· Chapter 70: We take supper and breakfast and go to our rest
In this chapter, I like how Boromir sought to help Sam take care of Bill, and I also like how Frodo sought to take care of Sam.
Author's reply
I think Elrond chose the Walkers with great care. I don't know if he foresaw Boromir's trouble, or not, but Boromir's actions at the breaking of the Fellowship probably, in an uncanny way, saved the Quest by forcing Frodo to the decision he made.
That said, I think all in the Fellowship would have been committed to making things work, and beyond that, Boromir has genuine regard for the pony (for reasons that will come out later, I hope, and if not in this story, perhaps in another), and I love the turnabout of Frodo watching out for Sam.
Thanks!

Dear Bill! Love that he's realizing that Boromir has a good heart, and that Sam is able to accept that he has allies in his love for the doughty pony. And I, too, see Frodo as being convinced to help others so as to make him rest.
Love this!
Author's reply
It is good to see this side of Boromir. Didn't JRRT call him a noble man? I can't remember, but this early in the journey, he was still completely self-possessed.
I think that once Sam saw Boromir's care, and Bill's response, he was able to relax and, yes, accept Boromir as an ally in Bill's care.
(Strider is very... um, sneaky, here... but for that matter, Merry really was shivering cold. So it worked out for the best, for both Merry and Frodo, as it turned out.)
Thanks!

Awww! Such a sweet chapter; even grumpy, the hobbits still take care of one another. And it's good to see Boromir looking out for poor Bill. I'm glad the pony didn't have to eat bitter tree bark for his supper-breakfast (or was it breakfast-supper? I get the two confused.)
Author's reply
I get them confused, too, to tell the truth. But I think this is Supper-breakfast simply because they've been walking all night, and this is the end of their day (thus "supper"), but they're eating at breakfast-time. Perhaps there is actually some meal reflecting that concept in hobbit society already, sensibly named "supper-at-breakfast" and partaken of by those who must work through the night, like nurses or midwives or a farmer watching over a prized cow giving birth.
One thing that hobbits are astonishingly precise about (besides genealogies, that is), and that would be mealtimes.
Thanks!

My heart was breaking for poor hungry Bill until Boromir came to him. What a gentle, lovely encounter between them.
Author's reply
Thank you!
It seemed likely that Bill would have to carry grain as well as rations for the two-legged Walkers, at least while they were walking through the winter landscape. After all, he has to keep up his strength!

I wonder how he'll name the hobbit when Merry finally is!

Poor Bill. What people say can be quite confusing for the poor dear, but he never gives up trying to understand and help where he can.
Author's reply
He never gives up trying to understand. Sometimes language is like a jig-saw puzzle for him... you know the kind of puzzle made so you can fit the wrong piece in and fit wise it goes quite well, only you find later that it doesn't go there at all, but quite some other place entirely.
Thanks!

Ah, how refreshing it is to have a new chapter of this tonight! Poor Bill--trying to appreciate the thoughts of two-legs when they utter what is for a pony sheer nonsense! But he will do what is required of him, we know!
Author's reply
I'm afraid Bill is very literal-minded. Most four-legged beasts are, I find, although the Puppy certainly demonstrates imagination...! We have decided that Giants are quite the most intelligent breed we've ever known. Zoe showed the same keen wit (she could even count quite high for a dog), but we thought she was unique.
I had intended to post a chapter a day to the end (each chapter representing a day), starting on the 25th, when they started, but that plan sort of flew out the window.
Still, working at the next chapter in fits and starts. Maybe I'll get it posted this week.
Thanks!
Author Reply: p.s. say a prayer for the pup, if you think of her. She's lame again for the second time in less than a month, and I'm dearly hoping it's not her hip. The kennel guaranteed her hips if we fed her a fiendishly expensive raw diet... but I'm not sure we could give her up to claim a replacement, if her hips turn out to be bad... I'm hoping it's just having come down wrong from a jumping up trick.

Oh yes! I can easily imagine Merry both chagrined and embarrassed at the injury itself, and at having to be carried by Legolas. And then for Frodo to scold him as well!
I love all the funny names Bill has come up with for the Company; how interesting that only Sam gets his own name!
Author's reply
I'm glad you noticed about the names. Sam is special to Bill, even more special than "my old man" was. Alas, poor Merry. Although Frodo is skating on thin ice, as it were...

