I have to say that growing up is agreeing with Legolas. It is nice to see him maturing, becoming not only an expert at weapons, but skilled in battle, and getting along well in a company of warriors. Family life has never seemed better either. Being away is, I am sure, hard on Adar, but it only makes Legolas more appreciative of his family. Hopefully warriors have long periods of time at home between patrols, so that they can have a life outside of just their jobs. And poor Eilian. I must go comfort him. I also would not entirely believe what Solith says, but it will take time for Eilian and Celuwen to both get over this. Another good story completed. Looking forward to the next one :D

I could not have done it without you, Beta. And I agree. Legolas did rather well in his first patrol. His captain and his fellow warriors are all relaxing around him as he is around them. And I think that even his family will eventually come to see him as competent and separate from them, and then they can all move closer again. Eilian is so grateful to have you!

The Karenator · 29 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Warriors

I'm suffering from a combination of delight at finding a new chapter and shadow sickness that it's the last. You wrapped this one up with your usual skill of insight into your characters and balanced it with an old fashioned good read. I'm glad you have insight, because poor Tinar is blind as a bat. Foril's song was a hoot and it was one that everyone 'got' but the victim. Tinar is so much fun to hate. Certainly, it was good to see Legolas get a chance to go home. I had wondered if Thranduil sensed something was amiss with his youngest when Legolas was wounded. Ithilden handled himself well when faced with the injury of his 'baby brother' and even gained some insight into his own mistakes with Eilian. BUT, my favorite scene was with Thranduil and Beliond....and that says a lot since Eilian did drop his clothes all over his chamber on the way to his bath. The more I see of the Beliond, the more I like him. He's not just a good babysitter, he's a wise elf who was not afraid to be honest with his king about his task. I loved the line where he said Legolas reminded him of Thranduil at his age, but was more biddable. Well, that was a good reminder to the king that he had once been a handful, too....and still is in his own way. Fortunately, Thranduil was able to put aside his fatherly fear and see the wisdom of Beliond's words. I stood up and cheered! Eilian...Eilian...Eilian...When will he ever rein in his own demons? He may still be young, but he should know better. My heart goes out to him, but I also want to thunk him upside his thick head. What was he thinking partying hearty and hanging out with other maidens when he made a promise to Celuwen. I'd say that while he does love her, he's just not reached a maturity level to understand the committment of such feelings. At least, he was able to swallow his pride and do what it took to see her safe. Still, I hold that the sour old Solith has also contributed to the problems. Not to mention that I continue to think he's a poor leader if he lets his own personal feelings about his daughter's choice of 'friends' influence the decisions he makes in regards to his people. “Knowing we are respected by those who guard us will help us to feel comfortable in our new home.” Baloney! He was mainpulating the circumstances in order to drive the wedge between Celuwen and Eilian even deeper. I'm sure he loves his daughter, but he has not acted wisely as a leader..and, maybe, not even as a father. As a matter of fact, I may just bang his and Eilian's heads together. POOR Celuwen. She's surrounded by idiot males. A bright point was certainly the news of Annael's betrothal. I hope we all get invited. I've already started looking for the proper frock. Wonderful as always, Daw. I can't wait for the next story. Take care! Karen

Author's reply

Thranduil chose well for his son when he appointed Beliond to guard over him. But then, he has known Beliond a long time. And I imagine that Oropher held his head and moaned a few times when he was raising good king Thranduil. Legolas is a much more easy going person than his father is, but Thranduil and Oropher were in the same household! Now that must have caused occasional fireworks. I am copying your review and forwarding it to Solith, Eilian, and Celuwen. They all need to straighten up! "Poor Celuwen" is right. And Annael is becoming happier again. I made him so sad in the last story that I just couldn't stand it. He is such a sweetie.

Daw, do you know how much I love this story? Had a really bad night last night -- couldn't sleep. Got up, logged on, and looked for something to read that would soothe my troubled spirit... When I saw your update, I knew that I had found exactly the right story... Read all ten chapters and went back to bed feeling like all was right with the world! Okay, that's a slight exaggeration -- the REAL world does still exist -- but it was definitely a calming and pleasurable interlude. I enjoy your writing. Your characters embody the principles of love, caring, honor, duty, and competence (I'm sure I left some out...), and they live, breathe, and GROW during the course of each story. They are delightful to read about. And this last chapter was also lovely, although I do have one complaint: it's the last one! Somehow, I missed that until I read the other reviews... Hope to see a new story soon! - Barbara

Wow, thank you. I got back from out of town to find this very nice review and now you are making me feel good! I try to respect the values that Tolkien honored when he wrote, but I also try to make my characters a little more flawed than they are by the time we see them in LOTR. They weren't born as the heroes they turned out to be. Their strength is to their own credit and to that of everyone who taught them along the way. I have been thinking of a new story. I'll be away the week after New Year and I'll think some more then. Thank you again for this lovely review.

