Ok, Holidays over. Where is the next chapter? You’re killing me… I'm having major withdrawals and anxiety attaches. It's starting to effect my work :oP

Author's reply

LOL. I'm trying, I'm trying. I *have* finals you know!! ;) Plus I just wrote a great song for Eowyn...see? I'm working on it! Unfortunately you won't get either new song for a while. Hee. LOL, that made me snicker out loud and it sounded all evil like a cheesy cartoon villian. I gotta say, Eomer's one tough cookie. This male-bonding is going rough. Faramir might have to shout once or twice. I had some damn fine Eowyn/Arwen but I forgot it. Sigh, must concentrate and remember. Author Reply: Heh, I'll add that I have some exceptionally steamy Eowyn/Faramir intereaction for when they finally meet up again. Yeow. I might have to put up a warning. ;)

All I have to say is... When's the next chapter coming? I'm going through withdrawals.

Author's reply

Soon as I can get it written. I took a holiday. ;) It's Thanksgiving! I had to eat! You can have your puesdo-slash Eomer/Faramir Not!date and playing with paint later. ROFL. God, now I've got the giggles.

Just wanted to respond to Raksha's comment that Faramir was justified with his actions with Eomer and Oswyn. I agree that Faramir is justified with his anger and frustration. However, although I can see Faramir responding to Oswyn in the way that he did since he had to make a point in a rather public arena and in front of soldiers, I do not believe that he would do the same thing with Eomer. Tolkien portrays Faramir as someone embodying the best of the later age of men. I don't believe someone like that would need to make a point by humiliating others. He's also had to deal with a very stressful relationship with his father all his life and always served his father with dignity. A few months of Eomer's stubborness would probably not faze someone who has learned to develop a thick skin after what he's gone through. In fact, I would think he would find it slightly juvenile and amateurish. Plus, humiliating Eomer would be just like what his father used to do to him. That's why I wondered if it was a learned action. Otherwise, why would he inflict on others what he has found to be unpleasant? He's also older and probably had to deal with young brash men who speak before thinking. I'm sure he's encountered someone similar to Eomer and would know how to deal with that type of personality. Lastly, I always thought that leaders that their followers love, as Faramir was loved by his men and by the people of Gondor, would not need to explode a fuse to be heard. In fact I thought the story was making a point that Faramir's quiet dignity and control was what got under Eomer's skin. To have him act the way Eomer probably would have acted just goes against the dichotomy that the characters have.

Author's reply

Hmm. Just in case there are others like me--dichotomy: Division into two; especially, the division of a class into two subclasses opposed to each other by contradiction. :) I *heart* dictionary.com and thesaurus.com. Ah, college education...how little thy are worth to me in comparison. Well, Eomer and Faramir were semi-private. Some soldiers watched, some did not and it was viewed as a private conversation as they were the only two at the fire. I know it wasn't private as holding it in Eomer's tent but I don't think Faramir would have moved. I think anything Faramir did would get under Eomer's skin. While I'll side more with Raksha here, you have interesting comments on the characters I've tried to build. Faramir's changing--he's in a more rustic, more forceful society and I think its rubbing off a bit. If it gives you any comfort he's not yelling in the next chapter. :) Lots of interaction, lots of awkwardness and lots of Eomer initiated conversation. Which is the first step. Also, cute Eomer/Faramir/students. See, I gotta give the boys something besides Eowyn to have in common. It's hard and this chapter is going slower. I'm trying to get them as equal as possible, yet there's going to be some double-standard issues because, obviously, Faramir is a nobleman and yet he's playing a common soldier in this. How is he going to be viewed? I don't think Eomer is going to be ordering him around anytime soon. I dont' think Faramir was like this in Gondor. This is a pushed beyond his limits way of acting. Eomer essentially held out everything Faramir could have wanted from him--acceptance, friendship, etc. and then took it back. Maybe Denthor did the same. I don't know yet, we'll see how this goes.

I know that if you wrote a book featuring Gaer having wacky medieval adventures, I would likely buy it(I was reading the other reviews). I can also bet that it would be a best seller. If the Tolkien foundation ever cracks and lets us publish our fanfics, I suggest you publish this one; you would make a fortune. But seriously, write a fic about Gaer if you ever feel like it. He is one of those characters whom you just don't want to lose. As always, I'm looking forward to the next update! ~Elen

Author's reply

I'm thinking we might have a Gaer fic someday. LOL, I have to finish this monster first. ;) Hmm. Fortune, eh? I doubt it but that would be verry nice.

Drake · 20 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

Raksha, I don't really want to argue much, but I have to say at least a couple of things. First, while Faramir was not the firstborn son, he was still groomed for the position of Steward (If not by Denethor than likely by Gandalf). Eomer was not. He was never accounted as an heir. He didn't want to be. All he wanted to do was be free to roam the green fields of the Riddermark as Third Marshal. He may be a king in title, but he's still a soldier at heart. His mindset isn't going to go from warrior to king in a mere half year, especially considering how strong-willed a man he is. Also, Eomer pretty much lost everyone he loved in the blink of an eye. First his parents, than his cousin, his uncle, and he thought his sister as well. True, Faramir lost his brother and father as well, but let's consider something for a moment. Eomer isn't taking (I hate to use that word) anything precious away from Faramir. Faramir is. He's seen as taking away Eomer last living family member. If one was to lose most everyone he loved so quickly, could he not be allowed some overbearing protectiveness of his his sister? Would it be unreasonable to assume he would see Faramir taking her away as a hostile act? I'm not saying what Eomer is doing is right. It's not, but please consider what he's been through too. Like Faramir, he has a great deal of adjusting to do. He's not taking it as well, of course, but consider my first paragraph for that, and the fact that he is younger than Faramir. I'm not asking that you change your mind, but please give him a little credit and more time for him to adjust to how rapidly and devestatingly frighteningly his life is changing.

