What an incredible take on an old superstition, indeed! I, too, had to look up the name of the lake you mentioned, though I had my suspicions. Very sneaky, making me think the Quest was already over with the "people met and dark places" line... Haven't read anything of yours before, so am happy to make your acquaintance!

Chris!! Wow!!! I loved this...I had to look up Nen Hithoel, and almost yelled in surprise! Poor Merry...bad luck indeed! This was great...I was merrily reading along enjoying laughing at Merry and his "good luck" with more cake than he could eat. I recognized the skipping stone at the lake before Moria, but the ones at the end totally floored me...and to think of what was to come for the poor Hobbit! :-) Great story!! linda
