Hey! Now this was a pleasant surprise! Hehehe. Thranduil and Celebrian matchmaking. Boy are they in for a surprise in the end! And elfings will never learn to take it easy when they're hurt (I remember trying to run with a cast on my leg--not a good idea). Poor Thranduil was having kittens over that. Too funny. And Celebrian's past vocabulary lessons. Also funny. Loved that touch. And I could really feel for Legolas's frustration that he still had a good deal of healing before him. Why did you send him into the cave!? Alone!? I certainly hope you update this quickly because I will be worried about him. :)
Author's reply
When I wrote the swearing scene in 'Journeys', I knew it would come back to haunt Celebrian. This was the perfect opportunity! And I've often thought that L&A seem the perfect couple - it's just that they don't agree ;)
Don't worry too much about Legolas - and the reason he's gone alone is because he doesn't want anyone talking him out of it!

So nice to see another chapter in this story. I had resigned myself to the fact that I might not see an end to it. So this is a very pleasant surprise!
The discussion between Thranduil and Celebrian was quite amusing and so typical of all parents. I wonder what the subject elflings would say if they learned of this matchmaking.
So Legolas is still intent on finding out the mystery of the cave. I hope he doesn't find anything nasty.
Author's reply
I'm sorry about the long delay. I promised that I would finish it, and I will - and I hope the next chapter won't be so long in getting written!
At the moment, Legolas is oblivious to the fact that Arwen's a girl - she's just a friend, and E2's little sister. And he's got other things on his mind.

Oh, Jay! Why did you have to have Legolas go into those caves ALONE? Will elflings never learn? Now I'm going to worry until your next update -- which, for the sake of my mental health, had better not take as long as this one did. ;)

I certainly hope it won't be so long! Just don't worry too much. Thanks for reviewing!

*blinks* Wow. Great to see this one back again.
I really enjoyed the scene between Thranduil and Celebrían. I like the understanding between them when they talk of their sons’ futures and happiness. It makes me feel rather sorry for them that this perfect match between Arwen and Legolas will come to nothing! I really felt for Thranduil as melancholy and memory pulled at him and I just love the way Celebrían manages to pull him out of it. The story about Thranduil and Telparian was wonderful too. It’s great to get a glimpse of her and it’s a very touching insight into their relationship too.
Sarndal, eh? Sounds just as confusing as football is ;-) Celebrían seems to be a pro when it comes to dealing with her children. I had to laugh at how surprised and impressed Thranduil is by their reaction to a mere look from her.
“But I learnt that word from you!” LOL. Methinks I know one instance anyway when she uttered it. I love the way you connect your stories with details like this.
I love Calmacil. I don’t mind who you injure as long as he gets to appear ;-)
So Legolas is improving. I’m glad to see that but… he’s going to do what??! Thranduil will have a fit. Still, hopefully we’ll learn now what it was he saw! :-)
Author's reply
Sorry - it's been a horribly long time between chapters, I know.
Thranduil and Celebrian are thinking dynastically about alliances between their realms, but most of all they want the children to be happy. No forced arranged marriages here! One day, I'll write more about Thranduil and Telparian - I think she's only actually appeared in one story.
You (and Thranduil) forget that Celebrian is Galadriel's daughter. She can do intimidating when she wants to, but mostly she doesn't need to ;) - but she should have known that her sons would remember the word they learned from her.
It's odd how OCs grow on you, isn't it? I like Calmacil too!

I liked the way Legolas is slowly recovering. Thranduil's POV on it was fun to read. I also like Celebrian and Thranduil doing a little matchmaking. Boy, are they going to be disappointed! I've been wondering what Legolas saw in the cave.
Author's reply
It's a shame about Legolas and Arwen. From the parents' POV, they're perfectly matched - it's a pity L&A don't agree.
I hope it won't be too long before we see what's in the cave - not as long as last time, anyway!

I just discovered this site in the last month, and have been busily soaking up all the stories. I am *finally* getting around to posting reviews for the ones that stand out. Anyway, wanted to thank you for a wonderful presentation of a loving Thranduil - I've read too many stories where he's made out to be a demanding tyrant, and I just don't see how someone like that could raise someone as good-natured and gentle as Legolas! Well, it's been a while since you last posted to this WIP, so hopefully you've worked through your writer's block and are planning to post another installment soon? Thanks for the wonderful story!
Author's reply
Thank you! I hate stories with an evil!Thranduil - for the same reasons you mention. So I decided to write some stories where he's a good father.
I know it's been a *long* time since I updated (though I've been doing other stories, which also feature Legolas and Thranduil), but I'm actually working on the next chapter now. I hope to post within a week.
Thank you for your interest!

AI! A WIP! A WIP!
(She drops her bow and arrow.)
I didn't know, though I shouldn't have assumed.
I liked the banter between Thranduil and Legolas very much. (I mean in the beginning of this chapter, the discussion of who might be responsible for Legolas's stubborn gene.)
(Sigh.) I can but wait.
Author's reply
Thanks for reading all this and reviewing as well! It is a WIP, but I'm working on the next chapter - I hadn't realised how long it's been since I updated.
Until you mentioned it, I also hadn't realised that poor Legolas was still dirty, grimy and bloody :( We'll have to assume that he had a bath off stage, as it were. I'll also check those edits you mentioned - sometimes errors slip through.
I'm glad you've been enjoying this - and of course you can print it off! I have other stories you and she might like as well.
Thanks again - and I must stop being distracted by random plot bunnies and finish this story!