Master only laughs, a lovely sound.
Awwww, that makes my heart happy. This journey in the cold and wind must have been miserable, but everyone, Bill included, always does his best.
Author's reply
Yes, doing their best can make misery more bearable, somehow. Knowing how one grumble can multiply to a multitude, I think hobbits are wise in their choosing to "talk light" in the face of heavy matters.
Thanks!

Poor Merry, having knowledge he must not continue walking on such an injury but doing his best to do so anyway, and then to be carried as would be an infant! Bill is quite astute in a wise beast's way.
Author's reply
Poor Merry, indeed! He was probably worried about Pippin slowing them down, and determined to do his best to help his younger cousin along, and then he has to be the one to turn an ankle! Sheesh. Sometimes you just can't catch the breaks. Um, maybe I should rephrase that...
Thanks! Looking forward to seeing you.

Ah! A very likely occurrence given the terrain they have to cover. And of course Merry tries to hide it, and of course he can't fool his observant cousins.
(I love the bit with "supper-breakfast" and "breakfast-supper"! LOL! Especially Frodo and Pippin coming up with the latter simultaneously! Those two are so much alike in some ways!)
Poor Merry! Having Legolas carry him has to be humiliating. I hope that Strider can bind it up and give him a little something for the pain.
Author's reply
Of course!
It's funny (to me at least) that I was wrestling with what to call the meal, and took another peek at the section of "The Ring Goes South" that I'm drawing from, just to glean ideas, and there it was, staring me in the face. Supper-breakfast! I'm so glad JRRT supplied that little detail.
Poor Merry! I'd supply him with comfrey leaves, as I did Ferdi and Estella in the latest chapters of The Rescue, but I don't think Strider would be able to find any this time of year, in this terrain. I'm sure Strider will come up with something, though.
Thanks!

Here I am, leaving another review. :)
Just what did happen "that other time'? Hmmm?
It's really kind of fun seeing things from a point of view other than the nine walkers. It puts a whole new perspective on things.
Author's reply
Here you are, and glad I am to see you!
You know, "that other time" is an actual story, sitting in rough draft on my hard drive. One of these days I will have to drag it out of hiding and polish it up.
I do love to look at a scene from different perspectives. I have been accused of writing the same story over and over, as a matter of fact. Such is life.
Thanks!

I have found that my hobbits tend to talk lighter, the heavier the going, and I think to myself that Master might fly away altogether if he’s not careful
I love that line. :) I'm so relieved that Merry will be tended to now.
Author's reply
Thanks for hitting a highlight. I love JRRT's stating of the original premise, that hobbits talk lightly of troubles -- where does that come out? In the Houses of Healing, is it, with Merry's awakening? It has been too long since I've re-read LOTR. I used to have annual bouts of pneumonia or bad bronchitis, where I had to keep to my bed for a few days at a time, several times each winter, and LOTR made for wonderful comfort reading. It is a mixed blessing to be healthier these days, and as a result, busier. (!)

Good! At least, Merry's ankle will be tended now.
Author's reply
Yes! Merry, I'm sure, would have tried to conceal his injury much longer, even telling himself (while knowing within that he was being a fool) that it would heal on its own, with no trouble to the Company. I'm glad his cousins are so observant, and know him so well.
Thanks!

Author's reply
Oh, you ought to see some of the typos I make, especially when I'm on my phone, which so helpfully supplies auto-corrected words that I don't want to use at all. "Point" for "pony" sounds like par for the course...

Bill is one observant point. He notices that Merry isn't feeling so very merry (and no wonder!), and that he's hurt. Hopefully, Aragorn will also notice that soon! Somebody besides Bill needs to, if Meery isn't going to say anything.
Definitely not a pleasant walk for any of them, but at least Bill's with his hobbits!
Author's reply
I'm afraid Merry's being a bit of an idiot at the moment, actually. He ought to know that an injured ankle, walked on, only becomes more injured...
And yes, Bill's as happy as can be, considering.
Thanks!

Hi! I wanted to review last night, but for some reason I couldn't stay logged in. My computer hates me sometimes.
I love this chapter, showing the caring between Merry and Pippin. We are in uncharted territory now. Two whole weeks to fill before canon takes up the story again. I so look forward to seeing how you fill in that particular gap and seeing Bill's perspective!
Author's reply
Definitely nail-biting time for an author who's a bit compulsive about sticking within canon so much as possible... I do appreciate your letting me bounce ideas off to see if they'd fit. It was a great help!

