elf-girl · 28 July 2004 · Chapter 10: Sadness And Sorrow

WOOOOOOW!!!!what a great story! When I saw "The End" I almost DIE of sadness. But it was one of the best stories that I ever have read before. Congratulations! I am going to allow you in my favourites authors. Bye! Write more stories! (I hope you to understand this because I don't speak English very well) Elf-girl

Author's reply

Thank you! I think you write English *very* well, far better than I could in another language :( I love writing, and have written more stories, I hope you like them as well! I'm glad you liked this.

lwarren · 10 June 2004 · Chapter 10: Sadness And Sorrow

I am so glad that Legolas and Thranduil finally saw each other alive and well! How sad, the trip through a grieving forest and Legolas' growing fear that something was terribly wrong...his grief in the throne room where he looked at the crown and just kind of collapsed with grief, thinking of his father...the joyful reunion *much sniffing and sobbing*...the little discussion with Nifael *g - yes, my L- Legolas*...and the alliterations for the party! *grins and giggles* Too short, Jay, much too short, but a satisfying ending for all concerned! :-) linda

Author's reply

Thank you. Yes, there was sadness and sorrow, angst and anguish, but at the end harmony and happiness! I felt sure that the forest would grieve too, if Thranduil told the trees that Legolas was dead. And 'he is dead' is sufficiently vague to be misunderstood.

JastaElf · 10 June 2004 · Chapter 10: Sadness And Sorrow

YAY!! All's well again!! :-) I really do love this story.... I'm glad neither Legolas nor Thranduil is dead! I couldn't take either.... Thank you for this wonderful story, and for all the stories you write. They make my day!!

Author's reply

Well, despite a blip in 'To The Ends Of Middle Earth', I can't kill them off permanently any more. I've come to love both Legolas and Thranduil far too much, and besides, it wouldn't be canon. I'm so glad you enjoy my stories!

Rose Sared · 10 June 2004 · Chapter 10: Sadness And Sorrow

Oh Jay that was wonderful. Thank you for a great story with tension right up to the end. We leave them to their dancing and dorwininan. Great stuff Rose

Author's reply

The tension and angst are what I like to write best - but I'm soft hearted as well, so love a happy ending! Thank you for the review.

Bodkin · 10 June 2004 · Chapter 10: Sadness And Sorrow

Resolution - ahhh. Thranduil and Legolas are so close, it is hard to see how Legolas can have chosen to go off to Ithilien and leave his father - although I suppose if you are immortal a few years don't matter much and there is no bar on travelling back and forth. Irony at the end - will never want to leave again, but we know better. At least he stands a chance of getting Nifael to stop calling him 'my lord'. I am glad the Man got to see the elves being happy.

Author's reply

I like to think that Legolas and Thranduil did visit each other - after all, Legolas ruled Ithilien for 120 years, which gives enough time even for an immortal. The irony at the end was added to the original intentionally - the sea longing meant he was never really happy anywhere. Have I mentioned I love the way you write Legolas and the twins?

LOTRFaith · 9 June 2004 · Chapter 10: Sadness And Sorrow

I must say that I still laugh a little and tear up a little at the end:-) The misunderstanding, while a terrible thing, is rather funny:-) "I thought you were dead!" lol..... I had to laugh:-) Glad to read this again and read the various changes:-) I loved it the first time I read it, and love it even more after the fifth or sixth time now:-) Great job!

Author's reply

I'm particularly glad that you took the time to review when you'd already read the story before. I hope you like the changes - I think it makes the story better, and makes better links with my other fics. It's supposed to be angsty, but I can see the funny side!

Karri · 9 June 2004 · Chapter 10: Sadness And Sorrow

Shades of Mid Winter Gifts there, with each thinking the other dead. Nice angst, but it was a great relief when Thranduil saw Legolas at last. :-) Great story, Jay.

Author's reply

In Mid Winter Gifts, each thought the other *might* be dead. In this story, they were both certain. You may have noticed, I like angst ... Thanks for the review!

daw the minstrel · 9 June 2004 · Chapter 10: Sadness And Sorrow

Some horrible moments for everyone there! I liked the detail that the forest was mourning too, and Legolas's realization that he was now king. Well, he would have been, but he wasn't. You understand.

