i love the way you create a sense of creeping menace here and mention things like how deserted everywhere seems. This is a truly gripping story, I love it.

Oh no...Not Pippin!! Poor Frodo. Another burden on his shoulders. I love your Boromir and how you're writing him. He really wasn't evil, just misguided and the Ring played on that. I adored Boromir reassuring Frodo that he didn't mind Merry and Pippin and he was growing very fond of them. The two youngest really did become *his hobbits* didn't they? Sorry I haven't reviewed in a bit. Been really sick this past month, so...But this story and others on here have helped me keep my mind off of things. BTW, I just got bit by a plot bunny that might fit over at your Shirebunnies site. I'll let you know when I've got it written out. Loving this and looking forward to the next chapter!!

Well, if Frodo can't be captured or enticed away from the others, Saruman will crush him with boulders and hope to find the Ring in the rubble will he? For once the primary focus of the Ring appears to be on one not in the Fellowship, although it still picks at Boromir as the most vulnerable within it. Lovely details.

Baggins Babe · 2 November 2005 · Chapter 5: No Safety

Beautiful moments between Boromir and Frodo. Poor Boromir is fighting it as best he can, and his quick thinking saved Frodo this time. Hope Pip is alright though. This is a very thoughtful look at what effects the Ring would have been having on the Fellowship - fascinating as ever, Shirebound.

Pearl Took · 2 November 2005 · Chapter 5: No Safety

That would be hard on Frodo, to see his fellow hobbits hurt. And poor Boromir with the battle he is fighting within himself. This is so well written :)

LOVELY! I always like to see Boromir portrayed as strong, caring and protective. After all this was the Captain of the White Tower, beloved of his soldiers and his people, before the ring took him.In the book, Boromir says he will go to his city himself if his help to the fellowship has not earned him any company. I suspect he knew for some time that most of them put the ring quest first.

I really love the conversations Boromir had in this chapter, first with Merry and Pippin and then with Frodo. I always enjoy moments between Boromir and the hobbits, and these were great. And eeeeeee, poor Pip! I remember now that you mentioned at the start of this story that there would be Pippin h/c but I'd forgotten and this came as a (very worrisome!) shock to me. I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapter. *leans forward eagerly* Let the Pippin-healing begin! :D

Interesting how Boromir is the one to tell Frodo that Aragorn would go with him to Mordor, rather than to Minas Tirith. And Frodo thinking that he endangers the rest of the Fellowship. So is it the Ring whispering to him that he must leave them for their sakes?

I'm a bit behind on commenting on this fic. I love fics that explore these times on the Quest, the hours and days that passed that Tolkien *didn't* write about. This is a fascinatingly real and canon-like view of what might have transpired. Your characterizations of the Fellowship are just perfect- their voices ring so true to me, and the way you show them interacting with with each other is lovely. I especially love how you are showing the conflict inside Boromir as the Ring takes him over, yet he still struggles to protect and comfort Frodo. Really fantastic writing, Shirebound. Thank you so much!!

Dreamflower · 2 November 2005 · Chapter 5: No Safety

Poor Boromir! The Ring is working on him so subtly, he can scarcely tell. Yet Merry and Pippin are still able to distract him. I loved Merry's observations about Frodo: always different. He had a destiny to fulfill, and that difference was part and parcel of it. Yet underneath it all he still remains a hobbit, and so the differences troubled him. And it is like Merry to have seen it, known it and worried over it, probably all of Frodo's life. Poor Pippin! Who dislodged the boulder? Could it have been Gollum? It looks like we're in for a stretch of Frodo angst, Merry angst, and some Pippin comfort. How sad! *grin*

Gentle Hobbit · 2 November 2005 · Chapter 5: No Safety

I rather liked that little touch where Frodo is shaken by Pippin's injury and Sam observes that he hasn't yet built up coping skills for when someone is hurt, because so far he has always been the one who is hurt!

aprilkat · 2 November 2005 · Chapter 5: No Safety

I like these scenes showing interchanges among different members of the group, especially Boromir. You are doing a good job of showing how rational he thinks he's being about everything - and it seems that way from following his line of thought. The cousins' concern about Frodo is touching (because Frodo never really has fit in, has he?), and for a time they anchor Boromir (until he slips away again). Showing Frodo's shock at seeing another of them hurt reinforces his decision to leave the group soon as well.

