Oh dear. Why do I get the feeling that the boarhunt is going to be more eventful than Legolas's brother would like? I hope he and his new friend won't come to any harm!

The boar hunt will certainly be exciting for Legolas and company. Hopefully Tavaro will survive the excitement as well.

How wonderful that the everyday events in these settlers' lives are exciting for Legolas. He sees the ordinary as extraordinary because it's not routine for him at all. I hope the boar hunt goes well. It might be hard for the kids to obey well in the middle of all the excitement.
Author's reply
This entire experience has probably been a bit of a culture shock for Legolas, though one that he is obviously enjoying immensely. Oh, I think he will find the boar hunt quite exciting, as will those responsible for him.

I simply can not wait to see what trouble these two elflings can find (and with luck the older "elfings" will be able to have some fun as well.)
You did well on this one...
Please keep it up.

Author's reply
I think the idea here is for everybody to have fun, young elflings and old elflings alike. As for trouble, that's almost a given with Legolas around, though with so many new experiences, he may be too distracted to get into trouble, yet.
Thanks for your review.

· Chapter 6: A New Friend
This was a nice chapter. I really enjoyed seeing Tavaro with friends. It seemed like such a normal, natural thing to have a friend and yet it must be hard for the king's sons to do that, as we see with Legolas. This glimpse of ordinary life is good for the kings' sons.
Author's reply
I have often wondered how the Royal Family members can maintain some level of normalcy in their lives. I guess the only way to do it is to get away from it all, literally. It is unfortunate that Thranduil himself doesn't get a chance to get away like his sons.

"I will teach him all I know." uh-oh....
"They will not say no to me." (Truthfully, I would never say no to him either! :-)
Another great chapter...lots of little giggles hidden about! ;-) Those 2 lines above were 2 of the funniest to me...had to laugh aloud, especially about saying no to Legolas...I have often thought that very few would be able to, except his Adar...
I am really beginning to like the 2 guards assigned to Legolas...esp. liked those small smiles they gave when Legolas said he liked just being Legolas...they really seem to be fond of the elfling there.
Roitar won't stay shy and quiet too long with an outgoing, inquisitive adventurer like Legolas for a friend. He seems like a great kid...and Legolas has found someone who likes blood and gore as much as he does...LOL!
Just a nice introduction to Herendil and family (I loved Tavaro's greeting to Vanye...obviously these three know each other very well...maybe grew up together), and a nice set up for some "fun" for Legolas and his new buddy
(you mean they can walk around the settlement!???? Legolas might actually overdose on all that liberty!)
Can't wait for the next chapter..... :-)
linda
Author's reply
If I were Herendil and Vanye, I would be having anxiety attacks knowing that Legolas will be teaching my child "all that he knows", but since they don't know any better, they will continue to be blissfully happy that their son now has a new friend to keep company.
The two guards are used to protecting Thranduil so looking after Legolas must be a totally different experience for them. Somehow I just can't see Thranduil getting into the scrapes that the bratling is so good at doing.
I agree that Legolas must be hyperventilating with all the sudden freedom. Wonder how he will cope when he gets home and have to face all the restrictions placed by his adar.

oooooohhhhhh! Scary stories around the campfire! Life can not get any better than that (unless you have a bunch of elven warriors telling the scary stories....sigh!!!!...and they can protect you when you get all scared!! *vbg, along with another bigger sigh!!!!!) ;-)
This was a great chapter - great interactions all around, not only between Legolas and Tavaro, but also with the other warriors. I can just see Legolas snatching up that last bit of rabbit, and THEN asking if he could have it. I have a 20-year-old bratling that STILL does that...can you believe it??? :-)
The archery contest aptly shows the skills of a young Legolas to be greater than average....oh - and he was even halfway modest about beating his brother (generous of him to acknowledge his bro didn't have his own bow - good kid!!)
The best part tho' had to be the conversation Tavaro had with the patrol captain at the end - it is good to be reminded just how precious the lives are that they protect every day!! Well done, Manderly!