Raksha The Demon · 19 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

I decided to open my big mouth again. I've noticed that some readers are sorry for Eomer because Faramir blew up at him; and one person thought that wrong that Faramir was resorting to humiliation with both Oswyn and Eomer. With all due respect to the other readers, who are certainly entitled to their opinion; I'm not at all sorry for Eomer in this chapter. Eomer and Faramir lost their brothers and their liege-lords/father-figures on the same day; and thus became first the heir, and then the ruler, of two major human kingdoms, at the same time. True, Faramir quickly yielded the rule of Gondor to Aragorn; but that doesn't mean he didn't have major responsibilities as a Steward to a war-torn land and damaged City. Like Eomer, Faramir had very little time to get used to the idea that he was going to inherit the job that should have been that of the now-dead heir. But while Eomer is learning to be a King, Faramir is stuck in Rohan because Eomer couldn't figure out how to otherwise delay Eowyn's marriage to him. Eomer should have at the very least thanked Faramir for probably saving his sister's sanity; and been happy that she was going to make an excellent marriage to a prince who adored her rather than spending her life playing second fiddle to Eomer's future Queen. I don't blame Eomer for being nervous and sad at the prospect of his little sister leaving home; but he could have asked Faramir for three or six months of Eowyn's time so she could help him reorganize Meduseld in preparation for her leavetaking. Instead, Eomer assaulted Faramir, and insisted he come and be an outcast in Rohan for several weeks and jump through hoops fulfilling Eomer's conditions. And did Faramir, who is a proud man and the heir of a very proud house, make a fuss about Eomer's demands? He tried to be polite and friendly to Eomer. Eomer was consistently cold and unwelcoming to him; at a time when Faramir was already suffering the loss of his brother and then learned that Denethor had tried to kill him while killing himself. And then, when Faramir is obediently fulfilling his part of the bargain, separating himself from the woman he loves and the kingdom he's supposed to be caretaking in the King's absence by teaching a bunch of teenagers, a task some might think was beneath the rank of a Captain of Rangers and Steward of Gondor, Eomer shows up, offers genuine friendship and, as Faramir is starting to relax and think that Eomer has truly put aside his rancor, Eomer brings up his childish resentment of Faramir taking baby sister away... Frankly, Faramir would have to be a saint not to have become savagely angry. It's to his credit that he didn't punch Eomer in the nose. Eomer has nursed his own pride; but doesn't seem to care that Faramir also has pride, and has gone out of his way to put aside a lot of it to satisfy Eomer and make Eowyn happy. I think Eomer deserved the humiliation - Faramir had tried to be pleasant, to be kind, to be honest, and been, verbally and emotionally kicked in the teeth by the bratty young Horse-lord (who was not acting like the King he is). Faramir is not a servant or a slave, he's the Steward of Gondor, and entitled to respect and consideration. I think humiliation was also the only thing that could have gotten through Eomer's rather muddied thoughts to force a genuine attempt at reconciliation. As for Oswyn, he had it coming even worse - Faramir tried to avoid the fight, and Oswyn became nasty and insulted Finduilas, Lady of Gondor. That sort of rudeness deserves some humiliation in the punishment, in my opinion. Hope I'm not ranting too much. Eomer and Faramir were both brilliantly written in this chapter; and I really look forward to the development of their friendship.

Author's reply

WOW! Break that down again! 25 words or less! Go! ROFL. All I can say is Eomer redeems himself like crazy before the end. Said friendship is developing. I promise. :)

lmw · 19 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

I feel so bad for Faramir, trying to figure out, still, just what it is that Eomer wants. But I still love Eomer. He is just so out of his depth for so much of his current life. I love the way you write these two.

Author's reply

Thanks. I feel sorry for both, too. Eh, Eomer was asking for it...he completely hijacked Faramir's fic. What did he expect? To escape unscathed? Not! :) Seriously, lol, this WAS Faramir's story, once apon a time.

Drake · 19 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

"He was talking about food. Pervs. ;)" LOL! Where on earth did that come from? I reread parts, but it's usually the funny stuff. One of my favorite Gaer moments is when Faramir is telling him about what he thinks about while on the battlefield, and Gaer pauses and says, "You like lads, don't you?" Had me falling out of my seat with laughter. :)

Drake · 19 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

Yay! Review time. :) At least I hope I can finish one. Have to take my father to the doctor in 20 minutes. GO GAER! Can I ever say how much I love this guy? I don't think he's a crappy Rider of Rohan, though..... I think of him more as the quintessential Rohir. He may not be good with a bow (OMG, I just caught I wrote boy. That would've been a bad typo), but he can ride and he may be good with a sword and spear. And, I don't understand why he couldn't stay in Edoras and look after Eomer fi he wanted to. I'm sure Riders get paid *somehow*, but even if it wasn't enough, he could always try to become a member of Eomer's personal guard. Then everything would be covered, I'm sure. But, he's going to Gondor and I'm happy about that. :) Hey, maybe *he* can meet a nice Gondorian woman who's taller than he is. Somehow, I think Gaer would get a kick out of that, lol. Good thing Faramir did find his balls in that pond (ROFL!), and that he was man enough to tell Eomer he's sick and tired of going through ludicrous extremes and fighting all the time. But, I also feel sorry for Eomer for having to endure that thrashing. It seems, though, that everything will soon be coming into order. Eomer's really a good guy. He may be overprotective and selfishly clinging to his sister, but I can't fault him since he's lost all the rest of his family before even reaching thirty. Faramir should see that, too. Anyway, can't wait to see them becoming the best of friends. I'm sure that will bring along with it some really funny moments. :) Looking forward to more updates! P.S. Snuggles! I feel so special now. :)