Poor Eilian. I say that every time, I think, but it is true! He keeps digging himself into holes, the poor boy! It seems Thranduil is communicating better with his children, which is a good thing, especialy now that they all have such heavy responsibilities. Great chapter, Lily

Author's reply

I think that Thranduil has stood by his children many times over the years, so when the chips are down, they do well together. But he still has his moments of being demanding or overprotective or just irritated. And Eilian does indeed dig himself into holes. Good observation. He really needs Celuwen. I think she would steady him down some.

Antigone_Q · 29 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Warriors

Oh, look at me, recklessly reading and reviewing at work! I have short-timer's syndrome I guess: my last day is Wednesday. I liked this chapter so much! Whatever reservations I may have had about Beliond are completely gone now. (Insert regal wave of the hand here) He has my permission to continue to protect Legolas in whatever way he sees fit. Seriously, that conversation between Beliond and Thranduil was priceless. Good for Beliond for not being intimidated by his king and laying down some ground rules. It sounds as if Beliond has known Thranduil a very long time. I also liked that in private, Beliond tells Thranduil all about what a great job Legolas is doing in his patrol, and how he has begun to like him. Very sweet! Speaking of knowing the king a long time, my imagination was caught by this little gem: "He reminds me of you when you were young, although he is somewhat more biddable." It suddenly occurs to me that Thranduil would have to have been as much of a handful as Eilian when he was younger, if not more so. Someday, Daw, I hope you write a Young Thranduil fic. I bet it would be a kick to see him as a young Elf...although if any Elf would be a scary father, Oropher would likely be on the top-ten list. It's nice to see the whole family gathered together for a day or two. I had a ball with the family dynamics. Not to mention there were some lines that just cracked me up. For example, when Legolas talks about meeting Eilian's patrol and fighting Wargs and Orcs: " 'That is good news,' [Ithilden] lied calmly." Also when Thranduil says he hopes that one of the letters contains news about the men cutting down trees - because he is tired of pretending to Ithilden that he doesn't know about it. And Foril's little song at the beginning, which was "very amusing, and Legolas had finally decided that washing dishes with his friends was a small price to pay for the entertainment." Oh, LOL! and it is such a good thing Tinar is a little slow on the uptake sometimes...size of his weapon indeed (snort). Thranduil, I thought, handled Eilian very well. Rather than resorting to all sorts of threats, he gets them both comfortable and tells Eilian that the safety of other Elves, including Celuwen, will depend on him. And Eilian naturally swallows his pride and apologizes. That Solith - the more I see of him the less I like him! I hope things work out for Eilian and Celuwen...they really are awfully good for each other.

Author's reply

I am sorry to say I sometimes read and review at work, but only when it's really necessary! A young Thrandil fic would be fun. Actually, I have just been thinking about my next fic, which would have a tale of a young Ithilden embedded in a story about Legolas. One could do the same thing with Thranduil, really. Beliond could even tell the tale. That would be fun! And I liked seeing Legolas comfortable with his fellow warriors who were now his friends. He is learning to be away from home. The only one I feel bad about here is Eilian. I had this bad news planned for him from the start and felt guilty all along, as he started to feel happier. Oh well, I will reward him one of these days.

Tapetum Lucidum · 29 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Warriors

Fletching arrows is not quite as interesting as going on patrol but it does give the wounded a chance to rest. Your descriptions of Foril's songs had me laughing out loud -especially the undersized weapon! Only the truly egotistical, and clueless, would not make the connection. I agree with Legolas - it is worth doing a month of dishes. The man seemed nervous, that is the understatement of the year. He must have been terrified. Todith shows his leadership skills again by sending the new recruits home for a little break. I am beginning to really like Foril, almost as much as the bees. "Lord Legolas," - has a nice ring to it doesn't it? The scene between Ithilden and his brother was very well done. The younging did a much better job of controlling himself and remembering his place but there was still plenty of sincere affection. Good tone. Legolas is becoming wiser - asking about the forest situation before accidentally mentioning it in front of his Adar. I hope Ithilden doesn't hold him back too much. It is nice to know that Legolas can trust Beliond to watch his back but not go running to his Adar. Beliond is wise to know that revealing too much will encourage Legolas to run off. He was obviously well chosen for this position. Tired of time with your children? Like over the holidays when school is closed for way, way, way too long? I don't know what you are talking about? I am glad their greeting was so light hearted. Eilian procrastinating? Don't you think elves would be major procrastinators? They do have forever to get things done. I don't envy this one having to meet with his father. Thranduil played his trump card - using Celuwen to get Eilian to do what he wants. It is the same thing Eilian did to her when he manuvered her into watching out for his injured youngest. Tricky elves. I dislike Solith, I guess I am supposed to. This is not going to help Eilian's depression at all. Your closing scene was very touching - just like old times. I am glad they are keeping the friendship strong in spite of the new distance between them. That is going to be harder to do as Annael becomes a family man and Legolas focuses on being a warrior. It is hard to maintain that closeness when you have less in common. Very Sweet. Thanks for all of your regular updates and for finishing everything you start! Tapetum

