Queen Galadriel · 23 April 2006 · Chapter 10: Yule in Hollin
Aww, how sweet! I'm so glad they could have a cheerful Yule (even if it wasn't as cheerful as usual) even on such a dark journey. Very, very well done! God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
Thanks! I was sure the others would try to make things as cheery as possible for them.
Queen Galadriel · 23 April 2006 · Chapter 9: At the Inn in Bree
Lovely to see this through Pippin's eyes. How about Merry's or Sam's? :) For some inexplicable reason this line stands out as almost cosy in the midst of it all: “Pip, we’ll wake Sam. Shush.” I have no idea why; maybe because those words could have been said on any other night. And this is my favourite: Pippin reached across the table and patted his hand. “At least we’re all together. As long as that is so, nothing can really be *that* bad." How like our Pip. God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
I thought that Pippin's POV would be different--Merry's been affected by the Black Breath for the first time, and I am not sure how I would have described his night. And Sam tends to be a sound sleeper. But Pippin had to be badly shaken when he sees his older cousins frightened. It does sound hobbity--I think perhaps this is the beginning of the "hobbitpile"--they are entering unknown territory, and so they begin to huddle together at night for comfort and protection. For "my" hobbits, it is reverting to natural hobbit instinct. It *is* like Pip to be optimistic in spite of it all--that's just the way he is.
Queen Galadriel · 23 April 2006 · Chapter 8: Making Time for Music
Oh, I love it! Can certainly identify with Pippin's missing his music-if I have to go more than a week without touching a piano or penny whistle or something I just go nuts. Legolas really is one of the most wonderful Elves in Middle-earth. :) I could almost hear the music. Beautiful! God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
Yes, my Pippin in particular would miss his music--and that is something Legolas can certainly understand. I'm rather fond of Legolas myself! I'm glad you liked it!
Queen Galadriel · 22 April 2006 · Chapter 5: Wish You Were Here...
Wow. To think that both of those conversations are happening at the same time. Does Frodo know how very much he's missed, I wonder? *sigh* God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
Yes, at the same time. And I do think that he knew how much he'd be missed on such special occasions, yet really he didn't have a choice. *sighs with you*
Queen Galadriel · 22 April 2006 · Chapter 4: Helping the Gaffer
Love the moment with Marigold and her father! That's something you don't see too often. “Oh and aye, lass, they’ll grow all the better for your little hands helping,” her father would say. Awww! God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
I thought it would be fun to show, for just that very reason.
Queen Galadriel · 22 April 2006 · Chapter 2: A Matter of Perspective
A very precious moment between these two. Yes, I can see this. And I love your Bilbo! God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
Thank you. And I am rather inordinately fond of the old fellow myself. *grin*
Queen Galadriel · 22 April 2006 · Chapter 1: Brandy Hall, Hearthside at Yule, S.R. 1349
Oh, what a lovely moment! I can just imagine it-Bilbo telling his tales to a roomful of awed children. It is strange, though, to imagine Frodo's foster-parents and "uncles and aunts" as little children. I'm trying to work my way through here, so I decided just to start at the beginning and read all the ones I haven't read. Then I'll tackle (or finish tackling) "Twice Twenty." :) Off to slip a couple more in! God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
Well, you know, it was nearly another sixty years that Bilbo was around, after he returned from his Adventure, and it was almost fifty before he ever adopted Frodo. There was plenty of time for the previous generation to grow up listening to his tales! I hope that you enjoy them! ((hugs))
Pearl Took · 18 April 2006 · Chapter 98: Five Years Old
I'm late getting to things, my appologies. This is so cute!! " “Did I get you a good present?” he asked, still a little puzzled as to how he had given her something he had never seen before." I can remember feeling that way when I was little! Wonderful!
GamgeeFest · 16 April 2006 · Chapter 62: Whisper of Hope
Merry in a tiff. It doesn't happen very often but he takes it to an art form when it does. The seashell would be a most appropriate gift for Frodo when he returns, for reasons they can't begin to imagine. It saddens me to know that Merry will one day come to hate the sound of the sea, when he takes such delight in it now.
Author's reply
No, it does not happen often. But being stuck in a strange City full of Big Folk, with all the worry of every person he cares about being gone into mortal peril--yeah, I can see why he'd be in the occasional bad mood. I felt the seashell would have been just a little ironical, for that very reason--a sort of bittersweet comfort, though he doesn't know that at the time.
GamgeeFest · 16 April 2006 · Chapter 60: Home at Last
Bilbo's home life will be very much changed now that he's an ill-reputed Adventurer. :) But he had friends like Drogo to see him through this period of transition, and he has all those lovely books of Elrond's to keep him busy.