Author's reply

LOL, I'm beginning to think of writing a spin-off story with Gaer as the main character as everyone loves him so much. Hmm, he's my first original character. Maybe he can be in a book... You guys would buy that, wouldn't you? A medieval-type story about Gaer? I promise he'd be funny and have wacky adventures! ;) Anyway, he's not the best warrior, I'll just say that and while none of the Riders are perfect, Gaer REALLY can't shoot. There will be a demonstration later...among other things Gaer can't do, like jump 3 feet down a bank. LOL, I can't wait to write that. "Hey, Faramir..." Splat! Eh, Gaer wouldn't be a very good guard. He's too informal, he'd be chattin' Eomer up all the time, offering him bites of his food. LOL, that's not respectful, though Eomer would probably enjoy having him as a friend. And he will later, cause I haven't brought Gaer this far just for Eomer to muscle him out. Best of friends is soon to come...but not too soon. You all know me. I develop slow, but as I was assured yesterday by a friend, the best things take time. He was talking about food. Pervs. ;) Yeah, that's right...800 hit count on the chapter with the dry sex. WAAAY above the average. Author Reply: OH, that Gaer. I just reread something, he said about Faramir. "He's left his sense of humor in Mundburg...now we're going to have to muster and get it." It had me in stitches. I'm pathetic, lol.

Adamas · 18 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

[Arwen has brains...what, was the scene where she said she wanted to be Eowyn because Eowyn wouldn't have to watch Faramir die shallow?] You’re right about Arwen … what’s that old saying “still waters run deep”. The age comment was perceptive of her, and she is probably in a bit of denial about her Father leaving. The puppy is a good enough distraction. I just wanted to use my mall-crawler joke. [Poor Eomer. Faramir had to go to the harshest, most extreme lengths ever to get through to him.] I love Eomer… he can be as thick as a brick, but that’s his charm. I think behind all of his big tough guy image is a very big hearted, lovable guy. And I know that Faramir and Eomer are going to be buds. MacGyver/Faramir…Lol that is totally right on! And, yes you are a miniseries, so you better not cancel yourself or I’ll have to write the sponsor and protest. I can’t say when the last time I enjoyed reading fanfiction as must as I enjoy reading your story. The added bonus is the reviews … its like your very own discussion group. By the way what Fan81981 said is a big DITTO!! I could not have said it better. I think about whether you have updated all day at work and I am overjoyed when I find you have. During the long waits I go back and re-read chapters. Now get back to typing and update us with all those hints I just read about Faramir & Eowyn. ;) Please.

Author's reply

Oh, they're going to be buds all right...(hint alert!) Hee, I've got some very very heartwarming scenes planned. :) Remember Eomer's comment, "...and hugs." Ha! Poor guy. You guys know what? I reread chapters too...but the pathetic thing is I love them and at the end can't wait to go on...WHILE I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE NEXT AND BEYOND. lol. I'm a loser. I work for 2 hours today, I'll start the next chapt. then. :) Gotta go on with the Eomer/Faramir saga. Author Reply: Also the rereading many of you people have confessed to explains the oddly high hit counts on the chapters with Faramir/Eowyn goodness. You pervs. ;)

Jen · 18 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

Just like one of the previous reviewers, I want to thank you for sharing your talents with us. This is really a wonderful story and I look forward to each update. I want to commend you on the last few chapter and for the skill by which you have transitioned the story from the relationships of the main characters to one another how they stand when they are all apart. The scene in the forest between Faramir and his students was great. I really admire the detail that you provide and the bit about the bird was sweet. These students are really lucky to be learning from someone who has skills not normally found in the Riddermark. I wonder if Eomer plans to have these students teach others so the skills would not be lost. Really like Gaer too and the suggestion that maybe he can go to Ithilien to learn to be a ranger. Maybe he can also teach the Ithilien Rangers a thing or two about being a Rider of Rohan. The story about Eowyn and Arwen is cute. Goes to show how sometimes one never knows the path that your life takes. How could Rusco have known that he would end up living the life of luxury. I will, however, disagree with the other reviewers about the scene with Eomer. Although it was good that Faramir finally voiced his unhappiness, I thought he would have done it differently. I was just disturbed by the portrayal that Faramir makes a point and shows his strength by humiliating others -- first the soldier in Meduseld and now Eomer. I thought that with his patience and control, that he would do it differently. After all, he showed infinite patience with Frodo in Ithilien even though he was under tremendous pressure from his father and Mordor. Unless you think that this is a learned action from his father who probably did the same thing to him. Also been looking for scene for Faramir to show his skills as a leader. There has been a lot of scenes with his background as a Ranger, but not as someone who was eventually the Captain-General of Gondor. Maybe it would be during that hinted scene of Faramir saving Eomer? But I really like this story and can't wait to see if Eowyn would be setting a new hairstyle trend in Meduseld or being the pin up girl for the slogan, "do not let the queen get near your hair."