Author's reply

I started this story with Legolas and Annael standing next to one another and I wanted to finish it that way too, but their paths are diverging, as you say. Still, there is nothing like the friend who has known you all you life. My son is an adult and works with someone he went to middle school with. They are just very easy with one another. Legolas is growing up. I think the time away has been good for him. And I liked your point about Elves procrastinating! Of course they would. Why not? Poor Eilian, though. This has to hurt. I'm thinking about the next story now and will see how it goes. Thank you for your regular reviews, TL.

This was a wonderful last chapter although my feeling s are always mixed as you bring another of your great stories to an end. There is satisfaction in the conclusion but sadness that I will miss looking forward to waht will happen next. Poor Eilian to go so far and then be faced with such terrible news I creid for him. Lovely to see Legolas back with Ada and Beliond doing his best to keep some of Legolas's secrets for him thank you so much j

Author's reply

Don't worry, Jebb. I lay awake for a while last night and thought about the next story. :-) I knew that Eilian had this waiting for him even when I was writing about how much better he felt, so I've been feeling bad for him all along. Poor guy.

naneth · 29 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Warriors

It is so nice to read a realistic story-someone would have to make arrows after a battle unless all the elves have "magic" quivers! Those every day touches are what make your stories so special. I'll bet that Tinar doesn't even realize that Foril's song is about him (can't stop humming "You're so vain"!). Hearing "Lord" Legolas announced still gives me a pause...the elfling is all grown up. But not so grown up that he didn't plan his grand announcement of dispatches! Guess Thranduil's ties to Legolas are still strong if he has fretted over Legolas since he was in danger. Some things don't, and shouldn't, change no matter your child's age. Beliond's character becomes a little more fun with each chapter that you write about him. I loved his appraisal of Legolas as a warrior as well as his admission that he has grown fond of his charge. I think he has known Thranduil long enough to carefully walk the line of friend and subject, and he does it well! Poor Eilian. He just can't catch a break with Celuwen and her adar. I loved the end of your story. Legolas and Annael looking back at their dreams and realizing the reality is going to be *somewhat* different than those childhood visions is the perfect ending to your story of warriors. Well done! Now I'll just stroll off whistling the "Andy Griffith" theme-sorry, but the fishing scene started it, and now I can't quit!

I know I slip up sometimes and am less than realistic, but when I find the details, I really enjoy using them. I think that Beliond and Maltanaur are both Thranduil's age or a little older. He trusts them because of his experience with them through the ages. He would never put his sons into the hands of someone less capable than these two. I feel really bad for Eilian. :-( Author Reply: I know I slip up sometimes and am less than realistic, but when I find the details, I really enjoy using them. Arbelethiel · 29 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Warriors

Sorry. With the holidays, I’ve been an even worse reviewer than usual :(, even though I had been reading regularly. Now pell-mell. I loved that Legolas gave another protection rune to Eilian, the glimpse we saw of Nitha, the relationship between Beliond and Legolas, and that between Ithilien and Thranduil... How old is Eilian exactly? Not much more than a century, is he? Probably too young to have been given the responsibility of a captain, however gifted he was. He lacks maturity in some areas (mostly in his dealings with women), even though he is growing up. I checked Ted Nasmith’s spiders, and I agree these are icky. But not as much as PJ’s Shelob! Thank you for these chapters. ~Arbelethiel

Author's reply

I've been reading and reviewing less than normal too. Indeed right now I'm in a hotel room in San Diego. It's a tough life. Eilian is about 110, and I think that he is probably too young for the responsibility he has carried. If he were not the king's son, he would not have been a captain so young, and that's been both a blessing and a curse for him. Ithilden likes relying on him but he can see the damage and is determined to protect Legolas. (So what else is new? :-))

