"He gave a start to hear her calling him by his Outland title. He peered at her to see if she was being sarcastic. But her eyes twinkled a bit, and she was suppressing a smile.
“I’ve been hearing stories about you.”
“Oh.” Probably Estella. That was hopeful.
Just then there came a knock at the sitting room door, and one of the servants stuck her head in. “Miss Diamond? Mistress Appleblossom’s asked me to find you. Moss Heathertoes is all broke out in spots.”
Yeay!! Diamond seems to have made a decision--and a very good one, at that! I'm looking forward to everything blossoming between these two...but it looks as though there might be a wee problem first. Diamond will have to attend to the youngster(s) breaking out with spotted-fever, which Diamond hasn't been exposed to yet. This leads me to wonder at who's healing the healer?? I do love that Estella is befriending Diamond--she *does* need a good friend right now. Beautiful chapter!

Author's reply
Yes, Diamond began by taking Estella's advice to heart. But, yes, that pesky spotted fever will hold things up just a little bit. I had to slow things down just a tad, as my penultimate scene takes place at Yule. I couldn't let the romance progress *too* fast.

"Her little lip trembled, and tears welled up. She turned to look at her uncle.
He held out his arms, “Come here, little flower, Uncle Pip will help you.”
She went over to him, and he gently helped her to fix the string.
Watching, Diamond felt her heart give another treacherous lurch.
Diamond's breaking! Oh, I'd break, too, at watching this sweet, lovable scene! I know that Pip would be a wonderful father--not a perfect one, but a loving presence in the lives of his children--and nieces and nephews!
I see that Estella is yet another Shire lass who has strong character, standing up to her mother the was she does. That is exactly what our lads need in thier future wives; strength and openness.
And Pippin becoming a tad jealous of Estella stealing away his Merry was another fine example of how realistic you paint your Shire canvass. I do enjoy your world of hobbits! Thank you for sharing. :-)
Pippinfan
Author's reply
Yay! You liked the part with little Lyssa! She's such a cute little faunt, and I just know her uncle Pip dotes on her, but she doesn't get a lot of comment. Thank you!
I've always thought Pippin would make a great father, as he had so many wonderful role models, not only his own parents, but Merry's, and Merry and Frodo as well, showed him the way to give firm loving guidance.
I think my Estella is pretty strong. Some people have her as having been in the rebellion, or having been traumatized by ruffians, but I don't think that such experiences are always necessary to having a strong character. Sometimes an ordinary life with fairly ordinary hardships are enough.
I think Pippin *would* feel just a twinge under the circumstances, for it's not like he can console his loneliness with Diamond just yet. But he knows it for what it is, and doesn't let it cause a problem.

"Merry looked up, and the book in his hands dropped to the floor with a thud.
Pippin grinned at him. “Cousin, I ask you, is that any way to treat our illustrious ancestor?”
Merry didn’t answer. He didn’t even hear him."
ROTFL!! Oh, to picture this in my head was hilarious! Nothing gets Merry's attention faster than his beautiful Estella! I am so loving this--and you are so talented at these romances! My favorite genre of movies is romantic-comedy, so all of this is right up my alley.
"She risked a smile at him. His eyes widened at the sight of her dimples, and he gave an audible sigh.
Pippin is too much! It is so fun to watch him make the moves on Diamond. And though I won't say its fun to watch her struggle against her feelings, but watching Diamond unfold like rose in blossom is fantastic.
Another bit I never tire of reading in fics is how folks entertained themselves "back then". Oh, yeah, they were trying to stave off Pippin's bundle of energy, but to ask someone to sing or to play an instrument to pass the time/entertain guests--was typical.
LOL, and the scene where Paladin brought in his version of being occupied was great! Nothing like cheap/free labor!
This was another one of those chapters where everything just grabbed at me, and I enjoyed every word of it. I'm enjoying this entire story so far, and I have absolutely no doubt that the rest will be just as wonderful.
Sorry for the late review--the end of the work week gets a bit busy for me and this week I got a little lazy. Can't say that it won't happen again, lol, because it most likely will, but I'm hooked on this tale like Diamond is to Pippin, so I'm here 'til the end, my friend. :-)

I'm so glad you like the way the courtships are playing out. Merry/Estella were pretty much an established couple by the end of "Reckoning", though they've still got a ways to go before they tie the knot.
Pippin is one determined Took, and as soon as he figures out what's holding Diamond back, he will be unstoppable.
In these days of instant entertainment, available at the click of a mouse or the push of a button on a remote, we tend to forget that people enjoyed music just as much as before it was readily available--it's just that they had to provide it themselves. And trust Paladin to find something to work on to pass the time.
I am so glad you are enjoying this!