Author's reply
Yes, it very much is a period of transition for him. He has gone from being a respected and staid Baggins to being considered unstable and unreliable. But he does have Drogo, and he will begin to spend more time among the Brandybucks and the Tooks over the next many years--their less conventional outlook will be more congenial to him. And of course, all those lovely books, and the occasional visit from Gandalf and his Dwarf friends. But it must have been a bit of an unpleasant shock at first.
GamgeeFest · 16 April 2006 · Chapter 59: The Knight Has Been Unruly
I love that you took that little bit of movie fanon and made it Bilbo, Rory and Aladrim who stole the rockets instead! I also love that Pippin was attempting a prison break from his room, though he really should think about what Elessar would do when he finds out. Still, it is good to see a little bit of pre-Quest Pippin emerge.
Author's reply
I have my own little personal "story-internal" explanation for all PJ's boo-boos alterations. You see, at one point on the commentaries he claims that he decided to treat LotR as a historical movie, along the lines of "Zulu" for example, rather than as a fantasy. Well, if that's the case, then what happened was that when they were writing the script, they got hold of some other sources besides the Red Book, such as old songs and collections of tales written down later--and so of course there were contradictions. It just makes sense that if he heard about the fireworks incident, he might think it had happened at the Party, rather than on another occasion. LOL! Doesn't *quite* let him off the hook, but it amuses me to figure out these explanations. *grin* I think that every now and then a bored Pippin might regress just a little bit to earlier behaviors--he *is* still a tweenager, after all, as well as being a Took! And I think he probably hoped to get out of his room for a while without Elessar finding out. Not much hope of it, but he gave it a try anyway!
GamgeeFest · 16 April 2006 · Chapter 58: Waiting for Bilbo
What a sweet pair those two are. I picture Merry as that kid from The Christmas Story, lol. That footprint trick works in dirt and sand too, so they could have still played if there was any of that around. Merry and the riddles was adorable. He loves to show off how clever he is - so long as he doesn't hear one he doesn't know!
Author's reply
I do think they are sweet together. They love each other so much, with Frodo adoring his little cousin and Merry worshipping the ground Frodo walks on. They really do have a lot of fun together. My own older cousin taught me that footprint trick using the fog on the schoolbus window! And I used it once when I needed some wrapping paper for a baby shower and didn't have any--I took some plain leftover bulletin board paper and made them all over it--worked great. Children that age go through a phase when they love repetition, and they love to show off--Merry happened to be going through it at the time! *grin*
EstellaB · 15 April 2006 · Chapter 76: "Learning Curve"
"In an effort to mend matters with his cousin, he had deliberately made a mess of his work, spelling words wrong, blotting the ink, and putting down answers that were blatantly incorrect." This is so true to life-I actually used to do this in an attempt to make a friend feel less inferior than he did. And yup, it made matters worse.
Author's reply
It's true, kids often get hold of the wrong end of the stick sometimes when they try to help. It's well-intentioned, but very often backfires. Poor young Bilbo really wanted to help his cousin feel better. Fortunately, his father was able to help him mend matters.
Queen Galadriel · 10 April 2006 · Chapter 87: Eucatastrophe III: Yuletide in Minas Anor
Oh, how lovely to see everyone celebrating Yule so happily together! Nice to see the lovely carols again as well. And I love the exchange between Faramir, Eowyn and the Hobbits over the children! Pet--that's a sweet nickname for "Petunia." Now I finally get to read the latest in this series! God bless, Galadriel
Author's reply
Yes, I had good fun with this one--it is nice to see everyone together, and happy, and everyone together with those they love. I've got anoter bit of this universe percolating along, but it's very different, and I shan't be able to post it here, as it will be a cross-over...
Periantari · 8 April 2006 · Chapter 7: Sam's Mistake
Thanks for directing me in here again--i loved this fic the first time i read it and i love reading it again :) I love Sam comfort! So very much--and i like the "h" detail you put in too. ;) Poor Sam--so glad everyone is there to help him! =) and love how he feels like it's a hassel to bring in a healer---so very much Sam. :)
Author's reply
Yes, even at such a young age, Sam would be worrying about putting Bilbo to too much trouble, wouldn't he! *grin* I'm so glad you found the story worth re-visiting--that's nice to know! Thank you!
GamgeeFest · 2 April 2006 · Chapter 56: A Purpose in Life
Poor Nibs. It couldn't have been easy for him, to be considered too young to help during the Troubles, and watching his older brothers getting to play their parts. And now that the Troubles are over, he still finds himself not knowing where he fits in anymore as his family constantly changes around him. That's a hard spot to be in, but we all go through it.