Fadesintothewest · 29 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Warriors

Oh my this was a great chapter. Legolas coming home and Ithilden's reaction, so hard for him to let Legolas go! I nearly split my side reading the part where Thranduil let us in that he knew what went on in the forest- of course he does, he is the King! Oh my, my heart goes out to Eilian, but I still want to beat Sólith, the perverse delight he took in informing Eilian that Celuwen does not want to see him. Oh dearest Eilian, such the male! I must admit I also teared at the end of this chapter, it was sso touching, Annael and Legolas fishing together. You have really built these characters up so well, that them sitting there together, you cannot help but remember the entirety of their history which has been so lovingly told by you b/c of course it's real right?! Thanks for making these characters so life-like and dear to my heart. As always I anxisouly await the next chapter!

Author's reply

It's hard to fool Thranduil! Ithilden does his best and it's a sign of his father's respect for him that Thranduil even pretends that Ithilden gets away with it Poor Eilian. I knew this was coming and I felt rotten about it for the whole story. And of course they are real!

Lyn · 29 December 2003 · Chapter 10: Warriors

I hope this qualifies as a "signed review" because it is important to let you know how truly wonderful your stories are. Many stories are interesting, intriguing, and hold one's attention, wanting more, but your stories are blessed with the wisdom of human nature and a certain nobility which carries them to a higher place than most stories. I just finished a course in children's literature and was not too thrilled with young students exuding praise over some writers I felt were glorifying the wrong values as to what was okay or what expected or even what was to be admired. That is, following these stories I felt would result in adults that could not be trusted. Anyway, I am proud to say I would recommend your stories to anyone, for they are full of wisdom and good thoughts, always rare in any age, and seemingly rarer today.

Author's reply

Lyn- I am extremely gratified by your kind words. I think one of the things about Tolkien is that he shows us people who struggle to live honorable lives and are devoted to those they love. I try to make my characters worthy of him. They are flawed, but their hearts are, I hope, in the right place.

naneth · 27 December 2003 · Chapter 9: The Aftermath of Battle

All my Christmas guests are finally out the door and I found time to sit at the computer for a minute or two. What a delight to find this chapter. It was as though I had received another Christmas present! This chapter was so warm and wonderful. The action was great, but didn't overshadow the interaction between the characters at all. I knew that Beliond had all the symptoms of a protective adar. He has developed into a delightful character. I also enjoyed the interaction between Legolas and Eilian. It is always fun to watch them display their love for each other in such masculine ways. Eilian receiving yet another protective rune was great! I have grown to truly love this story. Another great job, Daw!

Author's reply

Naneth, I am in a hotel room in San Diego. The internet is a wonderful thing. Beliond is probably still going to drive Legolas crazy for a while but he has his good point. I think Thranduil chose well. And Legolas and Eilian have a reasonably uncomplicated relationship, which is not all that common for either one of them. I'm glad you like the story!

Justafan · 26 December 2003 · Chapter 9: The Aftermath of Battle

Ah! This story is so good! Please please please don't stop writing! I've read the entire series and am absolutely in love with it.

Author's reply

Thank you, Justafan. If you have read the entire series, then I am eternally grateful to you. I am working on the last chapter of this story, but probably won't post until New Year's Eve because I'll be out of town until then. I got a laptop for Christmas :-) but don't think I'll have an internet connection where I'll be. Stories of Arda is a great place to read stories, isn't it?

FirstMate · 26 December 2003 · Chapter 9: The Aftermath of Battle

It's so wonderful to see an update on such a great story! My favorite parts are these: 1) Legolas giving Eilian another rune (doesn't he have four now? I hope they don't all clank together and give away his position when he's trying to be quiet! Ha!), 2) Legolas feeling jealous of Galelas only to remember that he was Eilian's brother after all, 3) and the two 'protectors' talking together. Those were all very warm, lovely scenes. Very nice chapter!

Author's reply

I am assuming that Eilian wears only the rune that his father gave him. He'll have to have a stable sale to get rid of the rest. And if Legolas was jealous of Galelas, I imagine that Galelas had his moments too. From his point of view, Eilian, whom he admires, fussed over Legolas from the moment Legolas entered the scene. Eilian makes sure that Legolas will sleep next to him and then Galelas sees Legolas give Eilian a package and Eilian kiss Legolas on the forehead. That's when he approaches the two brothers. He should have such a good relationship with that jerk, Tinar! I think Maltanaur is the only person who truly understands Beliond right now. They share experiences.