"Pippin gave out a short surprised bark of laughter. “Tenacious? That’s the best word for Merry I have ever heard!”

Ah, looks like you're going to cover Frodo's eventual decision to leave--and his departure? This part is going to be so sad...
But on the upside, there is a lovely apprentice who is absorbing all of what Pippin is about--and *this* is absolutely fun!
Pippinfan

Tenacious is a much more polite word than pig-headed, wouldn't you say? LOL! And yes, both cousins have their share, as does a certain Baggins cousin as well.
Not cover it so much as foreshadow it. There's no getting away from canon--unless you go AU (Which I did in "Eucatastrophe")--and Frodo *will* make that decision, JRRT said so.

These poor, sweet hobbits can't catch a break, can they? :-D I hope you can see that I'm enjoying the Weathertop moments? I can be morbid, I suppose.
I really like Diamond's frankness with her mistress; shows courage and strength in her personality--both of which will highlight Pippin's. I think she's hooked, if you ask me! ;-)
Pippinfan
Author's reply
Well, I knew from the timing of the story that it would overlap Frodo's canonical anniversary illness, so I had to deal with that, and it gave me a chance to explore the idea that Merry might be affected by Frodo's distress. And of course you can be morbid if you like--although I think it is not so much morbidity, as an anticipation of events. That's one thing about writing fanfic--you know what's going to ulitmately happen.
I'm glad you are seeing these qualities in Diamond, it's how I think she would *have* to be, to be worthy of Pippin.

Little Lyssa is sooo darling! I love that name, too! I can't wait for Pippin and Diamond to have wee ones of their own--I have this distinct feeling that Pippin would be a very good father, mostly because he is so childlike himself.
I also enjoyed that last bit between Merry and Pippin; great detail and a very tender moment. Poor Merry.
Pippinfan
Author's reply
I rather like little Lyssa myself. "Lyssa" is short for Alyssum, which is a rather pretty little flower, and I thought a very nice hobbity lass name. I am quite sure that Pippin is a wonderful father--he's had so many good examples before him of how to be patient and loving with little ones. Not only his own parents, but Merry and Frodo, and Saradoc and Esme, Pearl, and his older Aunties--all of them had their part in his rearing.
Yes, poor Merry. But in this, Pippin *does* understand, for really Merry *has* been doing it all his life, and allowing Merry to take care of him is one way in which *he* takes care of Merry...

Well, he did seem just a tad smug, didn't he? But considering how hard he worked to get a reaction, he deserves to feel just a little victorious, LOL!
Yes; I had mentioned in "Conspiracy" that Paladin sometimes liked to gamble a bit with the lads, and I had established that hobbits had dicing games. But I had never made mention of cards, so I thought that might be an innovation they could have brought back from the South. And *of course* they are smoking--they're hobbits, LOL! I figure he probably did spend some time with them when he was home. It would just make sense.
I have always believed there was a special connection between the three cousins, and most especially between Merry and Pippin. But they all three know one another so well, and are very aware of one another. In my stories, none of them have to turn around to know if one of the others has approached, or who, and if one of them is in a room, and another knocks on the door, he will automatically know who it is. I don't make a big deal out of it, but if you keep your eyes open you will see it.

