How absolutely unique this story is! I could see it all in my head while I read it. It would make a fantastic adventure series on tv! I couldnt stop reading and it was both rather creepy and humourous. Im absolutely intrigued.
Somehow I feel a bit related to Pippin and Eowyn hahaha.I would have been stupid or curious enough to do the same:D This story makes me think also of my childhood when we ran in the long mazelike corridors in the basement of the large block of flats we lived in. Well it wasnt close to the size of Minis Tiriths citadell but for a small girl it was creepy enough with dank air, dark corners, many Doors, spiderweb and as we thought"scary" neighbours yelling at uS to stop our mischief. This story made me so happy!

WOW! This is such an amazing story! I've never read anything like it before. You had me hooked in the very first chapter, I couldn't stop reading it. It is very orginal and creative. You are a fantastic writer with a great eye for details and such. I really enjoyed reading this story. It will be one that I read over and over again!

A thoroughly delightful work, with a well-framed plot, good dialog, and everyone was in character. Also, since I didn't find this story until after it was finished, I didn't have to wait two years!

Well, I was going to go finish reading this slowly, but I couldn't help myself. ;)
This was a very satisfying read! This genre of story-telling fits very well into the Middle-earth verse, and I actually didn't see it as much of an AU, really.
Admittedly, I expected a lot more Masquerade-related intrigue, but this was still really good - action, intrigue, drama, tragedy, appropriate humour and just the right hint of romance... and all in the course of four days! What more could a reader ask for in a good novella, eh? :D
It was heart-warming to see that Alatarel, Amorth and Ilriya finally achieved some peace - and that bit was beautifully written, by the way! Although, really, the flashbacks in particular were splendidly executed, in terms of their style and evocation of a cold, enigmatic atmosphere.
The ending of the epilogue (and the character of the Librarian really) seems to leave some tantalising possibilities... if you ever do write any more, I will certainly be in line to read/cheerlead!
I'm so glad you stuck by this throughout the two years (wow!) and finished it, and I wish I could leave a worthy review - in any case, I'd just like to say that it's a been a gripping, thrilling journey, reading this story. Thank you for sharing this with us! :)

· Chapter 11: Chapter Eleven: For Never Was a Story of More Woe
This was such a brilliant chapter that I absolutely had to stop reading and leave a review. I don't read much as far as horror or Gothic novels go, but man, I was holding my breath in anticipation as Lothiriel told her story - very evocative writing, and very scary. And I mean that in a good way!
All in all, I'm really enjoying this story. The plot is unusual, but there really is so much potential for a horror story like this post-Ring War in Minas Tirith, where there are so many shadows of the past still lingering in stone walls. And you've done an excellent job in spinning a gripping tale with interweaving threads (that's still easy to follow!), trying up historical facts with refreshing creativity.
This is very much a story I've always wished I could write (and read, in fanfiction), so I'm going to savour the remaining chapters! Even though the language gets slightly colloquial and jarring on occasion, the characterisations of our main players are still spot-on. (I also want to say, I adore the way you slowly brought Lothiriel into the story!)
I'm probably repeating myself here, but, well, this is such a great story, and I'm pretty damn glad I found it (searching for Faramir fics on this archive, and the title/summary caught my eye :)). Good stuff!! :D!

I just love that librarian!
And you realise you have just committed yourself to writing a series? I am looking forward to finding out just what the librarian has in mind for the next adventure!
Author's reply
The Librarian's a characer, isn't he? :)
Yes, I left it open-ended so I can write another one when I think of it. I think it would be fun to have a series of Middle Earth ghost stories, but I'm finally getting down and dirty with finishing my BA, so it may have to wait a while. I'm glad you like it!

Thank you! I hope the others don't disappoint, they were written a long time ago and aren't quite on the same level as "Masquerade". Enjoy!

Oh, that's a lovely epilogue! How wonderful that the children are taking part in the Masquerade now! And I loved Eowyn's musings on future Adventure--and the mysterious Librarian...
Looks like you are all set up for a *new* story!
Author's reply
I had to leave it open-ended like that; I just couldn't resist. But I think I'm going to take a break from mysteries for awhile, because as fun as it was to write this story, keeping everything straight was exhausting!

Well - that was very brave of Eowyn and Pippin! Or do I mean foolhardy? Considering what else has happened, some members of their team might see their actions as rather reckless!
And you can't leave it at Eowyn remaining silent for ever about the horrors she saw! That is reader-torture! She really needs to tell Faramir and Aragorn. And possibly seek counselling from Gandalf.
But I'm glad the ghosts have been freed to leave their place of imprisonment - and I hope those responsible for their pain have been sent somewhere rather less pleasant.
More, please. When you can.