Dot · 26 December 2003 · Chapter 9: The Aftermath of Battle

Oh wow, what an incredible chapter. Completely engaging. As always, I love the way you make sure we know exactly where everyone is and what they are doing during a battle. I really liked the beginning, when you allow us to see how Eilian’s mind works as a captain as he considers the situation and tries to assess his warriors. I had to laugh at Eilian watching Maltanaur watching Eilian!! Those two really seem to have established a much easier relationship – and it’s good to know that Eilian obviously trusts him and respects his opinion. The battle itself was written so vividly. I love the idea of them all trying to watch each others’ backs and of Eilian trying to suppress his natural instinct to just protect Legolas from any danger. My favourite image has to be of Legolas pulling the arrow that Eilian had just shot from the Orc’s head and using it to kill the warg that was about to attack Beliond. Amazing! Oh, and a big ‘woo-hoo’ for Galelas showing up his brother! *grins* Legolas isn’t exactly short of people to look after him, is he?! Galorian wasn’t the only one amused at Eilian’s over-anxiety! I have to say, though, my heart dropped when he said “Stop fussing, Eilian. Nana can do it”…. You’re so clever! For a second there I really did think the same as Eilian and then got totally embarrassed when I realised what he meant! Lalorn?? Now, don’t you know it’s mean to make people cry at Christmas time?! I did suspect Beliond had a story like that but still, I feel so sorry for him. It’s quite difficult to comprehend the fact that elves carry their grief for so long – I don’t think any other race could survive that. I’m so glad he seems to have a friend in Maltanaur. He appears to understand him, even more so now that they have the protection of Thranduil’s sons in common. I have to say, it seems a big risk that Thranduil took with Beliond. I can see that it is good for him to have someone to love and protect again and maybe even bring him out of himself a bit more but if anything happened to Legolas I don’t imagine Beliond would be able to cope any more than Legolas’ father and brothers. Especially as it looks like Beliond’s attempts not to let himself get too attached to Legolas don’t seem to have worked!! Great chapter – bring on the next one!:)

Author's reply

I have gradually come to appreciate the Maltanaur-Eilian relationship. Eilian is good at what he does, but he needs Maltanaur to help keep him in balance (not to mention alive). The image of Legolas salvaging an arrow and using it to kill the Warg was one of those things that grew out of trying to solve a plot puzzle. I wanted Legolas to save Beliond, but Beliond would only need saving if they were on the ground, and they would only be on the ground if they were out of arrows. So where was Legolas going to get an arrow? Voila! Salvage one and why not salvage Eilian's? The nana thing was a little touchy to do because Legolas has lost his mother, but still, I thought it was amusing. And poor Beliond. I had a backstory for him about the son and so on, so I knew this was in his background from the start but I still felt bad. I have not written any of the next chapter yet because we had company and we are leaving tomorrow and won't be back until New Year's Eve, so it may be a while until the next one is done. But I have an outline! Maybe I'll get to zone out for the rest of today and bang it out.

A lovely Christmas present to find when I escaped from all the festivities for a little quality time before madness descneds with dinner Thank goodness Eilian arrived in time and was able to give support which even Legolas acknowledged eventually was welcome I liked the explanation about Beliond and his son no wonder he worries about Legolas and the interaction between Beliond and Malanaur the first fivfty years are the worst indeed And I don't think it is onlt Legolas who will have to beware Adar when he returns home thank you for taking the time to post Happy Christmas Judy

Author's reply

I just finished cleanup after dinner and am catching up a little. Legolas has been warmed by Eilian's love for so long that he doesn't even know he needs it. It's always been there. Beliond has had a tragic life. I think Thranduil is hoping this assignment will help him as well as Legolas. Both Legolas and Eilian are heading home in the next chapter. I hope Adar is ready for it!

meckinock · 25 December 2003 · Chapter 9: The Aftermath of Battle

Fantastic! Great move by Legolas to take out the Warg that was sneaking up (!) on Beliond, especially since he was a bit stunned at that moment by Eilian's sudden appearance. Maybe he'll get a few less lectures in the upcoming days. I loved Galorion's laughing dismissal of Eilain's frantic concern. I suppose Eilian will always try to protect his baby brother, but I think both he and Legolas are starting to look at each other in a different light - fellow warriors, not just brothers. Legolas's momentary jealousy of Eilian's relationship with Galelas was understandable, but it was good that he was able to talk himself out of it. Beliond was perfect tending injured Legolas; calming him down and distracting him while he worked. I think it calmed Eilian down, too! The chat between Beliond and Maltanaur was wonderful. What an odd and unique career path they share. It was good that Maltanaur was able to reassure Beliond that the assignment does have its rewards; though it looks like the old guy is getting pretty attached to his young charge anyway.