Oh my! I don't know where to begin!
I've always loved the hobbitwives myself (Estella is, for some reason, one of my absolute favorite characters in LotR--there's something about her name, I think) & I do so love your Diamond & Stella. They're both so delightfully Tookish & will make their husbands quite happy, I'm sure.
Pippin saving his brother-in-laws was delightful in itself, & I loved his cousins & Sam coming immediatly (& Rosie's courage about letting them go, despite her fear of being alone). The ensuing h/c was delightful, and Frodo scolding Merry about being a "mother hen" sent me into a laughing fit. I scarcely every read Pippin h/c (I'm all about Frodo), but it was fun to see him as a patient for a change.
Lavendar's awe at the amazing healers they had met during their Travels was adorable. Your Diamond's dimples are now branded onto my own, thankyouverymuch.
Merry's initial assessment of Diamond & making sure that she was worthy of his cousin was so endearing. The scene where Pippin wakes up to see Frodo on the bed next to him was so beautiful in that horrible bittersweet way.
Diamond falling for Pippin's "Tookish charm" was lovely. Really, who wouldn't? Opal was an interesting character--I was intrigued by her myself. I love characters who start out horrid & develop into better people (or hobbits). Oh--and the "magic potions from talking trees"... just... xD;
Weaving Frodo & Sam upon the return to Bag End into the story was nice. Merry having an anniversary illness on Oct. 6 was quite interesting, but it made a lot of sense. Oh, and "But that’s all right, he thought. I have enough pain for the both of us." That line... I mean, I don't know what I mean--something about it just ached with all of the sadness of Sam having to care with poor Frodo when things were supposed to have gotten better.
Merry telling Estella all of those romance stories during their courtship was amusingly sweet.
The hobbitwives hitting it off so well right away (I knew she would confide in Estella!) made me grin like crazy. Estella being able to give such wonderful advice was wonderful as well. :)
Diamond handling the spotted fever outbreak so well made me so proud of her. Your Diamond just made me love her right away. Diamond h/c was something I'd never though I'd see, but oh--it was wonderful!
Estella's stubborn refusal to let Merry slip out of telling her the story was so wonderfully Tookish. Though your Rosamunda is quite different than mine, she certainly was amusing. I loved how the poor Tooks had to keep her occupied while Merry & Pip told their story.
And the story & how the girls handled it was so wonderful. I do so love scenes like that. :) It's very good that they know, really.
Pippin's letters were a hoot!
I love that Pippin played the fiddle--it so Pippiny, I suppose. :D
Must mention this before I forget--Pimmie's twins being named Drogo & Primula was so sweet. I loved it. I forgot to mention Pippin's talk with his aunt about Primula earlier, but that was one of my favorite scenes, I think.
And then Frodo's letter in the epilogue. Wo-o-ow. That got me a little teary. & Frodo talking not just to Pippin, but assuring Diamond that her life would be happy as well is so very much like him.
So, yes. I had a bad run-in with a piece of undercooked chicken & the resulting stomach ache was horrible--thank you very much for providing me with such wonderful entertainment during that. :) Hope this review isn't too incoherent.
Author's reply
Heavens! What a lovely review for a story that has been out for a while. I always love seeing new readers for my "older" stories. (LOL! I've only been writing fanfic a year and a half.)
I am so glad you like my Estella and Diamond. I am rather fond of them myself. Too many people make them deliberately unlikeable in some way, especially Diamond, for some reason. Jealousy, I suppose. But I think that Merry and Pippin deserve happy wives and happy marriages. That's part of the reason I wrote this in the first place.
You know you are the first to observe the Tookishness of both wives. Yet that is perfectly canon: Estella was half-Took on her mother's side, and Diamond was of course, a descendant of the Bullroarer himself.
I tend to include all four hobbits in my longer stories whenever feasible. I am all about the four of them and the way they relate to one another, so there is no way a story with this many chapters would *only* be Pippin. I just can't do it. So anyone who loves Frodo, as long as the story is pre-Grey Havens, he will find his way in somehow. (And as you saw in the Epilogue, even after.)
Many of the references in the story tie in to others of mine: Opal is an OC in "A New Reckoning", and Pimmie naming the twins for Frodo's parents is in my story "Tribute".
I am very sorry to hear about your stomach-ache, but I am glad that I was able to help you pass the time profitably.

