My goodness! This is turning into a novel. That's okay...it's very enjoyable! The Eowyn/hobbit scenes amused me so much thatI haven't even read the Faramir/Eomer scenes yet, but I will. Shadowfax is such a character. It's good to have him on your side. I was cracking up so hard with Pip and Merry acting like Eowyn kids, especially with the end of this chapter. Pippin is so naughty! I hope Eowyn gets himfor that :D Please keep going!
I just realized this story was rated R. Has it always been?

I should probably be flogged for not reviewing as I should......
This first statement is for some of those reviewers; Why the enmity toward the men? I'm a guy, and in some ways a typical one, but I don't think I'm such a bad person. Leastways not because I was assembled a bit differently in the womb. True, I suppose the whole fight could be seen as immature, but both Eomer and Faramir seem to display typical yet healthy male psychological behavior. Boys will be boys, as the saying goes. Give them a break. :)
Eowyn seems so confused about her feelings, which is quite appropriate. I'm assuming the trip with the Hobbits was meant to acquaint her with the worst times of being a mother? I agree with Crimson that it's a neccessary thing to have, but I'm afraid this story is going to be two hundred chapters long at the end. Which, btw, is fine by me. :)
It's nice to see the humble side of Eomer. Heck, it's nice to see any facet of his personality. He's a great guy all around. :)
Maybe I've said this before, but I have to admit that Aragorn seems a little OC. However, I can understand that to a degree. It's one thing to spend decades preparing for your destiny as king, and quite another to face it. I'd go nuts too if I had to deal with those counselers.
One question before I close; Why is this story rated R? It's seems fairly PG-13 so far. :)
Author's reply
Yeah, the length of the story is vaguely troubling to me as well. But oh well. If you keep reading.... ;)
Oh, the rating? Well, I dunno, I guess I was thinking of later chapters, besides being prepared for whatever I might throw in. I mean, come on, you can't expect to read the entire thing without a wedding night can you? ;)

Poor Eowyn. She needs a break from all of these guys. Aragorn is amusing, too, with his paranoia about Merry and Pippin. thanks for this chapter, I'm looking forward to the next one!

Reply to Fair Lady:
I'm sure the writer will respond to your comments herself (or himself -- but I'm assuming it's a she), but I wanted to back her up on her decision to draw out the day after the big fight scene. I might be totally wrong here, but I think the chapters with Eowyn and the hobbits were essential in order to show Eowyn's character growth. The story isn't just about Faramir winning Eowyn's love and trust. It's also about Eowyn lightening up. Tolkien, after all, describes her with phrases like "the cold maiden of the Rohirrim," "stern of face," "fair and cold," and "stern as steel." All of which is understandable when you consider her life before meeting Faramir (orphaned, lonely, isolated, stalked by a creepy man with poor personal hygiene, etc.). In the course of one day with Merry and Pippin, she has had to share a bed with two adult males, be kissed by one of them while he leers down her shirt, and pretend like she's their "mother." So, IMHO, the writer used this side story as a plot device to develop Eowyn's character. Just the night before, Faramir made a huge faux pas with his "Nothing she didn't WANT me to do" comment. I'm sure the proud (and prim) Eowyn was mortified by the implications of that remark. But she's had a lot of her stilted virginal aloofness smacked out of her in the course of her adventures with Merry and Pippin. So let's see how the next chapter plays out when she confronts Faramir. I think we'll see the difference between pre-"Pipe Weed Adventure" Eowyn and post-"Pipe Weed Adventure" Eowyn. Or I could be totally wrong... Feel free to disagree.
But I agree that this writer seems to take perverse pleasure in keeping her audience hanging! (As you can see from my past reviews, I've even threatened her with literary monsters -- with limited success I'm afraid).
Author's reply
Actually, I am a she, but hey, that's right, keep it fair. :)
Yes, that is what is happening, Eowyn is a major character and, perhaps the summary is misleading, but...uh, actually, if I can be honest----(hangs head)it WAS Faramir's story, and well (shuffles feet) Eowyn and Eomer wanted a say. Who can resist them? I ask you WHO?
So, yes, this is character development for her. Faramir's will come in Rohan, he's going to get a lot of challenges there. Hee.
Soooooo sorry about the shortness of this chapter, but, if I'd stayed at school any longer I would have fallen asleep driving and NEVER finished the story. Choose which option you prefer. ;) Meanwhile, I'll study my head off for theatre class so I can get a scholarship, but I will produce a chapter today. Yes, I totally will and man, I can't wait!