Author's reply

I liked the birds and all the student scenes. Eomer doesn't have plans, lol, he lives off the seat of his pants, probably something he learned as a Marshal and trying to second guess all his info from Grima. That's interesting and something I caught too--the humiliation factor with Faramir's two "victories". (I say that like I didn't write it, lol) Now, I believe with Oswyn it was justified. Faramir gave this man no reason (that I've given you yet) to insult and attack him, so this was a fairly reasonable punishment. And I think it's reasonable that Gaer fears coming reprisal that has more man-power behind Oswyn this time since it was humiliation. And, if you're patient, I will show more of Faramir's compassionate side. But, I have shown, I think, that Faramir didn't really enjoy this fight. It was more of a dirty chore. Éomer is different. He pushed and pushed Faramir essentially to the breaking point. I mean, he told him everything Faramir wanted to hear and since Faramir can read his emotions he knew none of it was lies but then Eomer went right back and ruined it all with his remark. So? Faramir snaps a little and lashes out. But then he immediately gives in--perhaps he sensed he'd gone too far? We don't know yet because we ended on Eomer's POV. Faramir might have some things to think about in his POV in the next chapter. All in all, I can say he doesn't enjoy it in a sadistic fashion. Sure, its a brief sense of satisfaction he's getting such a reaction but he didn't prolong the torture any more than he had to. If my Faramir were truly cruel he would have. Personally, I thought it was on the too strong side--Eomer came damn close to crying and yes, that wasn't the best side of Faramir at all. I agree that he could have done it differently. But he did not, so that's what we got. And the learned explantion could fit--I wrote up earlier in the chapter that Denethor disliked cheek and I've made in my story that Denethor was an asshole to Faramir. (later there will be more and different memories since Denethor isn't so 2D as he appears) ***Faramir/Eowyn bath time scene, wink, wink*** lol, a shout-out to 'Better Than Sex', you could say, though it won't be the same plot. Unfortunately. Basically, it would have taken a lot to break through to Eomer and make up his mind altogether. This is how it happened and there won't be any more in case you're wondering I'm going to make Faramir bully him around and hold it over his head. Faramir has only been leading these boys. He's not in the position of leader in the company, so, naturally, why would he assume the role of leader? But, he's now with Eomer and Eomer is a younger man so perhaps Faramir will take the role of gentle, friendly guidance here. Also, Faramir has interaction with Gaer outside the company, he's definitely the leader in that! :D LOL, Eowyn's hair. We'll see if she likes it.

Drake · 18 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

Man, I'd love to leave a long review, but I have to take the car to the shop now. :( Maybe later today or tommorow. Anyway, just as a quick note, Eomer was 27 and Eowyn 23 during the events in TTT and RotK, which didn't go far into the year 3019. So, since it's close to the end of the year, they'd likely be 28 and 24, and Faramir would be 36 if his birthday came around. I think. Also, Faramir is the same age as Sam. And Merry is older. Most people don't know that. :) And, if there's snuggling go on, can I get snuggled too? I'm no Karl Urban, but I'm not *that* bad looking a guy. :/ Great Chapter! Will review more later!

Author's reply

Further proof I cannot do mathematics. ;) Take note, readers, and have sympathy if I screw up again. aw, throwing a snuggle your way, since you asked.

“Never jump out of the bushes like that at me again, would you kindly? I thought my heart would stop and the next thing I would see was the candlelit halls of my forefathers and my sire scolding me for suffering such a disgraceful death.” ROTFLMAO!!!!! Brilliant chapter, and well worth the wait (even though I hate waiting...). I LOVED the confrontation with Eomer. It was about time that Faramir revealed he saw through all this crap. He really is much older than Eomer, and has gone through a lot more and survived a lot more. At the same time, I'm glad that Eomer let go of his irrational behaviour. Sisters grow up. They find love, get married, move away. Why should Eomer's life be any different than any other big brothers? He's a rather selfish being, but young, so young. Eomer of the Mark is what, 26 tops? At the then end there, I just wanted to snuggle poor Eomer! Time to grow up, laddie. You're a King. Act like it. So, brilliant job. Don't make us suffer too long waiting for the next bit. Cheers, Chibi-Kaz

Author's reply

LOL, I love Gaer. He's wonderful comedic relief. I seriously can't wait for the clash of Faramir's Not!Boyfriends--Gaer vs. Beregond in Minas Tirith. Hee!! The City, she will never be the same. Oh, yes, Faramir's showing his maturity here. He does have 7 years on Eomer and 12 on Eowyn, so he's really got more experience. Actually Eomer is 29 since he's got five on his sister and she's 24. Eh, I've met more assholish people that were way older and never changed. Eomer can and will change. Aww, I wanted to snuggle Eomer, too. Of course its not because I picture Karl Urban and Karl's a total hunk of a man...lol. ;) I'll try not to make you wait too long. These cutesy parts where Eomer and Faramir bond are just itching to get written but they'll take lots of going over to make them right.

Elendiari22 · 18 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

Hurrah! I'm so gad you updated. I almost danced when Faramir challenged Eomer at the end. They needed to have that little spat. I'm glad they've decided to end their strife. Faramir and his students are awesome. I love what you write with them. I'm looking forward to the next chapter!

