OMG OMG OMG quick! someone throw the guy a rope! Call the fire department! Has the parachute been invented yet? Call the eagles, quick! Somebody's got to do something! Anybody ... anything? Or whatever ... (running around in pointless circles) Wait! Whaddaya mean, a couple of weeks? You don't intend to leave us here, suspended in mid-air, do you? No you don't ... DO YOU?!? *sob* evil!author ;-) Throwing suspicious glance in the direction of the author's note: did I detect the faint hint of a smile here? Might it be possible that you are actually enjoying yourself about this?!? You'd better get back here and update this right now! I mean, Please! (doing a fair bit of grovelling) You can't really want a smashed king and a heartbroken elf...

My dear Rodent, I'm back after a wonderful break in the States - you can imagine how upon returning home after two weeks, I am drowning in work to catch up on, so forgive me for sending out this standard reply to all reviewers - with a personal note thrown in when appropriate. It was so good meeting up with old friends, and the few days revisiting San Francisco were heavenly (despite the fog). I especially loved seeing the Redwood trees - the woods reminded me SO much of Treebeard and Fangorn forest. THANK YOU so much for leaving me a review - I was delighted to be reminded how literal the cliffhanger was for Chapter 21. I apologise for heart attacks, chewed-off fingernails, fogged-up computer screens, etc. :-) I will update as soon as possible, which, unfortunately, might not be for another week - so, "hang in there." Thank you for all the suggestions about parachutes, elf heroics, mattresses, etc. Sad to say, none of those will do any good. Only the next chapter will tell whether Aragorn... you know... survives. Thank you again. Gotta get back to work and to ponder the fate of a falling King and an elf whose heart is close to breaking... Legolass p.s. "Throwing suspicious glance in the direction of the author's note: did I detect the faint hint of a smile here? Might it be possible that you are actually enjoying yourself about this?!?" ---- 'Moi' - enjoying the distress of agonised readers?? No!! *shaking head too vigorously to be believed* :-D

Nooooo, quick throw the man a rope, or a parachute. Call out the fire department, with thier net. I don't suppose you could have had a mattress salesman set up shop, at the bottom. Do something, you must not have a smushed king.

Well Met Legolass, Aahh, life is good. I have a back seat at my orc-torture session and a new post in my favorite story. So I will keep my end of the bargain and review. Great chapter, I have a feeling that Lord Celeborn is going to figure out this mystery and when he does, it's not going to be pretty. Poor Legolas & Elrohir (poor me, I'm going to have a heart attack!!) even though he doesn't have the gift of foresight, he's got to be very worried that his worse nightmare is coming true. Have a wonderful holiday, enjoy yourself and if you're on the east coast visit my home town. NYC, it's a great town

What a wonderful homage to the courage of two little hobbits. Yes, I think all this needed to be said, and who could do so more beautifully! I loved that moment when they stood at the crossroads, and how familiar places can take on different meanings. On their journey Frodo and Sam followed Gollum, and he betrayed them in the lair of Shelob. Now the company is being followed by the Shadow Host, and I can’t help feeling that once again there is treason ahead in that place. Don’t let them go there! A frightened little rodent

Author's reply

Thank you, my dear rodent, for supporting my recognition of Sam and Frodo's courage. And who better to express this than a brave little rodent herself? :-) Oh yes I just love taking bits and pieces of canon and weaving them into this story; it makes me feel like I am honoring Tolkien at the same time. I thought the shadowing of the fallen king's face would provide the perfect opportunity to highlight Legolas' fear again. You think there will be treason ahead, so don't let them go there? Too late - they've started climbing. :-) See you next chapter, frightened furry friend! (Gotta love the alliteration.) Legolass

eliza61 · 7 June 2006 · Chapter 20: Steps in Time

Oh boy, "the faster I go, the behinder I get" So it seems I am a tad bit late with my review. 10 wet noodle lashes for me. Thank you for this chapter, heroes really are found in the most amazing places and I'm glad to see our brave little hobbits get their "kudos". Fine writing as always. I'm still not to trusting of our ghost buddies in the back? I wonder do they have to climb stairs too? Now I know its time to sign off I'm starting to wonder about ghost habits LOL Until next time, (if you post soon, I promise to review much quicker-shamelessy begging) Your friend, Eliza