Ah! Legoals washes briefly in this one before retiring.
I have a question. Legolas is talking about ellyth with Arwen and makes reference to being liked for his position rather than for himself. He says they want (or their mothers want it for them) to be the next queen of Lasgalen. But such would presume Thranduil dies. Elves are immortal. Would anyone presume that he's going to die before all the elves have to sail? Or do you think elven kings retire? (Seriously, I would get tired of being a ruler after the first few centuries.)
Anyway, still enjoying the story, of course.

I just got back to your story. Thanks again for writing this.
I knew last night that there was something nagging me. When he got to the dining ahll, I was reminded, and besides, you yourself had Thranduil making note that Legolas's hair needed washing.
Several times you mentioned Legolas being covered with blood, and his hair being matted with blood and dust. No where do you mention him being cleaned off. I was thinking a very tender bit could be included about Thranduil doing it, or even Arwen or one (or both) of the twins. Maybe Elrond and Arwen? I don't know, but it kept nagging at me that it sounded as if his hair was still filthy. I fell over a precipice playing a stupid game with my brother as a 12-year-old, and cut two arteries in my head. My new raincoat (absoutely covered with a sheet of blood) had to be thrown away. The doctor forbad me to wash my hair -- I had internal stitches as well as outside ones. I remember freaking out my cousin at the science table cays later by scrubbing my fingers over my scalp and letting flakes of dried blood cover the table. The science teacher scolded me.
Anyway, it was unbelievably gross and itchy to boot. The area around my cut could have been cleaned. Once they knew Legolas was going to live, a little blotting would be okay, yes? And wouldn't he have washed before making his entrance at the dining hall??
Just thinking ....

· Chapter 9: Conversations And Understanding
Hello Jay of Lasgalen,
I've been meaning to read your story for a long time, and finally got this far today while I should have been doing many other rather critical things before I go back to work. I just wanted to take a moment to tell you I'm enjoying it. I only meant to read a chapter, but it was too addicting.
If you can bear with my copyediting thing, I'll just mention that near the beginning, you wrote "...snow covered [hill or soemthing]." I would recommend hyphenating the compound modifier ("snow-covered"). Ditto for "light-hearted banter." In this 8th chapter, near the end. Legolas is speaking with Elrohir and you end the sentence with an ellipsis (three dots), end quote, and then have "he stopped." I'd recommend making the ellipsis into four dots and then cap the "H" -- "He stopped."
May I print this off for my daughter? She'll love it. (My 12-year-old, very precocious, and a good writer herself.) I'll see if I can finish it tomorrow. Thank you so much for writing it!

His gaze strayed again to Arwen and Legolas, now walking slowly beside the river. “Although they are not so young now – they are growing fast, all of them.”
Hmmmmm.... could the King be entertaining ideas concerning his son and the daughter of a certai half-elf? ;)
Good for the trees for defending themselves against Elladan's scorn! Very funny.
I still wonder if Legolas is going to try and find out if there is something done in the caves. He seems so unwilling to accept what others tell him. He's as stubborn as his mother. Just like Thranduil says. *snort*
Author's reply
With Aragorn thousands of years in the future, can you think of a more suited couple? They are both the children of rulers, of similar age and status. And they are good friends. Can you blame Thranduil for thinking matchmaking thoughts?

I did my best to drink in your lovely descriptions of the winter forest, but my little daughter was behind me the entire time, singing the Star Spangled Banner at the top of her voice and doing cartwheels around the room. It was a bit distracting, but if I must return to this chapter for a re-read later it will be a pleasure. Your words were just lovely.
I like the pacing of this story. You are taking your time, thank God. I dislike a rushed tale. Obviously we will be getting back to the cave and perhaps a bit of juicy action at some point, but there is always more to a story than just that, when it is well written and well planned. Praise be for mature writers like you!

Thank you for your praise! I'm glad you like the forest scene, but children (and partners) can be so distracting at times. Thanks for the comment about the pacing - I worried that this chapter may be a little slow, but feel Legolas would not recover very swiftly after something like this.

ALL RIGHT!!! An update! And a good one, too! I absolutely love the relationship that Legolas has with the forest, especially the trees! (gush, gush!lol) I would imagine he was getting pretty claustrophobic from all that time spent inside those stone walls...I know how I am when the weather's been bad for a week or more (snow? what's that?...ah, but rain...that I do know!) Your scenes of him in the tree - of the tree "cradling" him - of the different voices of the trees (the sharp, green voice of the pine, the light, silvery voice of the beech, the deeper, more ponderous voice of the old oak) were just great! But I especially loved the part where the tree obligingly, but gently dumped the snow on Elladan's head (or was it 'Ro? They both deserve it! *g*) Just a very entertaining chapter...Thranduil's such a good Adar, and I had to grin at the adults eyeing Legolas and Arwen walking and talking together...speculation must have been born in that moment! *vbg* A wonderful addition to this story, Jay!
linda
Author's reply
Thanks, Linda! Although Legolas is used to living inside a cave, he's also used to being able to go outside whenever he wants. He missed the trees.
It was Elladan who got snowed on, which will teach him to make comments about 'just trees' when Legolas has been having such a long chat with them. Elrohir wasn't a lot of help to his twin, was he?
And Legolas and Arwen - I sense match-making in the air!

