elliska · 12 April 2005 · Chapter 40: Searching

Poor Thranduil! It is inconceivable to me that Legolas never, ever got lost in the woods, so I can see this happening. But the way you portray Thranduil's fear and find Legolas sleeping curled up with an oak is what makes this so dear. Good job.

Author's reply

Even though the shadow hadn't fallen on the forest yet, there are still plenty of dangers for a lost elfling. I think it would be instinctive for Legolas to seek sanctuary with the trees, even so young.

Lianna · 12 April 2005 · Chapter 40: Searching

I'll have to show this one to my husband, who once lost track of our then-two-year-old son in a shopping mall. It only takes a second. I think all the parents who read this will identify with Thranduil.

Author's reply

I think this has happened to many of us! How can they go so far, so fast ... Poor Thranduil was having some very bad moments here.

Bodkin · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 39: Brotherly Love

I'm writing an Arwen story at the moment. (Along with about four others, which is why none of them are progressing very fast.) I've just finished a bit with her loving brothers! They are very fond of each other!

Author's reply

I look forwrd to that - I love your take on the twins!

Bodkin · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 39: Brotherly Love

'They both hugged her, smearing her with mud, and she broke into a reluctant smile.' Brothers! Who would have them? And who, having them, would be without them? I hope she wasn't wearing anything very special just at that moment. It's good to see happy Arwen - so much of her final Aragorn period is tinged with loss and the awareness of more loss to come, that it's easy to forget the two and a half thousand years (give or take a few centuries) of happiness.

Author's reply

Well, I wouldn't mind brothers like that! (I think ...) Bearing in mind that this is her begetting day, she may well have been wearing her best dress - not that that would have made any difference to the twins. I don't write much Arwen, but I do like to write about her with her brothers sometimes. I think they'd all have been very close.

Celebwen · 31 March 2005 · Chapter 39: Brotherly Love

Jay, I love your drabbles. And it is nice to see Arwen with someone other than Aragorn, lol. Splentabulous job, as usual.

Author's reply

*grin* I don't seem to be able to write anything nowadays that doesn't have the twins in it! Thanks.

Lianna · 31 March 2005 · Chapter 39: Brotherly Love

Oh, how very male of them to not realize that they were covered with mud. I can just see this happening.

Author's reply

I suspect that the twins knew perfectly well that they were covered in mud! But she's their little sister, so they hug her anyway.

elliska · 31 March 2005 · Chapter 39: Brotherly Love

This was very sweet. Poor Arwen. I imagine she would have had exactly these type of experiences with brothers like those. :)

Author's reply

Yes, poor Arwen! The twins nearly missed her begetting day - but the point is, they did get there in time - just.

Vi Janaway · 12 March 2005 · Chapter 22: A Brother's Prayer

I think that this is Elladan...I see them as two distinct personalities. I also think that Elrohir is the quieter one. But he is Elladan's anchor...so of course, Elladan would want to be the same for him.

Tigger · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 32: Mid-Winter Magic

I come and read your drabbles most of the time I'm on SoA, but there are ones I read every single time and this is one of them. You captured the magic of Mid Winter's Eve for an Elf, Christmas for the rest of us, so wonderfully. Especially the, "I'm not going to fall asleep *this* year." I'm guilty of that one myself...*grins*!! Lovely job Jay!!

Author's reply

It was a lovely Christmas drabble to write, with an Elvish twist. I imagine a very young Legolas trying to stay awake, and Thranduil sneaking around decorating the trees! Thanks for reviewing this - I'm glad you liked it!

elliska · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 38: Important Business

I love this! I love animal POV's and this was perfect! The cat's elf! Great! And all those annoying unimportant affairs disturbing the kitty's lovely sunshine. I can so see this. Wonderful!

Author's reply

Well, one thing's for sure - she's not Elrond's cat, it's definitely the other way round! And what could be more important than sleeping in the sun? I've been on the receiving end of the one-eyed glare when I disturb my cat by doing pointless, irritating things like typing when she's on my lap!

JastaElf · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 38: Important Business

Personally, I think it is in Mirkwood during the visits of the burglar and the Dwarves in "The Hobbit"... because Thranduil most decidedly seems to me to be an Elf who would love cats. :-) Dearly as I love dogs, I think them a tad over-eager; Elves would appreciate the aloof loyalty of the fabled Cat. :-) Wherever it is and whoever the kitty's Elf is, it is an adorable drabble. Thank you for sharing it!

Author's reply

Actually, it's the Council of Elrond - pretty pointless, wouldn't you agree? ;) Elrond, of course, is the cat's elf; and the cat, needless to say, is based on mine. I hadn't thought about it being Mirkwood, but that fits as well. I think Thranduil is more of a dog person, though (though not the floppy, soppy, loves-everyone creature we have, drooling lovingly on the cat!)

DAYNA · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 38: Important Business

As a cat lover, I say hear hear Jay! Kitty musta been just behind Elrond's chair. I loved this story! :D

Author's reply

Yes, I think the cat would have stayed close to her elf! I'm glad you liked this - it's a piece of silliness that was great fun to write.