Author's reply

Rats - my review reply didn't go through! *mutter grumble* Anyway, what I wrote was: Mae govannen, mellon nin. I understand how hectic life can get, orc-torture sessions aside. Life has just got busier for me too, but I did manage to steal time to write up the next chapter; it just needs final touches. God willing, Eliza, I will be in the States from 14th - 25th June, and will try to post the chapter before then. So, keep your promise to review quickly, or you will be sent off to a stone prison like the TF for breaking an oath, lol! By the way, ghosts DON'T do stairs. :-) Thanks for your note on the heroes. They deserve recognition. Legolass

grumpy · 3 June 2006 · Chapter 20: Steps in Time

Very strange about the face of the stone king, being lost is shadows, like that. Very brave of Sam, to go up those stairs again, with the tunnel at the end. Nothing like a long climb, with a bunch of dead guys at your heels.

Author's reply

A strange journey for them indeed: disturbing in some ways, yet moving. The climb is next. Thanks for joining me, grumpy. :-)

Linda Hoyland · 27 May 2006 · Chapter 20: Steps in Time

THe very thought of those steps makes me shudder. You conveyed the atmosphere and the courage of the Hobbitts wonderfully.

Author's reply

Thanks, Linda. I certainly would not want to climb them *shuddering too*. Legolass

vampfan30 · 27 May 2006 · Chapter 20: Steps in Time

hey, ya! still here & lovin' the story. This chapter concerning Sam was just amazing! It is exactly how I would see him returning to the place where he had thought ( for a while ) that his best friend had been killed by a giganamous spider. the inner workings of his gentle mind was right on target, I thought. As for our Prince, he sure is getting anxious about the whole deal, but, who can blame him after the dreams that you have put him through?! Make that boy talk a bit more- if he doesn't, he'll crack! Can't imagine a crazy elf....^_^ & our dear king, bless him for his insightfulness on how to solve the Dead's problems, even at great cost to himself. BRILLIANT!!!!!

Author's reply

Well, maybe our elf won't have a chance to go crazy. ;-) Actually, it was the elf who proposed the idea of getting rid of Shelob as a task the Dead could help with, but the King is certainly willing. Not that they have much choice, poor guys. And yes bless Sam for being willing to help. Thanks for the review, vampfan. Glad you're still here. :-) Legolass

harrowcat · 27 May 2006 · Chapter 20: Steps in Time

I don't know how anyone is coping with this let alone Sam! I am glad that I am along for the journey but awfully glad that I don't have to climb those stairs physically.

Author's reply

You said it all, Harrowcat! Thanks for the review. Legolass

Alison H · 27 May 2006 · Chapter 20: Steps in Time

Ah, dear brave Sam! That was a wonderful tribute to the courage of Sam and the departed Frodo. Each step was a reminder for Sam of the terror he and Frodo had endured and yet he carried on, for Aragorn's sake.Such courage! Your words are so beautifully written and this chapter was exquisite in the way it conveyed Sam's bravery and the darkness that still affected the land.I also felt exhausted by the time the group reached the stairs! I can't wait to read more of this story.Just what will the group encounter when they reach the end of the stairs? Update soon! Ali.

Author's reply

You felt exhausted along with our heroes? Good! That's how I wanted my readers to empathise with them. Thank you for letting me know. :-) And thanks for expressing your appreciation of Sam and Frodo. Legolass

RedSquirrel · 16 May 2006 · Chapter 19: Revelations

umm, the bee - let's just say that my bottom throbbed in sympathy. Gimli does not seem to be particularly fond of annoying, pesky, noisy little animals - be it of the insect or the rodent variety! Why, many many thanks for the dedication, belated or not - but I don't deserve it at all: Faelwen has been there all the time, from 'Once Upon a Strongbow' onwards - not my fault at all! (That's for the Hamille fan club, to be on the safe side ;-) But I love him too, anyways! The new job: hmm, compared to the old one it's definitely paid less well, at least double the amount of work - but it's infinitely more interesting. And the boss is, umm, if he can be a little difficult, at least his work is just brilliant - definitely not a complete idiot. So, all in all I think I did very well. To change, I mean. I hope that all goes well for you too - and take care of your head! Your rodent

Author's reply

Oh yes hahaha! I remember now! :-D As for Faelwen: oh yes I owe it to you, for you were the one who asked for it. (After the rodent, Hamille fans, lol!) Well, I'm glad you feel good about the change - wonderful. Hope it continues to be good.