Author's reply

Oh, the "You're OLD, Laerow" bit? That was too cute!! Faramir and his students are the best and wait until you see how much they love him! :) It'll be a bit surprising and make Faramir really show off his skills as a teacher and try to instill some good Gondorian values in these heathen kids. :D I can't wait to write more.

fan81981 · 18 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

This chapter finally got me to review. Most of the time I am too busy reading, and re-reading the chapters to have time (especially since I am doing this from work. Lucky that my boss has taken a day off). By far, this is one of the most impressively detailed and well-thought stories I have read. I am sure you have published if it were not for inconvenient legality of copyrights. I am sure Tolkien would not mind. Sixty-five chapters and I still find that the thought of you ending this fic saddens me. Though I am dying to find out what happens in the end, and how you resolve the tension, I don’t want the fic to end. I regularly check the site to find out if you have updated. I wanted to thank you for the time and the effort you have made on the story. It is much appreciated and makes my work day. The sensual scenes between Eowyn and Faramir especially leave the silliest grin on my face all day. They are most tastefully done and fit into the general character progression. Though I honestly would not mind a little more ‘action’, I am in awe at the restraint and innovation you show when writing the love scenes – for love scenes they are. I have re-read them often enough to note the lack of clichés in them. I wonder if you have to re-write them for they progress so naturally that I cannot be certain if you wrote them all in one go. I love your portrayal of Faramir, though I often want to knock his head and wish him to be more aggressive. I was so pleased when he finally cut Eomer down. I know that as a brother, Eomer has a reason for behaving the way he does but I am so completely in love with you Faramir that I don’t care. Though I must say, you interpretation of Aragorn is a little difficult to accept. He is most clueless, especially when it comes to his wife. This is probably because we see the couple from Eowyn/Faramir/Eomer (i.e. humans) point of view. They, especially Arwen, must seem incomprehensible. I actually like the fact that Arwen is spoiling the dog – that streak of childish pique is great, makes her all the more real – though from Eowyn’s point of view, a little silly. One of the best things about the fic, in my opinion, is that you don’t try to reason away the enigma that new relationships present. As a new author, I know I am guilty of providing reasons for my characters so that the readers will not condemn them. It is hard not to be didactic and just explain, as an omnipotent narrator, the “whys” and the “why nots”. It is impressive that you avoid that. How easy would it be for you to state what the characters are thinking in an authorial aside. But instead you take the difficult way and slowly show us. For me, that keeps me coming back and inspires me to be more careful when I write. Thank you (and apologies for the essay). Fan81981

Author's reply

No apologies, necessary, I'm wearing the silly grin now. Thanks for all your praise--it just makes me want to write more and try harder to make it all the better when I do post. :D Actually I write most of the story in one go, as much as I'm inspired for the time I can sit down and then when I'm not paticularly inspired I go over and over and OVER what I've done to make sure it's like I want it. Can I let youg guys in on a little secret here? This story writes itself. Seriously, I sit and let it go and play just like a little movie. Nothing to it. Oh, I might have to struggle for word choice here or there but the majority? Easy as pie. I know, it makes me sick, too. :) The sensual scenes are really not that hard for me since, like I said the story writes itself but I'm so glad everyone seems to find them good. I'd like more action, too, and we'll get it because hey, there's been no nookie for a fortnight by the time Faramir and Eowyn meet up again, wink, wink. :D And I've got something planned... Damn, I wish I could just sit all day at a computer and do this! Aragorn..ah, sometimes I think of getting inside his and Arwen's head and you know, giving some explanation...and then I realize I have WAY too much to do with the whole Eomer/Eowyn/Faramir triangle. Sorry. But I think what you're saying with us seeing the Aragorn/Arwen relationship from the outside is correct. Most of it isn't shown in the action of the story, which I regret but have you SEEN the size of these chapters?! LoL, maybe when I edit this monster I'll add what I can. Hmm, now I've written an essay.

Adamas · 17 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

I just have one thing to say - GO FARAMIR! GO FARAMIR! GO FARAMIR!! Superb chapter, really it was excellent, from start to finish. Your transition from one scene to the next building the action to the climatic end was masterful. Excellent job! I loved the Eowyn, Arwen, and the puppy-shopping spree. I laugh out loud at the servant carrying the dog on pillow. I have to say as funny as it was - it was a little absurd. I hope that your Arwen has more brains then a shallow, bubble gum chewing, mall-crawler in America. It was funny really; I just think that being almost three thousand years old she should have more depth of character. I think Crimson has said it before; your Arwen is nothing like Tolkien, but I don't mind much, because I'm enjoy the story. Eomer and Faramir; I love these two guys. I love that Faramir finally called Eomer's bluff. I love that after having Eomer right where he wanted him he was gracious enough and man enough to forgive him and still offer him friendship. You are a Word Master. The dialog between them was perfect. I actually could see and hear it played out in my head, this is always a sign that the writer is skilled. Another sign is if you can capture the reader's attention and keep it in the moment, not looking ahead to the end or wandering off the page. You accomplished both in this chapter. Once again the ranger stuff was awesome. Where are you coming up with this material the survival handbook, or worst case scenarios? Ranger Gael… way to go on that idea. Anyway, you're good. I was completely overjoyed and amazed you had another chapter so soon. As always thank you for sharing your talent. I look forward to your next chapter. Wondering what will Eowyn's hair look like… Will the White Lady of Rohan be going to Gondor Bald? ... Will Faramir find out who is out to get him? ... What is going to happen at the upcoming harvest festival? ... Will Faramir and Eowyn have a roll in the hay? Stay tuned!