Author's reply

I think that both Legolas and Thranduil have a connection with the forest, although Thranduil's is stronger. I think that if Legolas did become king, his link would become equally strong.

lwarren · 7 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Message

Ai!! That poor elf, Nifael, is going to be in so much trouble (or at least embarrassed beyond words) when he wakes up and realizes how his message was misunderstood! He's conscientious to the extreme - and look what it's led to! Poor Thranduil -to hear news about his son like that after that terrible nightmare! Now he's convinced that it's true, and both dream and the message were actually incomplete. The part where he was thinking about Legolas liking the autumn time of year the best brought to mind an old song I dearly love that still makes me cry today...a verse goes like this - "Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way. You always loved this time of year. Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now, 'cause you're not here. A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes, as if to hide a lonely tear. My life will be forever autumn, 'cause you're not here." It just seemed to fit Thranduil somehow, and made me cry with him. *sniff* I foresee more problems in the future for the King and son, but please, can he find out that Legolas is OK, soon? Cannot take too much more of this! Great chapter - nice tricky turn!;-) Thought worst was over, should know better! linda

Author's reply

Ah - Jeff Wayne, 'Forever Autumn' from War of the Worlds. I love that song, but haven't thought of it for years. It does seem appropriate for the elves. Poor Thranduil - there had to be more than just the message to make him believe it, but he's used to sensing when something is wrong with Legolas. Things will be resolved, but will get worse before they get better!

Bodkin · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Message

That elf! What a dummy - why on Arda could he not go back to Imladris and get fixed before returning, or at least allow the human to help him. Stubborn doesn't begin to describe him. Now poor Thranduil is going to have an agonising night believing his little elfling is dead. Still - at least he will be happy when they are reunited. (Why am I sure I have read this before?)

Author's reply

Because you quite possibly have. I posted the original version on ff.net nearly two years ago, but I've been amending each chapter as I post it here, and adding some new scenes. If you read it before, and are still reviewing, THANK YOU!

Anonymous · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Message

Oh now that's just cruel! Very well done. I really never saw this coming.

Author's reply

Poor Thranduil. I feel very sorry for him now. I'm glad you didn't see it coming, but Legolas's original message to Nifael was very carefully worded so that it *could* be misunderstood.

Karri · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Message

Ai! A heartrending chapter, Jay! I hope you won't leave Thranduil thus for long.

Author's reply

Poor Thranduil. He won't suffer for too long - but the angst will go up before the end!

Rose Sared · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Message

That Nifael, bless his little cotton socks, is a menace! Is he ever going to be embarrassed when he wakes up to the devastation his words have innocently caused. Both sad and hilarious, well done Jay. Rose

Author's reply

Poor Nifael - none of this was his fault! He simply delivered a message; it wasn't his fault it was misinterpreted.

daw the minstrel · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Message

Well, angst you promised and angst there is. Poor Thranuil! How truly awful. I can't remember though, Jay. Is Darian a characters from an earlier story, the one about Elrohir etc caring for the sick?

Author's reply

Angst there is indeed, and more before the end! Poor Thranduil. Darian is a new OC, the other story about Elrohir and the plague was set a few hundred years ago (and nearer to Imladris than Lasgalen).

LOTRFaith · 4 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Stone Trolls And Orcs

!! I had forgotten about Nifael:-) Good thing I am re-reading it;-)

Author's reply

You may spot a few changes I've made if you read the original version. There will be an additional scene in the final chapter that a lot of readers requested.

Rose Sared · 4 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Stone Trolls And Orcs

Hope we never meet a cave troll indeed! Ha. Poor little messenger, he may of been annoying but he never deserved this - must of been the red shirt he was wearing How exciting, more - soon Rose

Author's reply

I think the cave troll comment is a case of famous last words. Poor Nifael - you'll have to wait to see what happens when Legolas's message doesn't arrive.

Karri · 3 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Stone Trolls And Orcs

well, that was unexpected! I hope you are not going to kill him off. *sniff* An excellent chapter!

Author's reply

Poor Nifael. And as he's wandered off the path, there's not much chance that Legolas will find him.

daw the minstrel · 3 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Stone Trolls And Orcs

Well that last part certainly changed the tone. Until then,I was enjoying the success of the hunt and the joking among the friends. I assume that's Legolas's letter to Thranduil. Will Legolas catch up with him?