RedSquirrel · 16 May 2006 · Chapter 19: Revelations

Yes! Yes! Ahahaaah! So it's Faelwen, is it? Faelwen and Hamille, sitting in a tree-ee... Can I get to be brides-nutty-rodent-maid, can I, huh? I promise I'll even try to behave. I'm really very happy for him. Ah, you are so sweet, you have made my week. That should take his mind of the sea-longing! Of course, it needed nothing less to make him part from Legolas. That, and a command from his prince, however gentle. *pauses* Which means, of course, that he won't be there for the rest of the adventure. *tail drooping* Which is very sad. But of course, Legolas is right - it is only a big, ugly spider, after all. They will kill her, and get rid of the shadow host - won't they? ;-) No hitting Aragorn on the head on the way. :-) I liked that bee, by the way. Did she get thrown out, too? That felt, somehow, familiar. Ha, I get the title (quick as always, ain't I?): revelations about Saruman, and about Legolas dream to Aragorn. But for me, there is another big revelation, about Faelwen! I bet you had that in mind, too! BIG fluffy thanks and hugs for this chapter from your rodent

Author's reply

Oh, my dear rodent, I could kick myself!!! Graaaah!! Would you know: I CREATED FAELWEN AND PUT HER IN THE STORY FOR YOU, but I had to go and forget to dedicate it to you *mutter grumble, mutter grumble* - boink boink boink my own head. Well, I shall have to fix with a belated footnote, and another mention in the next chapter. (Though... there may be someone who will come after you for potentially ending Hamille's bachelorhood; he's gained a little following, lol! Just kidding!) Re the bee --- it seemed familiar? Thrown out? Afraid you lost me there (:-0 - maybe you'll explain if you'd like to? Anyway, you certainly 'got' the title, my friend. What it all means for them, however, remains to be seen. ;-) Thanks and hugs in turn for the review. :-) Legolass Author Reply: And how is your new job coming along? :-)

eliza61 · 15 May 2006 · Chapter 19: Revelations

Mae Govannen Legolass, Ooooh Intrigue & suspense, I love it! 2 juicey chapters to read from my favorite author (I didn't get a chance to review the last one,so it's 10 lashes with a wet noodle for me), chocolate chip muffins for breakfast and no weekly orc session. Life is good! I'm glad Legolas has spoken his fears, I always believed keeping them to himself would hurt him. I think he feels to deeply to go it alone, he needs his friends (as we all do). One thing I like about your portrayal of your characters is that they all have different strengths that support each other. The hobbits (poor Merry, he means well) Hamille, Elhrohir and Elladan each bring their own assests. Aragorn sounds so lost and small, when he ask Legolas "to find him", it just about broke my heart. I did get a kick out of Legolas reminding Lanwil and Hamille that he's still the boss (however gently). Poor Hamille, what a dilemma. I don't know Legolass, I think the shadow host is up to some thing. Our dynamic duo has more than a giant spider to worry about. Lastly, Hugs & daisy for the kind words. Eliza

Author's reply

Mae govannen, my friend, Yay! Glad it's been good for you - choc chip muffins and all (except for what you wrote in your private message). Enjoy it while it lasts! :-) I like that you recognise each character's strength, and yes! I love that Legolas reminds them who's boss when he really wants something to be adhered to. Thank you for noticing! As for Aragorn: I'm SO glad you felt sorry for him there. Didn't you just want to go and comfort him? I don't think he would have shown that vulnerable side to anyone but Arwen and Legolas, and maybe his brothers. After all, he is human. I will reply to your pm via emil but just let me say, Eliza, that there is no greater pleasure in writing these stories than in knowing that they mean enough to some people for them to share them with others. You and Silivren Tinu and Dunadan-von-Numenor (at ff. net) are among those who do that. What you wrote just in your pm made my day. Thank you. And I'm glad YOU are all right. Hugs, Legolass