Author's reply
Yes, it did have to be difficult. I thought it would be good if Pippin could be the one to help him put it in perspective.
GamgeeFest · 1 April 2006 · Chapter 54: Morning at Bucklebury Ferry
Merry very patiently baited Pippin’s hook, as the younger lad was afraid of hurting the worm. ROTF! *wipes tears* Oh my, that was hilarious! He doesn't want to hurt the worm, but he doesn't mind offering it up to the fish! I feel sorry for Mac. :)
Author's reply
No, not at all! It's one thing to have to inflict the pain himself, it's another to feed the fish. After all, he doesn't actually have to *see* the fish eating the worm, LOL! Yes, poor Mac, about to get more help than he knows what to do with...
GamgeeFest · 1 April 2006 · Chapter 53: Muffled Conversation
Very like Pippin to offer to give the scarf back to Frodo. It's typical for a child to lose things and not think anything of it. Frodo would have assumed that Primula would just make him another one. He had no way of knowing that her time was so limited and that she'd never have the chance to replace it. Pippin, on the other hand, knew when Frodo gave him the scarf that Frodo intended it as a good-bye present, and so he cherished and protected it from the start, and never took for granted the meaning behind the gift.
Author's reply
Very insightful, and very, very true. Pippin did cherish it always, and think how much more he will cherish it in a couple of years... I can see him, at that point, putting it carefully away to be preserved as a memento of the beloved cousin who is gone, and maybe taking it out one day to show little Faramir, and telling him the story behind it.
GamgeeFest · 23 March 2006 · Chapter 52: The Morning After the Night Before
How darling! A night of merriment followed by a day of sleeping under a tree. Wonder if Marigold left Sam there and if so, what she told the Gaffer when she got home! I could just imagine the Gaffer's reaction to that!
Author's reply
*giggle* There are a lot of ways it could have played out, aren't there? *chuckle*
GamgeeFest · 23 March 2006 · Chapter 51: Gandalf Ponders
Well, it's because of their sweet innocent faces and their unsuspecting nature. They're size helps too - no matter how old they are, they always *seem* young and so pouts and big eyes always work to their advantage! lol I know I've been enspelled. Good to know I'm in good company.
Author's reply
Well, yes, all of that. And... At least my theory is, they were also granted an extra measure of charm and charisma--works wonders in getting the Big Folk to protect them, LOL!
GamgeeFest · 23 March 2006 · Chapter 49: Moving Day
What a sad day for the Tooks. I could feel Paladin's reluctance of sending his children away, and the uncertainity of it all. It's almost like the children are losing their family, even if only for awhile. They'll get used enough to the idea of not knowing when they'll be going home after a week or two, but it will still be hard to not *know* when they'll all be together again, and then on top of that, together at the Smials and not home.
Author's reply
Yes, this is indeed a very sad time for them--Paladin has always known what his duty would call for, but he'd hoped to put it off a good deal longer, at least until Pippin was almost of age. And after the dreadful experience Pearl had when Lalia died, Paladin and Eglantine are going to take no chances of exposing their children to more of that until they have the reins of the Great Smials well in hand. One day, I'm going to do some stories of the year the family spent apart...
GamgeeFest · 23 March 2006 · Chapter 48: The Apples Don't Fall Far From the Tree
I can just see Fam and Perry listening to tales of their fathers' youths and storing information away for later use. Too bad their raid went so horribly wrong. As if the dogs weren't bad enough, the rain and then Perry's illness afterward made it just that much worse. Loved this little glimpse into the "future" of our hobbits.
Author's reply
This was my first time to write of our lads' "next generation", so I am glad you like this version. I like to think of their sons as carrying on the fathers' friendship. Yes, this little bit of mischief did go rather dreadfully awry, didn't it? I guess Merry and Pippin learned the hard way to watch what they said and how they said it!
Grey Wonderer · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 100: Spring Quickening
Mint! Very nice. I love how Merry wanted to know 'how Diamond knew she was pregnant' and Estella's response to it all.
Author's reply
Well, of course, Merry's question was more out of surprise, rather than really not understanding the information, but I do think Estella would have teased him about it, don't you? *grin*
Baggins Babe · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 100: Spring Quickening
Ah! A delightful look at the inhabitants of Crickhollow. I love tales of the hobbits just being hobbity, and this was perfect. Nice to have some recipes too - I'm sure they'll find plenty of uses for all that mint.
Author's reply
I'm sure they will, LOL! I like to show them just being hobbity, as well--there's something so relaxing about it.