Author's reply

I think Beliond will be a little reassured by Legolas's performance. And I've been thinking about Legolas's relationship to Eilian and how it would change. It seems to me he might be likely to give up his hero worship of Eilian before Eilian is willing to give up his need to protect Legolas. And that makes me a little sad. I thought that Maltanaur was probably the only person who would really understand Beliond. They share a history and a job.

Brenda G. · 25 December 2003 · Chapter 9: The Aftermath of Battle

WONDERFUL!!! Loved this chapter so much! As usual, Eilian makes a timely appearance; and, as usual, he is overprotective of the brat. But it seems that Legolas did not actually mind the added support from his brother this time. Legolas did very well in battle, despite getting wounded in the process. He is well on his way to becoming the warrior he has always wanted to be. Like Eilian, I am so proud of him! It is gratifying to see the growing attachment between Legolas and Beliond. Finally we find out about the mystery behind the Elf and Beliond's past loss. So his son was the one. How very sad for Beliond, but hearing from his own lips that he is becoming fond of Legolas was very touching and has deeply endeared Legolas' keeper to me. Wonder how Thranduil will take the news of his youngest being wounded in battle? Not too well at first, I should think, but after reflection, he will most likely feel the same pride in the princeling that Eilian and Beliond do. I was so pleased to see Galelas "show his qualities" in battle, and doubly pleased to see some of the wind taken out of the much puffed up Tinar for his obvious negligence. You would think he would at least show some appreciation to his younger brother for saving his life! Oh, well, pride goeth before a fall... Legolas giving Eilian a rune of protection was a totally precious moment. I loved Eilian's response, and I wonder if he will wear all three of the runes now in his possession? Knowing the wild thing Eilian can be, he probably needs to wear them all! Daw, your writing just doesn't get any better than this. Terrific chapter. I'm all smiles. Merry Christmas, Professor! BG

Author's reply

Legolas DID do well. :-) The next time, he will have more confidence in himself and will have a more realistic sense of what to expect. In a few hundred years, he's be able to bring down an oliphaunt! I think Legolas is going home in the next chapter too, so we'll get a chance to see the king with his wounded chick. And I took great delight in giving Tinar his comeuppance. Go Galelas!

The Karenator · 24 December 2003 · Chapter 9: The Aftermath of Battle

What a wonderful Christmas Eve surprise to find another chapter posted. Eilian is, indeed, a good tracker and he found his worst fear...Legolas in the midst of battle. I was glad to see Legolas redeem himself by killing the warg that was creeping up on Beliond. It seems that even very experienced warriors can lose track of their prey in the confusion of battle. And Tinar, the rascal, was saved from 'his own folly' by the little brother he has always dismissed as being inferior. Boy, it must have stung his pride, not only to be dressed down by his captain for his reckless behavior, but for his brother to witness it. While it may have grieved him, I think it was good for Galelas to see it. It may give him a whole new perspective on this 'perfect' brother and help him to stop competing with the 'fairey tale' hero he has been bludgeoned with all his life. While Eilian's fussing over Legolas, Legolas's injury certainly opened a wound for Beliond. His attachment to Legolas and his feelings of protectiveness have taken on a whole new dimension. The grieving adar surfaced in a way that surprised even him. Was he responsible for his own son in battle? That doesn't seem like the best way to go into battle, but, then, in times of war, the organizational plans may be a bit loose and relatives end up fighting at each other's backs. I can't imagine how frightening such an arrangement would be for a parent. Obviously, it turned out to be a tragic one for Beliond and Lalorn. I very much liked the idea that Beliond talked non-stop to Legolas as he stitched the wound. I would think that the first wound taken in battle would cause a bit of shock for the young warrior and trying to return things to as normal as possible as quickly as possible...and to divert the youngling's attention is an old campaign trick. I'm not surprised that Legolas was a little jealous of Eilian's growing relationship with Galelas, but I'm glad he was able to step back and count his blessings that Eilian was his brother and not Tinar. And Eilian has a new rune! Will he just let everyone think he's wearing the one they gave him? I had to laugh when Eilian thought Legolas had taken a blow to the head. And I laughed again when Beliond assured Thranduil's sons that the king had a rich vocabulary. I particularly liked the scene between Maltanaur and Beliond. It had the wonderful slow feeling of two old friends reuniting after an intense experience and the remembrances of a sad event that happened long ago. My favorite line was when Maltanaur said to Beliond, “The first fifty years are the hardest,” he confided and then laughed at Beliond’s look of dismay. These two share a difficult and often thankless job. But they also share a continuously growing affection for the two they have been assigned to protect. They are unique by assignment and in their own right. I don't know if there could be any higher honor bestowed on them than for the king to entrust his sons into their care. I think Beliond needed the comfort of his old friend's presence and the reassurance of his words. Beliond's struggling, too. Outstanding chapter, Daw, but I'm feeling kind of depressed for Beliond. I'll hope for brighter days for the old guy. Karen