Congratulations on things in your "Real Life". And, welcome back. TBC? Good. This would be a lovely ending, but there are so many little pieces to put together with the other characters. Arwen can finish her series of balls in peace and joy, now. Perhaps they can get Gandalf to talk a little about what he may have known about those events, at the time, although he had bigger things to be dealing with than just the troubles in the Steward's family. Perhaps a final word from the old Librarian would be nice. And, you have left yourself many little bits of starts for other, future stories. I am sure that there could be as many stories in the Citadel as there are secret rooms. Perhaps not all of them as dark as this one. Aragorn and Pippin both lived long lives, there would be other opportunities for them to be exchanging tales.
As for Eowyn marrying into a family with dark, crazy streaks, her own mother faded away from depression after her father was killed, remember. And, of course, there was Theoden's long, dark journey, aided and encouraged by Grima and Saruman, of course. Both of them have dark pasts. Both of them also had a lot of love in their lives, which gave them the strength to come through. And, they can help each other to stay in the Light from now on.

· Chapter 22: Chapter Twenty-two: I See Thee Weep
I re-read this when the next chapter arrived. I found many lovely little bits to enjoy yet again. Aragorn slipping brandy into Faramir's tea, as he has had a hard day and could use a little pick-up. Faramir's wise declaration that "I love you just the way you are". And, his going to fetch her sword for her. I liked his being there in the room to steady her. I have always thought that they were two opposites who complimented and completed each other. Yes, I have read some good fan-fics trying to pair both of them off to other people, but I never could quite "see" that. I think you write both of them very well.
"in the middle of the night, when most sane people were in bed". People who go seeking adventure need a bit of a crazy streak, I think. I like your Bergil. His mostly grown-up Hobbit mentor has been teaching him well. On the other hand, this is the lad who chose to stay behind and make himself useful in a city about to be under seige, instead of going away with the "children" to safety. I think the adventurous streak was always there. I am glad that you are continueing this.

How lovely to see you've finally found time to update this, dear! It's wonderful--I really like that it is Eowyn and Pippin together putting a final end to the curse. The two of them started it together, long ago, when they found the secret room together, and it's only right and fair that they be the ones to do the deed.
And it was wonderful as well to see the poor shades of Alatariel, Illyria and Amroth freed from their glassy prisons.

Well, I'm hardly one to talk when it comes to long times between updates, so I can hardly fault you. And congrats on getting into the university! :)
Very clever of Pippin and Eowyn, using the sack to keep the pieces from going everywhere. And I really like how you're doing Eowyn in this part-- I'm sure it can't be easy for her either, seeing all the family insanity she's marrying into. Good thing Faramir's not like that. ;)
The TBC at the end surprised me, since it seemed a bit like a story ending. But I'm looking forward to the next part!

it has been months since I read this - one of my very first pieces of fanfiction. Even though it has been a while, ( & I don't have the greatest memory ) you have still managed to keep it amazingly clear & together.I was thrilled to see the note in my box that a new chapter had been written & read it immediately. This is the reason it is on my favorites list, regardless of how long real life has kept you from it..........
BTW, congrats on the acceptance to the university.^_^

Seems I fell rather behind. But I'm caught up now! Poor Faramir, he must be taking it hard, seeing his mother alive and speaking in the mirror. I still think your characterizations of Merry and Pippin are dead-on-- they would be the ones still able to joke around in spite of everything. And I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next, now that Eowyn's broken the mirror.

How charming! The Librarian's house as a combination of Bag end and Rivendell. It so fits the picture you have drawn of the Librarian. I believe that he and Bilbo could have become friends, had they been able to meet?

· Chapter 17: Chapter Seventeen: Finduilas
Chapter 22 just showed up in my box, and I realized I had not read anything past sixteen, yet. So nice to give Faranir some pleasant memories of his mother. Tolkien himself said that Denethor had loved Findiulas, so they must have been happy at first. You are building such lovely tension with hints that other things than the growing shadow led to her death. Even though this has taken two years to grow, keep going! It is still very good.

Very wise of Faramir to love Eowyn for the whole of who she is! Her feistiness is a definite advantage ... most of the time.

Oh, this was great! I loved everyone's determination to be "in on" this task! I was especially tickled by Bergil and the way he stood up to the King. I can imagine him afterwards, telling himself "I can't believe I said that to the King". I wonder, did Pippin tell him of what he'd said to Elrond, or did Bergil come up with that little phrase all on his own.
And it was a good thing Eowyn insisted on her sword!
Now, More! More! *pretty pleeaase*makes pitiful puppy dog face*

· Chapter 21: Chapter Twenty-one: Found
Poor Alatariel. She didn't stand much chance against the wicked wiles of her father and Seregon. Picturing her ghost trapped in the mirror world with lots of scary spectres is horrible, though. She needs to be released - and it seems as if we've got the party to do it.
What kind of servants could watch her die slowly and then go in to retrieve the body! (Scared ones, probably.) I think she would have died of thirst before hunger took her though.
Now to the solution!