Finally I`ve come to and through this story and I absolutely adore! I love how you beautifully made this story into a lovestory between Pip and Diamond, and you put me in quite the romantic mood, lol. There are so many lovely little sentences and passages throughout it and it is very enjoyable to read. Like how Pip looks at Diamond, the way Merry writes letters, how Frodo knows his cousins so thoroughly in-and-out (his letter in the epilogue was brilliant and almost broguth me to tears), how you`ve described Diamond, the Tooks, Lavender and everyone. It`s also great to see Sam being treated as he should by everyone, not only Frodo, Pippin and Merry.
I couldn`t help but laugh at how Frodo treats Merry telling him to take a nap and say “say good night Merry” as if he were a child, lol, but Merry needs to be taken by the ears sometimes and Frodo is very good at that. Merry worries himself into quite a state over Pippin, even when told not to, but Frodo always knows his Merry. Wonderful! Merry has almost lost his Pip and if he looked out for him to distraction before the quest, he is even more on watch now, knowing what he almost lost. It`s also good to see Frodo happy, I think there are too many stories about sad/worried/ill post-quest Frodo and him behaving as he would before the travels (even if he is changed) is very good to see. Allthough the quest isn`t that far behind and his reaction to talk about it is still rather serioius, Sam`s too. Pippin of course is just his usual charming self and I understand that it`s difficult for Diamond not to fall for him, and it is great to see the friendship between Pippin and Sam too.
It was very interesting to see that Merry was affected on the 6th of October too, not only Frodo. I`ve never seen that before but it is quite logical I think, as Merry was affected by the Black Breath so many times and therefore would feel it when Frodo does. I blame this on the anxiousness for his cousins though. It is very interesting indeed with those cords of friendship you have the healers talk about. Our hobbits are extremely close but I`ve not read anywhere else that any of them can feel how the other is doing when he`s not there, maybe with Merry and Pippin, but not with Merry and Frodo. Very interesting indeed! :) I had to laugh at Estella being what Merry needed, but of course! I was thrilled to finally see Estella in the story too. I like the way you`ve written her too, and Merry needs her.
You have a lightness to your writing that makes even difficult things as injuries easier to read and there is a general air of happiness in this story that I like very much.
I also loved how you gave us your version of how Merry came to find out about the ring. And it is very convenient for Pippin having crutches so that he can watch over Diamond, lol. Talking through the quest with their lasses was really brave of them, and I think both Diamond and Estella loves their lads even more for it.
And the scheming to keep Rosamunda away from Estella and Merry is just priceless, getting both Pippin`s and Merry`s families involved in it.
have I said I so absolutely love this story? Now I want to see Merry and Estella`s wedding, lol!
Hugs and thanks for sharing this with us

What a lovely detailed review of the whole story!
As you know, I love the various relationships between the cousins. Frodo is always, to a certain extent going to be Merry’s “big brother” rather than just his older cousin. I think Frodo knows plenty of tricks for managing Merry, and taking him by the ears (or the elbow, LOL!) is just one of them. Post-Quest Frodo is at his best when he is looking out for others. As long as he can keep his mind off himself, he is able to function almost normally, and to be somewhat happy and content for a time.
My take on Merry is that he is the pivot in the relationships. He is in the middle of the cousins, and close to Sam in age. I do not see that he would have any less sensitivity to Frodo than he would to Pippin, and the occasion of Weathertop would be exacerbated by his own exposure to the Witch-king. Perhaps if he had not already been in a sensitive and worried state of mind it would not have been so marked a reaction.
I’m glad that you like my Estella. I’m rather fond of the lass myself--she’s not so outgoing as some lasses, but she is intelligent and perceptive and very much in love with Merry.
I am not the sort of writer who likes to wallow in angst. I prefer to measure it out in smaller doses for the most part, and to intersperse it with less serious matter--much like hobbits prefer to take a light-hearted tone. On the other hand, a longer story, for me, cannot be *pure* fluff--I tend to also put in a bit of seriousness into the silly also.
It seemed to me that it was important for these two to let their future wives know what they would be getting into. Although it was hard for them, it was necessary. It seems to me rather odd that either of them would not warn his wife that she might have to listen to the odd nightmare or two!
Poor Rosamunda gets no respect, LOL! Of course, she has no one but herself to blame.
I’ve written *around* Merry’s wedding, in drabbles, but the wedding story itself is on the back burner for now.
Thanks again for your review! I always like hearing your opinion!

Pippin's letters were really quite popular,LOL! I think what made them so sweet was the effect of him writing to her every single day, even if it was only to say he missed her. I think a lot of short notes like that have more of a kick than, say, one long passionate letter.