I haven't been reviewing this story on a regular basis but wanted to say that I love this chapter. Of douse I would. :) The exchanges between not Merry (Merry) and Youngest (Pippin) were wonderful. I feel for poor Merry and hope someone sees to his injury soon.
This is a really fun read.
Author's reply
Thank you!
I know, I've been rather hit or miss on reading and reviewing myself. I was going to carve out a regular writing time in my schedule, once we were all moved in, and I did, but I'm afraid the regular writing time has involved music and not words over the past couple of months. Pity, too, as I had a novel all ready to start for NaNoWriMo -- which, come to think of it, would have crowded out fanfic anyhow. As my mum used to like to say, "Can't win for losing!"
But I am defiantly working at a couple of fun stories this morning... we'll see if I get anything finished enough to post today, before the demands of the day kick in. Got to get to the store today some time to pick up goodies for St. Nicholas morning, for the wee hobbits will be disappointed if they put out their shoes tonight and find them empty in the morning...
Author Reply: (It occurs to me that the wee hobbits must be Bucklanders, or at least influenced by Bucklanders, having shoes to put out, as it were.)

Dear, loving Bill. Oh goodness, I'm already starting to worry about Caradhras.

Oh, I know! Caradhras is looming ahead. And you're in good company. I think Tall Hat is worrying about it, too. I still cannot believe that it's only about three weeks before Bill is separated from the Company. At least, that's what my brain is telling me tonight. Too tired to look it up.

Bless dearest Merry for his concern for Pippin when he is nursing his own sore foot and has to be as cold as his younger cousin. Not the pleasantest start to their journey--that is certain!
Author's reply
Not the pleasantest start, no, but neither Merry nor Pippin has the slightest intention of slowing the party down... tough cores, as Gandalf likely understands. He was the one who argued for them being allowed to go, wasn't he?
It's past my bedtime, so I'm rambling and unfocused, just a bit.
They're calling for ice and snow later this week here, can you believe it? I can't recall snow before Thanksgiving ever before! (Though my memory is fuzzy tonight.)

Oh Bill! Poor thing, the Ford holds dreadful memories for him (and Sam, Merry and Pippin; I think Frodo may have been too out of it to really remember). But it was the perfect time for a little treat.
The journey's only going to get harder as they go on.

Poor Bill, it's a good thing he can't look forward into the future... At least we have the Professor's own word that he comes safely back to Bree, though it's likely through many adventures.

Most appropriate that the Master's own words should be echoed here in Bill's thoughts. Love the pause and the appreciation for Gandalf and Aragorn's presence as well as the reassurance he feels from the care shown him. And of course it would be Frodo himself that would be prepared for the need for the Hobbits to have something to snack upon as they walk. Wonderful pause for refreshment, and blessings upon your new home!
Author's reply
Gandalf and Aragorn understand and appreciate hobbits! I'm sure the other travellers will, as well, in time.
Thank you for the blessings! For some reason the furnace has stopped working (we are still trying to figure out if there might be a reset button somewhere, before calling for a pro), so I appreciate even more the chilly journey the Walkers endured in that first fortnight.

the soft footfalls of the Men and Dwarf, and the latter’s near-voiceless muttering as he stalks along.
I love little details like that. Poor Bill, I never thought about his witnessing the sight and sound of the drowning horses.
Author's reply
Equine memory is an odd thing. They seem to live in the moment, just going along, and then something triggers a strong memory and you have your hands full.
One of the horses I used to ride on a regular basis was suspicious of puddles. Would walk around them if he could get away with it, seeming very casual and unintentional about the whole business. The one time I forced him through a puddle (and there was no room to step around), he took it on himself to jump over the thing, with a great deal more clearance than you would think necessary, as if he expected the puddle to reach up and grab him as he went over.
My own horse was deeply skeptical of puddles, but could be persuaded to walk through them, though she never enjoyed the experience and always made her disdain clear, lifting her hoofs higher than her usual as if trying to keep them out of the water. I think she would have levitated, to keep her feet dry, if such a thing were possible.
Thanks!