Karri · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 38: Important Business

I like this one very much, Jay! Having a house full of such persnickety creatures, I can very much identify with it. :-) You captured kitty perspective perfectly!

Author's reply

I expect most cat lovers will identify with this! Cats have a different view on matters - never mind saving the world, a bit of peace and quiet and a warm spot is all they want.

Joee · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 38: Important Business

"The pointless, irritating discussions were over." Lol, I love this one. Being a cat person myself, I think it suits the personlity of a cat perfectly. Good job =)

Author's reply

All those talks about the future of the world - why can't they just let a cat sleep in peace? I certainly had my cat in mind as I wrote this - and she's on my lap now, wishing I'd stop typing!

Lianna · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 38: Important Business

It's the Council of Elrond? Somehow, I didn't think of that. I thought that this was Mirkwood, and the harsh voices were visiting dwarves. But on second thought, Thranduil doesn't seem like a cat person.

Author's reply

I hadn't thought about Mirkwood, but it was dwarves - Gimli and Gloin were at the council. Thranduil may be more of a dog person, perhaps.

daw the minstrel · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 38: Important Business

OK. I had to think about this. The Council, right? I like the POV, Jay. It's always touching to me how animals just go on with their animal lives when what we think are huge doings are going on.

Author's reply

Yes, it's the council. I deliberately didn't specify, but hadn't realised that it could be taken as Mirkwood as well. I think animals (especially cats) have different priorities to us!

Bodkin · 24 February 2005 · Chapter 38: Important Business

What an interesting perspective on the Council. And all is right as long as HER elf is in control. (Although who is in control of Elrond? I wonder - is she small and furry?) Now a DOG'S view point . . .

Author's reply

Well, it's certainly a different perspective! All the cat wanted was for everyone to shut up and go away (except for Elrond, of course ...) A dog's view? The dog would go with the Fellowship - what a lovely long walk!

paranoidangel · 22 February 2005 · Chapter 37: First Words

lol. Of course, that's going to be their first word. Whatever were Elrond and Celebrian thinking? :)

Author's reply

Like any parents, they were thinking (hoping) that their child's first word would be mummy or daddy. There was a certain amount of rivalry there between them, but they reckoned without the twins themselves!

Bodkin · 19 February 2005 · Chapter 37: First Words

What else would they say? I think Glorfindel was always onto a loser here, though. Unless he decides to conclude that El all an infant can manage of his three syllables. He might, just to tease. After all - it's more like his name than Nana or Ada. I bet Elrond and Celebrian are surrounded by people who tell them that their elfling was discussing philosophy at six months, was dry at night before they were a year and could read Quenya at two. Parents have the most incredibly elastic and inaccurate memories!

Author's reply

Quite. What else would they say? Glorfindel's clever *and* cunning, though: 'Glor-find-el': There! They said my name! I know what you mean about parents with - imaginative - recall!

Kitty · 19 February 2005 · Chapter 37: First Words

*giggles* Of course, what else should they say than 'El', considering their strong connection? Elrond and Celebrían should have expected this, even if parents of course want 'Nana' or 'Ada' for the first word! That was quite amusing!

Author's reply

I think that perhaps Elrond and Celebrían forgot their sons' strong bond - even when the twins are so young. They would have liked Nana or Ada, but it wasn't to be.

LKK · 18 February 2005 · Chapter 37: First Words

And so begins the alphabet names. :) This was cute, Jay. I laughed at Elrond and Celebrian competing to see whose name would be said first. Elven parents aren't all that different than human ones, are they? A parent is a parent is a parent. Very nice!

Author's reply

Ah, the alphabet names! I'm glad you remembered them. Ar's not around yet, but I bet the parents would be the same with her. Will it be Ada or Nana?

elliska · 18 February 2005 · Chapter 37: First Words

This was great! I can just see Elrond and Celebrian trying to get their sons to say Nana and Ada and them saying El instead. That was perfect!

Author's reply

Well, you know how I like to write the twins. Of course their first word would be 'El'!.

daw the minstrel · 18 February 2005 · Chapter 37: First Words

LOL. That's clever. I have to tell you about two colleagues of mine who just adopted a one-year-old Chinese child. She has four words of English: mama, dada, baba (bottle), and kitty-cat. Kitty-cat used to mean the cat who lives in their house, but now it means "I like that and I want it."

Author's reply

I like cats. That seems like a good translation to me! My own daughter (now 18) used to say 'wanna bee'. As far as we could tell, it meant much the same thing!

Joee · 18 February 2005 · Chapter 37: First Words

LOL, this one was cute.

Author's reply

Well, these are the twins. What do you expect their first word to be??

Bodkin · 6 February 2005 · Chapter 36: Scorched Earth

The resilience of the forest must be reassuring. And the elves will know that, now, it will be able to grow without interference. A heartening moment.

Author's reply

I don't think that even an elf would be able to replant the entire forest. Seeing it regrowing again without help must be a wonderful feeling.
