I was sure that it did have to be Saruman--the trap didn't have the same sort of feel about it that Sauron's traps did. And it did rather remind me of "Mind to Mind". I love Pippin in this, so observant of the feelings and needs of others. His getting the wet cloth for Aragorn's eyes reminded me of the sweet scene in the EE version of the movie, when he pours a cup of water and takes it to Gandalf. He's such a thoughtful and loving lad. And Merry and his maps...these two are getting ready to prove themselves, even though they don't know it. Poor Boromir. The Ring is trying to get at him through his pity for Frodo and the other hobbits...
aprilkat · 20 October 2005 · Chapter 3: Light and Shadow
This is a wonderful chapter showing the strengths of each hobbit. It's also telling how the power of the Ring can distort what is good and true for its own devices, such as Boromir's affection and concern for the hobbits. It takes his own sharp observations and perverts them - no wonder people can't tell when they are under the Ringspell, since it speaks to them in terms of their own good impulses. Yes, everything IS after poor Frodo!
French Pony · 20 October 2005 · Chapter 3: Light and Shadow
There were two details here that were wonderful. The first is Pippin getting a wet rag for Aragorn's eyes when everyone else is taking care of Frodo. The second is Boromir's Ring-heightened worry about the Hobbits. They're wonderful details because they show without coming out and saying it how much the Company has come to care for and depend on each other. That is their greatest strength and their greatest weakness all at once. It's what keeps them together and sane, but it's also the chink that the Ring will use to take Boromir.
SlightlyTookish · 20 October 2005 · Chapter 3: Light and Shadow
Oh, I love protective!Boromir so much! I know he wanted nothing but the best for the hobbits. And I love how quick-thinking Pippin was about putting the wet rag over Aragorn's eyes. Surely there is a story behind that? *grin*
harrowcat · 20 October 2005 · Chapter 3: Light and Shadow
Oh poor Boromir. Full of best intentions - or so he thinks. And Pippin - Full of restless energy and then sleeping like a log, typical youngster!
Garnet Took · 20 October 2005 · Chapter 3: Light and Shadow
That was good. I could just see Boromir reasoning things through in his own mind exactly like that. In his own mind he had nothing but good intentions, but he couldn't see that he was really being manipulated. I like your Pippin and Merry so much. They are believable and don't come off as inept comic relief. They can be as smart and resourceful as anyone else in the Fellowship. Yes, everything came a lot clearer after reading this chapter.:) Thanks.

>Yet I need to speak to him alone, somehow. Surely he must grow weary of this burden. Surely I can make him understand that there are other paths open to him other than taking the Ring to the Fire. It is he who puts the others in danger. How can I protect them when he makes such a choice? D'you know, I know what happens to Boromir. We all know what happens to Boromir. It hasn't stopped me yelling "No! Boromir! No! See sense! Come back to the light! Do not be seduced by the Dark Side! No! Boromir! COme back!" Oh well. Another lovely chapter, hurrah! I do value that you pause for proper reflection after your "action" chapters, it's always nice to have the characters chatting and thinking and rounding themselves out a bit more. A chapter a week sounds good to me! Gaya xxx

dwarftacular · 18 October 2005 · Chapter 1: The Dragon
This is a very exiting story. I especially like Merry's wisdom compared to Pippin's. Also Sam's discomfort concerning boats. Realy great fic. I can't wait to read the rest. It's dwarftacular! :-)
Gayalondiel · 18 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
I remember this! At least, I remember Sam's wise words from the first chapter being quoted at me at a needy time... how very appropriate that I decided this little bit of fic would be sensible reading to cheer me up at lunchtime. I'm not convinced that sentence made sense. Anyway, thank you thank you for the revision! It's comfortable and yet compelling, and I have an idea about where you're going but I'm still dying for the next chapter... *hugs* Gaya xxx

Now I remember this story!!! Oooh goody! I am looking forward to this :) Thank you for redoing it. A tired Ranger - only fair he should feel like the rest of us at least some of the time. LOL
Lady Jaina · 15 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
Another amazing job as usually. This is very intriguing. I cannot wait to see more. As always, excellent work.
Anso the Hobbit · 15 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
Now, what did just happen? That was rather scary if you ask me. How could that smoke come so suddenly?
lindahoyland · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
This was a very exciting chapter.I loved Aragorn's courage in rescuing Frodo and I'm thrilled to hear that you plan to include more Aragorn and Hobbit sweet moments.Your stories are a joy !
Breon Briarwood · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
Strange happenings indeed! *wondering if they will be able to flee*
Larner · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
The Enemy certainly has designs upon Frodo, complete with fire and the Ringspell seeking to take him. Glad he's with folks able to help him fight it; and it sounds as if Aragorn also is prone to whatever spell is being used. Confusion and desire are the dragon's weapons....
Armariel · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
I really, really like Fellowship stories. Now can't wait till the next part!
Dreamflower · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
Interesting! An illusion of Gandalf? Or was he perhaps seeing Saruman there? Saruman is definitely on the prowl at this time and still hoping to get his hands on the Ring...
harrowcat · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
I can hear spooky music again! I love the way that the ring resonds to the heat of the fire. But best of all was Pippin and Merry in the boat. Pippin expecting to have been sent home! Keep it coming!
Andrea · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
That's definitely the work of Saruman! That malicious wizard! The fellowship should be wary indeed, for an evil wizard who controls the forces of nature is a powerful enemy. Poor Frodo, I would have wished him, that he'd really found Gandalf!
TheHobbitWaffle · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
*hums happily* Angst. Frodo Angstish. Neee hee hee hee. Another lovely chapter! Merry continued, “Really, Pip what did you do all that time in Rivendell? There were maps all over the place.” “I didn’t think they’d let me come, you know,” said Pippin quietly. “Even if they let you accompany Frodo, I figured they’d bundle me up right quick and ship me home. Just didn’t seem to be any need to study maps and things.” Merry sat up, taken by Pippin’s serious tone. “Are you still glad Elrond let you come?” ”Yes,” said Pippin firmly. He looked up at the darkening sky and desolate lands about them. “Well, most of the time.” I love Merry being the older cousin. I notice in fanfiction that Sam is mostly the protector of Frodo, but Merry takes it on too when he is with Frodo. In TTT and RotK he isn't with Frodo so you normally notice Sam's devotion, but I think all the Hobbits have that for Frodo. He's just the kind of Hobbit you want to protect. ^^ "We cannot go any further," said Merry to Strider, "I am afraid this has been too much for Frodo. I am dreadfully anxious about him. What are we to do? Do you think they will be able to cure him in Rivendell, if we ever get there?" - FotR
Elwen · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
Straight into the angst. Just as I like it. ;) *Bangs knife and fork on table.* "More!"
Lindelea · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
Whoa! Taking strong hold on self to preclude running to ffnet to read more... Of course it had to be Saruman, and so appropriate, that he had some control over weather. Have seen lightning strike less than 50 yards away. It is quite a sight and sensation... No ordinary fire, and Frodo is still in danger, and the rain has started to fall... Am anxious to find out what happens next.
Amy · 14 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors
Yay, danger quotient rising! *composes self* I mean, oh, dear, what a terrible thing to happen! *cackles* Was that lightning natural? And the tricksy smoke, hmm, they were lucky this time, but they'd better watch out (hooray!). Is it wrong that I just love Aragorn being strangely tired after dashing through the smoke with Frodo on his back? *composes self once again* Ahem.
