Aww. Poor Aragorn. *pets the weary Ranger* I'm looking forward to the rest!
Author's reply
Aragorn certain needs the sympathy, Isha. Thank you for your review of "On the Road Out of Bree," and I assure you there will be more to come. (Unfortunately, things don't seem to get better for our poor, abused Ranger... ;) )
Mysterious Jedi · 13 May 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
very cute story
Author's reply
Glad you enjoyed it! It really does stand to reason, you know, that there would have to be an adjustment period. All sorts of cross-cultural differences would crop up. And they are more fun to think about...
Queen Galadriel · 3 May 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
LOL! Oh my goodness, that is *priceless*, Budgie, just *priceless*! I feel sorry for them all. Poor Aragorn has a lot to get used to. Poor Merry to be so afraid of heights. Poor Pippin, ever cheerful, to be caught in the midst of all of this. Poor Sam-I just know he did *not* enjoy that. Poor ol' Bill, I wouldn't like to be buried either. And poor Frodo. He *is* just a bit overdramatic here, but then anger and frustration has that effect so often, doesn't it? Oh dear me, they have quite the adventure ahead of them. *giggle* More, more! :) God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I think the adjustment period must have been difficult for Ranger and hobbits. So different, Men and Hobbits. And then Elves and Dwarves. Hopefully, everyone will keep their senses of humor through the trials that are coming... *grins*
Queen Galadriel · 3 May 2006 · Chapter 1: A Moment in the Morning in Bree
*giggling* Oh, that is *so* funny, Budgie! LOL! Pippin's questions, Merry's slightly sceptical interest, Frodo's trying to keep order...and Aragorn's exasperation! LOL! I love your fellowship stories! God bless, Galadriel
EstellaB · 15 April 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
I really like this story so far. And I can very well see this happening. Incidentally, why does everybody think Merry is afraid of heights? Is it in the books or letters somewhere? I am just curious. ;)
Author's reply
Hi, EstellaB! As promised in my e-mail, I am 'officially' thanking you for your review and replying to your question. Did my answer satisfy you? I think the line is increasingly blurry between canon and fanon, and for the most part, that is to the good. It makes LotRs more 'accessible,' more human, and more humorous. And gives us so much more to love!
Alex Robert · 10 April 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
Wow! That was really neat! You did a great job on setting up such a good plot! I can't wait to find out what happens next!!! Don't leave me in suspense to long!!!!
Author's reply
Hi, Alex! Thank you for your kind review. I am waiting for tempers (Aragorn's and the hobbits') to settle before publishing the next chapter, but you should see it soon.
grumpy · 2 April 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
Love this story, Strider is having a bad time of it. Missing ponies, missing wizards, hungry hobbits, and a bad case of mud wrestling.
Author's reply
Hi Grumpy! I suspect you of living up to your screen name!? This is a thoroughly miserable bunch of hobbits and Ranger. Let us hope things get better for our poor lads and Aragorn ... heh heh heh
Bodkin · 1 April 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
They are so competing with each other just at the moment. Especially Merry and Aragorn. Not that he stands much of a chance - because if push comes to shove all the hobbits would support Merry against the tall hairy-chinned creature with inadequate lower appendages. I just love the line - “Pity Hobbits can’t help the strange places they grow hair in,” he told them straight-faced. I can see Aragorn adding 'one to me' after saying that. Unfortunately Merry gets him back with “If any of those men from Bree did follow us, standing here and arguing about it probably isn’t the best idea.” This should be a truly interesting journey.
Author's reply
Your comment about Merry and Aragorn in competition tickled me no end, Bodkin. You are SO right. Considering how this series is starting out, it seems a miracle that our two parties are even speaking to each other. I think your choice of the term 'interesting journey' is a deliberate understatment on your part... *grins*
girlofring · 31 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
too cute. I like the playfullness tongue and cheek comedy amongst them. Audience only got to see a couple of scenes with Frodo and Aragorn before the attack and one or two before departure to Mordor. I like the filler. You know looking back at the "Behind the scenes" I do believe there was a part cut in after Frodo had recovered and was walking with Sam and met up with the cousins. I think Arwen's scene was cut and she was the one that told Frodo that Bilbo was there. She was wearing a red dress and of course standing on a platform talking down at them.