I am sure Legolas would not have by-passed the tales of gore, even given nightmares and all.
I have a 21 year old who routinely snatches food from my plate, not to mention cleaning out whatever private stash I have hidden in the fridge. It's nice to know that I have company.
My vision of the Legolas that I have created is that he is spoiled, but generally though a good kid, otherwise his family would not be so doting if he was truly a brat.
Thanks for reading and reviewing.

Well, you've done it again...you've put this stupid, idiotic grin on my face! LOL I just loved this chappy! It is so full of happiness and brotherly love. *sigh* To be Leggy's brother...*double sigh* Isn't Tavaro lucky to be with Legolas on this trip? ;) Heh, heh!
Well, let's see...parts I liked best. Ah, yes, one of them was Legolas' morbid curiosity of the spiders! LOL He's fascinated by them it seems, though we all know that fascination turns to disgust and a little bit of fear when he's older! Especially when he's almost eaten by them while on his way to warn Feren and Aldeon about the approaching orcs in From Princeling to Warrior.
I loved the way Tavaro teased Legolas that he wouldn't fight an Elfling over a bony piece of rabbit meat. LOL That really got me laughing. I could just see Legolas little hands covered with juices as he asks that question! LOL
And the way Leggy fell asleep against Tavaro while listening to stories...such a perfect way for him to end the night. He's such a typical child yet so extraordinary in so many ways. And the way Tavaro takes care of him and puts him to bed really makes my heart smile. :) Oooh, and of course, before I forget, the dedication that the two guards show in taking care of Leggy and Tavaro is so heartwarming, though I think I've said that before. ;) But, really, it's true. Their devotion to the two princes just shows how much the people and warriors of Mirkwood love the royal family.
Ah, and of course, how could I forget that statement uttered by the captain of the patrol..."It is well that we are reminded, however briefly, of what we are fighting so hard to protect." That was such a nice touch. Kinda reminded me a little of what Peter Jackson set out to do for the battle of Helms Deep. He cut to the women and children hidden in the cave to remind the audience what warriors were fighting for...not just the women and children, but their right to exist. For surely, without women ;) and children, the world of man, er, Elves, heh, heh, would cease to exist. :) Very nice touch with that statement. :)
Wow, Tavaro overslept, huh? LOL I guess Legolas tired him out more than he realized. See, it's a good thing Baragallon and Aradun are along for the ride. Can you imagine the mischief Legolas may have gotten into if he were alone and his brother were sleeping? I cringe to think at that. LOL
Aw, Leggy has such a kind and generous heart. Even though he beat his brother, he made sure to point out that Tavaro did not have his own bow. That was so touchingly sweet. I love Legolas as an adult Elf and I love him even more as an Elfling. *sigh* I don't think he could lose that quality of innocence about him, even if he tried. :)
All right, I think I've blabbed enough about this chappy. LOL Of course, you know me, I can't wait for the next one! :) LOL I can only hope you will hurry with it. :) The road goes ever on and on... ;)
Author's reply
Wow, your review is almost as long as my chapter. Thank you! This was a fun chapter to write. I think I am enjoying myself as much as Legolas. Things always seem so much nicer through a child's eyes.
I like writing about the closeness of the two brothers. I've always thought that if siblings can get along, then everything else will just fall into place.
I don't know whether a warrior such as Tavaro would ever oversleep or sleep so deeply that he is oblivious to all else around him, but I decided to add that little blurb into this chapter anyway.
Legolas is quite the generous little elfling, isn't he in not taking all the credit for the archery challenge.

What a fun evening and morning for Legolas! Tavaro had better hope that Legolas doesn't repeat those stories at home. Thranduil knows everything, remember Tavaro??? And it's nice to see Legolas's skill with a bow, but I'm glad he remembered that Tavaro wasn't using his own bow. That was generous of him.
Author's reply
Legolas must be having the time of his life and Tavaro, not knowing any better yet, is probably enjoying himself as well. I think Tavaro has forgotten that he was the one who told Legolas that Adar knows everything, unless he thinks the statement doesn't apply to him. I am sure no matter what happens, Thranduil will end up knowing everything.

