I think this is wonderful. Poor Glorfindel, yet another inaccurate song. This is one of the many reasons I don't want to be famous.
Vi Janaway · 6 January 2005 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
This is so very good. The rhyme scheme and rhythm track so nicely...I do fear for Erestor, :) :) :) Vi

That was an absolutely adorable story. I loved every minute of it. Thanks for the laughs. ~ Carol ~

I read the "more historically accurate", version but still found I preferred your "hysterically accurate" form. Thank you. The older I get, the more events from my younger days I would prefer to let slide into obscurity - how much more would an elf have to ponder? And an elf pre-stamped with "Hero, Balrog-slayer, living legend" would probably overhear more than one "discussion" on his life/prowess. Thank you!.
Author's reply
Thanks for the nice review. Actually, I debate whether to keep the "more historically accurate" version up at all. It's the version I started with, and then I asked myself, "What would poor Glorfindel make of this?"
Chathol-linn · 27 August 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
This was truly funny! The poem itself was completely Tolkienesque in tone, rhythm, and use of words. You captured the earnest nature of young Estel's hero worship beautifully. I could just see him warming to his subject as he approached the great contest with the Balrog. And the humorous struggle between Glorfindel and Elrond was a gentle echo of the heroic fight; a good story-telling technique. But I liked the poem in its context best of all. Very nice job! Regards - Chathol-linn
Author's reply
I'm so glad you found it Tolkienesque! That was the ultimate compliment.

Brilliant!!! Poor Glorfindel - it had me laughing. I'd always wondered how much of the great songs would have been made up, I suppose it's like *our* heroes - Robin Hood and all that lot, except that he's not around to correct them :D I'd love to find out what Glorfindel's revenge was...
Author's reply
Yes, I think all great legends must grow in the telling over the years - it would be odd if the original hero was around to correct the mistakes. A Glorfindel "revenge" fic is simmering in the back of my mind. When it's ready, I'll post it here.

Hi, Antogone! snort! Poor Glorfindel... but I hope Erestor will get his one time, too. This was very amusing and very well written, and I can see it happen in the "Light In May" universe anytime, too. Very funny! Thank you! Aislynn
Author's reply
I had it in mind as taking place just after the dinner table scene in chapter 7, although, as you say, it could take place any time.
Elena Tiriel · 21 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
Wow, Antigone, that is incredible! I am impressed that you wrote that whole song yourself -- very nicely done! But what I especially love is your imaginative glimpse into a scene that might well have happened, but no one has written about before. Glorfindel's reactions seem just right, and I can just see Estel being so proud of himself! Very funny! Thank you! - Barbara P.S. A subtle hint to your Muse: I, too, would love to see a sequel where Glorfindel confronts or takes revenge upon Erestor...
Author's reply
Thanks. I started to write one of those Glorfindel-fought-the-Balrog poems, and then thought to myself, "What on earth would poor Glorfindel think, having to listen to this?"
Orophins Dottir · 21 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
"A crown of flowers?" muttered Glorfindel incredulously, "While fighting dragons? And those towers were made of pure stone!" Ah, the poor, poor Lord of the House of the Golden Flower! Oh, my! I loved this. I am sure everyone will be screaming for you to let us know what Glorfy does to Erestor. Include me in that horde. I also particularly like his righteous indignation that he would have left the rear "undefended". I am with you on pronunciation. As far as I can determine from Tolkien, this would be the way to go. I also do the same with Erestor and Mithrandir.
Author's reply
Yes, there are several people who want a sequel, it seems. Book of Lost Tales 2 does in fact imply that most of the "women and sick" (Tolkien's words, not mine, believe me!) had been sent rearward for safety, but that Glorfindel, at least, was already there. So to say that there was "nobody" in the back was probably especially insulting to him.

wow! this was great! i really really loved it! and the poem was mesmerizing! your writing style is beautiful and your vocabulary is rich and wonderful!

Thank you; I do work hard on style - it's nice of you to comment on that.
Kal · 20 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
Poor Glorfindel; it must be awful to have to sit through people singing praises to you. o.O A crown of flowers... while fighting fire-breathing dragons. Oh yes, a crown of flowers is most DEFINITELY what I would want to wear while doing so. [/sarcasm]
Author's reply
Yes, imagine if someone kept announcing the wonderful thing you had done a long, long time ago. I'd think it would be sort of like your Mom bringing out your second-grade spelling paper every time your friends come over. No, you don't want to wear flowers while fighting dragons...but if the song hadn't been appropriately embarrassing, where would the fun have been?
daw the minstrel · 20 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
I am so impressed that you can write a poem of this length! Or of any length for that matter. I have to admit I have been pronouncing Glorfindel's name with the emphasis on the first syllable, but I kind of like the sound of the way you do it.
Author's reply
I was surprised at myself for writing this - I don't think I've written anything but free verse since I took a class on sonnets in college some years ago. When I started the poem, I discovered that I was using both Glor'-fin-del and Glor-fin'-del, and I decided I had better pick one or the other - lol.
Nilmandra · 20 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
I have been trying to review all morning, but the Golden One wouldn't let me! He is in as much of a state as he is in your story! I loved it - and I do not believe this is a 'songfic' - you wrote it yourself (awesome, by the way) and your character is singing it. Much like Avon's story 'Red and Green Leaves' - I think this is an appropriate use of song in a Middle-earth story.
Author's reply
It began as sort of a Tennyson-style poem, and then Glorfindel's horrified reaction came to me very clearly. So I got kind of a funny story out of it, instead.
LOTR lover · 20 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
Oh, yes, I can just imagine that Glorfindel would be tired of hearing about his death! Good poem, though, and little Estel singing it is so cute. I love Glorfindel's interruptions, and his being shushed by the others. And I'm sure Erestor will eventually get his....
Author's reply
My thought was that Glorfindel has lived a long, long time, and must know all these songs inside-out. Yes, Erestor will get his...some time.
runaround · 20 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
absolutely hilarious and way too cute. I wanna know about Glorfindel's revenge on Erestor
Author's reply
Lots of people want to know about Glorfindel's revenge, it seems. I'll have to think about it some more.
Miriel · 20 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
LOL...knowing the story of Gondolin from the Book of Lost Tales, I must say it was humerous to read this rendition of the tale. :-) I loved this! Thank you.
Author's reply
Yep, the poem was inspired by the Book of Lost Tales...with some poetic license, as Glorfindel noted during Estel's rendition.
Lairewen · 20 January 2004 · Chapter 1: Glorfindel Fair
A sequel! This needs a sequel! I want to see Glorfindel get revenge on Erestor! That was so funny and the poem was great! When I first read the history of ME and found how Glorfindel fell, I always thought it was somewhat embarassing! That captured it perfectly!
Author's reply
I'm happy you liked it. Yes, it was the HoME version that inspired me, and I may write a sequel if I find an original idea.
