time, I have come around to read I started them with this one, because I'm a devout Boromir fan, and you had me almost in tears at some places. Perhaps I'm a little wimpy myself. *g* In any case, this is an interesting concept, and well-executed, too. I also thank your for honouring poor Denethor, despite his flaws.

Hello, My goodness - it was so good to see a review for this. It's been a long time. This was the very first thing I'd written, besides a couple poems. I am very attached to it. I don't believe in coincidences. I just watched this tale yesterday get passed in hits by another one of mine - and it made me sad.... Bless you for reading - but bless you more for sharing this review!

Rhapsody · 12 June 2006 · Chapter 99999: Author's Notes

Dear Agape4Gondor, I said it before and I will say it again... what an incredibly well written story. This is deeply moving, the way you capture the emotions of your characters, the manner how you dare to explore it in such magnificent style. Unique and outstanding, this story is most definitely one of my favourites! Your silent fangirl, Rhapsody

Thank you so much for your kind words. I owe so much to Faramir for letting me release these letters.

Linda Hoyland · 8 May 2006 · Chapter 99999: Author's Notes

These letter have been so touching and beautifully written.I could sense how Faramir was gradually accepting his loss and cherishing the new people in his life, while remembering Boromir and honouring him.THank you for a great read.

Linda Hoyland · 6 May 2006 · Chapter 10: Letter Nine - Part Two

This is just heart rending, poor Faramir, and poor Pippin.I love Faramir's desription of Aragorn and how he senses his greatness.

Author's reply

Linda, It has been a delight reading your reviews. I am so glad you are enjoying the little nuances and such of this tale. I dearly love Pippin's part. The road ahead for Faramir was incredibly difficult... my heart broke for him.

Linda Hoyland · 2 May 2006 · Chapter 4: Letter Four

I could shake Denethor for not realising he still has a priceless jewel. At least we readers know that all is not lost as Faramir fears.Very moving. I had a little time off from my own writing today,to read.I hope to return to this touching story again soon.

Linda Hoyland · 2 May 2006 · Chapter 3: Letter Three

POor,poor Faramir to have such a vision and know it to be true.I love the way you flesh out a part of the book that Tolkien gives only the bare details.

docmon · 22 March 2006 · Chapter 99999: Author's Notes

what a wonderful story, agape. I was amazed at the genuine feeling created in your portrayal of Faramir's feelings. They felt so real to me I surprised myself with tears on occasion. The letters were so heartfelt, so full of longing, I felt I was seeing a fuller understanding of what he must have gone through to lose his brother, especially at that time. I also found myself thinking of my own siblings and how it would feel to lose them. That's how true it felt. The most poignant lines of all, for me, were: "This knowing that you are gone, for you would have brought the Horn with you, even broken, it was precious to you. Yet, here it lies on our Father's knees and it breaks further the bond between Father and Son. All your plans and strategies, dear Boromir, to bring us together, have been for naught. You, against your will, now lie dead between us. There is nothing I can do for him." That's enough to break anyone's heart! I loved also the role of Pippin as his scribe, adding his own two cents as he would do. And the small memorial service was so touching. And then imagine my surprise upon reading your notes to find you drew from your own experience of loss to write this. But no, I wasn't truly surprised, because it was so genuine, that just made sense. Tell your daughter that Faramir is not wimpy, just human. To lose someone so vital to your own being can be nearly incapacitating. He was brave and strong in that he went on despite what he felt. And I do hope Boromir heard your words too, but even more, I hope anyone else that has suffered like you - or Faramir - might read your words and be comforted. Powerful writing.

Author's reply

Docmon, Please forgive me for the late reply. I was rejoicing in New Zealand on an extended holiday. Thank you so much for your comments. I am so glad you were touched. I too loved the points you made. Pippin was a delight and kept insisting that he be part of the story! Thank you! A thousand times.

Linda Hoyland · 19 March 2006 · Chapter 2: Letter Two

If only Denehor had not pushed his son aside at this dark time. I liked faramir's musings on the dream.

Linda Hoyland · 19 March 2006 · Chapter 1: A Missive and Its Reply

I love the foreshadowing that you have here aboout Boromir's feelings for the ring and Faramir's misgivings.

Linda Hoyland · 16 March 2006 · Chapter 13: Letter Twelve - An End and a Beginning

I've just found this wonderful story and will be back to read it in more detail later. I just love the way you descibe Faramir's fee;lings for his brother and his new King.

Thank you! Agape

Dika · 16 March 2006 · Chapter 99999: Author's Notes

I have just finished saving your story to my home computer. Thank you. Thank you very much. I always liked the Gondor brothers, after I've read Evendim's stories on FF.net I loved them. "Faramir's letters" is another fine story to my collection of stories about these fine men. Please, write more stories. Best wishes, Dika.

Author's reply

Hello, Dika, and thank you for reviewing these letters. I am madly in love with the men of Gondor, especially the sons of Denethor. I am in the midst of an epic tale about Denethor - but, of course, the sons are there and growing well... gosh I like writing about them - you might enjoy it - though it is a WIP and very long - Ten Thousand Years Will Not Suffice. I also just finished my first AU - but it is being beta'd at the moment - it started out being about a woman of Gondor, sister to Denethor, but the two boys quickly took over the tale... it is dark though. Again, my deepest thanks for your kind review Agape

Stefania · 9 March 2006 · Chapter 1: A Missive and Its Reply

Very promising, Agape. I'm eager to see how you characterize and contrast the differences between Boromir and Faramir through their writing styles and chosen topics. Good luck with the Mithril awards. I intend to keep up with "Letters From Faramir." - Stefania

Author's reply

Thank you, Stefania. I hope you enjoy this. I loved writing it. Agape