Last Christmas Eve, I found the final chapter of Jocelyn's "Little Nudge Out the Door" posted and I was so thrilled. I hadn't written anything then and was so sorry her story was ending that I was driven to it. I picture Beliond being close enough to his son during the battle that he saw him be injured but couldn't stop it and couldn't get close enough to care for him at all afterwards. I cannot imagine how awful that would be either. And I did intend him to be talking in order to distract Legolas. I used to do that when my son was little and needed a blood test. Beliond is struggling but I think that having to care for Legolas and be around other people again is probably good for him. Thranduil is so trick! It amused me to think that both Eilian and Legolas could be shocked to hear that Adar could swear if he wanted to.

Good chapter, and quick too. I'm glad I don't have to worry about these guys over Christmas, because I would. Loved the scene between the keepers, Beliond is not as gruff as he appears. And Eilian now has a fourth rune, I think he's going to need all that protection when he finally makes his way home.

I'm planning to send Eilian home in the next chapter and I fear he is in trouble. But it made me happy to let him know that his family and Maltanaur love him enough to see to it that he has a rune (or four). And Maltanaur was the only one around who was Beliond's age and an old friend. The next chapter will be slower in coming because I have company today and then we're traveling for a while. I have notes for it though!

That was a fast update! Thank you for resolving the cliffie so quickly - I can relax now. Thank heavens Eilian and his patrol arrived when they did, I think things would have been a lot worse if they hadn't. So we are finding out a little more about Beliond - I guessed that Lalorn was his son just before Maltanaur said. And it's interesting to see that Legolas decides it is rather nice to have Eilian fussing over him sometimes. Jay

I had part of this chapter written because I originally thought it and the last chapter would all be one piece, but it just got too long. I guess when you've been wounded for the first time, a fussy brother doesn't seem so bad!

Eilian has way too much fun tracking orcs. It seems to be his favorite pastime. He was truly meant to be a warrior, wasn't he? The bonding continues with Galelas. I think a blond elf might be a little jealous. Talk about timing - they showed up at the right time and place didn't they? Eilian looks out for Legolas and Legolas protects... Beliond? He was watching his back. Galelas protects Tinar too?! I wish I had been there, safely up in a tree, but I be the look on Tinar's face was priceless. Ow, sliced in the arm. I believe he wouldn't have noticed it with his adrenaline flowing like it was. Poor protective Eilian must have been having a heart attack. Between Eilian and Beliond, Legolas couldn't be in safer hands. I think Galorion even felt a little sorry for his newest comerade. When Legolas referred to his keeper as Nana and Eilian thought he had a head wound I was laughing out loud. That was hilarious! Eilian is so stressed out he can't recognize sarcasm. "Thranduil already knows that word" was one of my favorite lines as well. What a super scene! I was wondering if Lalorn was a typo or if Beliond was having a flashback. I thought we might find out a little history about a previous charge. Ouch! A dressing down in front of everyone else, that has to smart. Add that to being upstaged by your younger brother and out shot by the new recruit. Tinar's pride has been more than a little hurt. Another rune of protection? I saw that one coming. I am glad Legolas recogized he is much better off with Eilian as a brother than Tinar. I hope he appreciates his concern and respect a little bit more. Very touching scene between the keepers. They both have very difficult jobs. Legolas may not be as impulsive as Eilian but he is certainly more accident prone. Of course, that's what makes fan fiction so fun. Great job and Merry Christmas! You were really good at anticipating Legolas's jealousy! Even I wasn't sure that would make it into the story until there was a good place for it. Galorion felt sorry for Legolas, but he also was hoping he wasn't going to have to tell the king that he let his baby get broken too badly. I've been working up to this scene with Beliond for a while now and was pleased by the way it came off. And I liked the surprise of the brothers that their father could swear when he wanted to. I needed to kick Tinar around a little. He was annoying me. And I also liked taking on Maltanaur's point of view. He's been in my stories since the very first one and it's the first time I've ever done that. Merry Christmas, Tapetum. Thank you for all your wonderful reviews this year.