Author's reply

Lol, GO FARAMIR. Poor Eomer. Faramir had to go to the harshest, most extreme lengths ever to get through to him. Arwen has brains...what, was the scene where she said she wanted to be Eowyn because Eowyn wouldn't have to watch Faramir die shallow? I didn't think so but it was probably overshadowed by the amusing puppy fiasco. Oh well. We'll see some supportive, intelligent, etc Arwen later. Oh, all the Ranger stuff is real. I've looked it all up on Google, actually, and referenced to make sure something is actually used, not just on one site alone. I've got games from some British boys club for later to substitute as Ranger Games, I've looked up herbs and their uses in medieval times--mainly Anglo-Saxon since Rohan culture is loosely modeled on thiers--and I've got lots and lots of stuff I haven't even touched on yet. Weapons, etc, I looked it all up so Faramir is a Tolkien MacGyver. LOL, that kills me everytime. Faramir: "Give me a stick, a handful of berries and a piece of your hair!" Ranger: "What?" Faramir: "Trust me, I've defeated orcs with less!" :D LOL! I can't wait for Ranger Gaer. This guy...if you think about it he's a really crappy Rider of Rohan. He can't shoot a bow, he's...ahem...skipping work to run around with Faramir so he's a slacker and he's a crappy brawler, too, as I'll show later. Hee! It's awesome, totally awesome when Oswyn, the man out to "get" Faramir actually comes to get him. Oh, man, the time with Gaer makes me giggle. Aw, you always compliment my character interaction. That makes me happy because I do go over it and makes me feel I don't deserve it because this comes so easily. Oh, and stay tuned! LOL, it's a miniseries now.

Lady of The Wood · 17 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

Yah!! Way to go Faramir!!! Oh I'm so pleased you got that bit done. Now they boys can start bonding. Wouldn't it shock Eowyn to all ends to see her husband to be and her brother the best buds?! I liked how you had Eowyn singing that harvest song. Is that a hint perhaps for a future event? I keep hoping. Look after your fingers! LOTW

Author's reply

Hmm, imagine: Eomer and Faramir as friends. Real buddies. Poor, poor Eowyn. They'll gang up on her and tease her until she uses her scolding voice on Faramir. LOL, that'll make him behave or no nookie. ;) And then, Eomer can make fun of him for being whipped. Ah, it's going to be good times. :D Oh, I've got the harvest song...took 2 hours to simultaneously compose and translate and I'll dare say it was worth it. Very good. I can't pamper my fingers yet...I've got to finish a 4 page book review. Sigh.

Raksha The Demon · 17 November 2004 · Chapter 64: Beginning of the End

FINALLY! Faramir unleashes his inner dragon and verbally cuts a waffling Eomer to shreds. It's about time. And finally, I think, both men can relax and learn to appreciate each other. I enjoyed Ranger Faramir teaching the kids - I wonder if any of them will eventually join Gaer in Ithilien, if Gaer really does become a Ranger...That would be cool. More adventures of Rusco The Puppy! Arwen really is clueless; there's no need to tote the puppy around anywhere, unless he were sick. Instead of bothering with a fussy collar that he'll outgrow quite soon where a sturdy leather collar would work well (she can get him a jewel-studded one when he's mature), she should be teaching Rusco to come when called, and sitting, staying, all that stuff that he'll need if he's going to be a house pet in Minas Tirith as well as, possibly, a hunting dog. And what about housebreaking the critter? (I see by your links that Rusco is modelled on a Hamiltonstovare - very good choice of breed,as I thought the pup would be of foxhound ancestry) Speaking of puppies and dogs; if the hounds of Rohan are flea-bitten, as Eowyn mentioned, and at least some of them spend time in Meduseld, as I believe you implied, then I would think that the Golden Hall would be thoroughly flea-infested by now; unless there's some herbal remedy that actually works (in my personal vision of LOTR; Middle-earth does have herbs that repel and kill such pests) along with most of its residents - ouch. Can't wait to see what Arwen plans to do to Eowyn's hair...

Author's reply

Hee! Yeah, Faramir went at it. Finally indeed, you haven't had cutesy Eomer/Faramir/Eowyn scenes at the harvest festival pounding at you for weeks!! ;) Arwen's spoiling that dog. Heh, let her. I think after giving up her eternal life she can spoil a puppy or two. The Queen could probably grab up a new collar every time he pops out of the old so I don't think that's an issue to her. Oh, LOL, this pup's going to get some obedience training when they take him home and he's playing in the pool around the White Tree. LOL, that's not proper behavior. Hamiltonstovare's are cute. Just cute and they're very similar in look to the fox hound but I wanted a stockier dog since the Rohirrim are a stocky people. Also, I want one. :) Well, certain herbs keep bugs away--hence Éowyn renewing the straw on the floors. I can't remember them at the moment but I assure you I do research this stuff and try to make it somewhat realistic. All of Faramir's "wood craft" is real! I have spent forever, I'll tell you, on that stuff. I don't know about the kids but Ranger Gaer is going to be awesome. Of course he's going to be awesome the entire time and especially when Faramir's little enemy tries to mess with him again. Sigh, my fingers are going to fall off. Ah, the hair comes in next chapter. Hee.

:::cheering wildly::: Way to go, Faramir! Whew. Gotta sit back down before the little ones notice and ask what's going on. (Mama, isn't it quiet time? How come you're not being quiet?) I'm glad he ummm... er... cleared the air.

Author's reply

Oh YAY! You liked it, too. I thought it was bordering on too strong, I mean, Eomer was about to cry. But he did deserve this little wake-up call. LOL, shh, go back to quiet time. I hear that's good. Yep, air is all cleared up now. *cracks knuckles over keyboard* Righty-o, we can get started! :D

Chibi_kaz · 9 November 2004 · Chapter 63: Larcwide?

Hurling!!! I *love* hurling, it's such fun, a cross between rugby and field hockey. We play it all the time in my medieval recreation group. I still think Faramir is not standing up for himself like he should. But I'm trying to be patient and let you develop things your own way. Cheers, Chibi-kaz

Author's reply

Faramir isn't but thanks for your patience...I'm sure by now you know I'm as slow as a crippled snail. :) Odd because in my life I'm an extremely impatient person--hence my updating and then checking constantly for new reviews only 10 minutes later. ;) I guess writing this is so much fun I want it to last as long as possible.

