· Chapter 3: Eomer's Revenge
wow- that was brilliant. my dog got two skunks once then another one later one, EVERYONE knew there were skunks (there were even babies living under the house) needless to say the house smelled for MONTHS. and the smell would not come off my dog (we bathed her with dog shampoo, and two cans of tomato juice twice- it turned her pink it was really funny- but she still smelled)
it was a bad experience but one that we now look back upon, grateful for it to be over
(another positive note for my skunk story- we found another dog because of it!)
great writing- love the eomer/eowyn relationship!

Oh, this was a scream! I like stories that explain some of the discrepancies between the books and the movie and this was a very. . . unusual. . . take on one. A skunk in Edoras! I loved that last line, "The King was still under the influence of the Snake, the palace still smelled, his hair was cropped short and a lot of the winter’s hay had been ruined, but things were looking up." LOL It always helps to get a new perspective on things. ;)

I just had to do it! I couldn't help myself! :) I'm one of those authors who likes to torture their characters, only I do it in cruel and unusual ways. :D
And I can picture Eowyn with a kife just hacking away at his hair. Needless to say, he doesn't look too happy about it, either. :)

xDDD Very good! I was wondering about Eomer's hair-issue myself. ^bows^ Nicely done! I once had a skunk living nearby my house, and believe me, not a pleasurable experience. xP

Author's reply
I suppose cutting off a Man's hair is like shaving a dwarf. They really don't want you to do it and they will put up quite a fight, but sometimes something perfectly disgusting just has to be done away with. :)
Condolences on the awful experience. That is something I would wish on no one.

x3 Buahahaha! Poetic justice. Poor old Grima. d: Now I suppose he'd have to share a stall with Eomer.
Again, great chapter, I shall finish the next one now. ^^
Author's reply
I don't believe Eomer would let him in the same stall with him. After all, *Grima* stinks! Eomer doesn't want to have anything to do with him, albeit they both smell exactly the same. :)
Thanks again for the reviews.

^^ I'm returning all those nice reviews you've left for me! You had me rolling from this story, and I have only read the first chapter so far. When I have time, I will be sure to read the rest! Poor Eomer (my computer won't allow me to do special characters)! I wonder if something like this ever did happen in those times? Oo;; The Rohirrim must encounter skunks now and again. ^^
Author's reply
You know, this story had a lot of thought connected with it. Who would be the one to "get it"? At first, it was Mirkwood story and Thranduil was to be the lucky one. But, as I've said before, I'm no good with Elves; Coriel, who is good with Elves, didn't want to help me.
Then I decided on Rohan. Would it be Grima? Eowyn? Eomer? Theoden? Elfwine? Finally I decided against Eowyn and pulled Eomer into one of the biggest messes of his life. (Would it be correct Rohirric grammar to say the biggest 'pickle' of his life?) :)
Thanks for the review.

Now I'm worried! What if Mister Skunk was Misses Skunk and there are little stinkers about? Guess I will just have to wait and see what is going on like everyone else won't I?
Author's reply
I hope, for Eomer's sake, that there aren't anymore little skunks running around. For gosh sakes, one is too much; we don't need a dozen more!
And sorry about that, but I forgot to click the 'complete' button. I may add more to this story at a later date, but for now it's finished.
Thanks for the reviews!

Grima gets what he deserves! Score one for the skunk! I wondered about the morning sightings but if I know you, you have an idea in the works here. I am content to wait and see what is wrong with mister or misses skunk.
Author's reply
I have left the skunk's health problems up to the reader's imagination, really. I have no clue why he was coming out in the morning! Maybe he was thirsty and needed just one more glass of water before going to bed! Quien sabe?
I'm glad you're enjoying Eomer's little domestic difficulty! :)

I enjoy the thought of all of the soldiers going door-to-door for tomatoes! This is very funny! You can never find good tomatoes when you need them!
Author's reply
This story just wrote itself. :) I had no clue how he was going to get tomatoes! And so I just had his men wander around. But of course they couldn't find any, or the story would have been ruined! :) I had to ask my mom what color a tomato turns when it gets old and she offered to let me keep one in my room until I found out, but I politely declined her generous offer. :) I decided a grey tomato would be better than a black one. You know, not as absolutely disgusting. I wonder how the tomato smelled. Any better than Eomer? :)

Good thing Eomer got the skunk. I could almost smell that polecat; I've smelled enough around where I live. It is NOT a very pleasant smell, and I really can't blame Theoden moving to another part of the palace!
Author's reply
I understand perfectly. We lived right on the highway in Texas and skunks where getting creamed on the road all the time! Besides that we had some factory down the road that, when the wind was just right, would blow stink right at us. Still, I can't help but miss that great state! :)
I can commiserate with Theoden, the poor guy. I know I wanted to move when the durn thing invaded MY room. :)
Thanks for the review.