LOL! You certainly captured that youthful excitement with Legolas. I was the same way as a child - especially if it involved an amusement park. The night before a trip to Six Flags I would be completely sleepless and get so excited that my nose would bleed. Happened all the time. (I probably shoudn't admit to that). Anyway, my point is that you captured that restless eagerness spot-on. :)

I remember the first time I was allowed to join a school outing - the sleeplessness the night before and the nausea in the morning was all there for me so I am writing from personal experience. Your nose would bleed? (wow!). At least I didn't have that symptom.

Aw, Leggy's excitement is contagious! LOL I thought for sure, he was going to puke at morning meal. His enthusiasm for going could hardly be contained! And Tavaro taking his time eating his poridge, it's a miracle Leggy didn't just dump it over his head and declare him finished!!! I'm glad Tavaro finally gave in to the little imp, er, I mean, his brother, heh, heh, and finally announced his readiness to leave! LOL
Aldeon's thoughts for Legolas were really sweet. It's too bad that little Elfling never enjoyed the freedom his brothers did. But, I can see why they'd want to keep him as safe as possible, he absolutely adorable! *sigh* ;)
Legolas has such a kind heart. I love the way he rushed back to thank his father and tell him he loved him. That was so sweet! *sniff*
Well, happy story or not, I'm still glad those two guards are with them on this journey. I swear I'm as bad as Thranduil...every time Legolas leaves the palace walls, my stomache clenches up and my heart begins to race with a little aprehension. ;) And yeah, I think Tavaro will be extremely glad for those guards by the end too. Legolas is tiring! LOL
So many little sweet moments in this chappy. ;) I hope you tell a little of how Leggy does sleeping in the tree. After all, it's a new experience for him. Perhaps Tavaro has to sleep next to him? Keep a hand on him? Hmmmm, this could be a wonderful little brotherly comfort scene here. ;)
Anyway, enough with my mindless rambling. Great chappy as usual! It made me smile and sigh an awful lot...pretty much means...I loved it! :) Can't wait for the next one! :) Hurry!!!
Author's reply
I am sure Legolas would have done what you said had Tavaro gone for his fourth bowl of porridge.
I can really sympathize with Aldeon's feelings about Legolas as I feel the same way about how the world is so much different now for my kids than when I was growing up.
Tavaro will be become more and more grateful for the two guards as the journey progresses. Legolas can only stay out of trouble for so long.
I guess I should have described Legolas' experience of sleeping in a tree more, but since I've never slept in a tree before, I really didn't know how to go about describing it. I would think you are right about Tavaro having to sleep close to his brother to make sure the elfling doesn't turn over in his sleep and drop to the ground. That would be some rude awakening.

What a great beginning for this trip. The two brothers are both enjoying themselves, and Legolas is having his great adventure.

Yes, the trip is off to a good start. I think Legolas is too star-struck with being out in the world to get into any trouble just yet and Tavaro must be finding it a change to be in charge of his young brother rather than being under the charge of Feren.

Eeewwwwww! Extra lessons as punishment! A fate worse than...than orcs! Poor Legolas. This chapter had a nice mix of the endearing, adorable Legolas (I love him being Tavaro's slave since ch.2 - if I were Tavaro, I'd definitely milk that situation for all it's worth *vbg*), and the rebellious Legolas (complete with "if looks could kill, Aldeon would be king" and dragging feet!). But you know, Legolas still manages to keep a civil tongue towards his Adar and not compound his problem with disrespect....he seems high spirited, not maliciously getting in trouble just for the heck of it. I think Tavaro and even Thranduil are beginning to see that constant lecturing and keeping the elfling locked up will only spur his rebellious curiosity to greater heights and lengths! Sooooooo, a trip with Tavaro, hmmm? And Tavaro feels like he doesn't need any extra help keeping up with the bratling? Oh my....well, he's not too old to learn a lesson, I suppose.....
linda
Author's reply
Eeewwww is right. It's my guess that Legolas would rather take on orcs anytime than do extra lessons, and I think Thranduil knows that and hence this punishment.
What you said about "if looks could kill, Aldeon would be king" had me laughing. A very apt description of the elfling. I have been on the receiving end of such looks from my kids often enough.
Tavaro may be liberal minded right now but once he gets Legolas all to himself, he might think twice about his ability to handle his little brother. I can't help but think that Thranduil is smirking all the way to bed now that he knows Legolas is off his hands for a while.