Linda Hoyland · 13 May 2006 · Chapter 19: Revelations

The involvement of Sauraman makes this scarier than ever. "he could make a fine living as a stage performer!” Should this not read "could have made" as Sauraman is dead by this time? I loved Aragorn and Legolas' scene together when Legolas promised never to foresake his friend and Aragorn's decision still to wear the hair tie. I eagerly await more of this gripping story.

Author's reply

Yes, that was a boo-boo, Linda; I had to change the whole sentence, in fact. Thanks for catching it! And thanks for continuing to read this. Glad the Aragorn-Legolas friendship scenes still meet with the approval of an Aragorn fan. :-) Legolass

Silivren Tinu · 13 May 2006 · Chapter 19: Revelations

I would welcome "the sound of fair elvish voices in the musical speech of the Firstborn", too. *SIGH* It's good to see Elrohir join them, the more elves, the better. ;-) Hm, Aragorn losing his memory for whatever reasons would be a hard blow, especially for all those close to him. It's just how I thought Aragorn would react to hearing about his friend's nightmare. :) I'm really starting to wonder what you are planning for the poor ranger/king. "if I am lost… you will find me?” - *sigh, purrrrr* I love all the trust and the love between them. :) Poor Aragorn, this would really be a dreadful fate, but it will be quite impossible for him to truly get lost while Legolas still lives. It was so sweet that Aragorn kept the cord! *purrrrrs* *clings to Hamille and tries to drag him back* No! I'm sure Legolas will need him! *pouts and watches Hamille ride off* I will miss him, I really like that elf. *sigh* I guess Legolas should better not get into trouble - I wouldn't want Gimli AND Hamille to be after me! *g* I really liked that bee! ;-) Hm, so Saruman had a hand in this, I would never have suspected that. It gives me a rather bad feeling. I wonder what he did to hinder Aragorn from releasing the Dead? There is a lot of dark foreboding in this chapter! Spells, nightmares and spiders... I guess Aragorn and Legolas are going to have a very nice time. :P Another wonderful chapter to purr over! ;-) I'm quite anxiously looking forward to the next one - I hope that spider is at least where it is supposed to be... Hugs, a purring Duckie :)

Author's reply

Lol, I knew you would purr your little throat off, and that Hamille would find a pleading duckie attached to his leg. :D But his father is there; Legolas would be too good a host to keep Hamille away. After all, there are so many of them to face Shelob ..... right? "I wonder what he did to hinder Aragorn from releasing the Dead?" hmmm... what makes you think Saruman would hinder Aragorn from releasing them, huh? ;-) I'll the bee you buzzed over him, lol. Thanks and Hugs, Legolass

Alison H · 13 May 2006 · Chapter 19: Revelations

Hamille is leaving??! Now, call me silly, but that can't be good! Legolas is in better spirits but he may still need Hamille's unwavering support in the days to come.Hamille was so reluctant to leave, too. A burden shared is a burden halved and Legolas' confession to Elrohir then Aragorn about the dream was long overdue.Aragorn's shock was very understandable but he needed to be told.Aragorn's plea that Legolas not leave him if he became lost was just heartbreaking. Will Legolas' dream come true, will Aragorn deny him? There are so many possibilities! Of course, the conversation between Aragorn and Legolas was so moving and filled with sorrow, fear and brotherly love that I had to read it again and again. You write dialogue for Aragorn and Legolas so well. I don't like the threat Saruman left behing regarding Aragorn at all! What did he mean? What exactly are our heroes going to run in to and can Celeborn find a clue to help them? I can't wait for more, Legolass. I'm enjoying this story so much.Thank you for sharing your talent with us. Ali.