That poor skunk! Well, I suppose he had it coming to him. But, Eomer's hair is short? It would take me at least a year to grow mine as long as his was in the movie. :)
Author's reply
Eomer was supposed to have a long braid, but in the movie, he had shoulder length hair that he just let fly all over the place half the time. Nothing aggravates me more than somebody with long hair in his face. PULL IT BACK!
OK, sorry about that. But, yeah, the skunk is dead and all may relax now.:) (Except Grima. He's not allowed to relax.)

· Chapter 3: Eomer's Revenge
Oh dear...Eomer has killed the poor skunk. If it were a typical, fairly innocent skunk I might have to leave a rank, but since this is a very disgusting and rather violent skunk, I suppose I can't get upset. *g*
Hmm...so that's why his hair is shorter in the movie! Makes sense.
It dawned on me that he could have used vinegar to get of the smell. Oh well...I think the story is better without it. *g*
Lovely last chapter, Chigger.

Author's reply
Do they have vinegar in Rohan?
I don't think that I could ever feel sorry for a skunk. Except maybe that poor skunk in Bambi that was ambushed by the dreaded Mary Sue! :)
Thanks for the review!

Hi Chigger, super last chapter, So that is why Eomer's hair is not as long as the other Rohirrim!! Now I know!!
Author's reply
Coriel and I noticed that, and so I decided to put it in my story. Hey, if something stinks, cut it off. :)
Thanks for all the feedback.

Hmmmm. Could that be the reason Grima had Eomer banished/jailed? Eh, he got what he deserved. Nicely done. :)
Author's reply
I hadn't thought of that, but it's probable. ;) Sometimes even the most composed people snap and just have to hurt *somebody*! Grima just happened to push all the wrong buttons. Glad you liked it. (Sorry for smelling up your namesake!)

Wooo---I think Grima really deserved that one. There are occasional moments when I feel a tad sorry for that evil guy, but I doubt I will be having any of those while reading this story. *g*
And our skunk pal has invaded the king's room too, huh? I found it rather amusing that the stench had the ability to actually capture Theoden's attention.
I really enjoyed Eomer's musings after he woke up---it's hard to find good serious Rohan bits, and even harder to find ones that aren't completely pathetic. Lovely job!
"He was not completely without friends, he corrected himself. He still had his horse." Loved that!!
This is a great story---thank you for sharing it!

Author's reply
Sometimes I feel sorry for a certain bad guy, I mean, some aren't bad, they're just misguided, but Grima, especially after seeing the movie, is just one big slimeball, and I can't stand the guy!
Coriel and I lived in the master bedroom there for awhile before we moved (long story) and the a/c unit was right outside our window. This lovely little skunk moved in and WHEW what a stench! We could hear him scratching and smell him living down there and it was just . . . gross! (He was later shot by our wonderful brother.) Therefore, I know that Theoden would have to notice *that* for gosh sakes. How can you help it?
I was hoping that the little serious moment in there wouldn't ruin the story. I had no intention of putting it in there, it just flowed and I hadn't the heart the take it out, so I'm glad you liked it.
A good horse is a wonderful companion, as is a good dog. We've had horses and they are really nice. You have to be careful when you rub *their* tummy though. Their feet aren't as soft as a dog's. :)

LOL! A skunk getting Eomer!
This is a treat, since there are so few humerous, but still fairly canonical, stories taking place in Rohan. I find the place and its people rather captivating, since they are one group in Tolkien's ME that seem very real but still very far away.
The bit inside the Golden Hall was hilarious (and I thought the characters were very well written), as well as the tomato hunt (that one shriveled tomato---poor Eomer! What time of year is it?).
I'm going to check out the other chapter now...

Author's reply
The idea was too tempting and I just had to write this story. Coriel refuses to have anything to do with it. She usually reads over my stuff and gives me pointers, but she wanted no part of this one, so it's all my own for once. :)
I agree about Rohan. So few people know anything about it, and so they just write it off as unintersting. I love Rohan and her people and I like Eomer even more than I like Legolas, really. I love horses and I find Men easier to work with, therefore, Rohan is perfect, if they would just learn how to write.
This takes place *right* before LOTR, but I don't know what time of year it is, really. I just didn't think that tomatoes were really native to Rohan, it would work better if he didn't get any and importing them from the Shire isn't conducive to ripe products. :)

Hi Chigger, super second chapter, and I am glad Grima got his comeuppance. I did not know skunks were nocturnal, so thanks for the tip.
p.s.I am from the uk we do not have skunks here.
Author's reply
I'm from Texas, and we DO have skunks there. My older brother even had to shoot one that was wandering around our property once. It came around while we were eating lunch and I haven't been able to eat that particular kind of pasta again. That thing was UGLY!!! And SMELLY!!! Yuck!
I can't stand Grima.

How deliriously funny! And original, too, by my reckoning. Think we should tell Eomer that tomatoes are not native to Middle Earth? You know, just to brighen his day a little more?
Author's reply
As the people making the movie put it, we're dealing with Balrogs, Cave Trolls, Orcs, Dark Lords, who's going to care about a little tomato? And I'm sure that's just what he's dying to hear! Glad you liked it. :)