Lady of The Wood · 9 November 2004 · Chapter 63: Larcwide?

Thank the Valar for word! I just finished reading the latest, then I noticed you had reformated. Thanks for that! It is appreciated. Interesting chapter. Arwen's goodbye to Elrond and the departure of the fellowship brought the time line back into the story along with a little bit of canon plot as well. Did Aragorn leave with them and then return? I honestly can't remember and I wasn't sure if he did in your chapter either? Thank you for that last bit with Gandalf especially him telling Eowyn that Faramir was one of his favorites. Loved that. It's nice to know that Faramir's surrogate father is looking out for him. I enjoyed the scene with the field hockey/lacrosse game. I got a sudden image in my head of a shirt-less Daniel Day Lewis playing Lacross at the beginning of "Last of the Mohicans", very hot. Not that I'd pick Daniel as Faramir but he's pretty close. Specially the long dark hair.mmmmm.... ;) I find it interesting that Faramir is being portrayed as a man who's acceptance by his men was based on his status and that he seems to have never undergone the good natured hazing that most men entering that type of situation have to endure. My understanding of the character was that Faramir was a man who was loved inspite of his status as the son of Steward. That he was a man of the people. In Ithilien he was one of the Rangers, their captain but one of the men. In fact I can imagine that Denethor might have been one of these fathers who sent his sons to places to learn where they wouldn't have been treated delicately, where they would have had to earn their acceptance. Hence both Boromir and Faramir being so loved by the men they commanded. I see this Faramir when he's teaching but he's often absent in showing his insecurities with the Rohirrim and considering Faramir's age and experience it seems to me to be out of character. I'm not sure that Tolkien's Faramir would have made the slip he did with Gaer, but then Tolkien's Faramir is darn near the perfect man and the story would be boring if everyone were perfect. :) That being said I don't think Faramir meant in anyway to insult the Rohirric people or their culture. Faramir is a man of learning and he was getting an opportunity to enthuse about something he loves and he hasn't had much opportunity to do that in Rohan. Was Faramir thumbing his nose at Gaer a little bit when he asked him if he could read? Probably, if not necessarily consciously. Knowing how to read is a sign of status and often, if incorrectly, associated with intelligence. And considering that Faramir has been putting up with a lot insults to himself and his people he took the opportunity to get in a dig for his side; unfortunately Gaer happened to be the nearest and easiest target. It's something most of us have done at one time or another when pushed to our limits. I for one can forgive Faramir for a slip he seems to deeply regret and I hope Gaer can too. As for the class systems in middle-earth, Tolkien's world seems to be pretty strictly divided and for the inhabitants of this world, it is an unchallenged and, in their eyes, a good thing. The story is written about land where it is accepted that there are those who rule and those who's job it is be of service. It's all through the book, from Frodo and Sam to the wizard hierachy, including Rohan and its King. I suspect that the people of Rohan would have been well aware of who ruled in Gondor and vise versa, especially since the son of the late ruler was marrying their Lady. It would be a pretty darn big event and I'd bet that every Tom, Dick and Beowulf would know who Faramir was and how to treat him whether he was riding as one of the Rohirrim or not. Finally I loved the referrence to Gollum and the fish. Nicely done! It happens in such a nice peaceful moment and whoosh there it is. It reminded me of all that had happened in the recent past and that for these people the war really has just ended. The orc references were good too. I did wonder what happened to them. Whew! What a long review. As always I'm greatly enjoying your story. I wouldn't write so much if I didn't. I can't wait for more! Good luck too with your studies. LOTW

Author's reply

Aragorn left and rode to Isengard where I think he got the keys from Treebeard and the palantir. Then he said goodbye and he's coming back to Edoras. It takes him a little over a week I think to get to Isengard. I'm betting he travels faster on the return trip--no hobbit ponies or elven nobility to pamper with slow gaits, just him and I'm assuming a company of royal guards. I doubt Middle-Earth is safe enough yet for the King to go riding about with only one man or so. Eww, Daniel Day Lewis is gross! Maybe I got into a bad picture. He does have the long dark hair, though. Yes, Faramir as perfect would be rather boring. :) Good thing I'm not writing that. yes...good thing. Heh. :D Well, all I can say about Faramir is that he can relax with his students and not have to be on guard for attacks. He can be himself. And, you are correct--Faramir didn't mean the reading thing as an insult, sort of "hey, I'm the Prince here! I'm better than you!" No, he was trying to meld minds, trying to come back at Gaer's "look what you're missing" remark. Frankly, I think their friendship is more realistic and Gaer is more of a full character if they have a bit of rockiness. Few people automatically have a perfect bond, you know? Yeah, Gaer forgives and they make up. I want this to be a strong friendship so they talk a lot later. Gaer goes to Gondor in the future so this HAS to be a strong friendship, so I have to spend some time on it. As for how to treat Faramir, you bet they know the proper behavior but has Éomer once indicated they should treat him correctly? These guys are almost acting under unspoken royal permission to be dicks. Éomer could have broken that fight up and punished the man who started it but he didn't. Which is totally assholish but Faramir won some brownie points with the Rohirrim in playing the game and not folding like a little wussy when he got stomped. Go Faramir! :) And very soon he'll stop being tormented, I promise. He's going to be one of the gang, especially when Éomer and he start being friends. :) (about damn time, eh?) I liked the Gandalf and the Gollum parts, too. The orcs I was uncertain about putting in, but I needed a valid reason for Elfhelm to come and delay Eomer. So, we've got the last of the orcs. It would be nice if I could realistically have Faramir kill a few and impress everyone. Dunno. Thanks for the luck. This is a long reply, but I love commentary even if you don't always agree with my characters' actions!