This time it's not my fault - you posted more quickly than ususal! What did Eilian say that was so bad? I don't remember anything said about the settlement that should upset Solith. I would think he was much more irate about putting Celuwen in the position he had, protecting Legolas over her home, rather than anything he said about the colony. Maybe Solith's pride is wounded and he wants to make Eilian crawl a little. I like the growing comeraderie between Galelas and Eilian. Eilian clearly sees him as a younger brother he can look out for. Galelas is lucky to have a mentor in Eilian. He is obviously much more caring than Tinar. Maltanaur must have found Eilian's comments about young warriors hilarious. Like he had never noticed. I am glad big brother's spirits are beginning to lift. Beliond is trying to share his wisdom with his young charge, unfortunately, the princeling doesn't want it. It does show that he cares for the young one. At work we never wish for something 'interesting' to happen. It always does and then you regret it. Kind of like finding a bunch of orcs in your forest. Galorion is very good at planning a strategy. It is unwise to follow them into the unknown. Uh Oh, an orc horn? I guess they have them since Legolas knew what they didn't sound like at Helm's Deep - good tie in. Who was looking for more adventure? That will teach him. Tinar out of arrows first again? Seems to be a habit. I am glad Legolas checked with Beliond before leaping to the ground. Good job. Wait, what's this... A Cliffhanger?! You are not allowed to leave cliffies! That is for all those other, mean authors! Well at least you posted again quickly. By the way - I liked "wroth." That's why I pointed it out and shared it with my husband. He had never heard it before either.

I think you have Solith nailed, TL. Throw in his conviction that Eilian will hurt his daughter and you have a nasty mix. I think Eilian's customary generosity of spirit shows in his care for Galelas. And as I recall, it's supposedly a Chinese curse to wish that someone will live in interesting times. Your poor husband. He actually has to listen to stuff about my stories by proxy. My husband won't read them.

You can’t leave it there!! Anyway, sorry but this will have to be a quick one – it’s 9:40pm on Christmas Eve and I’m supposed to be heading out to Mass soon…but I didn’t want to leave this til after Christmas. I promise I'll read the next chapter as soon as possible!! Thranduil seems to be making headway with the settlers. He’s obviously well used to having to negotiate with stubborn elves! He showed remarkable restraint with Solith, although I suspect that’s partly because he blames Eilian more than Solith for the current situation… Eilian is happy! *hopes Thranduil won’t go and upset him* See, all he needs is a little freedom, some control and a bit of praise. O.k, so he thrives on the danger but this doesn’t seem as dangerous as some of his escapades. Hmmn. I’ll have to wait and see what you have up your sleeve, though! Galelas is coming on a lot, isn’t he? I really like the way you’ve kept it realistic, though and that he’s still struggling to make the effort. Ooh, and I love Maltanaur! I know I keep saying it, but he really does make me smile – he’s so good for Eilian! Poor Legolas is never going to live down the incident with the spiders. I’m still dying to know what led Beliond to be so worried about arrogance in battle… I have to laugh, though, at Legolas thinking he’s a seasoned warrior now – I’m sure that would amuse the other members of his patrol! Gotta run, I’m afraid. Have a great Christmas, and I hope Santa is good to you!:)

Thranduil and Eilian will have a little conversation about the settlement elves eventually but I have to get the border patrols out of danger first! I was so relieved to be able to write about happy Eilian again. Depressed Eilian is just unnatural. And when you tell me that I have made Galelas's improvement realistic, I am immensely flattered. I hope your Christmas has been good. It's mid-afternoon on Christmas Eve here and my son has just come home, so things are good.

Well, I was certainly glad to see that you didn't leave us off for a long while;-) I was glad to see Eilian 'rescue' Legolas and in turn Legolas save Eilian. I see that some of Beliond's past is coming back, unfortunatly for him right? And I laughed when Legolas gave Eilian another rune. How many does he have now? At least four, lol. I also laughed at Legolas' cheeky remark about 'Nana' though poor Eilian was a little lost. lol. I also enjoyed the two guardians sitting down and discussing their charges. Oh! And Legolas spitting out the curse word lol! I loved that part. Merry Christmas! Namaarie~ LOTRFaith

I had fun working some humor into this chapter, with the runes, and Nana, and the cursing. Beliond and Maltanaur would understand one another's problems in way that no one else would, so I thought they needed to talk. Merry Christmas, Faith.