Author's reply

You know me - angst is never far away. There will be repercussions from the missing letter later on. Legolas is several days behind Nifael, and Nifael isn't even on the right track!

lwarren · 2 June 2004 · Chapter 7: The Last Troll

Ah yes, the trials and tribulations of royalty! *snicker* It must be truly vexing to be "my Lorded" at every turn...poor Nifael - he'll be traumatized for life at the rate he's going! I enjoyed the communication from Thranduil...and Legolas' response to the news that the crossing had been repaired ;). Now, I hope Arwen's reflexes are quick, and that the men-folk (what would you call them? - elf-guys?) in her life don't faint dead away when they realize that the "rock" has awakened! *long-suffering sigh* Another cliffie - P-L-E-A-S-E update soon!!!!! linda

Author's reply

Poor Legolas - he hates the 'my Lording'. And poor Nifael - he *will* be traumatised by the time I've finished with him! Arwen is no wilting violet, but I intend to give the males a few nasty moments! Stay tuned for more cliffies.

lwarren · 2 June 2004 · Chapter 6: Rescue

' "You were lucky. I came to see what you were up to. You need looking after." ' Hmmmmm...your pardon, Ernil Legolas, but isn't that something like the pot calling the kettle black? It seems to me that all the "young ones" need a keeper. No wonder Elrond doesn't trust them to stay out of trouble! *vbg* Poor Legolas is going to have a very major phobia with caves by the time the War of the Ring starts...more ammunition for Gimli, tho'! This chapter was very good...a nice mixture of fear and falling ceilings and supposedly dead trolls and heroic (and panicked) Legolas moments and kidnapped Asfolaths and Ellahir and Elrodan (I love those mis-names :) )and Arwen actually in trouble with her Adar. Very entertaining...and Legolas actually stayed pretty much in one piece! *happy dance ;)* linda

Author's reply

Poor Legolas and his cave phobia - but he was very brave in this chapter, even thought he was so scared. It makes him more heroic. And he wasn't even harmed! Arwen and Asfaloth - that was a pure movie-moment, I'm afraid. I couldn't resist it, but didn't think her father would be too pleased.

Rose Sared · 31 May 2004 · Chapter 7: The Last Troll

Ha! So much for elven senses! and I thought I left my characters in 'get out of this then' situations, woman you are wicked. Loved the messenger, laughed out loud. Thanks for the pick me up Rose

Author's reply

Well, I suppose that even Elven instincts can get it wrong sometimes! Poor Nifael, there will be more of him later in this story. Glad you enjoyed it!

daw the minstrel · 31 May 2004 · Chapter 7: The Last Troll

Now that would certainly startle you! I hope Arwen has skipped out of the way. I liked the details about Legolas writing to his father because he knew that Thranduil would worry.

Author's reply

Are you on line all the time, Daw? Because you usually send a review within minutes of me posting! (Not that I'm complaining.) I'm glad you liked the troll's entrance - it seemed a different way to do it! Poor Thranduil will be more than worried later on - but you'll have to wait and see why.

LOTRFaith · 24 May 2004 · Chapter 6: Rescue

lol.... I still laugh when I read about Elrond admonishing Arwen.. :-)

Author's reply

Well, she shouldn't have stolen Glorfindel's horse! And she couldn't even blame the twins this time! ;)

Nilmandra · 24 May 2004 · Chapter 6: Rescue

I am glad Elrond has realized that the whole lot need to be looked after :-). Picturing a cave troll and then imagining fighting one is enough to make me glad we only write about this world. Arwen is brave - but for as much as I'd like to claim I'd be back in the safety of Imladris, in my younger days I'd have gone with too! As for 'borrowing' Asfaloth....well I have a solution for that. Glorfindel said that Asfaloth would never let fall anyone he commanded the horse to carry. Perhaps he can convince Asfaloth to buck her off once. :D Bad me, I know...

Author's reply

If Glorfindel *did* try that, it didn't work, did it? It didn't stop her! And I agree with you - writing this is one thing, doing it would be quite another.

daw the minstrel · 24 May 2004 · Chapter 6: Rescue

Very amusing about Asfaloth, Jay. It's occurred to me that your stories give Legolas plenty of reason to want to stay out of caves when he gets to Moria. You are pretty hard on him every time he goes under ground!

Author's reply

Asfaloth became involved after a casual comment from a reviewer for the original incarnation of this story on ff.net, nearly two years ago. Poor Legolas - but perhaps having done the heroic bit and rescued the twins despite his fear, he'll feel differently about caves. Or maybe not ...