Chibi-Kaz · 8 November 2004 · Chapter 63: Larcwide?

Well, it's definately good to see an update! I was very pleased w/ Gaer for chewing Faramir out. First, Faramir's attitude was superior and rude. Secondly, he's done far far too much angsting, even with his enjoyment of teaching the lads. Yes, the societies are very different, but they are all men of the west, so to speak, and Gondor and Rohan have had close enough relations that they should at least be knowledgeable of each other's ways. Perhaps you're making Gondor out to be a bit too classist? I don't like 'Larcwide'. It still doesn't suit. No matter what his personal preferences, Faramir commanded what is effectively a special ops unit in hostile territory for at least 15 years. At some point, I'd love to see him snap and act like the commander he can be. yes, we saw a bit of how dangerous he can be before with the 'fight', but I'd like to see more. At the very least, let Faramir snap back at Gaer. (Oh, suggestions for casting of Gaer -- norwegian actor Dennis Storhoi. He played "Herger" in 'The 13th Warrior'.) --Cheers, --Chibi-Kaz

Author's reply

Yep, Faramir deserved that and probably more, because though he is technically way superior to a simple soldier--he doesn't have to act like it! Especially not to a guy going out of his way to be his friend. He insulted the hell out of Gaer and he's lucky Gaer's a very nice, very non-tempermental guy. Also, Gaer insulted him with the mocking of the men of Mundburg to the other Rohirrim and the "they believe that" remark. That was B.S. because if Gaer is Faramir's friend then he should not make fun of him like that, jokes are one thing, but that was totally inappropriate rudeness. They're not going to mesh perfectly but they'll get a good friendship out of this. Well, society was classist as crap back then (as I'm sure you know, I hate it when someone writes things like that all righteously) and I'm assuming with all the formality that Gondor apparently had that it was more strict and well, Gondor's way more advanced than Rohan. Certainly they would be a tad snobbish. And Rohan, a simpler country and people, might be defensive out of self-defense. Faramir's going to get his snapping out soon. He doesn't have a clear target with the whole bedroll thing, suspicions, yes, but no clear target otherwise, yeah, heads would roll. He's actually going to get a LOT of digs in at Eomer, get him back for all those rude comments and do it in style. :D We're casting now? heh. Seriously, I loved this guy in 'The 13th Warrior' which was an awesome movie. He's perfect as hell for Gaer. Just dye him redhead. :D I don't like Larcwide, either, for an end all name. Not good enough, too blah but hey, Gaer doesn't have that much to work with yet, does he?

I wanted to mention about the formating. If they can't fix it... I copied it into Word so I would not have to scroll over. Just a thought for any of you diehards who have not read it yet.

Author's reply

diehards. Heh. I've fixed it but the fonts still small. Actually copying it to Word would be better if they wish. Sorry, I think the chapter was just too long for it to handle.

Adamas · 7 November 2004 · Chapter 63: Larcwide?

Another fine chapter… I enjoyed every word. I loved all the scenes with Faramir and his students. I like the way they are awed by him and his Ranger ways. I think its amusing all the questions from the students about Eowyn. The conversation with Aragorn and Eowyn was good. “You help me; I’ll help you.” I am very anxious to see this play. I also loved the parting words of Gandalf… “To test fate once more would be folly, do you not agree?” Gandalf is awesome! I was concerned about Gaer and Faramir, that was a huge blunter on Faramir’s part about the written word. I am a bookworm and I can easily see myself making that kind of an innocent but disastrous mistake. I also loved what Gaer told Faramir in their last conversation together. “You already have the Lady, don’t you?” … “Then flatter my Lord.” I can’t wait to read how the Faramir and Eomer relationship works out. Thank you again for sharing your time and talent. I really enjoyed the whole chapter start to finish. Thank you for your regular updates. I know that it can be hard to have spare time to write for your followers in the middle of a semester. I really can’t stand it when I get hooked on a story that the writer does not update for months and months leaving their followers hanging. I know that with your lively followers we would pester you too much to let you get away with not updating regularly. But I am still very appreciative of your time and talent. Thank you, again. As always please don’t keep us wanting to long.

those students are about to get really awed...after all, Faramir's just been going about doing simple stuff, wait until he decides to show off!! I like Aragorn/Eowyn interaction. They'll get a lot in Gondor. Gaer and Faramir get a little rocky here, but they pull through. Good for Faramir, lol, because he needs friendship. Gaer's trying to tell him what he needs to do, Gaer's outside the situation and that's always the POV that's right. Ah, all I can say about my studies is they keep me from updating way faster...seriously, I'd rather be writing this story than sitting in math class trying to figure out ANYTHING the teacher says or history where I'm falling asleep.

Lady of The Wood · 7 November 2004 · Chapter 63: Larcwide?

Just a quick note about the formating as well. I hope you can decrease the width. I gave up trying to read the chapter because of the continuous scrolling. I hope you can fix it. :)Love the story and looking forward to more.

Author's reply

Okay, I've made it so you don't have to scroll back and forth. God, that was annoying just looking at it. Anyway, the font is a little small but I don't think there's anything else I can do. I think I just posted too much, there had to be a limit somewhere, huh? I'll just make sure to not go over it again. Hope you can finish the chapter now!
