This was such a sweet story. I can see the twins and Glorfindel doing something like this. It was also lovely to see how much Celebrian and Elrond loved each other.

Author's reply

This was great fun to write - I need to write more adolescent twins, I think! Thanks for reading. This is a joyful time to show in the lives of the Imladris elves.

Lady Saruman · 8 February 2006 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

ahahahahahahaha that was SOOOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY! wow, you have a great sense of humor *wipes tears of laughter away from face* i would have given anything, ANYTHING, mind you, to see that scene. well, i would have given 1000 bucks just to see imladris, but now, i would so totally give anything. a tripping accident! well, now we all know that the things we intend to do only turn out to be half as funny as the things that we DON'T intend to do. i can just see celebrian lying on the table with elrond spotless and the twins and glorfindel sprawled out on the floor below. but what a great story. i'm certainly glad erestor laughed. ^_^ i have a new website: www.councilofelrond.com/members/LadySaruman. plz come and visit it in your spare time. and, if you're a member, you can sign my guestbook!!! oh, and on another matter: you know how the author submission thing said that i have to email a completed story to see if it met the requirements of this site? well, the story is almost complete now; i've been making it up along the way. then, when it's done, i can send it and wait for your decision!!! hershey's kisses/hugs, -Lady Saruman ^_*

Elrohir is glad you enjoyed this :D He got over his embarrassment, silly elf.

pipinheart · 28 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Very funny... I thinK Glorfindel enjoyes these games...He involved the twins and it became even more interesting... Elrohir had his foot in the wrong place... Very cute...

Author's reply

Glorfindel lives for these games! I love that description of him as 'fearless and full of joy' - he has already died, so he has little to fear, and he can find joy easily in the smallest of things...perhaps most especially with children, who share that same innocence. And yes, Elrohir...in all of my stories he always seems to have something happen... poor elfling!

Bodkin · 26 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

One itty-bitty mud fight! That's . . . headstrong. Reckless needs more! Much more! And I long to see Ada and Nana dealing with it!

Author's reply

Its funny, when I wrote those scenes of Celebrian's youth, I actually considered many of her misdeeds, having listed some of her recklessness that made her mother appreciate her parents much more! The funny thing was that neither of her parents considered her a difficult child, which tells you something about them!

Bodkin · 26 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

'I was far more reckless,” she confided.' How? How? Please tell us how! '“You must look to Elrond for the inheritance of Elrohir’s comedy!' Ditto!

Author's reply

LOL! Have you forgotten the mud fight? But there are other stories, too. Perhaps Celebrian will tell me more :D I really love writing about her. I am going to break my own heart. And Elrond...well, perhaps Celebrian will tell us a few stories there..or maybe Glorfindel.

Dot · 25 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Wasn't it a silver dress, though?? Or am I imagining things??? :-)

Author's reply

My memory might be as bad as the twins recollection! Their naneth did much more than help (and that slip was intentional), and the slippers were pink. I may have to go back and see what color the dress was, as I don't remember!

LKK · 25 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Delightful! I loved this quick look at Glorfindel in prime form and the adolescent twins. Not mention Celebrian who clearly is Imladris's true ruler. No one, not even Elrond, can tame her. :) There was a real feeling of joy in this story. It reads as if you were having fun writing it. :)

Author's reply

Thank you, Linda. I hope this made you smile, as it did me in writing it. I think Celebrian knows how to manage her husband, but I am inclined to think Elrond might manage her as well - I'll have to ask him! But I like the idea of an utamed Celebrian - in my mind, she is very much the light of Imladris.

Dot · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

What fun! You write humour so well. Has Glorfindel any idea what he’s done by getting the twins involved in the ‘follies’?? Hmm… maybe he does. I see the pink dress incident hasn’t been forgotten, although I think Naneth did a little more than ‘help’ with that ;-) And I’m still laughing at the protests of “I was not naked!”!! I love the differences between the twins – with Elladan all excited about being involved and Elrohir wanting to know *why*… Glorfindel’s answer to Erestor’s claim about the statue in the courtyard was rather, uh, ingenious. I think what I love most about it is the lengths to which he’ll go to help a friend with no thought at all to his own dignity – and the residents of Imladris seem to respond with fond amusement. You know, no matter what story of yours that I read, I seem to end up saying “poor Erestor” at some point! I really did feel bad for him here, though. His melancholy must be deep indeed if it’s affecting him physically. He’s entitled to feel some sense of loneliness and to wallow in it for a while, but I’m glad he accepts the concern of his friends and realises that they’re his family now. I love the idea of Elladan and Elrohir singing the dwarven walking song! Maybe in front of their grandparents… I got completely caught up in the excitement of the twins at the feast! I was just dying to know what OLE would turn out to be but wow, you went one better! Oh, and what a wonderful custom for the young elves to carry out the desserts! Where’d you get that from? My jaw is sore from grinning at the description of what happened. The absolute funniest part has to be Elrohir’s brave “I think this would have been delicious.” LOL! Poor Cook. Elrond still so pristine, trying his best to remain so around his mischievous wife, was just hilarious! And yay, Erestor laughed! So everything was worthwhile. I adore the ending, with Glorfindel’s contentment that everyone he loves is at peace and happy and Erestor not only drawn out of his sadness but openly grateful to his friend. I always love your Erestor and Glorfindel but I think they shine brightest when around each other. You draw their friendship amazingly well, and I was thrilled with this glimpse into the wonderful and rather infamous world of their follies! :-)