French Pony · 2 November 2005 · Chapter 5: No Safety

Boromir is great in this chapter. I love his growing care for Merry and Pippin, as well as his utter lack of interest in the story about The Party. He really seems to deal with the hobbits as grownups, which is a nice change from most hobbit-anybody else interactions. And that moment when Frodo hugged him after the boulder fell must have nearly torn him in two, given what else is preying on his mind.

Cuthalion · 2 November 2005 · Chapter 5: No Safety

That's heartbreaking, Janet. Boromir, getting deeper and deeper into danger by his own unspoken and unacknowledged desire for the ring, and someone bringing the fellowship in even more danger (as if there was not enough danger anyway!) Thrilling and an a very "well composed" way angsty - and poor Pippin!

lovethose hobbits · 1 November 2005 · Chapter 4: Speculations

Such a powerful story, my dear. I simply cannot wait for more. Do not let the shadow blind you to Light, Frodo. It is all around you. It is within you. I think it will be enough to help you when you most need it." What a wonderful way to put it. You have some real treasures in the way you have phrased and written this. I am already considering this to be on the caliber of 'Avalanche'...riveting. I have to say I'd never thought of all of the members of the fellowship being heirs to something....a great point. And our Samwise is to be the Mayor...another heir.

How ever did I miss this story???? What a treat to finally discover it and I sense some h/c coming our way...oh goody, goody, goody!!!

Anso the Hobbit · 31 October 2005 · Chapter 4: Speculations

They are indeed heirs to something almost all of them! I loved the conversation between Aragorn and Frodo. It is not often we get to see Aragorn display fear. Looking forward to more! :D

Grey Wonderer · 30 October 2005 · Chapter 4: Speculations

"You said you would take the Ring,” Gimli reminded him. “Perhaps when we get to the Fire, Frodo, it will not be your task to destroy it. Only to take it there." Wise of Gimli to remind Frodo of this. Frodo's dreams are becoming quite intense. I do wonder what, other than the ring, is the cause. Looking forward to more of this one! I'm all caught up again, now!

Grey Wonderer · 30 October 2005 · Chapter 3: Light and Shadow

After this chapter I don't know who to blame for that fire. I was in agreement that it was Saruman until we got that insight into Boromir's thoughts and now I am wondering if Boromir's thoughts mixed with Frodo's ability to see things that might happen is the cause. Still that doesn't explain Aragorn and Sam being caught up in it all, does it? Mysterious and very enjoyable!

Grey Wonderer · 30 October 2005 · Chapter 2: Smoke and Mirrors

Had been meaning to get back to this for ages now and I am so glad that I did. A very exciting chapter and Frodo's vision of Gandalf was rather spooky. I wonder why Aragorn is so tired and if this is all due to the place they have been forced to stop or if it would have happened anywhere they went? Off to read more.

dwarftacular · 26 October 2005 · Chapter 4: Speculations

Great chapter!!! I love how you show Gimli's and legolas's friendship. I can't wait until the next chapter.

Larner · 26 October 2005 · Chapter 4: Speculations

The foreshadowing of Gollum's role and the guilt that Frodo carries afterward, feeling he has failed, is well depicted. But the feeling the others blame him feels like the dragon again.

harrowcat · 26 October 2005 · Chapter 4: Speculations

Yes - I, too, had noticed the bit about 'heirs'. I wonder how far back Frodo thought of making Sam his heir. I loved the bit about 'when you are King!' and all the rest, of course!

girlofring · 26 October 2005 · Chapter 4: Speculations

It seems as I read each of your chapters, I have read a certain passage before. Are you sure you have never posted any part of this? I really wonder if Frodo trusted his own insight, gifts, to the very end?