Author's reply

Well, Linda, you're not the only one concerned about Hamille leaving. But after all, they're almost there and there's just Shelob left... right? :-) Glad you liked the exchange between Aragorn and Legolas; they mean a lot to each other. Yes, many questions to be answered in the coming chapters. See you then, and thank you very much for your support! Legolass

Saruman's library! *running along the shelves* Books! Oh, yes! I love books! *settling down comfortably on a pile of dusty old manuscripts* I want to help, too! *starting to nibble through the cover of a huge grey volume, wondering very briefly about the suddenly pained expression on the fair face of Lord Celeborn* ... Ah, well - who wants to stay in a musty library on a beautiful day, anyway! Bragor and Dagor are such a wonderful pair, I can just imagine them as a couple of troubleseeking youngsters, bugging the wits out of their elders with their antics. I could almost feel sorry for Gimli, but he didn't need to... *settling down gingerly on somewhat smarting hind quarters* Legolas and Hamille are so sweet together, I loved that reminder of their elfling friendship. And that Aragorn tried to wheedle an answer out of Hamille (I would have tried that, too!) He must be really worried about Legolas. Steward of Gondor seems to be a terrific job, poor Faramir! Where did he pick up some of his language? I would guess that from now on the atmosphere will darken considerably, the closer they get to Mordor. I'm glad they have Merry and Pippin to lighten the mood...

Author's reply

Ah, I should have known a certain rodent would react that way to books, a rodent who - aha! - got spanked eh? :-D Hamille has been a wonderful friend to Legolas since my first story, and I love him. :-) I'd like a friend like that too. As for Faramir's language: let's just say he spent lots of years with his men (he was their captain, after all), plus... stress and frustration do help one become wonderfully creative. *grin* Poor guy. The atmosphere to darken? Now, why would you think that? ;-p Thanks for the company today, my furry friend. Legolass

So the younger dwarves were after the pipeweed. They sort of sound like Merry and Pippin. Whom I am very glad to see have joined Sam, in this quest to get rid of the Aragorn's dead men. Poor Legolas is going to worry himself sick over his dream. Glad that Arwin has sent along some fresh cloths. Looking forward to more.

Author's reply

Yes, Bragor and Dagor are like the Merry and Pippin of Dwarves, aren't they? :-) Why, those two hobbits could even bring cheer to an anxious Legolas! I'll tell Arwen you approve of the clean clothes. *nod nod* Thank you for the review - and I'm wondering if you are grumpy123 at the other site, or another grumpy. In any case, you're both appreciated. :-) Legolass

viggomaniac · 28 April 2006 · Chapter 18: Crossing Thresholds

Hello my friend! Just a very quick hello and review to say I'm enthralled as always with your storytelling ability. Love the bantering between the dwarves as for just a few moments these last few chatpers there was a slight lifting of the tension. Of course, Legolas is still troubled by that horrific dream. (As am I). As always, can't wait to see what happens next. The Evil of Saruman lingers, the lair of Shelob awaits, the tired reviewer shuffles off to sleep.

Author's reply

Well hello, my sleepy friend! I guess you decided to review here because ff.net site is acting up - can't log in at all to post or make changes or review or reply to reviews... :-( Yes, these chapters offered a little reprieve from the tension. The lightness may not last though. As you say, the Evil of Saruman lingers and Shelob awaits. It's going to be back to serious business soon. So - are you Thorongirl no longer at this site? I'm not surprised - all Aragorn fans WILL follow the many-names trend. Thanks much for dropping me a line, viggomaniac/thorongirl/Aragornymph/Estelover/Rangerous... hello legolass, I've read all this story and it's fantastic. Where did you get this beautiful talent?

Author's reply

Oh Nayru - you just sent my ego three miles high, but then, so many of my kind reviewers do. *blush* Thank you! Where this story is concerned: I've been fascinated with the Paths of the Dead since I first read the books - and I just HAD to weave a story around it. I thought about it even as I started my previous "For the Love..." Thank Tolkien for the inspiration of his genius and imagination - I do every time I write. Lovely to hear from you again, Legolass