Loved the chapter! I could so sympathize with Eowyn... Tired. Dirty. Willing to forgive anything for a bath and a long nap... Her back and forth with Eomer was CLASSIC! He musters the humility to grovel for an apology, and she takes him off guard by forgiving him before he can start. Then he starts making the case against himself. Classic! You played the scene against type. The cliche would be to have her refuse to forgive him, blah, blah, blah. Instead she essentially says, "You never listen to me anyway so just leave me alone." And then she starts to cry, which makes no sense and perfect sense at the same time. I can't wait to see how the scene plays out with Faramir.
I think what I like the most about this story is that in your rendering of Tolkien's characters you've given them an internal logic that seems to be both unique to you and ostensibly true to the books. Take Aragorn, for example. Your depiction of him is so comical and yet for some reason he doesn't seem to lose any of his Tolkienesque dignity. But maybe that's just for me. I'm not sure how other people feel about it -- or if they care. (Speaking of Aragorn, this line was brilliant: "Aragorn stopped short. 'How'd you know about... that?' He rubbed his forearm somewhat self-consciously.")
BTW, don't think I didn't notice the absence of songs (dirty or otherwise) in this chapter. Even so, I've decided to be magnanimous and call off Grendel. He's back to "marauding the heath and desolate fens" with the rest of the Cain family. But I'm afraid I can't help you with his Mother. She answers to no one (with the possible exception of Seamus Heaney). Keep a look out for her...
In the meantime, WRITE ON!
Author's reply
The songs and I had a disagreement about their content. Sorry. But, they will be there dammit! I swear, by my life or death I can give you songs, I will! Hopefully not death.. ;)

I really liked your story. I like the idea of Faramir winning Eowyn for real not as easily as the book paints it. I do think that Faramir would have to have worked hard to win the love and trust of Eowyn. I like the room scene and the fight that came afterward. I just felt like the whole day before they meet again went on too long. Maybe it is time to bring some closure to these characters or at least do not drag too long on one scene or ideas...move on and keep keeping the reader in the kind of suspense that the story had in the beginning.
Author's reply
Thanks for reviewing. As I've mentioned in my reply to Crimson, Eowyn's little excursion was character development, she's getting exposed to more things with less than adverse, if annoying, consequences. Thanks, though, for saying what you think. I love reviews, even if a teensy bit critical. Makes me keep sharp and not slack off! ;)

Ah! Alas, only two people Eowyn loves left in this world, and to her they seem to hate each other! I'd cry too. I can only hope the three of them get this nonsense straightened out soon, or Faramir might think she won't marry him, and things could get really ugly! ALAS!
Cheers,
Chibi-Kaz
Author's reply
I love how you put that--the only two people and to her they seem to hate each other--it's perfect. :) This story is just as much about these two siblings as it is about Faramir, I think. (whispers "They stole his story. I couldn't do anything. I swear.")
Well, things will be straightened, and hopefully in a heartfelt, angsty way soon. Alas! is the word indeed. :)

Indeed.
Glad your hobbits have got their priorities straight.
I wasn't going to take the time to read until tomorrow because I cannot keep my eyes open, but your story summary sucked me in as it usually does. I keep wanting to leave a review on the *summary*, ha. It's a good one.
Enjoyed the chapter as well. Write on!

Dirty...hmmm? It seems we've gone from Beowulf to the Canterbury Tales -- with Eowyn singing a fabliau! By the time you get them to Rohan, they'll be reciting sonnets and gearing up to "justify the ways of God to man..."
I'm debating if I should wait for the next chapter (i.e. ditch the friends I was suppose to meet) or leave now and log in later for the next installment. Ah, hell, unless it materializes in the next 5 minutes I gotta go. But it better be up there by at least midnight PDT (that gives you approximately 3 and a half hours). Or else this time I will sick Grendel on you!
And his Mom!
Author's reply
Darn that Grendel, but I can't rush this chapter. It promises to be very good. Hee. :) Maybe tomorrow. I know, I know, I'm going to be going home wishing I had a keyboard in front of me the whole way so I can finish. Getting up early sucks.