Author's reply

Thanks, Dot. You are right- it seems 'Poor Erestor' and 'Poor Elrohir' are a common theme! I am glad you liked this little attempt at humor - Glorfindel is an extremely self assured elf who does not mind in the least having fun poked at him. He claims he won't regret involving the twins, as he is confident he can stay a few steps ahead of them. I say 'we'll see'. Arrogant elf. I am glad you like their friendship - it was born out of the evil times of the Second Age and I think it will endure to the end of time. :)

Eruanneth_Luin · 22 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

From Blue: I am honored that you wrote a story because I asked for one. I do not know about mandates, but that is definitely friendship. I have enjoyed all your stories, but especially Glorfindel, the prankster. Elrond and Celebrían made me feel right at home (my wife does the same to me). You need to work less and write more. From (and Nancy): How did I get in this! Blue laughed so often during the ‘reading’ that I had a hard time keeping a straight face. He said he knew from the moment Glorfindel went to ‘help’ that things were going to get interesting. As always I adore your Elrohir; such a tender-hearted, sweet elfling. Any time you put Glorfindel and Erestor in proximity follies are bound to occur, particularly enjoyable for those not directly involved. It is good to see Elves at play, celebrating, free for a brief time from the ever-present reality of endless war and the ‘long defeat’; peace was a rare, precious gift, a time for love, rejoicing and merriment, creating and begetting. Thank you for the glimpse into life as it should have been for the Firstborn. Glorfindel represents to me a shining example of Elvenkind at its best and brightest. Boldly joyful in the face of uncertain times, true friend, faithful companion, fearless protector, ablaze with the Light of Valinor. Thank you for the visions of Arda-according-to-Tolkien.

Author's reply

Thank you for your kind words - I am truly glad that you both enjoyed it. Glorfindel will want to shake Blue's hand one day, for helping him get more 'screen time'. Fearless and full of joy - definitely. I do love Elrohir too - he is comic relief each time he opens his mouth! I hope the elves had such enjoyment and clean fun as often as they could. Such long lives in a fallen world makes it understandable how melancholy could set it.

DAYNA · 22 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Absolutely wonderful story, Nilmandra! What a lark! I'd love to know what they'd REALLY planned! hee hee!!

Author's reply

I'd love to know, too! Glorfindel is withholding that information from me in case he can use it at a later time. Silly elf.

Karri · 22 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Oh, this is marvelous, Nilm. I just adore adore your Glorfindel, and he is always at his best when Erestor's around, too. Very entertaining! :-)

Author's reply

I am glad you like Glorfindel - he is too. He preens under all this attention. I am glad you found it entertaining - I fear writing comedy and humor is not my strong suit, but Glorfindel as uusual, saved the day.

paranoidangel · 22 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

That was funny. I could see the pudding mishap coming, but of course none of it gets on Elrond. I love Celebrian's method of Elrond-management - I can just see his whole family run rings round him. And now I have this fabulous mental image of Glorfindel standing naked (with a loin-cloth) in the fountain with a dove on his head.

Author's reply

Poor Elrond! I rather think he likes his wife managing him, and knows exactly what she is doing. I do wish I knew an artist who could sketch that mental image (tastefully, of course) for me! Thanks for the review.

pereleth · 22 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Yessss! Is this to be taken as an appetizer before HLIII? If so, it works wonders!! When I finished reading this, I went back and re-read the Epilogue of HLII, just to regain that beautiful glimpse of Elrond and Celebrian's relationship. I enjoyed this piece very much. For one thing, the humour is taken very seriously, why, it is a MISSION!, it even has a code name ( OLE, congrat for the choice, it's great fun, even though we can safely say there were no bullfightings in Middle Earth, it suited this piece very well. OLE,OLE y OLE, as they say in the "Plaza" after a good "Faena")So that trick made it all more fun. Glorfindel's lethany "I was NOT naked" was fun too, and the result was hilarious. But, above all, it had a "movie quality" to me, not sure how to put it, but I'll try to explain. You see, you've managed to divide the attention between the clumsy, funny mess and the endearing, soft and tender moment between Elrond and Celebrian. It seems as if a "second camera" were following them and they managed to steal away the whole scene, at least for me. I loved it, and that's what made me run and search for HLII epilogue. I suppose writing the tale of the third age is going to be hard for you, since you've managed to penetrate so deeply in their relationship. Nice and lovely, and...waiting!!! ;-)

Author's reply

I am glad you liked it. Glorfindel is like you - in the midst of the disaster, he saw Elrond and Celebrian and was pleased and amused by them. I love that he is such an observant elf. Glorfindel surely is fearless and full of joy...and OLE just seeemd to fit! I am working on HLIII - the outline, anyway, and you are right - the deeper I delve into Elrond and Celebrians' relationship, the harder those future scenes will be to write. But, I think they will be better for it too. Thanks for the review!