Delightful chapter, Jay! I loved Legolas and the trees (but then I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.) The pine dumping snow on Elladan was both fitting and entertaining. ;-) And Legolas and Arwen make a lovely couple. Its unfortunate they didn't end up a couple, as I would have prefered Aragorn had ended up with Eowyn, though I love Faramir and so cannot begrudge him his happiness.
Author's reply
Poor Elladan - he'll have to learn not to mock a wood-elf in his own forest. The trees were feeling very protective of Legolas after he had spent so much time with them!
Legolas and Arwen do make a good couple - and their parents have noticed that!

All of the dialogue in here is very cute but my favorite must be:
Legolas grinned. “There are some who believe that I inherited that particular characteristic from someone a little closer,” he suggested.
His father looked indignant for a moment, but then nodded slowly. “They could be right,” he admitted ruefully. He paused, just for a second, then added, “Your mother could be very determined at times.”
As he rose from the bed and groped for his crutches, Legolas chuckled. “Oh, I know!”
Thranduil is just too much.
Author's reply
I like Thranduil! I hate to see him as an abusive father. For Legolas to be the elf we know and love, he must have had very loving parents (or parent, in this case.)

Your description of snow falling left me wishing for it, Jay, and I usually don't because it comes early and lasts long where I live. But it does muffle noise so that there's quiet, and it is beautiful, especially in a woods.
Thranduil is a very understanding father here, and Legolas behaves maturely, I think, not getting defensive or anything.
Author's reply
It seems strange to write a winter scene when there's bright sunshine outside, but when I started 'Mid Winter Gifts', which is set immediately before this story, it was winter! It's also wishful thinking, as the most we get where I live is a few flurries.
Thranduil brought Legolas up more or less on his own since he was ten, so they understand each other very well.

Ahh. Lovely. I'm so glad that Legolas is getting better - the day in the woods really did him good. The relationship between him and his father is a very mature one - they can both understand each other and let each other be, which is great.
Love the 'Wood elf' 'Noldor snob' exchange - and the snow dropping on Elladan's head. Have E2 developed any affinity with trees? As Celeborn's grandsons, they could have a reasonable rapport - I would think Elrohir would more that Elladan.
Legolas and Arwen seem quite close. In a way it's a shame they didn't get together. (Don't tell anyone, but some of the Tolkien stuff does make you wonder whether he thought it through.)
Author's reply
Legolas and Thranduil have only got each other, no-one else, so I think it makes Legolas seem a little more mature than the twins at times. I know E2 have a little wood-elf heritage, but Celeborn was more Sindarin than Silvan. Besides, I think they take after their father more.
Legolas and Arwen? They seem ideal together, but sadly they don't agree!

So Legolas prefers brunettes who are interested in him not his heritage and adar wants him to bond with someone from Lorien or Imladris, eh? And then he sits there and tells it all this to the perfect candidate, but he doesn't have a clue about the implications of what he's saying. Boys can be so dense at times. LOL
I know Legolas thinks of Arwen more as a sister, but the situation did stike me as funny!

It is difficult to be on the periphery, watching others but being unable to participate. But at least Legolas is out of bed! My cat is currently sporting a cast on his right hind leg, broken when my husband, ummm, dropped a suitcase on him as they collided in a doorway. Whoops. But I am amazed at how quickly Milo has adapted, and he actually sprints through the house once again, and jumps onto the bed. But he also still loses his balance on occasion and wipes out, or his leg gets hung up on something, poor guy. I expect it will be much the same for Legolas, who had better not go back down into the depths looking for whatever-it-was until he is fit. Ah, but what are the chances of that?
Author's reply
Oh, your poor cat! Is he the basis for Tithlam? Legolas is getting better with the cast and crutches, but uneven ground (as in the caves!) could be a problem. He'll have to wait. He's a sensible elf, and doesn't want to break his leg again.

I'm glad you're still following this story - I want to show Legolas recovering slowly rather than leaping out of bed the next day, but feel it makes the story too slow-moving at times.
I think that music would be an integral part of any elfling's education, along with archery and politics for Legolas - if he was to become King he'd need all that.

A great chapter, per usual! I love the image of Legolas' dream, with Arwen and the twins rebuilding Laketown. And it seems to me that Elrohir is something like the Casanova of the Elvish world. :) Thanks for the great chapter!

I think Elves usually have more control over their dreams, but Legolas is still not 100%, so it's a little strange.
I'm not sure about Casanova, I always feel there's something rather unsavoury about him - but Elrohir just can't help it. He gets on with *everyone*!
