*splutters helplessly with laughter*
Oh, three cheers for the Classic Trek references. I'm a big fan of both Spock and McCoy, so this made my day. Beautiful! And I love just how many strange Americanisms you've throwing in, some of them completely outlandish, some of them cliches, some of them old movie references, and some of them fairly normal things to say that just don't work with Tolkien's world. The sheer variety is amazing. Oh, please continue! This is too good to let lie!
Author's reply
Thank you so much! Yes, the Trek lines seemed tailor-made for this situation.
The story will continue, right up through chapter 8 (whereupon serious Legolas fans might try to do something to my computer. Hope they remember the tranks.)
Glad you're enjoying the story! (and I'm enjoying the reviews!)

I love Legolas' response - what in the over heaven?!
Wonderful juxposition in the story especially the way the hobbits don't "suddenly" start speaking in Americanisms which would sound forced, but with each sentence the slang gets worse ( or better!) Only makes it all the more amusing as they hit their stride.
Poor Merry though - medicine blown up your nose sounds revolting.
Author's reply
I got the medicine blown up the nose from some Star Trek fan fiction I read years and years ago, if you can believe. Looked it up and it's real--some medicine is easily absorbed that way.
Yes, the muddlewort takes some time to take effect, and some time to wear off again. Tried to show that.
Thanks for commenting!

I found this yesterday, and have been eagerly waiting the next chapter. How wonderfully mad. Looove it. It's *awesome*.
Author's reply
Thank you. Must check to see if *awesome* appears in text. If it doesn't, perhaps it ought to. Debated collecting modern slang but realised old-fashioned slang would go better with Tolkien's old-fashioned tone.
Glad you stopped by and left a note!

Oh, this is priceless. So very, very priceless. And as yet another American writer trying to approximate Tolkien, thank you for a wonderful laugh! Absolutely hilarious. The contrast in tone between the affected hobbits and the rest of the Fellowship is brilliant, and the characterization is excellent. At one point I wondered if Legolas sounded *too* formal, but while taking a closer look, I realized it was simply masterful juxtaposition. And the base idea for this story was inspired. Do you realize what an original piece of humor you've got on your hands? I'm so grateful I stumbled across it, and I will be watching eagerly for more updates. Thank you for such a treat!
Author's reply
It was my pleasure. Thanks so much for stopping by!
(And at least no one's likely to notice any accidental Americanisms.)

These are hilarious! I like the way Sam not only is speaking in all sorts of strange idioms, but also keeps forgetting his place and yelling at everyone. I also particularly liked the Pippi Longstocking reference. I became acquainted with Pippi around the same time as the LotR and I got the two names confused a few times, lol.

This is just too funny. There is nothing that will give me a jolt in an otherwise well-written hobbit story than the word "okay". It's so seemingly harmless and useful and automatic, that I have to school myself. However, being an American, I am not necessarily up on other terms. I remember how surprised I was when Marigold gently advised me not to use the word "gotten". And there are other more subtle ones: not to use "sidetracked"--no railroads in Middle-earth; don't say "backpedaled"--no bicycles either. For hobbits, no expressions like "the shoe is on the other foot" or "the other shoe dropped" and only a Brandybuck might say something about being "up the creek without a paddle"! But the stories that are chockful of slang usually can't hold my interest--unless it is humor! Then all bets are off!
Author's reply
Although didn't JRRT himself say something about Bilbo "puffing on the mat like a little engine" (or some words to that effect)?

This is too funny! I LMAO at this and I can assure you that is a great deal of laughing. I only hope poor Merry doesn't die from slang before Strider can cure him. I totally need more of this bitchin' story! So wicked cool!

This is some of the most hilarious story I`ve ever read! I can`t believe that it`s possible to come up with so much great things as you do! Poor hobbits, they do get it rough in this one.

Hee hee! That's hilarious...I've never thought of their not having washcloths in Middle-Earth!! ;-) This is cleverly done. ;-)
Do you have any extra sedatives or anything? I'm a Legolas fan...but not an oh-my-goodness-I-love-Orli-I-must-marry-him fan.... ;-) What exactly will you be doing to him in chapter 8?!?!? ;-)
Author's reply
Have some chocolate; it's the sedative of choice around here. Not only calms you down, but energizes you at the same time. Marvellous stuff.
I cannot give you a glimpse of chapter 8 without spoiling, so I won't. Let's just say you've never quite seen Legolas in this light before.
Thanks for reviewing!

Thanks! Yes you did read this somewhere, and now it's undergoing a few tweaks, being dusted off, and moved to another shelf. Hope you enjoy the revisit.