Author's reply
I love those 'behind the scene' glimpses! Isn't it amazing how one scene, one passage from canon, just one word, even, can spark a whole story? What a pity we have to work and take care of our families and have a life, instead of just writing and being part of the fandom all day...
GamgeeFest · 31 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
Strider's not scoring many points here, is he? lol This wasn't the best way to start out their trip together, and the marshes aren't going to improve their moods very much when they eventually get to those. Loved the descriptions of all the hobbits as they are being carried through the mud. I can see each of them reacting in just that way. Also enjoyed the insight that even the Rangers know who Merry and Pippin are! Their hijinks are well reknowned!
Author's reply
I'd have to agree, GamgeeFest - the hobbits aren't very impressed with Aragorn, but then, he's not very happy with them, either. The inspiration for this little piece came from the annoyed look on MovieAragorn's face as he leads the hobbits out of Bree. Nobody looks very happy. And their journey is just beginning... heh heh heh
RS · 30 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
"That was unfortunate"...", "you did that deliberately!", "You kicked me!", "Sad state of affairs when I have to be the voice of reason". The whole neighborhood can hear my guffaws coming from my computer room! This is hilarious. Poor Strider! This will be a long journey!
Author's reply
A VERY long journey, I fear, RS. I'm so glad you enjoyed this story. I'm enjoying planning them, keeping the theme of 'getting to know you.' We haven't quite got to the 'where strangers become friends' part yet ... and might not for a while. Poor, poor Aragorn!
RS · 30 March 2006 · Chapter 1: A Moment in the Morning in Bree
HAHAHA! This is priceless! Poor Strider! So much scrutiny for shaving one's beard! "But as we are in an abode with civilized people"..."Bree?".. That cracked me up. My face hurt so bad because of the big grin on my face while reading this. Beautiful!
Author's reply
Hullo, RS! Thank you for your review, and for letting me know you enjoyed the story. It is such a pleasure to be able to share our little stories, and bring enjoyment to others. Thanks!
shirebound · 30 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
Farmers especially seemed to regard Masters Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took with the same sense of fatality as they bemoaned the weather and swarms of locusts. “Careful!” Merry ordered. “Are you all right, Pip?” Aragorn thought Merry’s concern should rightfully be for him, for he felt a squirrel had been set loose upon him. “Merry is afraid of heights,” Pippin whispered. “He won’t say so, but it’s true. Will you be very careful of him?” This is so delightful. But poor Aragorn! I hope the hobbits realize that they must learn to be careful of HIM. He's doing his best, poor Man.
Author's reply
Oh, what a good point, Shirebound! I might have to deviate from the next story planned to focus on that. We know the hobbits can be very, very sweet ... but Aragorn probably hasn't formed a very flattering opinion of them, from what he's seen. Frodo falling off a table, Merry and Pip with their noses in mugs of ale, Sam glaring at him distrustfully ... yes, you are right. Aragorn needs some hobbit TLC.
Pearl Took · 30 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
Hehehehehe! I love it! Frodo can be such a stuffed shirt! He really needs to loosen up a bit. LOL “Won’t you take a bit of a rest?” Pippin asked as he turned back to the morass." At least Pip showed Aragorn some consideration ;) Well done, Budgie :)
Author's reply
You are right, Pearl - Frodo can indeed be pompous. That is very BookFrodo - in canon, he can be melodramatic and a drama queen. And still brave and sweet and caring and so filled with honor and goodness that we adore him. Of course, Aragorn might not at the moment. And might grow less fond of him in upcoming chapters... (giggle!)
fliewatuet · 30 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
This is absolutely hilarious. As if the circumstances of that journey were not dire enough already, you did have to throw a mud-puddle into their way :-) Aragorn's retort about Hobbit cannot helping the strange places they grew hair was absolutely priceless. I love the gentle humour of your stories and was happy to wake up to an update.
Author's reply
Hi, Fliewatuet. Thank you for the compliment ... I love writing humor into these shorts (as opposed to the action/adventure/angst pieces) and am so pleased when it is appreciated. Thanks!
harrowcat · 30 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
If only they knew how long... This is great. I just plain loved it all!