Well put 'em in there, damn it! What are you waiting for -- an invitation?! Geeze-o-pete, it's not like you haven't built up the suspense! I've been waiting patiently for this. I was half-tempted to write in and suggest you just "borrow" some ancient Anglo-Saxon poem (I'm sure the 6th century Irish monk who transcribed it won't mind)...

I laughed so hard over this chapter, I have everyone in my office staring at me. Perhaps I should not read during work......

I chuckled at: "She resisted the urge to smack him hard"
I laughed at: "'We'd love to come,' she said sweetly to Genry. 'They're just a bit excitable.'"
I laughed out loud at: "Oh no, dear, oh no, Mother doesn't play those games, she thought and paused, one hand abruptly flying out to grasp his collar."
I fell on the floor laughing at: "Pippin smiled sweetly and kissed her, a hearty smack! on the mouth."
I started crying from laughter at: "She'd taken out and cut off half the laces of her shirt to tie their pillowcases full of pipe-weed together and now Éowyn wondered if he was looking straight down the thing."
That was brilliant! Bravo!

I can tell you're having as much fun writing this as we are reading! I chuckled at "Éowyn thought, surely he’ll strain something" and then laughed out loud at "Mother, can we?"
Now don't get so caught up in the Old English translations that you make us wait! If you fudge the endings of a few verbs here or there, I promise no one will sick Grendel on you...or his mother...
Author's reply
Oh, my, I just have to say, this is probably the funniest chapter I've ever written!!! I'm just sitting here giggling uncontrollably! Oh wow, the people around me must think I'm insane. I've already got over 2000 words, I just want to get Eowyn, Merry and Pippin to camp before I post it.
Oh, darn, Eowyn singing, may have to wait until the next chapter. DANG. I have to write a song, though, and if you want something that's good you have to give my Muse time to recover after this gem.
LOL on the Grendel. I liked that book, the more modern one I had to read in high school. I also like Beowulf, too.

"Mother, can we?"
It took all of three words to reduce me to a fit of laughter. i can't wait for the next chapter, to see what the hobbits are up to. Great story, I love it!
Author's reply
Thanks! Ha, I've had those three words in my head all weekend. You try living with that. ;)

Merry asked, “Mother, can we?” She just stared, her mouth open.
This line is great! Will they go? I'd like to see how long Merry (and Pippin) can pretend to be Eowyn's kids without bursting into laughter and what Eowyn does to them afterward :) I also can't wait to see what Frodo and Sam have to say about this little field trip.
I like Aragon stamping his seal down in the last chapter, and the councillors reaction to it - was it just me, or did that finally get them to behave?
I was looking at the other reviews and response to them, and are you really going to have Eowyn sing? And if you do, can she sing in Rohirric? Eowyn singing does seem appropriate, somehow.
Author's reply
hehe, i loved doing this chapter and I'm working on the next, but man, my fingers are tired. Yeah, I'll have her sing in Rohirric, with translations at the bottom, of course. That might take a while, though. But, hopefully, it will be worth it. ;)
hehe, i can't wait for the next chapter. this story is soooooo much fun to write!!!

I have another question/thought/suggestion for you. Seeing as how Faramir is an artist (whose talent impresses Eowyn), will you also give Eowyn a talent that impresses Faramir? My suggestion is to make her a gifted singer, which I think would correspond nicely with her culture -- seeing as how Aragorn onced described the people of the Mark as having no books but being great singers of songs (hell, they even sing while slaying their enemies in battle!). It would also be especially poignant because a few chapters back Faramir told Eowyn that although he remembers very little about his mother, he does remember her singing to him.
Just a thought. Use it or ignorant. Either way, keep writing!
Author's reply
Hmm, a singer? actually, that works for this chapter. Great suggestion! Thanks!

