| Alas for all that Master Ferrier has endured. No wonder he is full of anger--anger is often easier to bear than such losses as he's known. Now, here is hope that Estel does not be too careless or the changes in ground too sudden. And thanks so for all your words of encouragement! He really needs more care than he's willing to allow Elrond to give him -- and it's a bit of a no-win situation from Elrond's POV: risk setting him back by forcing him to stay, or send a sick man off on his own.... | What a great set up. The hide and seek is a plausible training exercise, but in our world, we probably wouldn't do it with a child of 12. So that shows something about their culture and need too. And I can see all kinds of potential dangers, not just the weather. I also liked Estel's concern for Elrond and Elrond's reaction to it. He wanted Estel hidden but he understood the impulse to protect. The characterizations feel quite real. I liked the way Estel teeters between childhood and young manhood, responsibly bidding his mother farewell one minute and skipping with enthusiasm the next. PS. Is it possible you share my love for Cinda Chima's Seven Realms books? Author Reply: Twelve is such a difficult age, right? Half child, half teenager -- there are no categories they safely fit into, and half the time no one (including themselves) actually know what's going on. :-P Also, I imagine that rearing a compassionate child in secret, keeping him safe without making him overly fearful, would be a delicate balance... Thanks for the review! And, I haven't actually read the Seven Realms books, but I'll have to check them out! I'm always looking for fun new books! :-) | |