I had a lot of catching up to do again! I see there is another story of yours here that I need to get on with as well! So many things to catch up on I have to really pace myself!
Pippin speaking with the Healer in Brandy Hall was amusing! He did well in keeping Pippin in line! Good thing Merry can read Pip so well so that he was able to get all the information he needed out of him. Then Pippin didn't have much of a chance to go against healers orders.
All of Pippin's little letters were delightful! That seems like him, to write such short notes but that he always ended with missing her, very nice!
I love the way Paladin treated Diamond. So very sweet, the way he spoke with her in the Inn. She is certainly getting a good deal with the Took family!
I like how you write the parties and all the dancing. It really is a shame things like that aren't done now days! Poor Pippin having to look on while others danced with his lass! At least it was mostly the Master and Thain! Good thing!
I was very glad that you wrote the wedding! A very nice ending and the letter from Frodo was great, I'm glad he at least knew who Pippin was going to marry! Very well done. Such a great story thank you for wonderful read!
I must say mention before closing, I would like to see some of what life is like in Crickhollow with two couples *hint, hint* and did you say that Merry and Estella have a baby? What fun!
Author's reply
Yes, well, Cousin Dody being a relative as well as a healer helps. And Merry has learned most of Pippin's little tricks with regards to healers by now.
My Pip's always written rather short letters. Imagine though, getting one short one every day,for a month, instead of a couple of long ones over the same period. That's what makes it romantic, I think.
Paladin is very pleased that Pippin has found such a sensible lass for his potential future daughter-in-law. And he simply likes her, as well.
Well, things like that *are* done nowadays. With the exception of "Circle of Joy" which exists only in my head, all those dances are ones that we do at revels at SCA events. "Southfarthing Brawl" is one called "Maltese Bransle" (pronounced "brawl"); the "Tangle Dance" is "Tangle Bransle"; "Exchanges is one that is called "Hole-in-the-Wall" and "Candles" is really "John Tallow's Canon" and a favorite of mine. I'm simply not skilled enough to make anything that complex up from scratch.
I thought it would be nice for Diamond to get to dance, and Pippin's father and uncle were kind enough to oblige.
The epilogue was one of the few things I had planned from the very start of the story. I really wanted for Frodo to have met Pippin's future wife--that was the main reason that I tampered with her age, so she would be old enough for that at least. I think that it would have reassured him that Pip was going to be all right.
I may do a story or two like that somewhere down the line. And yes, by this time, there is also a tiny Brandybuck there. I haven't decided yet if it is a lad or a lass. You are the only one who seems to have noticed that so far!

Were you crying as you wrote this? I had tears streaming down my face as I read it. What words can express the feelings between the cousins? Or how they must have felt when he left. I can't seem to find any to write.
What a truly beautiful way to end the story, though. It sums it all up doesn't it? You are such an amazing author. Do you write anything besides fan fictions? An excellent story.
Now, I must end with a quote that goes with the epilogue, I think, quite well:
"Use well the days."
Author's reply
No, not really crying, but I felt like it. It just breaks my heart for Merry, Pippin and Sam to think of Frodo leaving them.
I am blushing at all your compliments. I do only write LotR fanfics as far as fiction goes. I have had a couple of non-fiction things published in the ancient past. When I was in high school and college, I did do some original stuff, but right now I truly don't want to do anything but wallow in hobbits.
That is a good quote--and I thank you so much for your lovely reviews!

YES!!!!!!!!! Finally! A kiss, a most passionate lovely kiss under the stars during the festive Yule season! How romantic! (I'm so glad it was under the stars. That added such a beautiful touch.) They were meant for each other.
Did you think of those dances yourself? Or did you learn them somewhere. Anyway they sounded like fun:)
Author's reply
The scene with the kiss was actually the first part of the story that I wrote. When I started, I had three things in my head: Pippin waking up to see Diamond's eyes above his face, the kiss scene, and the epilogue. Everything else was filler.
The dances are all real dances, except for "Circle of Joy" that I see in my head. But they have different names. "Candles" is really "John Tallow's Canon", and a favorite of mine. "Exchanges" is really "Hole in the Wall", the "Tangle Dance" is the "Tangle Bransle" (pronounced "brawl) and the "Southfarthing Brawl" is really the "Maltese Bransle". They are all dances that we often do at SCA events.
And yes, they are a lot of fun!

I've not be reviewing as much as I shoul have, but I'm still enjoying this story very much. I'm glad Merry and Estella finally had there conversation with Pippin and Diamond. I liked it how the other family members kept Rosamunda busy :)
Author's reply
I'm glad you like the story! LOL! Keeping Rosamunda busy is turning into the Took family hobby!
