Great chapter, Tarannon is out of prison like room, and can enjoy life, voices and the sky and such. I liked his confussion on who was in charge.

harrowcat · 26 August 2006 · Chapter 8: Reparations

So the reparations are begun and well begun. Loved this one Clever Hobbit and looking forward to the rest of it before I re-read it in its entirety.

I have really enjoyed this story all the way through. It's a unique "what if" scenario that I found myself wondering about while watching ROTK a few times as well...:-)

Larner · 25 August 2006 · Chapter 4: Interlude

And she has her first meeting with a Hobbit, and gets her dress wet with tears. A worthy healer indeed is Miriel.

I just discovered this story and am now eagerly waiting for the next installment. An original idea for a story--it never occurred to me to wonder about the fate of those hapless beacon guards in the movie. Tolkien's characters are well-written, and I like Tarannon and the other original characters (well, except for Castamir, but he met his just desserts). Good for the healers to treat an injured man regardless of his perceived crimes. (And, no, I don't think the military authorities would try to take him from the Houses by force; soldiers are too often in the care of the healers themselves to want to incur their ire!) But poor Tarannon trying to cut away his hand and the offending mark! I liked the scene with Gandalf a great deal--how the grass felt so blessed to Tarannon after a month in confinement, and how Gandalf offered an apology and an explanation for his oversight. Exciting and well-written story! More soon, please!

I don't think *any* military authority would storm a hospital like that- imagine what angry doctors could do! :) Thanks very much for your review!

Dreamflower · 25 August 2006 · Chapter 8: Reparations

This is a good chapter. I don't think the Gandalf you have depicted here is "defeated", though I can understand how some would think that of movie-verse Gandalf sometimes. He is troubled, for he was unwittingly the cause of someone suffering an injustice--but he is compassionate as well. I like the way you showed Tarannon so eager for sight of the sky, and of having a window--very realistic. And Pippin was very well portrayed!

Author's reply

Yeah, I knew "defeated" wasn't exactly what I was looking for... I just couldn't think of how to say it at the time. Thanks for reviewing!

I love this story so much! Your characterization is extremely good for the movie version Gandalf; so don't worry about that. Please update soon. I get just so exicted every time that you do!

Author's reply

Thanks. I was rather worried about how he would turn out. I'm glad he's okay. I should update sometime next month, depending on how school treats me. :)

grumpy · 5 August 2006 · Chapter 7: Twisted Thinking

Poor Tarannon, none of this is his fault. Just hang in there, till Pippin can get ahold of Gandalf and Aragorn.

Claudia · 2 August 2006 · Chapter 7: Twisted Thinking

I've really enjoyed reading this story! An intriguing idea!

Dreamflower · 31 July 2006 · Chapter 7: Twisted Thinking

You've no idea how lovely it is to see an update of this! I really look forward to seeing the reactions of Aragorn and Gandalf when they discover what Denethor did so unjustly. And Faramir will be horrified! I do hope you update soon!

harrowcat · 31 July 2006 · Chapter 7: Twisted Thinking

Do any of us think straight when we are upset? Lots of twisted thinking going on here. I still remember the expression on Denethor's face when he saw the beacon lit. It made me shiver but I thought that he had an idea of Gandalf's part in the affair and did not think beyond that. However he was definitely stern and indictive enough for the reaction you have given him. I found myself wincing at Merry's implied criticism of Gandalf but it is justified. I hope that we are going to see how he feels about this. Not that I can see there was much he could do about it at the time. Get these people talking to each other before it is too late for Tarannon! If anyone needs the healing hands of the king he does. And deserves them too. Am now out of internet range of a week! How will I contain myself?

grumpy · 9 July 2006 · Chapter 6: Revelations

Poor Tarannon, first to be branded, then not allowed to talk or be spoken too. Pippin must help him. Maybe do some explaining to the king, Aragorn should be able to help. Think of something Pippin, hey go to Gandalf, it was his idea.

Tigger · 9 July 2006 · Chapter 6: Revelations

Oh no indeed. I've been reading this very well written story and was wondering when Pippin would find out about poor Tarannon. I do hope Pippin goes to Aragorn about this. Unlike Denethor, the King's Justice is very different. Looking forward to seeing the direction you take this in next. :o)

harrowcat · 9 July 2006 · Chapter 6: Revelations

'Oh No' indeed! There are a lot of people dealing with an awful lot of misery and guilt here. Not constructive criticism except for a plea from a very impatient reader - more soon please! ;)

harrowcat · 11 June 2006 · Chapter 5: Visiting

Hi Clever Hobbit, glad to see a new update on this and looking forward to more.

Grumpy · 20 May 2006 · Chapter 4: Interlude

Great story, I am really enjoying reading it. Poor Tarannon, he is not having a good week. One day he good to his job, the next thing he is in prison, branded, escaped and now sick. Looking forward to more.

Mercwriter · 15 May 2006 · Chapter 4: Interlude

Um, sorry, I sent the last review before I could check my facts; it's been awhile since I actually read the book. *embarrassed smile* oops. I'll have to go see if I have things straight…

Mercwriter · 15 May 2006 · Chapter 4: Interlude

I enjoyed what I've read so far, Clever Hobbit. A fun idea to base a story on; I've always liked that section in ROTK where Aragorn pardons the soldier who defied Denathor and thus helped save Faramir from the pyre, so this tale attracted my attention as well. You do a good job making Tarannon sympathetic. I felt sorry for the guy. He's lucky they didn't brand him on the forehead. :P Wouldn't it be possible to wear a bandage around his hand all the time, or a glove to hide the scar? I skimmed some sections in the last two chapters after you switched from Tarannon's point of view; I'll come back and read more (in depth, heh) later. As for constructive criticism, plot-wise and content wise so far I don't have any major complaints. At times the writing style and comments or phrases sound a little too modern for Middle Earth, lol, (for example: "kicking into healer mode" ) but I don't have time to do a full critique at the moment. (If I have time later, I'll try and come back and give you more detailed feedback.) Anyway, I like it so far, look forward to more. ~Merc

Elflingimp · 15 May 2006 · Chapter 4: Interlude

Just came across this story and its really interesting and original,to make such a good story out of such a small part of the story of The Lord of The Rings is really creative I love it do go on!

harrowcat · 15 May 2006 · Chapter 4: Interlude

I was really glad to see this up this morning Clever Hobbit. Ah! So the right people are getting to meet each other are they? - good!

harrowcat · 2 April 2006 · Chapter 3: Siege

Was very glad to see an update on this Clever Hobbit. But that is rather an extreme way to get medical treatment.

Dreamflower · 1 April 2006 · Chapter 3: Siege

Oh, poor Tarranon! I do hope he won't suffer too much more. I'm glad the healers who found him were sympathetic enough not to worry much over his being a "traitor". It may sound dreadful, but it's possible having his hand amputated would be the best thing for him--then no one would ever know about the unjust sentence. This is a rare find for me: a movie-verse fic that I can enjoy so much. I hope we--and Tarranon--do not have to wait too long to find out what happens next!

Larner · 1 April 2006 · Chapter 3: Siege

It sounds as if these had taken the Oath of Hippocrates and are taking it seriously. Very nice that he's getting proper treatment here. I find I like Girion and Miriel a good deal.

Larner · 1 April 2006 · Chapter 2: Branded

You chose a good name for this one, at least. Castamir here is in his own way as much a usurper as he for whom he was named. Vicious thing, branding. Aargh!

Larner · 1 April 2006 · Chapter 1: The Beacon Is Lit

Anything but fair, not that this Denethor would be so. But an excellent view of what would have occurred in movieverse had we seen this section!