I dearly love it when the elves communicate with the trees, and Legolas saying hello to his beloved friends after a long winter was so...so...Legolas. (And very elf-f, too!) This was such an enjoyable chapter for me because of Legolas and Tavaro's interaction. I love it when much older brothers are so caring and understanding of the little ones. Legolas is such a lovable little guy and so glad to see his big brother. Big bro' on the other hand, is well aware that the bratling *vbg* is out past his boundaries..."Does Adar know you are out here? No? I thought not." :-) The whole conversation was priceless, carrying over to the palace and Thranduil! Isn't that just like a kid...Are you hurt?...No?...Was there much blood?...It's a long cut with lots stitches in it! Bloodthirsty little elfling (reminds me of my sons at that age *g*). Just a great chapter!

I am quite relieved that readers like the part of Legolas saying hello to the trees. I wasn't too sure about it when I wrote it. I thought it might had been "too elvish".
I too like close interactions between much older brothers and younger ones. I guess that's why I write about it so much.

Love the image of Legolas being an admiring 'little slave' to his big brothers. Tavaro will be driven to distraction by trying to keep this little monkey safe - and he doesn't stand a chance of success. But at least the elves at home will get a break.
Author's reply
Yes, I think Tavaro will definitely have his hands full being responsible for Legolas, but hopefully he won't come to regret taking his little brother along for this visit. Aw, so poor Leggy gets to leave the palace walls...finally?! He's gonna be happy. Although I think Tavaro is really going to need that Mithril rope to tether his brother to his side! And I know he's probably going to be very thankful for the guards! LOL
That little Elfling's got more energy than he knows what to do with. LOL I loved the way he sulked to his room to do his extra lessons. I could just see his feet dragging...I know mine would have dragged! Extra lessons...blech! :P
And again, Legolas said something about Tavaro's injury that caused the mothering to go to his older brother instead of him. However unintention it was, he's a brilliant little Elfling! LOL But certainly, his fear too is understandable. I'm glad he doesn't brood too much over his brothers safety in the woods...although...I do tend to like a brooding Legolas! Heh, heh!
*sigh* And of course, it's always nice to see Aldeon, even if only briefly. I think he's the one I've come to develop a crush on. Then I'd have to say Feren is next and then Tavaro. Although...this story may change that order. LOL *sigh*

LOL Leave it to Legolas to hug his much missed trees! And it was sweet to see how they hugged him back, at least in their own way! LOL
The reunion between Leggy and his brother was sweet even though he did get scolded for being out on his own. And I loved the way he immediately asked if Feren was all right. Where's Aldeon?
I laughed when Tavaro asked his brother if Legolas had no fear of his king! That was great, for it's true. How many warriors would have dared defy an order from Thranduil? Not too many, if any, I'm sure. Only little Leggy can be so bold and adorable at the same time! LOL
Ah, and I see Tavaro is going to be out of commission for awhile hmmm? He's gonna have his hands full with Legolas soon, no? Can't wait to see what mischief those two can find! Even if it's nothing too dangerous. ;)
LOL Poor Tavor though, Leggy is an expert at diverting attention from himself and using Tavoro's injury to distract Thranduil was sheer brilliance on Legolas' part. He's a pretty smart Elfling, isn't he? LOL Even if if it didn't work for too long! LOL

Legolas is definitely happy now that Tavaro is back. Aldeon will make his appearance in the next chapter, but his role in this story will be limited.
Sometimes I wonder myself how Thranduil can be so patient with this son when he is so impatient with everybody else. I really don't think he would put up with such blatant disobedience from anyone else in the realm.