Author's reply
Hullo, Harrowcat! When I was thinking about this series, it occured to me that since it was an ongoing series of events, there was really no end to the 'learning process' or to the series. It will be fun to write the episodes as they come to me, instead of being fixed into a timeline. All the way from the Shire to Mordor and back ... Aragorn has no idea... *grins*
Larner · 30 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
I doubt that Aragorn ever dreamed that his charge would be this difficult; and here Frodo was NOT making it easy. Poor man! Now, if I could get him here into a nice hot bath....
Author's reply
I sense your mind wandering there at the last sentence, Larner. Hummmm, yes, that does present a picture... *cough* What I meant to say was, I am certain that it was not smooth sailing, those miserable days traveling through the Wild before Weathertop. And four wet, hungry, unhappy hobbits would try the patience of a saint.
Linda Hoyland · 29 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
Just deliightful !Poor Aragorn caked in mud and those cheeky Hobbits !
Author's reply
Hi, Linda! I have to confess that this story was birthed from the look of annoyance on MovieAragorn's face as he led the Hobbits out of Bree. He had to be that aggravated for a reason. And if he wasn't before, he sure is now...
rabidsamfan · 29 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
Well, this left me grinning. All that trouble, and they haven't even got to the Midgewater Marshes yet! What a wonderful series this is turning out to be.
Author's reply
Oh, Rabidsamfan, it's amazing that Aragorn didn't throw up his hands and desert. Of course, Gandalf would have been furious, and they are known for being 'quick to anger.' But a few more incidents like this, and our poor Ranger might consider it. Not to give any spoilers out, of course... *cough*
Dreamflower · 29 March 2006 · Chapter 2: On the Road Out of Bree
Poor Aragorn! This was so cute--I love it that Pippin was first and fearless, and that he confided in Aragorn about Merry's fear of heights. I was touched by Sam's concern for Bill, and I had to chuckle at Frodo's prickly pride. Really, I'm not surprised he ended up in a thorn-bush! This was just wonderful--I hope we don't have to wait long for the next installment!
Author's reply
I always thought that Pippin and Aragorn must have had a special relationship, and perhaps this first gesture of trust was part of that. As the youngest and smallest, Pippin would certainly look to Aragorn for protection, which he would receive, along with affection, for just those reasons. I'll try not to take so long with the next installment!
Delrauko · 14 February 2006 · Chapter 1: A Moment in the Morning in Bree
Cute! i love fellowship stories!! keep them coming!!lol :-D
Author's reply
Hi Delrauko! I'm glad you enjoyed the story. No fear on the 'keeping them coming' part - the hard part seems to be getting them to stop long enough to have a real life. ("Real life?" asks Budgie's alter ego. "What's that?")
Larner · 24 January 2006 · Chapter 1: A Moment in the Morning in Bree
I NEVER thought I'd pity Aragorn traveling with the Hobbits before they were started even, but I'm beginning to. Hilarious start to a momentous trip! A good deal movie-verse, I noted.
Author's reply
Hi again (and again! *giggle*) I love reading about those moments that are skipped over in the book, and either lightly touched or passed over in Our Movies. You are right - this story was greatly influenced by the aggravated look Aragorn wears as he leads the hobbits out of Bree. Well, it's ONE explanation of why he looks so annoyed. *grins*
Jeodo Brandybuck · 22 January 2006 · Chapter 1: A Moment in the Morning in Bree
As usual, a delightful story! I'm so looking forward to the next one. Jeodo Brandybuck
Author's reply
Better late than never, Jeodo! (Both my response and the next installment of this series.) The subsequent stories might not all be as light-hearted as this one, but couldn't you just see this taking place? Poor Aragorn!
Antane · 22 January 2006 · Chapter 1: A Moment in the Morning in Bree
Cute! Such innocent hobbits! Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
Author's reply
Hi, Antane! Forgive the late (very late) response. This story was a lot of fun to write ... those four pairs of huge eyes watching poor Aragorn's every move. It's a wonder he didn't accidently cut his throat!