Soledad · 21 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Melancholy is unhealthy for Elves - I like that! But I'd have paid good money to see not-quite-naked Glorfindel, standing in the fountain, with a dove on his head. And what was that with a pink dress? We must have that story, too! I challenge you to write the pink dress story!

Author's reply

Glorfindel should have charged admission! But I am afraid that the twins are not quite remembering the pink dress incident entirely correctly. Their naneth did not help...she did it. It happened in History Lessons chapter 10, on their trip to the waterfall, but they did not learn who had done it until chapter 24. I'm afraid its rather epic and the story of the Glorfindel and Erestor follies are woven throughout several chapters. Thanks for the review!

Antigone Q · 21 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

I enjoyed this story very much, not least because it contained a (not) naked, wet Glorfindel. Wish I could have sketched him, too...

Author's reply

LOL! I would love to see some of those sketches, personally. :)

meckinock · 20 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Love and joy and warmth just permeate this story. It feels like being curled up in a warm, fuzzy blanket in front of a fire. I have to say, first of all, that I cannot remember reading a better grabber for a story - naked ("I was NOT naked") Glorfindel posing in a fountain. Oh, yes, you had me from "hello." The twins' gleeful complicity and Celebrian's slightly more circumspect assistance only added to the delight. Glorfindel's genuine concern for his friend (and his willingness to suffer embarrassment for his sake) was heartwarming, and Erestor's loneliness at being the only member of his family left behind was poignant. I also found his rationale for staying quite intriguing - I have often wondered why Elves chose to stay when a life free of pain and strife was waiting for them on the other side of the sea. The humor and mischief were done just right - one of my favorite parts was this: I agree!" agreed Glorfindel, laughing. "That is why I have enlisted the aid of two who are quite funny, usually when they do not intend to be." The setting for the feast was lovely, and Cook's pride in his creation was so thoughtfully drawn and realistic. I think we all laughed with Erestor at the end. Lovely story, Nilmandra.

Author's reply

I am glad you laughed. Writing humor is hard, and I really hoped it would come across as natural humor, a funny event in everyday life. I love Glorfindel's kind heart, and I love Elrohir's questions. Cook took the destruction of his masterpiece pretty well, too. I bet he'll never ask a warrior to help again. :D

The Karenator · 20 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

I was smiling happily up until I got to the part about the strawberry stuck on Elrohir's forehead, then I just whopped out loud! Glad I'm home alone. What a delightful story. Life in Imladris is never dull. Even the statues are something 'delicious' to behold. What a wonderful snapshot of friends, family and the mischievous natures of certain elves. I'm still laughing.... Karen

Author's reply

It is fun to write something fun during this time of peace in Middle-earth. Glorfindel loves being the center of attention, including the butt of the joke! He really is a fun muse. And I admit, I love Elrohir.

Jay of Lasgalen · 20 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

It was sad to see poor Erestor so downhearted, but very kind of Glorfindel to still want to cheer him up - despite standing naked in the fountain! (Oh, sorry, he wasn't naked, was he? I forgot!) I'm glad he involved the twins as well - and I liked how you showed their closeness, and their distinct personalities at the same time. I knew as soon as you introduced it that someone would drop the magnificent pudding, and make Erestor laugh! I wonder what the original plan was? Jay

Author's reply

Glorfindel is being very coy about the original plan - won't tell me, as he says he may want to use it at a different time. He is really a little too self assured. And I shouldn't laugh, but I love Elrohir. :D

Bodkin · 20 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

Perfect. Although, Glorfindel might think he can control E2 now, but JUST WAIT. And what a gorgeous Celebrian. I just love her method of Elrond-control. (I wonder if Galadriel has learned that it is easier to manage elves with honey?) The adolescent twins are great - I hope you are thinking of writing more about them.

Author's reply

Celebrian is the light of Imladris. And, of course, I am setting things up for HL III (deep sigh). Glad you like G and E2 - G is so self assured that he can laugh at himself harder than anyone...and I can't help but wonder why he included the twins. He knows that Elladan in particular is going to be thinking about follies all the time. Unless that is what Glorfindel wanted? :D

daw the minstrel · 20 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

What a wonderful story! The OLE indeed. I presume that rhymes with what you say at a bull fight. And Glorfindel has no idea of the force he has just unleashed in involving the twins. Well done.

Author's reply

OLE! OLE gets to go down in the books as a successful mission, even if it was never carried out! And yeah...Glorfindel has no idea (or maybe he does) what can of worms he has opened by introducing the twins to follies.

Leaward · 20 February 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel's Folly

This is hilarious! And the best laughs are always the ones unplanned! This is a great read to pick up the spirits. I found myself literally Laughing out Loud! I can just imagine Celebrian being in on the joke, as well as the hijinks the elves must have got up to. Thanks, Nilmandra!

Author's reply

Glad you liked it - I like that Glorfindel is so darn self assured that he laughs harder than anyone else at himself. Talk about a great elf :D And Celebrian...well, she is the light of Imladris.