Just as Legolas is hoping that he will be able to join the warriors soon, Thranduil is wishing that it will be a long time. I think Thranduil needs to try and find some time for Legolas and then perhaps he will loose some of his mischief. Legolas is very young and will eventually learn to grow up, but until then he needs somewhere there to remind him what's right and to learn from mistakes. Thranduil needs Legolas as much as Legolas needs Thranduil.
Nice work.

I agree with you that Thranduil needs to spend more time with Legolas but I guess being the king and a single parent, he must wish that there are more hours to the day. I loved the description of Legolas saying hello to the trees in the spring. You could really feel how much he loved and had missed them. Do you know Robert Frost's poem about the apple orchard settling in for the winter? The speaker says "good night and keep cold" because a thaw would be bad for the trees. I thought of that because Legolas and the trees he greets are at the opposite end of the cycle of the seasons.
Legolas's horse made him do it! What a good excuse. Thranduil doesn't seem impressed though. And I think that Legolas may find lively things to do after all, with his brother home.
Author's reply
I read some of Robert Frost's poems while growing up but I cannot recall the one that you are referring to. Actually the only one that I can remember is one about stopping by the woods on a winter's night. I can't even remember the title (senility strikes). I must try to find a volume of his works. Come to think of it, Frost would have made quite the wood elf.
With his brother home, I don't think Legolas will have a chance to get bored.

Oh, ho! This is a good start to what has all the makings of a great adventure! Legolas on his own... Oh, dear, there's no telling what mischief the youngster will get into out from under the stern, parental eye of his father. How old would the elfling be(in human years) in this story? I'm thinking about 9 or 10? Is that a good guess? Our poor little prince - so "sheltered" and "guarded" and denied freedom from all the restraining fetters of his life Maybe it is time for him to find out what he is "sheltered" and "guarded" from, no? Oh, this is going to be some kind of fun for all involved (well, maybe not for Thranduil).
I'm already hooked on this story, so don't you dare stop here. And I hope you update frequently, cause I'm ready for more!

What an enthusiastic review! Thank you very much. I would place the elfling around 11 or 12 in human years. I would have liked to place him at what you have guessed (9/10) but found that I was making him much more articulate than a 9 or 10 year could ever be, so I have a 11/12 year old elfling in mind as I write.

*does double backflip with three full turns* Woo Hoo! New story, new story! Yay! :) And one with Salque in it! We get to see a little more of that brave, selfless warrior! Yee haw! :D Can you tell I'm happy? LOL
Poor Leggy, with Salque gone, his days will be dreary indeed! Thranduil is always so busy, though it's no fault of his own. Duty calls and the kingdom must come first. A little sad, but, that's the way of the world, at least for royalty.
I hope Aldeon does take care of Leggy while Salque is gone. Leggy interacting with his brothers is always my favorite kind of story. And of all his brothers, Legoas seems so much closer to Aldeon. *sigh*
"Tavaro says that all you have to do is nod and look sympathetic when you listen to the petitioners, and then they will go away happy."
When Leggy said this, I hooted with laughter! I could just see the surprised look on Thranduil's face and whew, I would not have wanted to see what Tavaro's face would have looked like! LOL That was hilarious. Then when Thranduil uttered this...
"It will all depend on how well I nod and look sympathetic when I listen to the petitioners."
OMG...I was rolling on the floor after that line! So perfect!

Immortality certainly has a whole new meaning when one is stuck with a child like Legolas. I think Thranduil has probably used up all his patience with this one child and is therefore impatient with everybody else. Hopefully this Legolas won't come across too bratty (and maybe even likable?).