I think Faramir ought to get some flowers or poetry or something ready to give Eowyn when she returns! He's going to need to do something to soften the blow. Maybe he should finish that sketch he was working on!
Again, great work. Don't leave us hanging... Post some more!
Author's reply
Geez, I have to write poetry? Yikes, I wasnt planning on that for a while. ;) I'm working on the next chapter right now, I just walked out of psych., I hung around just long enough to figure out the test wasnt till next week and I was out of there!
Hmm, the sketch? possibly, but he's gonna get inspired to do another one later, so I dont know. I agree, he does have to do something, though.

"“Just to share a word and perhaps accompany you to wherever it is you’re going. Such a beautiful woman like you shouldn’t be in such a hurry…for anything.” Elphir smiled charmingly as he spoke the last sentence, offering his arm. Éowyn ignored it. "

Oh my gracious...I don't know where to begin! You've poured chapters out like water from a pitch (which I'm not complaining about at all!) and it's been hard for me to keep up with reviewing it. I'm still adoring this story very much! You kind of lost me there for a few chapters when Faramir was in counsel, but I came back after those chapters and now I'm way into this story again. It's just so interesting the way you're weaving things together. I love your writing style.
The way you write Eowyn just screams her...if that makes sense. She's pretty fierce. I was cracking up when she was beating Faramir, which isn't nice since he's one of my fave characters but it was so amusing :D Sometimes I wonder about Faramir. He's a good guy, but in certain moments he seems a bit anxious about things...lol! The fight scene was great written clearly.
I surely can't wait to get home and read these new chapters. Eowyn with the hobbits is so cute! Very good stuff...keep up the good work!

Thanks for reviewing! I'm glad I caught you back after the council, not my fav part either ;)

Wonderful, as always! So Éomer and Faramir have agreed on a truce. And Faramir is allowed to meet Éowyn without a guard, though Éomer remains suspicious. Éowyn's reaction to his fight with Faramir has really unsettled him. While I was reading this passage I always thought, come on guys, sit down and have breakfast together, but that'd been hoping for too much at that point.
Another subtle thing I also love in your story is Faramir's inability to read the hearts of the Rohirrim. That's a little thing but reveals so much about the different cultures and Faramir's lack of knowledge of the Rohirrim culture.
Other than that, I am glad that Merry, Pippin and Éowyn (and Shadowfax, of course) are enjoying their day out. I don't know what awaits them when they return and I fear that no small amount of the Pipe-weed that Merry and Pippin gathered will be needed to appease an angered wizard and an angry King of Gondor.
Author's reply
Can you just imagine that breakfast? Hehe, I can.
Awkward silence.
Faramir(hesitates, then very politely): "Pass the pepper, please."
Eomer(barely looks up, then hands it over): "Here."
Faramir: "Thank you."
Eomer(Snickering to himself): "You're welcome."
Pause. Faramir uses pepper and it comes out all over his plate.
Faramir: "I hate you."
Eomer (smirking some more): "I guess it's just too bad you love my sister, then."
Faramir glaring. Awkward silence resumes.
HA! Okay, maybe that wasn't funny to anyone but me, but I'm laughing. (maybe its the caffeine pills, who knows?)

This story is getting better and better (not that it had been bad in the beginning). Frodo and Sam's breakfast company was ... interesting ... to say the least. I am glad, though, that Éomer and Faramir have laid their quarrels aside ... for a time. I wonder how long especially Éomer will manage to hold his temper in check.
Oh, and I was full of sympathy for Éomer's growling stomach and his suffering at the sight of Frodo and Sam's breakfast. My stomach started to grumble at the mere description. Never read Hobbit-centric chapters before breakfast!
Author's reply
Thanks for thinking the story's getting better. (hopefully now it won't start getting worse) ;)
Eomer's temper all depends on Faramir's actions. Heh, notice the question mark? It's up in the air at this point, though the fact that Eomer only has to tolerate him for one more day is greatly influencing his behavior towards the positive approach. That, of course, and the wrong impression that Eowyn was so angry she ignored him sleeping in her room, acting as though he didn't exist.
These are two strong willed men who are slowly going to begin to realize they're competing for the closest postion to Eowyn's heart and things always get worse before they get better.
So, I guess the story can't go bad with that can it? :)
